I go back and watch my old Tuba Skinny videos occasionally and the band still amazes me. I have heard them perform multiple dozens of times over the past 10 years and they still bring a smile to my face when I hear something like this. Absolutely, without a doubt, I will accept no argument, they are the best traditional jazz band in the world.
Wow! Great bass inclusion. Tuba out for a while? Glad Greg is singing. Miss Erica. You guys do it right every time. Keep up the sound, the tradition, and the musical partnerships.
I saw another video of this set before. Same place, same day. Filmed by Paul Gibby. Barnabus passed the tip bucket. It is written in the description. There are a video with Barnabus too.
I like the bass fiddle added to the group. Eye nice rendition of Frankie&Johnnie. I love your music and wish I lived in NO so I could listen in person.
Many thanks for filming this, James. In previous videos of them playing this piece (e.g. ua-cam.com/video/tsr8KHAzSfk/v-deo.html ), the title was given as 'Leaving Home' (not 'Frankie and Johnny'). I wonder whether 'Leaving Home' is the correct title when - as here - it contains TWO themes? It's a relatively easy piece - with the main theme being a 12-bar in B flat - but as ever they fill it with variety and creativity. Also good to see the range of Shaye signals (e.g. finger down for switch to the 16-bar second theme at 00:38, cornet up signalling she would take the break at 00:46, the 'mouth' signal telling Greg to sing at 00:59 and again at 02:18 and 03:37). Also interesting that, unlike most singers of 'Frankie and Johnny', Greg sings that second theme as well as the familiar 12-bar theme (he does so at 01:30 and again at 02:50 and at 04:09).
This is certainly not the classic Frankie and Johnny (originally Frankie and Albert, cf. the Lomaxes' book of American traditional songs), and I think, yes, it should be Leaving Home, although a lot of the verses are from the classic song - but the whole 'going away' theme is not.
Thanks, Oliver. I don't know the Lomax book. But I recall back in the 1960s hearing bands in England playing 'Frankie and Johnny' simply as a 12-bar blues. I knew nothing about the 16-bar second theme (starting, if I'm not mistaken, on the E flat chord) until I heard Tuba Skinny playing 'Leaving Home' in videos put up on UA-cam by Chris Davis and RaoulDuke504 about a year ago.
The melody and most of the verses are pulled directly from "Frankie and Johnny" but the tempo is faster than most versions of "Frankie and Johnny'." The band did not announce the title before playing so I used the title of song that the lyrics matched. It is not unusual in the history of early blues for different musicians to "borrow" a song from someone else and record it under another title with a few lines altered. I suspect that whoever first recorded it under the title "Leaving Home" did just that.
Great rendition! I fell in love with this song after listening to Kelli Smith sing it when I was a young guy in elementary school. I think that Barney and Fred were at my house for a play day on that afternoon. Thanks for sharing this video.

Many thanks James for filming and sharing here. I am very impressed about the sound. Although no trombone and sousaphone Tuba Skinny sounds excellent. More chamber music, but they have dtill their unique sound that makes them so special. Greg is fantastic. I know the tune before. I am not sure, but it sounds like "Leaving Home". Who is the banjo player? Best wishes to you Dave from Berlin Germany.

Great version by the crew and Greg sports a stylish Stetson! Thanks for sharing James! Who was the banjo player? At first I thought it was Max until I saw him playing base.
I talked to him between sets and he asked me not to give his name. Oh well. He has been in New Orleans for over 25 years and has his own band. He has played with Tuba Skinny before.
Hi, James. I hope you can start putting dates in the clip titles. UA-cam seems to have stopped putting dates in list views for "songs", so it's not so easy now to see at a glance what's new to watch Thanks!
Bruce, I include the title, date, and place in the first seven seconds of every video as an overlaid caption, including this video. I also include the date and place in the text description of every video. As far as the UA-cam thumbnail, on any channel I subscribe to any new video from that channel shows a tag listing how many days/weeks/months ago it was first posted in the thumbnail. My videos should show the same for subscribers.
@@JamesSterling Thanks! Yeah, the issue is in list views, both in browser and Roku views. I could send you some screen shot if you're interested. Maybe to your Yahoo address?
@@bkenglandUTube all I can think of is that there is some setting on your Roku or computer that blocks the information on when the video is posted. Beats me as to why.

Great job by Max on the bass.
Shaye, it is so good to see you smile and be happy.
I really love it when they play this.
Great to hear the bass also.
Thanks James
I do like the singer for his intonation! So rythmic.

Todd had another gig, a wedding party.
Top Shelf, Tuba Skinny. TOP SHELF! Thanks. Always sweet. Y'all really make me miss my home.
Watched this twice before I noticed - NO TROMBONE! The rest of the guys still belt out a solid sound!

@@PopsCoffee yes, I guess she is pointing down because they are going one step anticlockwise on the circle of fifths from B flat to E flat.

I’ve never seen them at The Maison! How cool to see them so intimately 🎷⚜️🌷
Dig around my channel. I've recorded them at The Maison many times over the years,
@@JamesSterling thank you. What a treat.
5 STARS! *****
🔴 Great ... This is the first time I've seen a double bass in your orchestra. Congratulations ❗🙏🏼 👍🏻
Todd was absent, he had another gig, so Max substituted on bass. He is an excellent bass player, heck, he is excellent on anything he plays.
Switching to the string bass, is a nice surprise. The tuba is great also, bur this was nice, and it fit very well!

Looks like Jason is permanently out of the band now. I enjoyed his banjo playing.
I don't expect to see him back. He has a full time job as a carpenter.
Where is Erika ?
Pourquoi si vite ?
( comparée à Armstrong, ma référence ) ?

Where is Erica.?
