    I definitely want to see this chip turned into an Android car stereo, with the right screen and the right amplifier. I know it may sound overkill, but when you're using the maps app, spotify, car park cameras and other stuff, many "cheap" devices may let you down, crash apps, get slow... I would love to build one myself, but there are few singleboards that run android natively.

    I would love to see something like this but with more ports (like 2.5g eth, pcie 4x slot, etc, all of these are supported by that chip).
    Video drivers are kind of a big thing here, currently we don't have great drivers that really take advantage of that gpu. It took a long time for the RK3399 to get proper open source drivers working, this is going to take quite some time as well IMO. Maybe next year we get improvements and better boards with more I/O

    The current issue with all RK3588s based boards is that they’re limited to using the Android aimed branched kernel that RockChip maintain that is (as far as I know) way behind mainline. This limits support for things like Vulkan and less optimised OpenGL support. Luckily it seems mainline is having support added, which will open the door for way better distributions.

    • @MrSlowestD16
      @MrSlowestD16 2 роки тому

      Can't be too far behind if it's running 22.04. You can't use an ancient kernel with the latest & greatest Ubuntu packages/libraries/etc., because eventually you'll run into issues, like some library uses some feature that doesn't exist in such an old kernel.
      EDIT:
      As for OGL and Vulkan. As long as the drivers are up to date an older kernel shouldn't matter. I'm guessing RockChip writes the driver. Really depends when they're updated for the performance of those things. If the driver is just as old as the kernel then yeah, might get annoying that you're behind. But if the driver is pretty modern, just on an old kernel? Still sounds like a good deal.

    • @Durandle
      @Durandle 2 роки тому +1

      @@MrSlowestD16 They have, AFAIK, merged updates and patches, so it's technically not that far behind, but means it's also not entirely "up to date", and being closed source means it's a gamble as to what may or may not be there and work. Its annoying, I wish they'd just push their stuff to mainline, but seems there's a dedicated group of people doing it for them so it'll get there.

    Thank God they are starting to put proper installers on these things. The whole weird iso image processes that for some weird reason has become the standard is such a pain.

      Once upon a time, everyone gave you disks, and on these discs were the installers of your operating systems. But then one day we all decided those discs were too big, took up too much space and were too slow, and it was cumbersome to buy more expensive disks, and burn them all the time. So we turned to USB and flash, But we needed something to be compatible with both, ISOs are the result.

    I'd love to see a full emulation video on Ubuntu for this. I hate Android for emu boxes because there's inevitably going to be some config tweaks required and it's just a lot easier to crack open a terminal and have full filesystem access and no ro partitions or sandboxing or anything of that nature. The tweaking is a lot easier on a normal Linux desktop, IMO. But generally out-of-the-box Android performance is better, so there's that... But that PS2 perf is quite nice.
    Curious how something like this would stack up against the Jetson Nano - you have one of those, don't you? The Jetson Nano isn't well supported anymore since the next revision is coming out next year.

      I'd plug a basic NVMe drive into the fastest USB port for OS and storage. I wonder how long that could be run off a battery bank? If they fitted an M2 slot, even the little size one, this thing would be brilliant. I could put one inside a keyboard and make my own 1980s style micro-computer, one that can become every 1980s micro-computer I want it to be.

    You're probably stuck in Balanced Power Mode rather than Performance Power Mode. Had the same issue with Ubuntu I installed on an Asus cn60 Chromebox. Dropped frames at 1080p playback until after I made the change. Had to go command line to change it as the gui didn't offer me performance power mode.

    This seems great from a 'techie' standpoint, but I don't really understand the market they expect to target this at. As some noted, if you need a small form-factor desktop, you can get much more powerful x86-based systems with better integrated graphics for the same price. It's also going to provide a lot more versatility and better support than an ARM-based platform. Maybe this will be more efficient; but if it's about saving pennies, there isn't really a value proposition there. Very few people really wanting a true ARM-based SBC desktop replacement, when they realize they also need to make a lot of sacrifices to do it. If I were to buy this, it's because I had cash burning a hole in my pocket and just wanted to play around with it. There are better small form-factor, low power options with greater performance, versatility, and support than this for the price. I bought a Pi4 because it was reasonably inexpensive and is a lot of fun to play with for the price. This, I just can't see myself buying. ARM, even a powerful one with lots of memory, really needs to be at a discount to X86 based options to really be considered for desktop use cases. This isn't. Even for media playback including transcoding, x86 is still likely to be a better option.

    cool, but what's the use case at this price point? for the 300 bucks they're asking, any used hardware will deliver a better performance, if only at a bigger form factor. if this was a sub 100 USD computer, it would be very interesting.

    Does anybody know if the 8GB model sacrifices any bandwidth? Is the difference 2x4GB vs 2x8GB or 1x8GB vs 2x8GB? I'd love to use one of these for that GPU and NPU combo, but memory bandwidth is a concern if it's single channel. I don't need more than 8GB, but if the bandwidth isn't there, it won't handle it well regardless.

      Was asking myself the same question. I've tried a few (chinese) android boxes, and none come close to my nvidia shield. The large pro for the shield is that they keep supporting it and optimising it. Whereas these android boxes usually just get pieced toghether and come as is... even though on paper they should give similar or even better performance, none of them actually deliver..
