Hi Bold Bakers! Make Sourdough without any fuss: bit.ly/SourdoughBreadRecipe
Is the starter supposed to smell?
Hi. It has a sour smell, but that is normal because it's fermented.
Wow your baby is so cute
Thanks so much Gemma. I've been looking for a sourdough recipe that doesn't require so much needing. Cant wait to try it🥰
To make your own bread flour, start by measuring out all-purpose flour according to your recipe. Next, add 1 teaspoon of vital wheat gluten for every 1 cup of flour to give the bread a firmer texture. For example, if your recipe calls for 2½ cups of flour, you would use 2½ teaspoons of vital wheat gluten. During this lockdown its hard to find any flour or wheat gluten lol ;;;) God Bless Us All in these times!!!!!
I have been watching baking videos for years but yours is one of my favorite. You explain it so straightforward, no fuss, nothing fancy, just right. Making it easy to follow and recreate. It reminds me of my mom when she first taught me how to bake. Thank you. Keep it coming.
I do the total mix, Flour, salt mix well then add to water, starter mix. mix well and no autolyse, just 2 stretch and fold then bulk fermentation. 10 hours later fold shape then 3 hours later bake...single day baking - simple and easy. Thumbs up!
Thanks for sharing, Jeyanthu.
To all of our Canadians friends, flour in canada usually contain a higher amount of gluten due to the variety of wheat thats grown here. I’ve got great results using regular all purpose flour for bread here. Best of luck with your bread!
I am from India. It's quite hot in here 38 degree celcius. Can I keep my dough for proofing at room temperature only?
One more - can I prepare my starter at this temperature or should I keep it in the refrigerator?
Thank you for sharing this Shelly and for being here. If you're going to give this a go, here's the complete recipe ttps://bit.ly/SourdoughBreadRecipe
@@biggerbolderbaking please answer my question too...
@@TheFearlessCooking You can try creating a starter at 38C, and see if it will stay alive. Look for the bubbling and keep track of its smell for signs that it's alive. I would think that a higher temperature means less proofing time for your dough. When proofing at your room temperature I think it would take less time. Experiment with sourdough! you wont know what works until you've tried it
thanks for sharing was not aware our Canadian flour was different. I have had great success baking bread with AP flour.
My husband's grandmother did all her baking with her hands and she taught me what it should feel like. Love your recipes and your sweet new baby boy!
I have to say, baby george is the HIGHLIGHT of your new videos!! He’s so cute I can’t!!
Thank you for the kind words.
Thanks for the great tips and recipe 👍
The sourdough looks perfect and yummy 😋

I just subscribed
George looks like her mamma and he looks soooo cute when he is sleeping. And also Gemma your cooking is really good and helps us very much in this quarantine. Iam really fortunate that I found your channel.
Thank you for your kind words. Stay safe!
I made this dough last night and baked it today. The flavor was really good. In fact, out of the half dozen no-knead sourdough bread recipes I've tried, your recipe produced the best flavor result. I think the addition of olive oil gave it a good flavor and a more delicate crumb without sacrificing the crusty crust! I used the Americas Test Kitchen method of proofing the dough on parchment in a dutch oven, covered with cling wrap, and placed in a cold oven (oven was kept off) over a pan of steaming water during the proofing period. When finished proofing, removed the cling wrap, scored the dough, put the lid on the dutch oven and put it back into the cold oven, turned the oven on and let both the bread/dutch oven and the oven rise up to 425 degrees at the same time. Worked like a charm, and no need to use a banneton or cloth covered bowl for proofing and no need to preheat the dutch oven or the oven.Thank you for this delicious recipe. I will make it again!
That’s fantastic! Thank you for giving my recipe a go. Well done to you!
I just made my own starter using your recipe! I’ve seen a lot of video explaining about sourdough but I never understand the process but you explain it clearly and easy to understand. I never had sourdough before in my life, I hope it’ll taste amazing🤩 Thanks a lot Gemma😇
I'm delighted to hear that Is'ad. Go ahead and give this a go. Here's the complete recipe bit.ly/SourdoughBreadRecipe
Thanks Gemma and Kevin. Blessings to you and your little one😊
You are welcome. Thank you for the well wishes.
Thank you for explaining it thoroughly.....❤️
Wow! This is really gorgeous bread! Thank you so much for walking us through the whole process. It was great to see every step. I've always been a bit intimidated by sourdough, but now I want to try it.

