how dry was your brush when u dry brushed the white? because if your brush is too dry it will end up like this, u need a little bit of moisture in the brush
Hi! So far... the drybrush underpaint is looking better than any of my underpainting ( zenithal ) with an airbrush. Airbrush underpainting is faster for batch painting, but does not yield good contrast as much as the dry brushing. ☺️🎨🎨🎨

New to painting and currently using a wet pallette. Would you still use glaze medium on a wet pallette? Your under psinting you do, Is that on top of an initial priming or instead of?
Very well thought out approach. I love mediums. My medium I use for armour hading is a little dawn soap. have been at this for 42 years and the gloss white technique you mention was an ah ha moment. Tell your kid well done from me and my Daughter!
The videos look more professional. Really like the little slide with the title/chapter so you get a clear separation of each technique that you show and explain. You and Marco is at the moment my favorite painters for inspiration and learning :) Do you have a trick to smooth out brushed layers on big flat surfaces with little details? Especially if you painted with your glayering? Noticed that the layers easily stand out in those situations.
One suggestion, to avoid the chalky look of drybrushing, is to only do downward strokes of the brush for the underpainting. This way, the drybrush acts like rays of light going in one general direction. When the brush strokes go up and down, it creates a more rocky or dusty look. Great video! Cheers!
Hey! I think downward strokes when doing they grey underpainting. You can even get a smoother result when you use those very soft makeup brushes (do not ask me what it is called, blending brushes?) - they help somewhat avoiding the chalky/dusty look if you want to. Not quite an airbrush but with some practice you can get quite close.
I really struggle with glazing, especially the transition line between layers. It always looks chalky or textured. I’ve noticed that especially with Army Painter Fanatic paints 😢.
No bro... but, I am an official Vallejo painter. But this is my personal channel. I am not paid by Vallejo to showcase or place specific paints here. IF I recommend a paint, that is because I really recommend the paint. Cheers.
I really enjoy that kind of video Don! I'm starting to use glaze for paint my miniature cause of you. I have a question: I see a lot of video where you use thinner medium and a lot of video using Glaze medium. I'm a noob painter so, when use glaze medium and when use thinner medium?
Thanks! Hope you are enjoying painting with mediums? Main difference between Glaze medium is transparency. Glaze medium is a bit more transparent. Also I like the consistency or viscocity of thinner medium a lot. I honestly prefer my thinner medium. But they are all great. Just subtle nuances or differences. It boils down to personal preference I think. ☺️
@@DonSuratos yes, I'm enjoy it alot thanks of your video! So if I use glaze technique I should use glaze medium, otherwise I'll go for thinner medium. Is that right?
Flow improver is basically a thinned down Retarder Medium. It will work, but consistency of the paint is not the same and it will not add transparency. However, flow improver, is also better than just water. Flow improver dissolves the paint better and will also soften the paints a little. Cheers! ☺️🎨🎨🎨
As you said at the end of the video, a practical video on this technique. Very interesting and intriguing…. I’m working on a diorama base representing the moon surface made of a base where I applied sand texture paint, followed by real stones and pebbles. All then primed with matt black and then.I’m drybrushing it with different shades of grey. Any suggestions/tips on completing it? I do not think washes will be needed, though. What do you think? Thanks a lot!
@@DonSuratos, yes pigments are really great and I don’t mind the mess…. I’ll upload a new video over the weekend with the new diorama and will credit you for the pigments idea! Thanks again a lot!
Don, I uploaded my latest gunpla diorama (ua-cam.com/video/EuUsAkj30a8/v-deo.html). I mention you in one of the photos and I put the link to your channel in the description. I hope you do not mind that I’ve done that.
I guess I'm struggling to see the difference here between thinning and layering and "glayering"? I thought glazing was a technique to create subtle chromatic shifts on top of a colour. Could you describe the difference between standard layering and "glayering" for me?
Basically you are doinglayering, but with semi transparent colors. Thus glazing whichyou are right sir, is laying down transparent paints to smoothen defined transitions from basic layering. Was it the video or my voice over that made it unclear? Thanks for watching.
thanks for the great idea of basecoating zenithals ,this part i have to replicate next time i pick up a brush..But my next step will be with GW contrast paints to see the result because it could be awesome or totally fail (on bigger flat surfaces?) and i am too curious to do not try it =)
Enjoying your videos Don. One thing I noticed is that you covered your dry brush pre highlights significantly especially with 3 layers. Have you tried dry brushing the pre highlights after doing a base color? For example using brown or purple under the yellow? This may save you time. Cheers!
Brown underpainting is perfect, but I am afraid I will drybrush over the other parts like the skin too. I did purple and red browns in my other videos. Cheers! ☺️🎨🎨🎨
Another great video, I just started painting and trying this glazing technique is great. 1 question. By the time you have glazed 3 layers the under painting does not seem to show through. Is that right?
