    A VERY interesting arrangement for this iconic piece! Whether or not I loved all the artistic choices here, I thoroughly enjoyed analyzing :] what's next for me to analyze by VoicePlay?

      I think this is Eli’s first outing as the primary arranger, which made me happy. I actually loved this arrangement, but I’m not fond of the song itself. Lyrics that say “I’m a loser” or “I want to die”-I don’t need that in my head. I’m fine with sad songs but I can do without “I’m suicidally depressed” songs. LOL.

    I was absolutely the intended audience for "Creep" when it came out, just barely 18 and full of imposter syndrome and self-doubt. It's hard to properly emphasize how powerful it was to hear the airwaves absolutely flooded with this; people didn't really talk about such things as openly in 1992 and it carried a lot more stigma to admit to it.
    I can see someone who's a fan of the song from a purely musical perspective finding this version too different, but as far as the impact? VoicePlay dug in until they found what made it so powerful thirty years ago and amplified it, playing the incredibly intimate, vulnerable solos off against the group coming together so flawlessly for that climactic stage scene. Everyone is alone together. It's a perfect distillation of the way the original was somehow a tonic against isolation by admitting those feelings to the world at large. I can't fault anyone for preferring the original, but emotionally, this one-ups the original in exactly the right ways.

    • @maudglazbrooke1287
      @maudglazbrooke1287 10 місяців тому +4

      emotionally it's where this version lost me and I can put my finger on why, it's hits a subtly different emotional cord. Maybe it's just that it is multiple voices and it's not the sort of emotional journey one normally does as a group effort. *shrug*

    This is one of my favorite VoicePlay covers. It's so beautiful. I love featuring Cesar's warm, intimate voice at the beginning and end. I like the way the kind of broken, staccato bits feel a bit disassociated--which suits the song.

    I'm not a huge fan of the original song--I just missed it when I was the right age for it--but I actually really liked this version. Without particular attachment to the song itself, this isn't a VP song I'd choose to listen to just because, but I have a lot of appreciation for the vocals here, and the intricacies of this arrangement. Love Geoff's relaxed bass, Anthony's beautiful open belt and those runs, and Eli's ever-epic wail. I hadn't noticed the differences in the sound of Layne's perc throughout the song, but now I can't not hear it.
    I always appreciate your ability to critique in a value-neutral way, and acknowledge the merits and the skills involved, even if the piece isn't your favorite! And congrats on the new equipment. I'm not as tuned in to picture quality, but the difference in sound stands out!

    This one actually is arranged by Eli, maybe that's the reason it sounded.. a bit different becasue he doesn't do a lot of arranging for VP. I don't like the original song that much to be honest, and I think this was a pretty good and emotional rendition of it. Everyone did a wonderful job with the vocals, for me Eli and Cesar's deliveries stood out the most, very heartfelt❤️‍🩹

      Same, in regards to the original vs. this cover. In general, I think maybe anyone's enjoyment of the more 'experimental' covers will be inversely proportional to their enjoyment of the original. I actually really like the use of jagged, broken, text in the BV's. To me, it was evocative of the broken jumble of thoughts going through our heads when we're feeling down on ourselves. especially when they preceded the solo line -- like the internal energy provoking the narrator to sing. So it fits the theme of looking at yourself in the mirror.

    • @Filiz_E
      @Filiz_E 10 місяців тому +5

      I agree, I usually don't like covers because they usually are cheap copies of the originals but VP is on another level! They did covers of songs like Nothing Else Matters or Dream On or Seven Nation Army which I like the originals a ton, but somehow they manage to make it their own, and I love! I also agree on this one about the BVs that they somehow represent our inner feelings, that from time to time we are even afraid to admit to ourselves. Which I think is one of the most important things they are trying to convey, and did a brilliant job at it!

    This was so emotionally stirring, absolutely brilliant! You have not reacted to Voiceplay's cover of Eleanor Rigby. It was also arranged by Eli, done at a very sad point for them. Earl had just left abruptly, so Eli ended up singing both tenor lines. It is wonderful, trust me!

