    It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive UA-cam experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong...
    This time, for no apparent reason, I become Mr Ian Seabrook from the HubNut channel we test a 2007 Citroen Xsara Picasso 1.6 HDi Desire, and deal with a forbidden fuel engine (again), terrible lighting, rip off quotes, a wobbly camera mount, the good old DLD-416/DV6 engine and generally little of any consequence at all. Nothing untoward, then...
    As an independent vehicle consultant, I take potential buyers through the whole car buying process from choosing a make and model to a vehicle handover and road tax. In addition to information on this service, I also have a selection of written and video reviews of cars that I have owned, hired, borrowed or have somehow come into my possession. Please use the Contact Me page on my website to get in touch, visit my Facebook page for latest updates and share this video if you like it! Thank you for watching.

    I had a 1.6 hdi. It was fast enough and very frugal, returning 55mpg. This engine is reliable if you follow the oil change schedule and use the correct oil. Also check the injector bolts at each service as leaks around the injectors can ruin the engine if left unattended. Cam belt change at 100k or 10 years. Do this and the engine can pass 200k no problem. They don't rust, except around the front sills sometimes. Comfortable and massively spacious and versatile. My old 55 exclusive is still going with 150k and all the extras are working fine. If you don't care about image, this car will get you where you need to be for next to nothing, and you will love it for doing so.

      We don't normally talk about diesels on this channel at all, I just happened to think I was Ian Seabrook from the HubNut channel on the day of filming (my fit of madness has now ended). He really likes these, and they are available for hardly any money these days.

    There was a time not so long ago when these things were like rats and Man Utd fans - i.e you were never more than twenty feet away from one. I guess they must have been very cheap to buy because although they are undoubtedly pleasingly practical family friendly vehicles they not very pleasing to the eye I think. Also that centre rear seat belt hanging down from the roof looks quite bizarre.
    There will come a time I predict when so many people will look back and remember their parents having one of these when they were children the Picasso will gain a certain nostalgic interest.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  3 роки тому

      Yes, you are absolutely right! You just have to look at how expensive cars like Escorts, Cortinas and BXs are starting to become in order to see just how much nostalgia there currently is for older family cars which were ignored for years.
      These definitely used to be a lot more common than they are now, the massive discounts when new probably meant that they depreciated quite badly, and now most are firmly in No Budget Reviews territory...

    I'm currently on my second Picasso for use as my daily shed/commuter car. It may be ugly as sin and slow as molasses but it's probably the most comfortable car I've ever sat in and it's certainly the most practical.
    I've taken all 3 rear seats out of mine which improves fuel economy a touch as they weigh a ton and I never use them. It also means that I have a comparable load space now as a lot of small vans which is handy considering I'm a tradesman.
    The visibility in it is also fantastic, it's like driving around in a mobile greenhouse as there's loads of glass and quarterlights everywhere, unlike modern cars with massive pillars that feel enclosed and cramped... Its also not that bad to drive, even mine with crap budget tyres doesn't feel like a boat in corners and it's mid range acceleration isn't bad to say its a 1.6 petrol.
    As long as you don't mind being judged by people in rented 4 pot euro boxes driving one I'd seriously consider getting one while they're still cheap! Good review btw.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 роки тому

      Thank you, yes, they are very cheap these days and have a lot of practicality. You are right about the visibility and load space. I found the handling a little wayward, but it is hard surprising given the copious body roll and the tall profile of the car. I would have preferred one of the petrols to test, but they seem to be quite rare.

    I can't beginning to think how many of these I sold back 20 years ago. Massively practical and tough things if they were looked after. General wear and tear and old age is seeing most of them off these days. They are not a sports car and don't drive like one - but they were great family cars for the private buyer.

I'm still driving it with the original clutch, exhaust, fuel and water pumps, alternator etc etc. Insurance is £250. A friend of mine had one of these. Very roomy and comfortable. Used by her friends and family (and me) as a taxi to Heathrow.
    It was the 1.6 petrol and did sound a bit busy at motorway speeds. Lack of rev counter was annoying but it sounded like it was around 4000ish.
    She kept it for 8 years and swapped it for a a C4 Picasso.
    It has the dubious reputation as being rejected by Hubnut. As the one Ian tested was too bad to buy….. so he bought a City Rover. 🙂

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  3 роки тому +1

      Ah yes, Mr Seabrook rejected a very knackered old one of these in favour of the City Rover. Didn't mean he doesn't like them, though...
      The 1.6 petrol certainly would be quite underpowered, the 1.8, 2.0 or the forbidden fuel ones tended to be favoured for heavier loads back in the day. I don't know why they cheapened out on the rev counter for lower end models.

    I do remember when Sir HubNut looked at a certain worn out Picasso and went onto something else (what it was I do not remember!)
    I'm always amazed at the vehicles in your market, how exceptional they are on top of being extremely versatile!
    They exterior looks aerodynamic, the interior extremely practical, and good fuel economy from that forbidden fuel engine!
    I did not mind the forward "distractions" (if you could call them that) but that center shoulder belt would drive me to distraction, the only negative I can find fault with this exceptional example!
    Goodness, recent advertising on local television where I am located are asking 25% MORE for your used vehicle! So if you can get this particular Citroën for under £1,000 in such excellent condition I would have purchased it as well!

    The Xsara Picasso was very popular. My Sister has 3 children and a dog so she had a Black 2001 2.0 litre HDI and now she has a Gold 2008 1.6 HDI. Both of them were very reliable and practical. Personally, I prefer the 1997 to 2002 Renault Megane Scenic. I know that the Picasso has much more space but the Megane Scenic is a far more engaging drive. I found the Picasso to have too much roll.
    I would prefer the Xsara Picasso to the Ford S Max which tries to be sporty, yet forgets that it is almost the size of a Ford Galaxy.
    How did you find visibility?
    Possibly you could compare the 1.6 HDI to a petrol version if you ever get offered one. I really enjoyed this because of the family connection. I have driven a 1991 Citroën BX 1.7 TGD in the early 90s and I found it very comfortable, well designed and economical. A shame that the steering was very heavy when parking. I believe that the 1.9 diesels came with power steering. Really looking forward to the BX. Unbelievable stopping power.

      Ah DV6. I was wondering why they'd given the engine the same name as a Messerschmitt Bf109 engine for a minute. Thank you Mr Lloyd.