Hi. Depends on the amount of glaze medium you add bro. If tou add less medium, the more opaque the paint, the less the underpainting will show through. However, since you did underpainting, painting ANY color is much more easier than painting over black primer directly. Also you kinda create volume the fastest way, with underpainting. ☺️🎨🎨🎨
@@DonSuratos thanks for the quick reply. I just wasn't sure if I was still supposed to see some of the under painting once I had glazed. Think I should thin a little more or use less layers.
@@mattdawson9980 Really depends bro. Since drybrushing is rough, you may want to apply more layers or less medium to eventually cover it up, and just use the values for volume. However, if you are glazing leather or rough armor, you may add more medium as you might want to show more of the rough underpainting. Was I clear? 😅
@@mattdawson9980 You are most welcome! I am not confident I explain things well, as english is not my native lanquage. Glad you find the videos helpful. ☺️🎨🎨🎨
If you want to lose that chalky texture when you are dry brushing it's actually surprisingly easy. Do everything like you normally would when dry brushing, but once you have wipe the majority of the pigment out of your brush dab it into a semi moist sponge, like a stippling motion to add back a small amount of moisture. Wipe it off once the dry it a little then go at the dry brushing. You get the same effect as if you were drybrushing with a gloss acrylic and can do it with any color paint.
Screenshot! I will test and give it a try. However, I do not clean on tissue anymore and using the glass palette gives me a semi moist dry brush already. ☺️
I tried using Winsor & Newton Glazing Medium, but the paint turns glossy. I tried diluting the glazing medium 50/50 with water, but still it is much too glossy. I will try again today with an even more dilute solution - maybe 90% water and 10% glaze medium.
No bro... "glaze" medium really tend to be glossy. Which I find helpful as I use it as a guide where to paint highlights. A quick thin coat of matte varnish will fix the gloss. ☺️
@@DonSuratos Thankyou Mr Suratos! 🙂 I will continue to practice with this method, and I am watching your new "How To Glaze Miniatures (Squig Skin) video now.
I do paint with different mediums very often. And every medium is different. My beloved Vallejo glaze medium wasn't avaible at my hobby store so I bought the one from AK. But this behaves totally different. At the moment I don't like it but I'm sure I will find a niche where it will be perfect for one job. Sometimes I switch between glaze, thinner, flow improver and retarder medium in one paint session. They all have a very different feel to them.
Agree except for the flow improver. The flow improver is just a thinned down ( with alcohol ) Retarder medium. Just use a watered down Retarder medium than flow improver. Although, flow improver is also better than just water. Cheers! ☺️🎨🎨🎨
lightning looks like spiderweb or water surface reflection, m´kay. 🕸⚡ looks like this ork is in bath of light.😎 Just got some of those magic mediums to play with. Glaze medium helps in keeping the paint pigments/particles in flat/thin layer and wet/runny which eezes the flow. water evaporates so extremely fast with acrylic paints. plastic is less porous than paper, even with primer.
Really love your video, looks great 👍🏻 and is really helpful. One of question where did you get your Red Grass painting/cutting mat (the white surface with the colour wheel in the top left corner)? I looked on their website but couldn’t find it (I love their wet palettes btw and will buy one 😁). If you can tell me where to get the white mat with the colour wheel I will certainly buy one of those as well 😁
I agree I lose all control of the pigment at a certain point of dilution with water, but I use flow improver instead of medium, it may contain some of the same agents IDK. It is challenging to do fine detail with a small brush that carries a small amount of thinned acrylic paint because as you said it cures so quickly and typically you do not want to carry a lot of paint and I usually wick some to a paper tower before application, I have come to prefer very opaque acrylic inks that withstand dilution a lot better for basing and washes but I really like using oil over acrylic because I can safely remove or add without effecting the acrylics without clearing the piece though I usually clear them anyway just to be cautious and I find them more controllable as a pin wash or filter. Personally, if I had done the zenithal as you did on this character I would have stopped after the first layer of yellow and left it translucent, I thought it looked superior then to cover the zenithal almost completely.
It was soooo frustrating for me, trying to glaze with water like watercolors last year bro. So I decided to go back to using mediums last month. Now, I will never go back to water with water, except for washes. ☺️
Don, a question that bothers me: Why all that zenital thing efforts? I have tried it many times, the result is always the same: couple layers of opaque paint render all lights and shadows the same look
I hope this video answers or shows why Zenithal can be beneficial for painting bro. Even opaque painting over zenithal, actually makes the opaque color more vibrant in most cases. ☺️ 👉🏽👉🏽👉🏽 ua-cam.com/video/_DlIJWWL-0Y/v-deo.html

Ahhh... it was just a Filipino play of word in this case. 😅
@@DonSuratos i was thinking that Vallejo finally understood my soul and made a product just for me
This is good.
ALSO GREEN IS DA BEZT U 'UMMIE!