    I felt like this arrangement and video strongly conveyed the feeling of being alone and the center of attention at the same time- Fake it well while feeling every second like you're never gonna make it. Original and most versions make me feel like wallflowering, watching the action and not being part of it. Peter's makes me feel like screaming to the sky after skipping out of my own party. This one feels like the voice on the inside is eating me while I'm being celebrated.
    Really loved the analysis; The 'underproduced' note really helped add to the level of listening I was doing.

    They took the emotion of the original lyrics and made it the focus. The mirrors for introspection and self critique and the emotion in the acting. It all plays more to the self doubt and inability to see one’s worth that the original hinted at. Personally not a fan of Radiohead at all but I can listen to this.

    I wonder whether you think the raw, less processed stuff you mentioned actually adds to the feeling of raw emotion we get in this version. Not something I have any experience noting. I can tell it ‘feels’ more stripped down and ‘true’, but I thought it was because of the emotions they displayed (and their purposeful voice cracks). Hearing your input about the production makes me wonder if that played a part as well.

    WDYM switching up? I'm pretty sure the original song utilizes Cm in every verse. Not only that, the leading voice forces a Bb note on top of it, which is a minor 3rd in a major key, creating this gut-wrenching punch in harmony. This arrangement might not be 100% respectful of the original with some harmonic details, but it's pretty up there as far as great covers go. Not even mentioning the acting from everyone, shit hits you deep in the feels even if you don't relate that much

      I think Peter looks a little pale and thinnish and his voice also feels thinner. I attributed this to the new cam and mic, but maybe you're on to something too. Peter, you OK buddy?

    I never really loved the original of this song. I mean I really like it musically, but to me it always felt kinda whiny and "oh have sympathy for me, I can't get the girl" instead the heartfelt deep message of someone struggling with self-doubt that it's supposed to be. In my opinion Voiceplay really put that message at the forefront (and made me cry which is a first for this song) making me actually like this version better than the original.

    Geoff also did a G1 growl during the build-up to the final “RUN”.

    Eli’s voice is perfect in this one. Not really a huge fan of Anthony. Do not like that type of singing just a personal preference. Also Eli arranged this. Love love love this. Gotta give Eli a break. His first time arranging. I don’t like the song personally and never have in any version. But I agree not my fave from them either. Still love it though

    If this is first reaction? How can you even react to the full song with how much you pause. I love the intricacies you go over, but lets listen to a lot of the song first and then do a relisten with all your notes or like stop half way go through it and then go over first half and then do second half.. Its a little too much stopping and we are missing a lot of the emotion. Keep doing what you are doing overall as I love the little details you talk about but wish more was heard before you went into these details

    At the age of 12. THE HOLLIES released a new song, written for them...."The Air That I Breath". Very sentimental & a very popular group. My brother bought 7" vinyl and played this relentlessly. 1992 same tune, same writer, a modern uptake arranged with lyrics to suit Era.
    VP are covering the softer 1972 version but the music doesn't seem to fit with the lyrics. Eli gives it the grit it needs while Ceasar mostly & Anthony sing singing higher keep the subdued harmony line afloat with Geoff's bass fitting in. I find he has a beautiful base and the growl lows & subs are taken too unnecessarily. When singing Active genre Vallhahalla it is perfectly suited. Overall it is likeable but not among their best. Great hits cannot be achieved constantly and it is good they have tried something so diverse for themselves.
    Thank you Peter, the sound system is very clear. Worth the outlay ❤

    Not their best work, for sure. Definitely don't care for this version at all. Something's just "off" in it. But, as always, the "music" is stunning - I'm still gobsmacked that human beings can make such beautiful sounds without any instruments. It sure ain't my granddaddy's barbershop quartet-type a cappella music.

      @@marshayoung9387 As with any other performance, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". I felt it was "off" and it's not a performance I like. No artist can please everyone 100% of the time. There will always be those who like something and those who don't. VoicePlay pleases far more often than not.

      Horrible comment. No accounting for your lousy taste in music. Another "kiss up" commentor trying to impress Peter, who is just is deluded with his opinion as you are. You're definitely not a Voiceplay fan, and if you say you are, you're LYING!!!!!!!!!!