Can’t wait to try this, thank you for the video. Welcome back.
Hi Gemma made this loaf last week it turned out great going to make another one tomorrow.
Thanks for sharing this recipe and all your great tips .... Steve
You are the best chef you have to be in a TV show😘😍
Thank you for your kind words.
Totally agreed !!!
Thank you for explaining the scoring! I've been sitting here wondering about that while watching artisian/sourdough recipe videos.
I tried it and it is very very yummy! Thank you!!
After months of watching videos on sourdough bread making and many failed attempts, your technique was the one that helped me to finally break the mold. My bread today came out awesome. Got a nice ear, even and tender crumb and delicious subtly sour taste. Thank you so much!!!
That's fantastic, Enrico! Well done to you!
If not for you, I would have never discovered the joy of baking my own sourdough bread. Honestly did not even like sourdough that much, but your video made me want to try. Five months later and sourdough bread is the only bread for me! Thank you so much for your inspiration and your wonderful videos. Congratulations on your new home!
Thrilled to hear that, Suz! Thank you so much for your support and this glowing review! Keep it up, happy baking !
WOW! Thank you SO MUCH for this recipe. I am relatively new to making sourdough bread and I am so excited about the loaf I baked today following your suggestion to bake it under a metal bowl. I haven't been quite satisfied with the ones I've baked in a loaf pan, but I don't have a dutch oven and really didn't want to buy one. Today's loaf - my fourth one since I started my sourdough journey 2 months ago, turned out AMAZING!!! Thank you so much - I have enjoyed many of your recipes - they are always amazing! God Bless.
Third time is the charm! My first two attempts totally failed. I just couldn't get surface tension for the proof and ended up with loose blobs. The third time, I refrigerated the dough before shaping it and got a great result. The final product looked and tasted amazing! Thank you for the recipe and great instructions
Well done to you! Thank you for sharing.
This was exactly what I was looking for! Thanks so much!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for being here, Cynthia.
Love, love, love this. I have taken inspiration from this lovely baker as well as some other people I have been following on UA-cam. I decided to post up my attempt in real time, wish me luck!
How did it go, Tom?
Hey Chunky Bird, it went really well thanks. Been making loaves successfully every week since. I need to upload my results.

Go for it, Jolene www.biggerbolderbaking.com/sourdough-bread-for-beginners/
Hello Gemma, Congratulations to you. Baby George is so adorable. Thank you for the sourdough starter recipe and this sourdough bread recipe. I love making bread and I never buy bread from stores or bakery. In my country people dont bake so much, and bread baking is out of the question. We have so many bakeries here that its much more convenient to buy bread. Yet I love to bake my own bread. I have tried many of your other recipes too during the past. As you had mentioned, Yeast is not available here nowadays. So I am definitely going to try the sourdough starter tomorrow. I was always hesitant to try it out. But you make it seem easy and your videos are so informative and clear. Thank you so much. Have a good day.
Thank you for the kind words Roxana. The demand for baking ingredients is quite high because most people are staying home. I'm happy to know that you have made your own sourdough starter. Bread making is an important life skill, especially when people have limited mobility these days.
I love this recipe!! Its so easy!! And the starter is so easy too!! Love love this!!!
Delighted to hear that, Janet. Thank you for being here.
Perfect timing for the video. My sourdough starter just matured. I am gonna make this asap
Great minds think alike! Can't wait to see what you bake!
Thank you so much for this lovely recipe and video. I started to make sourdough again as it's spring season here in New Zealand. Sourdough came out super soft and fluffy and chewy in the middle. The amount of salt was perfect!
And I did my starter watching your video too. Its now 9mths old starter. Very proud to kept it alive this long
That’s fantastic, Terri! Well done, you!
I’ve been trying a lot of sour dough recipes lately and just baked this one today in my Dutch oven. It’s fantastic!! Thank you for this recipe Gemma. It’s my new go-to.😉
Well done to you, Joanne. Thanks for sharing.

