- In the video I compare the last 2 sportster models Harley Davidson makes. The 1200 Iron and the Forty-Eight. I'm a big fan of both of these bikes.
If you're interested in these bikes they are available at the time of this video going up.

I bought the 48 in billiard teal last Jan. They named it "48" because that's about how far you can go before stopping for gas. My low fuel warning comes on between 50 - 60 miles, and I usually reload before hitting 75 just to be safe. Having said that, I would still buy it again in a heartbeat.
The 48 has been my top choice of Sportster Harley's since it was first launched. Never owned one, but always loved the styling.
@@davidwoest3701 I love the 72. I got the 2013 sportster 72 in lucky candy green! Even though Harley Davidson only made them from 2012-2016, it’s still my favorite sportster ever made.
I bought a 48 and bobbed it out, and I need to fill up after a couple days of commuting (I get a little under 50mpg). It looks so badass and I constantly have people complimenting me or taking photos of it at stop lights. I love that bike so, so much.
I have a '19 Iron 1200 and just love everything about it. A set of Ohlins shocks on the rear really livened the ride up and made the bike comfortable for longer rides. I usually ride long enough I'm stopping at a gas station once even with the larger tank, so the smaller tank on the 48 would be a little problematic. The look of the 48 is awesome though and for just cruising around town, the fuel range would just not be a big deal. I wish I could have both the 48 and Iron and customize them both.
I love my 17' 48. I bought mine early october 2022, was my first short season and no regrets so far.
I’m 5’9”, with a 30” inseam. I bought a 2021 48 a few days ago, and for me, the riding position works really well.
Also, if I were to decide between my 48 and the Iron 1200, after putting miles on my 48, I’d pick the 48 in a heartbeat. I rode a 48 with pretty much the same bars as the ones on the Iron 1200, much prefer the lower bars.
Then there’s the looks of the 48… IMO, it’s the best looking Sportster out there.
I love how the 48 looks and that the one I have a $500 deposit on now…
Waiting did it in ship in… NY
This channel has some quality content, and I can for sure see it growing in the near future. The production value, and quality of information is solid. With that being said, a 2021 Low Rider S and 2021 Street Bob comparison would be nice! I’d like your take.
I have the Iron. My preference in riding position out weighed the bigger front end. Fun around town bike.
I own a 21' iron 1200 for about 7 months now. I am 6 ft 240 and its my daily ride to work and back. I flipped my mirror s for better visibility and added harley forward controls, and have a two brothers pipe coming. Don't cheap out on the forward controls. My buddy did and they sent him trash parts that didn't really fit.
another thing to mention, the seating position on the 48 is tiring due to the lower handle bar and the stretched seating position especially with the forward controls, my recommendation is either get the 48 special or get a taller handle bars (like the one on the iron) as after market choice, it will make your ride easier and you will be much in control especially on a higher speed once you rev that throttle
Can’t wait to pick up my forty eight after winter, got 8K saved for it already
I bought an Iron 1200 last year, specifically, to get mid controls and raised bars. Based on looks alone, I would’ve chosen the 48.
I own a new '21 48 Sportster. I based it solely on emotion. I have other bikes for distance and this bike with a stage 1 is just pure fun and personality! Love the vids.
I ALMOST decided on the 48. The peanut tank just doesn’t do it for me needed something bigger but the appeal is there, just doesn’t make much since to me to have heavier wheels with a smaller tank lol
Ended up with the matte black 1200 and had them put the deadwood green tank and fenders on it from a new 883
So far what do you think of the 48?
@@jamesedward4283 For what it is, it's fun. I wanted something a little more basic, just me and the bike with no other fluff and it does good at that. The bike has character. Keep in mind I have 7 other bikes so I have a variety of other bikes to ride when I want speed or options.

