We need a LOT MORE OF THESE stories!! Love Al, love his love of food, love his intelligent curiosity, love his respect for history and culture. MORE, PLEASE! ❤️
As a New Yorker, it is so nice to learn the history of the food I always crave for each morning. Thank you for this informative clip. Al did a great job narrating the story. I watched it from the beginning to end. Impeccable story telling. Well done!
Many Jewish delis used to have a poster with a smiling Eskimo holding a bagel and it had a caption that said '' You don't have to be Jewish to love bagels''. Anybody that knows anything about good food like a good bagel so you must have good taste in food.
I live in Quebec Russ & Daughters get thier Salmon shipped to them from a place 20 mins from me ...And along with Nova scotia Lobster And montreal smoked meat Put any of that into a Montreal Bagel ( smaller, thinner, sweeter and denser, with a larger hole,) from St-Viateur Bagel Sesame is my fav Alot of people like the All Dressed Throw 4 of them into a bag with a hot coffee Head down to something quiet/peaceful For me the St lawrence river where Yes even Blue whales can be seen...As i pick up fresh Bagels with the very fresh fish/lobster slices The girlfriend gets the coffee Her pate's ....It would be like you going to Philippe's And getting the french dip on a bagel And having a picnic at Runyon Canyon....That's decadent.. You should try Montreal Smoked meat from Schwartz's Deli Montreal (Online) Or the one in New york Katz Deli Online Both pretty really good I know Costco in Canada Has the schwartz's frozen smoked meat
@@freakyflow So we're talking bagel and lox, with a coffee, consumed while looking at Blue whales in the St. Lawrence river? Sign me up! Sounds sublime. I'll take that over Philippe's and Runyon Canyon any day. (You're pretty familiar with L.A., I see.)
And now that you know that Acme supplies Russ and Daughter's, and you can also get Acme at Trader Joe's, do you feel silly? 😅 Also, you can get it at Costco. They happen to have great nova!
@@skontheroad I've never tried the lox from Trader Joe's. Several years ago, I did try the lox from Costco, and it was terrible. So perhaps the Acme thing is more recent. Russ and Daughters is considered as having the best lox in NYC. We recently got some for a friend in Los Angeles, and he said it was the best lox he'd ever had. And, BTW, as with sushi or sashimi, the way the lox is cut is part of the deal. Russ and Daughters cuts their lox so thin you can almost see through it.
My family has been going to Russ & Daughters since it first opened. Every Sunday growing up my father would take me with him to pick up the nova, (gaspe salmon) bialys, bagels, herring in cream sauce, matjes herring, sturgeon, sable, baked salmon, olives, sour tomatoes, pickles, cream cheese, tomatoes, onions and lots of lemons. Oh and lox wings; my favorite. Let’s not forget the chocolate babka, chocolate twists and halavah! A beautiful feast. My brothers both live out of state now but have their R&D fix shipped!!! If you haven’t been there go. Enjoy.
I’ll never forget the shock when I went to Russ & Daughters for a lox bagel and asked for a little roe on it. The cashier turned the iPad around and the total was $45! Russ & Daughters leaves an impression one way or another 😂
Just buy the ingredients from the market and eat at the little park across the street. There's a coffee vendor there too. You'll save a huge amount of $$
It makes me so happy how one of my favorite foods is so tied to my culture :) and how all New Yorkers love it so much. Proud to be descended from Jewish immigrants
And so awesome to hear the history or Russ and Daughters one of my all time favorite restaurants. Love the super heebdster and often get a massive spread for family gatherings. Best memories
Love that they are focusing on the origins of a bagel as a food brought to the US and made by by Eastern European Jewish immigrants. Many other UA-cam videos on bagels completely erase this important history!
I do my own flax seed and garlic bagel ( low sodium) and no preservatives after watching some tutorials on youtube and I was so surprised that my bagels were far better than the industrial frozen ones. I am so proud of my home-made bagels ;-)
I can't prouve it but I heard many times say that the Montreal's bagels, where I live, are the best in the world, including those from NYC, where I lived too but I didn't taste those mentioned. What I can say is that the Montreal's bagels are so good and very comforting during our winters!
Montreal bagels are 100% the best bagels in the world. NY bagels are more like buns with a tiny hole in the middle. Montreal bagels are nice and thin, crispy on the outside and soft inside with a large hole in the middle.
Luis. No way. And kartofle123 you are eating a flagel or a bialy. You will not get a bialy that compares to a New York one (even on Long Island) it’s the NYC water that makes our bagels and bialys the best there are. Just sayin!
I knew a Federman when he was a medical student, now a physician. only jewish boy whose family was disappointed he went to med school instead of staying in the family business...
Great segment Al, I grew up on the Lower East Side back when Ratner's was still open and know a good bagel and lox sandwich when I eat one. All great in this episode except...the vegan thing, because it is so far afield from the bagel and lox and Jewish culture. I grew up in a place with old timers eating herring with their hands, and spewing Yiddish folktales. They would never turn away from a piece of salmon, smoked or pickled, nor from shmaltz herring with kichel. Vegan, what's vegan they'd say as they spread chrein (horseradish) on their gefilte fish. Basically, you want to be vegan, gezunterheyt (go ahead). But sorry ladies, carrots will never be lox. You might want to make tzimmes out of them instead!
the only incorrect statement was that they are serving Kosher food. since they are not kosher certified, {{and many items cannot be kosher [like sturgeon ] }} . they had a kosher outlet until covid ,if i am not mistaken....
I just literally had a bagel and cream cheese and tomato onion and lox! yes I love a good bagel!!! Im in New York Daily for work and I live in New Jersey but nothing beats a good bagel! I pray to God the resolve the cream cheese shortage or else New yorkers will revolt
This was an awesome video … but the only thing I can think of after watching the whole thing is that a really high percentage of Acme Smoked Fish Company employees are probably married to other Acme Smoked Fish Company employees. Fish and smoke can’t be easy to fall asleep next to.
Wrong…..that Canadian connection with smoked salmon is such a misnomer…..smoked fish & smoked salmon is definitely also a Baltic + Scandinavian + German thing just like bagels so both most def came from the Jews and the old world……not Canada????? I hate how these pop-historian hipsters just make up narratives thinking “who will know the difference or check my facts…as long as it sounds good” that dude was just making up sound bite connections as he talked…..I guarantee you that the smoked fish on a bagel thing had absolutely nothing to do with Canada….
Cmon New York stop playing yall freaking out over a shortage of cream cheese when you can just make it how you gona act like y’all the kings when yah buggin over some cream cheese
How NY claims its the city that never sleeps is just a lie and a hilarious joke. Try and go to diner in Brooklyn or Times Square at 2am. Its closed because they sleep lol.

