Thank you so much for another informative video. Many years ago, when hearing protection was not so much an issue, I regularly attended loud concerts, most were over 1 hour. I have had continuous tinnitus since August 1982 from attending concerts and at that time, it was the consensus that nothing could be done and to get used to it. My hearing loss was within “normal” limits and hearing aids were not considered an option. I usually carry a set of foam earplugs in my backpack but never felt they were good enough. Back in the 80’s, it was possible to get custom earplugs by mail. I was sent a kit with a couple of otoblocks a syringe and compound and was expected to make my own impressions and send them back to have the earplugs made. I pressured my doctor for hearing aids once i discovered they might help the continuous tinnitus since 1982. I got a lot of pushback as my loss was just a little outside of normal range. I don’t know if it would have changed my behavior knowing what I know now about hearing protection but at least I would have the option to reduce the possibility of the tinnitus I currently have. Hearing aids have helped reduce the effects of tinnitus. I still have good and bad days, but they have made life tolerable.
Thank you for sharing, Laura. I can’t believe they wanted you to place your own blocks and complete your own impressions! I’m glad hearing aid use has made your tinnitus more tolerable. 😊
Regarding the ear plugs on strings. I ride my bicycle with these in because I have a hearing loss and the traffic is very loud. They work fine for that and I can pull them out to hear other riders. However, the wind noise generated by bike riding is transmitted by those plastic strings into the ear plugs, making THAT noise louder. I've found a pair of fitted filtered earplugs that I can leave in during the ride and still hear (somewhat) other riders talking. They dampen the noise but don't catch the wind like the stringed ones. When I'm by myself, I go with the foam earplugs.
my question is about shooting in an indoor range. one of the charts i saw mention that the min. NRR rating for over the ear protection should be 28db. The best rating i could find in the electronic muffs was 23db. i was told to use both foam and over the ear to increase the number but it would not be the same as adding the two ratings together. How do i calculate what using both would be
Hai iam using Signia hearing aids from past two years , my left ear always feel closed , when do nose blocking exercises it open , after few minutes it closes again , I consulted ent doctors they said no problem is there , plz suggest remedy 🙏
Question: Can foam earplugs assist in conversation while in a noisy environment by reducing constant extraneous noise? Example: Im involved in a hobby where we ride motorized speeders on railroad tracks on guided excursions. The metal wheels on the metal railroad tracks are noisy, the wind, while not directly in our face, is noticeable and the noise from the 20 hp motor is noticeable. Am I on to something that my passengers are unaware of? I find that I can hear my rider’s voices better with foam plugs and my passengers, who refuse to wear ear plugs cannot understand my voice.
Ear caps are meant to be affixed to a corresponding headband. They do not sit as deeply in the ear canal and, therefore, provide a lower level of hearing protection.
Are you aware you take the rating subtract 7 and divide it by 2 ? Even with a 30 nrr and use of 30 nrr plugs you’ll only get a maximum of 16.5 decibels . You can only get another 5 decibels if you add the plugs that’s it. I was told this by several manufacturers of ear protection 3m , Honeywell . Your thoughts?
My mom and I both have been dealing with high pitched ringing/buzzing for the last two years. Some days are worse than others, but seem to have intensified when we changed from flip phones to android. Would these plugs help at all?
Ear plugs would not help unless you’re in a loud noise situation. In your case, you’d be better off using Sound Therapy. If you go back about 4 months on videos, I’ve got one on this topic!
I completely disagree with how many times you can wear a disposable earplug. I have been wearing them to sleep for years. I wear them until they are no longer stiff enough to insert. This is usually 3 weeks. I have never had any problems.
If you’re not using them for hearing protection and rather for just a better nights sleep, then you can reuse! But for hearing protection purposes for very loud noises, once only.
Another excellent presentation.!

So true! Didn’t think about that - the strings could totally direct that sounds right into your ears. 😅
Nice video.
But could you explain the NRR derating ?

What about the buildup of earwax if using them every night, how can I clean my ear safely after using them ???
what do you think about earplugs vs high fidelity ? seems to me earplugs are better in terms of maximum nrr, high fidelity arent just enough.

Not really, you may want to get speech filtered plugs like the Phonak Serenity Choice.
So what is the correct way to insert foam plugs? What is recommended for shooting sports sound protection?
Check out the video linked in the description: You're Using Hearing Protection WRONG!
Are foam earplugs sufficient protection for a concert?
What is the difference between ear plugs and ear caps Howard Leight?
Ear caps are meant to be affixed to a corresponding headband. They do not sit as deeply in the ear canal and, therefore, provide a lower level of hearing protection.

People are thinking they’re getting more protection but in reality they are not. Pretty disturbing.
What app that measures decibel for IPhone?
NIOSH Sound Level Meter is awesome.

Its probably from Covid, many people are getting it. Nicotine is the answer. chew some nicotine gum. Watch Dr. Ardis who talks about it

Powertools, rock music and door slamming all bad for hearing.

It's a craft...nobody knows leadership buy example..... Blame it on Tinnitus lol....