That looks amazing! And I do have all the ingredients in my house already with this pandemic going too! Good thing my mom managed to get a ton of flour.
Lucky you! Then let's get baking! Do share your bake here!
Thank you so much for creating and sharing this great video! 🙏 Easy to follow and very inspiring! Again, many thanks! 🙏

You’re my favorite chef. Congratulations on your son! He’s adorable!
Thank you for the kind words.
Gemma - Bravo!! Fabulous!!
Finally someone with simple, clear instructions for one single loaf, cup & spoon measurements and simple household items. Love, love the napkin/breadbasket tip and stand mixing bowl idea. Worked like a charm. After quite a few dense failures, and nearly giving up, I turned out a beautiful, perfect loaf of sourdough bread. Thank you so much.
BTW I live in Jerusalem used the AP flour here without a problem.
Now I want to try one with part rye flour & caraway seeds and and one with part ww flour.
Go for it, Chaya. Thank you for the kind words.

Thank you for your kind words.
I have my own starter and made this Saturday and cooked Sunday. The easiest and tastiest sour dough bread ever and we had 5 over for tea and it was a hit.
Well done, Elizabeth. Thank you for sharing.
I tried it and I love the end result. Mine got a tiny bit browner than yours and I dint got those big air pockets inside, I suppose I need to let it ferment for a couple more hours. But the end result was super delicious and quite simple, and it worked! Thanks a lot.
Well done, still!
Sourdough is always delicious and your sourdough recipe seems like no exception!
Thanks a million!
Monday I plan to make my first ever sourdough starter. Your previous recipe has encouraged me

Thank you for this video and recipe. I have just made a lovely loaf for the first time. I have tried some other sourdough recipes and found them too complicated and a bit overwhelming. I am really pleased with my attempt at this type of loaf.
I’m delighted to hear that, Catherine. Well done to you!
Thanks for sharing I tried your starter recipe first three days it didn’t do anything it was a little runny...on the third day I added some more flour to it and it started bubbling it was almost like the bubbles were at the bottom hiding!!! The fourth and fifth day it was bubbling more and it smelled like starter. I baked bread on Monday and it came out really good and delicious thank you again for sharing...I love the fact that I don’t have to feed it every day and that I can put it in the refrigerator take it out add some water...that really made my day! Thanks
'Well done to you! I'm glad your starter turned out well.
That is the best name for a starter! I’m jealous.
I've been looking out for this video since I grew my starter according to your starter video. Thank you! Would love to see more sourdough-based recipes, like cinnamon rolls perhaps? George is so adorable. My son has the same name 🤗
Thank you for sharing Tori. I am working on sourdough recipes, so stay tuned. Thank you for the kind words. Keep safe.

