This was the most difficult tuba solo I ever encountered. I performed this solo my Junior (11th grade) year for the UIL (Texas based) Solo and Ensemble competition in the spring of 2000. This solo was classified as a class 1 on the competition level in fhe state of Texas. In all respect this solo tought me how to play the tuba alot better. My techniques were sharper, which got me to practice much more efficient. I received a Division 1 rating on this solo on the regional level. When I got to the state level I got 5th place. After all these years I can remember Aire and Boure'e note for note
Wow! That is some impressive playing. Being a tuba player myself, I realize that you're playing that in a pretty acoustically dead room, and even so, you manage to sound pretty darn good! Keep up the good work Mr. Peter! I know for a fact that you inspire many young tuba players around the world, and you're a role model to me as well.
I'm playing this piece this year. it is weird and cool at the same time this is my fifth year on Tuba and a now three year all region player and I've been watching you for years and you are the whole reason I started playing this instrument. I listend to you play the tema region piece slowly and I plays and listened to you to practice and last Saturday I place 4th in the region thank you Tuba peter.
Picking out appropriate solos is better suited for private lesson teachers than band directors. I usually recommend this piece to those with 4-5 years tuba experience. With 2 years I recommend stuff like the Handel / Bell "Honor & Arms." But if you've turned in all your forms and are past the point of no return, play the hard, high passages down an octave until you can hear them really well, then try to play them in the correct octave. Good luck!
anyone who's ever played this knows that there is no space to grab a breath...nice job Peter...this " simple" solo , is anything but.....I played the Air a tad slower, and really emoted ( Come Sweet Death , right ?) and the Bouree a bit faster , exaggerating dynamics - nice job again...jamsav
Last year (2015), I was in the ninth grade and I chose to play this solo for my recital in June of that year. We were only required to do a level 4 RCM piece, but for some reason I chose this solo which is a level 8 RCM piece. I started practicing in May and at that time, I've only been playing the tuba for six months. I was so stressed during practice b/c I felt unprepared, but I kept practicing with the help of this video and I was able to get a 90% (an A) on my recital.
Yea! do it! I played this piece in 8th grade, but took down parts of the bourree down an octave. Either way, you'll be amazed to see how much you've improved when you play it again later on in high school.
This is my playing test for band this year...I'm only a freshman in high school, so seeing comments like "This is the most difficult solo I've ever encountered" is really imtimidating. Wish me luck!
+Chi Wrath oh nooooooooooo! This is a high school piece, and there are much more difficult things out there. The biggest difficulties in this is range development and a few big note jumps. But it isn't terribly fast, and you can practice and work it up easy enough, I would presume.
I'm thirteen and I played this piece as my placement audition at Interlochen. I did really well and was placed as first chair out of three tubas who were older than me. I also was placed in Intermediate Wind Symphony and Intermediate Symphony Orchestra. But just so you all know, it's not a super hard piece. If you want something a bit harder then you should do Largo and Presto. I'm working on it now ;)
Super Tuba I can imagine this piece being pretty easy for people who use high notes a lot, sadly in middle school you barely get above a high F. Also I just noticed this guy is playing this way too slow.
I'm a junior playing this for a memorized solo and I just started practicing and Bourree pain in my neck, but my performace is months off so I got plenty of time to practice.
pretty good! my thoughts are when you have two eighth notes followed by a quarter note such as at 1:56 and at 3:16 the quarter note needs to be longer. Just a little bit of theory about that period's music. but other than that very good!
Very nice playing! The Komm Susser Tod chorale did come off as a bit slow and draggy in my humble opinion. Very accurate slotting and pitching in all of it. It's probably a poor mic because of course the sound didn't sound very full. Great playing over all! I have this solo as well and the Bouree is incorrectly named. It is not Bach's Second Violin Sonata. It is actually the 6th movement of Bach's Pasacaglia I suite for violin titled Bouree. It is BWV 1002.
Very nice sound. As everyone is saying, the breathing is a problem. Long tones and breathing gym would be helpful. Also, place your breaths more in sync with the phrases. Almost never take a breath on a bar line, it really breaks the flow. I think you have good control of the F tuba. One note (the low A) was problematic. Check out some alternate fingerings with a tuner. I liked the eighth note style in the Bouree but personally would play the quarter notes in a marcato style. Good luck!
I had a long discussion with my private lesson teacher about how the first section, before the cut time mark, represents the 5 stages of grief, seeing how the title is 'come sweet death'. Thoughts/style suggestions?
I can't believe this is a class 1 solo, it's too easy. Before you say I haven't looked at the sheet music, I have the music and have to memorize it by febuary.
@chrisvega3 If you played this solo then you would understand why you would need to breathe like that im just happy the arranger wrote in alot of breath marks when he transposed this piece to tuba or everybody would die in the middle of the song lol
I'm in 8th grade and I have only had it for 4 or 5 months. I stared on the trombone. Wish me luck. I can play it well but only a little faster than this guy.
I'm a freshman, and this is my 3rd year playing. i honestly think it is an easy solo. last year i played honor and arms and is was too easy. I sightread air and bourre. If you practice, im sure you can get it.
I'm playing this for an audition and competition (I'm 13). And good playing, technique wise, but like... In air there was absolutely no musicality and hardly no dynamic contrast! And check ur last note on both. Sounded a bit out of tune (maybe it was just my audio) and try taking bourree a bit faster. Actually a lot faster. Your dragging ALOT.
To the idiot who slammed peter for his playing. You should be a prison guard and not a person around young people. art is a celebration of all the good things about life, not nasty ,negative thoughts. go apply for a job where you can be miserable.
I wish you would stop putting these videos on. My students find them and get terrible ideas about phrasing and style by listening to you. Take some lessons before you post anymore please

I am in 8th grade and I am playing this at a solo festival. This video will really help me. Just got the solo today😋
Good luck! I hope I can help.

