One of my favorite UA-cam videos. Indescribably wonderful to hear so many intimate details about Utd Thirakwa Khan saheb. Also great that Pt Nayan ji imbibed so much from him.

Pt. Nayan Ghosh said @ 12.11 that his father had no clear idea on Benaras and Punjab Gharana. And @ 4.15 when he named best tabla maestros who were contemporaries of his father Pt. Nikhil Ghosh, he unconsciously selected 5 out of 9 maestros, who belonged to those two lesser-known gharanas!!! Benaras and Punjab Baaj are relatively new and based on power and they can dominate any other gharana any day. Ustad Ahmedjan Thirkawa is the Mount Everest of tabla. But the other maestros are not grass eater by the way.

I have watched this video so many times and still feel warm and fuzzy feelings from listening to these stories!
However ... I would like to mention one thing. I believe that the assertion that Thirakwa-saheb had “not taught anyone” may be taken with a grain of salt. He seems to have had a number of disciples in both Bombay as well as Lucknow. These include Bapu Patwardhan, Narayan Joshi, Prem Vallabh, Sudhir Verma and others. It may be that he had a reputation as a very strict and demanding teacher who did not have much patience with students, most students did not last long, hence he may have developed a reputation as not having taught many students. But I do not think it is completely true that he did not teach anyone.
The below video may be of interest where Prof Sudhir Verma has shared his memories of Thirakwa-saheb and has touched on some of these points:
