  • Ustad Faiyaz Khan and Heiko Dijker - Guru-Sishya Tabla duet in Rotterdam, Violin accompaniment by Lenneke van Staalen. www.indianmusiccircle.com
Grand master Faiyaz Khan playing a beautifull Peshkar with his disciple Heiko Dijker. In terms of Nikas, soundproduction, note the sweetness, clarity and balance of Ustad Faiyaz Khan.
Ustad Faiyaz Khan was born in Sikar, Rajastan, into a family of musicians. His father Nazir Khan was a court musician at the court of the Maharaja of Karoli. At a young age Faiyaz Khan was put under the tutelage of the master Ustad Hidayat Khan, who shaped his sound-production and musicality strongly. Faiyaz Khan also had the privilage to learn with the late Ustad Inam Ali Khan, the former Khalifa(head) of the Delhi tradition of Tabla, and in addition to this rich North Indian training, he also took lessons from the South-Indian percussion master Ramnath Ishwaran, who taught him the mathematics of the South.
When he joined All India Radio in 1955, he had already completed his first tour abroad. In 1958 he moved to Delhi to be able to accompany all the great masters at the radio station.
Faiyaz Khan is one of the rare Tabla players who have had a chance to play and tour the whole world with masters of different eras in the classical Indian Music scene. He has toured extensively with the Sarod maestro Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Sitar maestro Nikhil Bannerjee, Bansuri legend Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, vocal legend ustad Amir Khan, and many of the old and new generations of musicians.
His effortless control of the extreme slow Talas (rhythmic cycles) as well as his deep understanding of the Khyal tradition make him one of the most demanded accompanists. Faiyaz Khans playing is marked by great rhythmic perfection and clarity and he combines a traditional style of performance with a good sense of humour. His obvious joy and enthousiasm while playing in concert are quite infectious to the audience.

Ustad Faiyaz Khan lives in Delhi. Everybody knows him there, and all over India. He has been performing all over the world since the 50's, and is very well known for his amazing accompaniment.

Wah wah ustadji. The perfect sound of your tabla along with the nagma had me in tears. You take small things to such a level where everybody thinks "Wah kya baat hai". One of the last of great Ustads of Delhi gharana.

studied indian music in the early 80s and the techniques they used still apply today. ta tiki ta ta...
i like the extra low tones they get -- this recording captures the nuance of the different parts of the drum head as they are struck. it's also nice to see young players as well.

No, I was a poor student with no money, just a Sarode and a small bag. But Ustadji was extremely good back then, very highly regarded.