Thanks for watching Anibal! ☺️🎨🎨🎨
Very well thought out approach. I love mediums. My medium I use for armour hading is a little dawn soap. have been at this for 42 years and the gloss white technique you mention was an ah ha moment. Tell your kid well done from me and my Daughter!
42 years! 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽 The White gloss worked actually. Credit to the commenter who suggested it bro. Not my idea. Thanks for watching th video! ☺️🎨🎨🎨
The videos look more professional. Really like the little slide with the title/chapter so you get a clear separation of each technique that you show and explain.
You and Marco is at the moment my favorite painters for inspiration and learning :)
Do you have a trick to smooth out brushed layers on big flat surfaces with little details? Especially if you painted with your glayering? Noticed that the layers easily stand out in those situations.
I try to improve the videos as best I can sir. Thank you for watching. Big surface, I will find a model that will be perfect as a demo. Thanks! ☺️🎨🎨🎨
Hi Don,
I see a lot of your videos use this recipe to do a lazy wash;
Vallejo Game Ink Colour (eg black)
Vallejo Glaze Medium
(Mystery ingredient)
Are you asking about the highlight sauce? 😊
@Don Suratos Maybe- it's the small bottle at 03:28 in this video?
One suggestion, to avoid the chalky look of drybrushing, is to only do downward strokes of the brush for the underpainting. This way, the drybrush acts like rays of light going in one general direction. When the brush strokes go up and down, it creates a more rocky or dusty look. Great video! Cheers!
Thank you! Will try. 😊🎨🎨🎨
Hang on, do you mean after you’ve primed the mini? Or when you ‘paint’ the black only do down strokes?
Do you use Stabilizer?
Is this a Vallejo product placement?
No bro... but, I am an official Vallejo painter.
What brushes do you use?
Almost always Kolinsky brushes sir. ☺️
Hey Don, can i use Flow Improver for this too? I have no Glaze Medium at the Moment. Greetings from Germany!
Flow improver is basically a thinned down Retarder Medium. It will work, but consistency of the paint is not the same and it will not add transparency. However, flow improver, is also better than just water. Flow improver dissolves the paint better and will also soften the paints a little. Cheers! ☺️🎨🎨🎨
@@DonSuratos Thank you very much for this Explanation! 🤝
@@Stendalerchen You are mos welcome sir.
Pigments my Geologist bro. The dusting of pigments will "glaze" soften your many grey color dry brushing. ☺️🎨🎨🎨
@@DonSuratos, thank you so much bro! Excellent tip. I have several Vallejo pigments that should do the trick! Thanks again!
@@natalebabbo-gunplaanddioramas Awesome! Pigments are awesome. Just messy on the table. 😅
Can you tell me what types of hair are in your drybrush? The big one I mean.
It is an oil painting brush, kinda stiff. I think it could be boar hair? ☺️
@@DonSuratos ok. I think I can steal that from my wife 😏
Question, do you use water in your wet pallet and then use water above the foil? Or is it just a dry wet pallet? 😅😁
Oh... No water on top of the paper bro. ☺️🎨🎨🎨
thanks for the great idea of basecoating zenithals ,this part i have to replicate next time i pick up a brush..But my next step will be with GW contrast paints to see the result because it could be awesome or totally fail (on bigger flat surfaces?) and i am too curious to do not try it =)
Contrast paint will work. But I must admit, they can be too opaque or too transparent. Mediums should help soften them for larger surfaces. ☺️
can someone tell me what kind of dice these are?!
Warmachine dice sir. ☺️
@@DonSuratos Thank you mate :)
Cheers! ☺️🎨🎨🎨
A completely different question: What magnification do you use with your glasses?
Oh... x1.5 or x2 I think. ☺️
@@DonSuratos you are indeed. Thank you. Keep up the awesome videos. They are very helpful.
I will continue to practice with this method, and I am watching your new "How To Glaze Miniatures (Squig Skin) video now.
looks like this ork is in bath of light.😎
Just got some of those magic mediums to play with. Glaze medium helps in keeping the paint pigments/particles in flat/thin layer and wet/runny which eezes the flow. water evaporates so extremely fast with acrylic paints. plastic is less porous than paper, even with primer.
Awesome! Now you can help me explain why mediums are better than water! 😅🎨🎨🎨
Really love your video, looks great 👍🏻 and is really helpful. One of question where did you get your Red Grass painting/cutting mat (the white surface with the colour wheel in the top left corner)? I looked on their website but couldn’t find it (I love their wet palettes btw and will buy one 😁). If you can tell me where to get the white mat with the colour wheel I will certainly buy one of those as well 😁
Thank you. I think the RGG painting mat is still at Kickstarter. ☺️
@@DonSuratos thank you found it and very glad I have found your channel #subscribed
@@simonculley Thank you for the sub! Appreciate it a ton bro! ☺️🎨🎨🎨
A+ again