This is a great video, Al Roker has a knack for reporting/storytelling, he really draws you in, thank you!
I am from NYC , a black woman and I really Enjoy Lox and Bagels. Yummy thanks Mr.Roker

I enjoy Al Roker coverage about Bagels and Lox. Now I am heading to the fridge for a nice breakfast of that sort. Hmmmm!

One product that caught my eye was 'Belly-Lox'. I assume that is the higher-fat portion of the fish.
Wonderful story!! Thanks Al!
Great segment! Can’t wait to see more similar episodes by Al!
Dont forget the capers too! Prob on the smoked like I enjoy
Love ya AL! You remind me so much of my dad. 💞
I’ll never forget the shock when I went to Russ & Daughters for a lox bagel and asked for a little roe on it. The cashier turned the iPad around and the total was $45! Russ & Daughters leaves an impression one way or another 😂
Welcome to NY! Lol
Now I always get the roe. Yes it’s expensive but soooo delicious.
Just buy the ingredients from the market and eat at the little park across the street. There's a coffee vendor there too. You'll save a huge amount of $$
Great story. I really enjoyed it. I'm so hungry now. 😫
Love this!!! I never had their bagel but now I have a good reason to be back in NYC 😍
Thank you so much for making this! This is wonderful!
Mr. Roker's tour of the smokehouse was some quality journalism. GO TO THE SOURCE!🧐
Finally something positive. More of this please.
I've been to Orchard Grocer and Mooshoes, the food at the grocer is excellent (at least what I've tasted!). Great report.
Great video Al! Your the best! Looking forward to more food vlogs in the future!
Looks so delicious!
Bagel with sable or whitefish salad 🥰
It makes me so happy how one of my favorite foods is so tied to my culture :) and how all New Yorkers love it so much. Proud to be descended from Jewish immigrants