I so agree..she makes this look so much more “doable” not so stinkin’ complicated. Thank you...👏❤️
Truly simple and easy to understand! Thank you from the bottom of my heart! Been watching sourdough videos for weeks now to be ready when my starter is ready and I'm not kidding when I say I almost gave up on baking sourdough bread because it seemed too complicated without a science degree, which I don't have. Again, thank you.
Glad it was helpful! Carry on baking!
@@biggerbolderbaking Update: Bread came out nice and tasty. I'll bake another one for grandson when he is back from vacation this weekend, he loves bread as much as I do.
I love this recipe! Definitely, after the first rise, put in the fridge for another 24 hours or more hours to develop more flavor that is to die for. And thank you Gemma. I have learned so much from watching your videos.
I’m glad you found this helpful! Thank you for sharing.
Looks delicious!
Go ahead and give it a go, Tamara. You can find the link to the recipe in the caption above.
Yay I’m gonna try this
Go for it. Selah. Here's the complete recipe www.biggerbolderbaking.com/sourdough-bread-for-beginners/
Hello, thank you for your guide! So helpful!
I have a doubt, The temperature here is around 26-28 deg C- Quite hot, and humid as well.
I prepared a starter yesterday evening at around 6 pm with whole wheat flour and water. When I checked today at around 3 pm, the starter had risen drastically and was smelling sour and pungent. The starter hasn't gone flat, nor is there any mold. Should I feed it some more flour or throw it away?
I'm using her starter recipe and videos too. If it smells sour (like bread), it's fine. Follow her instructions - remove half and then feed it
We would enjoy seeing more of George. :)
Omg... ❤️ For the little one ❤️
Thank you for your kind words.
Wonderful sourdough bread😉
Bravissima Gemma 👏👏👏👏😘
Baby George is so so sweet when he sleeps👶😍
Thank you for your kind words.
Thank you, Thank you. Since I’ve been working on my starter, for about 4 months now, I’ve been trying to make a loaf of sourdough bread, with not happy results. Every one I’ve made turned out like a 10# brick of dough. Yesterday I started using your recipe, and today I baked my sourdough bread, with results, I would be proud of putting in any bakery window. Again Thank you so much. John 😊
Thrilled to hear that! Well done to you! Keep up your great work!

Good job keeping it alive!! I poured mine down the bin a week into the process😅 it felt like a weight was lifted from my shoulders 😆 Sourdough really does require a lot of dedication!!
It does. However, it's so well rewarding! Hope you give it another try.

@@biggerbolderbaking Thank you. I will!!!
Gemma, I love your recipes and videos, they have helped me so much! I have a question about sourdough, I tried two months ago, but should never get my starter strong enough. I’m thinking about buying a starter, do you sell them, or do you recommend anyone?
Sorry I don't. What did you use for your starter? Make a few changes, you'll be grand !
From now on, feed your starter at water: flour: starter ratio 1:1:1, twice a day (roughly every 12 hours) and keep it over the counter. Use unbleached (no chemicals) all purpose flour or unbleached bread flour. Whole wheat flour has more bran which will weigh down your bread to make it difficult to rise.
Use bottled water instead tap water which may have chemicals to slow down or kill your starter ( same thing applies flour). Warm it to around 45C or a little bit warmer than blood temperature.
You should use your starter when it's close to or at its peak time to achieve the best result including best oven spring. Each time it behaves differently. I suggest you take time to learn your starter better. To watch the highest point it can get . To test whether it’s ready to use: mix your starter to distribute bubbles evenly then drop a spoonful of starter into a bowl of water. If it floats, it’s ready to go.
Thank you for the super simple sourdough recipe. I tried to do one recipe and after all the hard work the bread didn’t rise up😢 I felt so much disappointed.
I sure will try your recipe next week and hopefully it will work.
I have been trying different recipes that includes sourdough cakes, biscuits, brownies, pizza, and three different kids of bread some of the recipes results were amazing and tasty 😋 some you feel it cannot be swallowed.
Might be the best name for a starter. Breaddie Vedder.
Love sourdough but normally resort to buying it as I don't always have time to make it with my own recipe - may have to give this one a go. Thank you for sharing Gemma! 👍🙂
Happy to hear it, Elliott. Let me know how you get on!
Literally drooling. Lol! 😋👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Give it a try ! Hope you enjoy!
Hi Gemma. Your recipes along with the way you instruct are awsome_fast and easy :-) Thanks.
3 questions:
1. after i use the sour dough starter on day 7, how do I maintain the rest of it for future use: feed and keep it in the fridge? no more room temperature. This is what I understood from your video. Please confirm. In that case what if I want to make another loaf on day 8. The feeding + fridge time (over night) will give me enough yeast and functional to use?
2. where to buy your collection of mug meals (only)?
3. what is the volume of the mugs that you use for your mug meal demos? I don't think your are using the 250 mL, looks smaller like a tea cup.
Many thanks again.
Elli
I’ve used other starter recipes....no luck....this recipe is perfect
I'm happy to hear that, Nancy.