Just saw your reply and yeah totally agree it's pretty cool lots of fun good modding bike to can build to your personality
Hows the riding position? im not too worried about the tank because i just plan to use it to go grab food at a bar and cruise around town.
Personally I would like to have the engine trim package on the iron. I like just a little bit of bling.
I have as you can see , i love the apes but i think i would go taller maybe to my shoulder height & i ride in the summer months 250
miles to work & home & weekends up to 300 so the gel seat & mid range pegs are comfortable looking now to get a quick attach windshield to keep rocks & bugs out of my face & im am a young 63 1/2 ive been riding since 14
I got rhe sportster ns 2 months ago love it
Great bike!!
Dude I love both as well but Im a 44 yr old Cruiser. Im heavily thinkin 48 soon. They just look CLASSIC! I think if I was in my 20s id get a 1200. The more upright ride just SMOKES !!! Ive loved demo’ing both but you can Rip it up on the taller , mid peg Iron. Great review as always man
I wanna do a sporty build soon. Pretty easy to get to the 100hp mark and then you have a rocket!
I am almost 50 and will pick up my 2020 1200 iron tomorrow! Can’t wait. I love the black out look. Don’t like the chrome to much. Also like the handle bars more and the bigger tank. All in al I like almost everything from the iron more. Although, the fat tires and front forks are awesome!
regarding the handle bars, it would have been a much more fair comparison done between the iron 1200 X the 48 special (look wise)
My wife just got the 1200 iron, love the bike, unfortunately to small for me.
What is the piece that sticks out on the ends of the the foot pegs?
Hate the cowel / wind shield on the iron.
Is it simple to take the thing off?
Another awesome review brother 😁!
Thank you, MUCH appreciated!
Any news on what is replacing them next year?
could you put the 48 forks onthe iron
I would choose the iron. Mini ape Handlebars and bigger tank are the reasons.
I have the iron 1200! Granted i bought it home an took t-bars, grips Harley fairing! Turned it into a club style bike
Now we are talking!!
That 48 is my dream bike 🤩
Great review!!
I honestly don't mind the small peanut tank on the 48, even if I have to stop more frequent for gas ill look good doing it hahah
Love the peanut tank
Iron all day but less that bc mid controls so id def be adding the forwards
I got the 48 special and it’s great
Nice dude!!
Good choice. Thanks
I'm 6ft and love both bikes but they both have good features..love the style and bigger iron tank ..need forward controls as the 48 has..like the taller bars on iron and the wide front end on the 48 lol desions..am I too tall to begin with
You aren't too tall but based on what you like, you're going to spend money to get either setup how you want it. haha. I'd also throw in the Softail Standard in the mix if I were you. 13,500 is a little more money but you gain a bigger engine, 6 speed trans, more suspension, and a bigger frame. You won't have forwards from factory or a fat tire but those other things would help a lot at 6ft.
Finally in the process of getting a house. Once I do, I'm gonna get an Iron 1200
I hope you are OK with used. I hear this bike is being discontinued.
I like the 48 bc the headlight is better looking 4 me
I prefer the iron with forward controls.
I like the 48
Love the looks of the 48, but that tank capacity sucks.
I got that same Iron 1200, mine has a Stage 1 and with a keyless ignition.
I also got the keyless ignition with the alarm, still need the stage 1 with the short shots. I decided to go with the looks over the sound to start and had the dealer swap the tank and fenders with the 883 deadwood green
@@Deathlynumb the heck? I didn’t know they did that. I have the same color tank in the video but think Ima get it wrapped a flat black. Oh I also have the V&H fuel pack.
@@djp_712 yeah the guy at the dealer said they usually don’t do it but the 883 and 1200 are the exact same and I wouldn’t leave with the bike unless it was in the green scheme. So I got the matte black like in the video with the green looks killer
48 looks awesome.....
I’m 6.2 . Would a forty eight or sportster iron be better choice for me?
How about softtail or street Bob?
At that height I'd definitely go with one of the softail. Street Bob would be a great option in that family.
Im 6 foot 250 lbs & the 1200 iron is a cool ride , my last ride was a 1340cc 1999 RoadKing Classic all decked out for long trips but i dont do super long trips any longer just to work witch is 25 miles one way 5 days a week & weekends around 300 . so just go test ride the one's you like & have fun..
Looking at the 48 but prefer the higher bars of the 1200.
If you like the bobber look, a 48 with some bars looks great!
I have HD sportster custom...
The iron but with the 48 front forks!
Surprised you didnt mention the mirrors on the 48. terrible design with limited vision just saying love my 2016 48 !
I should have because I also hate them. All I see is myself lol.
I could never buy a bike with a 2.1 gallon tank. I’d never complete any ride without stopping for gas. I haven’t been on a ride this year where I would have made the whole ride without a stop.
Get the regular Sportster 1200. The 48 has front end wash out problems. Front end is too light for a fat tire. I had one and will never own another one. They're not safe.
I own the 48
mid controls and highway pegs.
Sporster 1200. I don’t like the fat front tire.
I’m 5’5 which one do you prefer for a first bike
Honestly either would work. I'd go to the dealership and sit on both and see which on feels best.
Nice, you replied, ok here’s the real question, I’m wanna buy a bike mainly for commuting to work, so wifey can use the car, and it’s an hour to work and another hour back on a highway, would you still recommend a sportster or go bigger, and keep in mind this is gonna be my first ever bike
@@jahwahsah691 Get the 1200 if you'll be commuting an two hours everyday. You don't want to get caught going late to work, missing a tank refill, and then hitting rush hour and running out of gas. Two hours commute sounds like a solid 65-75ish miles per day.
Would of made more sense to put the bigger tank on the one with the forward controls, honestly what was harley thinking with the 3 sporster models the only one that makes the most sense is the sporster custom model with the bigger 17L fuel tank and forward controls happy days.
Ps hate the look of the front end of the iron hate the rubber boots on the forks and the headlight cowling shroud thing makes all harleys look stupid in my opinion.😂
48 ALL DAY!!! custom stage 1 and mini ape bars....
What is with HD personnel talking up the peanut tank lmao. Yall, we want the BIG tanks. Not peanut tanks. Idc how good that peanut tank looks to you, I want the 3.3 atleast. The bigger the tank, the beefier the sporty looks, which would look amazing on the 48. However, just because the 48 lacks the bigger tank and the mini apes, those are the reasons I will choose the 1200 over it.
48!
48 I have one
2020 48
48
I like 48
I own 1200 iron
a 3.3L tank would look just as good, if not better, on the 48. The only reason it has a peanut tank is because H-D is a genius in marketing and knows how to make it competitive. A 48 with a big tank would just eliminate the 1200 out of the line up.
48 all day long

I like the 48
I like the color of the tank and it’s looks