My favorite food for the morning and used to drive 20 miles to a Jewish Deli to have a lox and bagel 🥯
Loved this segment hope there are more to come ❤️👍
I LOVE BAGEL AND LOX! F- E - E -D ME! Thanks Al and Producers. Love you.
I do my own flax seed and garlic bagel ( low sodium) and no preservatives after watching some tutorials on youtube and I was so surprised that my bagels were far better than the industrial frozen ones. I am so proud of my home-made bagels ;-)
You were surprised that something home made was better than industrial frozen???
ess a bagel was my favorite. now i live in portland and its a bagel desert. sad.
Thanks a lot! Good job!
Excellent story; however, the sound wasn't. Very difficult to hear. Goes from ok sound, to can barely hear it. Very variable.
Sir,
We are so sorry. Please forgive us. Have a Blessed day. Can you forgive us. Give me a big hug.
Nice story AL.
Looking cool.

@@cindyweitzmann I've tried both. Have you?
nyc bagels are horrible. Shouldn't even be called a bagel. It's a roll
@@talksmoke1190 100% agree.
Love the food there. Best in NY
Yummy yummy
I. Love. Bagels.
His programming still running?
What a awesome man I wish I could have met him.

Bagels are from Kraków Poland, my parents hometown! 🇵🇱 🥯 ☝🏻

Yum!!!
Wow
R&D bagels are amazing but prepare to wait an hour or 2 in line
This vid's sound quality is very uneven. Sometimes nearly inaudible.
When the UA-cam inserted ad comes on, it's far too loud.
What is locks?
Montreal still makes hand-rolled bagels everywhere. Better? YES!
Shhhhh... Montreal bagels are THE best!!
Nope, they're good, but just not as good as a New York bagel
Different. Not better!
Where’s Jada, Styles, and Sheek? Thought this was about the LOX!😂
the only incorrect statement was that they are serving Kosher food. since they are not kosher certified, {{and many items cannot be kosher [like sturgeon ] }} . they had a kosher outlet until covid ,if i am not mistaken....
but acme is generally kosher products....
0:20 What you ate down there, wasn't a bagel.
I just literally had a bagel and cream cheese and tomato onion and lox! yes I love a good bagel!!! Im in New York Daily for work and I live in New Jersey but nothing beats a good bagel! I pray to God the resolve the cream cheese shortage or else New yorkers will revolt

Cincinnati makes a darn good bagel as well!!

I've had a Russ bagel and it's okay. Kossar's is much better.
Russ & Daughters got their bialys from Kossars. The were the best
👋🏼😃 ah-ha ah-ha ah-ha
Someone should of said Holy Ghost so he would malfunction
Hogwash. Los Angeles bagels and lox rules.
How NY claims its the city that never sleeps is just a lie and a hilarious joke. Try and go to diner in Brooklyn or Times Square at 2am. Its closed because they sleep lol.
Go to Warsaw or Krakow if you want a real bagel!
No bagels in Poland 😂
@Green Machine We all left (or worse). Who is left to make a bagel??
Overpriced
Obviously none of these yahoos heard of a montreal bagel. Makes the nyc bagel taste like a salty pile of dough
Wrong. Montreal bagels ain't as good
I'm sorry I can Take hes obnoxiously obnoxious!
How on Earth can food be "iconic"? Has anyone ever actually looked up that worn cliche? Let's start the new year by never using it again. Please.
new york overrated and overpriced
So please never come back!