I have planned this piece before: while it may be challenging, it is quite fun!
This is my playing test for band this year...I'm only a freshman in high school, so seeing comments like "This is the most difficult solo I've ever encountered" is really imtimidating. Wish me luck!
+Chi Wrath The Bourree is where the tough sections are. The Air is a breeze. No worries, practice, have faith.

Lmao i'm a 7th grader and this is my second playing tuba. This is 2 years later but.

Super Tuba in doing this shit rn and I want to kms

holy shit! and i'm suppose to play this for my FIRST ever NYSSMA??? dayum sir, you have awesome tone control
really good sound i must say, it was much easier to follow along with you playing then some of the others on here
Holy crap!!!
This is my solo in school!!!
I had no freaking idea you played this...
I'm going to use you as a reference now!!!
=D
@iwannafite I agree. it says Come Sweet Death on it :)
I'm a junior playing this for a memorized solo and I just started practicing and Bourree pain in my neck, but my performace is months off so I got plenty of time to practice.
Yes. Valve no.5.
pretty good! my thoughts are when you have two eighth notes followed by a quarter note such as at 1:56 and at 3:16 the quarter note needs to be longer. Just a little bit of theory about that period's music. but other than that very good!
I remember doing this for solo and ensemble a few years ago in high school. I got a division 2. I should have practiced more!
connect the quarter notes more, pay attention to dynamics(loud, soft, etc.)
Very nice playing! The Komm Susser Tod chorale did come off as a bit slow and draggy in my humble opinion. Very accurate slotting and pitching in all of it. It's probably a poor mic because of course the sound didn't sound very full.

going to use just bourree for my berklee audition. wish me luck
@TheMendoza0011 Play loud, breathe deep, breathe often, don't stop.
How on earth do you do this with that few breaths? You do an outstanding job with breathing.
@iwannafite im not in college but this is my solo for solo and ensemble contests
GENIOOOOOOOOOOO
@tubadude023 B+S 'Perantucci PT-65.

I'm playing this piece for my Eight Grade Solo and Ensemble. 0.0
I can't believe this is a class 1 solo, it's too easy. Before you say I haven't looked at the sheet music, I have the music and have to memorize it by febuary.
I'm going to possibly do this solo for a festivle.do you have any advice on how to play it?
@tubageek94 I used this for Texas Southern. Got a nice lil scholarship.
@sighimbored That's deep. :)
This one got moved down to a class two! I'm triggered!
it's class 3 now
Come sweet death is marked at q=30. How fast do you want it.
I'm a freshman at Galena Park and I'm playing this piece for my solo competition piece. Any tips?
Could you do a lesson on vibrato?
now, how is that used? i play a four valve tuba. what are the advantages to a five valve tuba?
@chrisvega3 If you played this solo then you would understand why you would need to breathe like that im just happy the arranger wrote in alot of breath marks when he transposed this piece to tuba or everybody would die in the middle of the song lol
does that have rotary valves or piston? and does it have 4 valves?
this was my solo last year!
^_^
I really want to use it for my college audition this year, do you have advice?
What if I mess up? (Also playing it)
emotional content is needed. Otherwise really nice tone. William Bell would be proud
@williammc1995 Good look young man. Keep grindin'
Hello sir. Im playing thia for my audition. What tenpo would you recommend to do for bouree?
i like it
i just think the b flat in the last line of the first page somewhere in the middle of it sounds funny to me, but its written that way so eh
jak mozna brac w takich miejscach powietrze........sound Oki......
So Bourree is faster than air. Who else is using this for a college audition piece?
is that a trigger i see?!?!
@sighimbored: Style= dark sound, mellow, but make sure you're not playin' it dankly.
@souljiaboi2 no, he should not !!! Listen to Bill Bell ...ever ? Do you know who he is ? have you ever played this piece....well ?
Try this with a three valve tuba. Not easy at all.
NTgreat98 same
Allstate audition piece
im doing this for my solo, im a freshman
I'm in 8th grade and I have only had it for 4 or 5 months. I stared on the trombone. Wish me luck. I can play it well but only a little faster than this guy.
Good luck!
dude, how old are you. I'm a tuba performance major and you look like your late 20's I'm 19 barely 20...
watch dynamics
I'm a freshman, and this is my 3rd year playing. i honestly think it is an easy solo. last year i played honor and arms and is was too easy. I sightread air and bourre. If you practice, im sure you can get it.
yeah i was gonna say the same thing
placed*
4 pistons + 1 rotary.
@iwannafite i am 4 berklee
This was my solo as a freshman. Man u really need to fix where you are breathing at in the beginning
@sighimbored I take it slow, Imo its supposed to be depressing.
@MrGhudon his breathing IS ATROCIOUS
I was going to say
I'm playing this for an audition and competition (I'm 13). And good playing, technique wise, but like... In air there was absolutely no musicality and hardly no dynamic contrast! wacht out the breathing. beutifull sound, but very poor musicallity... If the original it´s violin u have too think like one... But is very good =)
To the idiot who slammed peter for his playing. You should be a prison guard and not a person around young people. art is a celebration of all the good things about life, not nasty ,negative thoughts. go apply for a job where you can be miserable.
Get the next note right and keep going.
@DefyingGravity671 Start slow. Playing fast and wrong is still wrong and only makes you sound insecure.
i would play the piece faster
in my opinion
Try breathing less in the middle of your phrases.
Try and breathe with your diaphragm and also not through your bass 🤦♂️
