Nice video, great research but.... Prasoulas "Sun Knight" always was and still is a neo-fascist. He never hid his politics and was always proud to act as the "führer" of a "conservative, neo-romantic" and ultimately fascist heavy metal movement. He is the one who through his articles in the Greek Metal Hammer magazine came up, not only with the "epic" label, but with the idea that heavy metal is music for the white youth and perpetually at war with thrash metal and punk and whatever crossed his narcissistic mind as decadent, sickly, red music made by inferior cultures. This whole narrative was relatively popular in pre-internet Greece, which was, in the 80s, effectively still part of "third world" in terms of keeping up with latest trends and information. Prasoulas is proud of his role and you can find these articles in his own blog. For many years, all through the 90s and 00s Prasoulas was seen as a joke, as the scene started to grow and the audience got easy access to information. Being a known neo-nazi didn't help either. But in recent years there has been some interest in Prasoulas as an influential figure, mainly due to Bill Tsamis constant mentioning of how Warlord owe a lot to mr. sun knight. Tsamis was an extremely gifted and troubled man but he was also a Christian conservative, in the American (US) sense, and, apparently, saw no problems with hanging out and giving scene cred to a known neo-fascist even after it was pointed out to him on several occasions. Now, that is something that weighs on him. But Prasoulas, who is still active in the scene by his own zine, and also by proxy through a younger "führer" that leads a "literary fantasy club", doesn't need any mention in any history of the Greek scene outside this context. Fuck this guy. His positive contribution in history is so small and exaggerated [US power and epic metal was available in Greek record shops and was regularly reviewed while prasoulas only added the us (true) vs them darkies/commies/degenerates (false) narrative] and the negative effects of his fascist rhetoric are still felt. Hi Sarah, great episode!! If you haven't done so already, check out Solitary Sabred from Cyprus--not mainland Greece exactly, but very much in the same spirit and with similar cultural and historical underpinnings. Killer epic power metal. Their vocalist Petros is a UA-cam/internet friend of mine, and I was sincerely honored to receive a shout out in the liner notes on their 'Redemption Through Force' album in 2014.
Hey Sarah! I hate to admit that a lot of stuff here doesn’t do it for me, but Blood Covered is freaking sweet! Thanks for exposing me to some new sounds. Cheers.
That was great. Describing the Greek lore and culture as dark was very spot on. I was delighted to see War Dance mentioned. That album is one of my favourites from the last decade. Its the closest I can think to the old Manowar epics. Finally, I would highly suggest to everyone here who wants something really grand and unique and obscure, to listen to Sarissa's self titled album that was released in 1994. Not as loud as their famous demo but extremely epic. Heavily influenced by Greek music and myths and epic movie scores, it is a grand and dark epic tour de force.
I feel like Northwind was worth a mention, not only were they the first Greek band to put out an album, even being signed to Polydor iirc, their album Mythology also was one of the earliest Epic Metal albums from Greece all the way back in 87, hell their comeback from last year was even pretty good.

An excellent video, thank you! Wrathblade in particular sounds amazing, I'm looking forward to listen to those two records. I would also like to give a shout out to Warrior Path's sophomore record from this year, The Mad King. With no other than Daniel Heiman, it's epic as hell! Also, more on the Power Metal side, but also wonderful is Sacred Outcry's Damned For All Time from last year. It follows the apparently hollowed hellenic tradition of struggling for years before putting out a debut album but it was worth the wait.

Greece has one of the best metal scenes in the world. You can find hidden gems in every genre, from brutal death/black and thrash, to epic stoner and folk. Despite the fact that you see veteran bands like Septic Flesh, Rotting Christ or Suicidal Angels getting big label deals and recognition they deserve (mostly because they have worked their assess of all these years), most bands have to face the self destructive character of the scene itself. Bands and press constantly talking shit for each other, backstabbing each other, instead of supporting the scene for the greater good and promoters constantly trying to double deal local bands or even bands from abroad coming for gigs. Greek scene deserves a lot more and this shit has to stop.

Production quality for Greek bands, was a problem, especially from the ‘80’s (where the Greek Metal scene had its dawn) until at least the mid to late ‘90s. Most bands were from working people suburbs and towns, with very limited budget and limited to non existent knowledge about modern recording techniques and production. They recorded at home or at small studios, where the equipment left a lot to be desired and recording engineers with literally no experience of recording and producing heavy rock/heavy metal music. The good, professional studios were VERY expensive and booked by popular artists and opportunities for metal bands to be listened to radio or tv were almost completely absent, thus the Greek metal scene, the including epic power metal bands, remained very underground. The language barrier was also a BIG issue, along with the geographical isolation of the country from the rest of Europe, especially Central / Europe that was the epicenter of the European metal scene. All those reasons were also reasons why the Greek black metal scene developed such a distinct character and also the Greek black metal experienced the breakout popularity of Rotting Christ, that essentially put the Greek metal bands on the European and global map. Some bands were outstanding for their time and thankfully there are still outstanding bands around like Wardrum that push the Greek power metal scene forward.
