I became a bully too. At some point, people have enough and they do become angry and resentful. But I'm seeing people that go OUT of their way to doxx and ruin and harass others to destroy their credibility and livelihood. Not everyone participating in cancel culture has been victimized. Some people like being a part of something or affecting change, and some are just sadistic trolls using a good cause to cause mayhem. But I agree with you. It is more complicated than I made it sound.
Cancel culture is also a type of aggressive harassment. Contacting families, bosses, businesses associated, doxxing by looking up license plates, addresses, phone numbers, etc.

Cancel culture exists for the same reason witch hunts existed; resentful groups of people need a common enemy to unite against. The mob needs a scapegoat. By accusing a person of some transgression (such as racism or sexism), the woke mob strips the accused individual of all protection. By uniting against an accused individual and persecuting them, the angry mob takes revenge for all the injustices done against them. As they persecute their victim, the mob experiences collective catharsis. This irrational scapegoating occurs when society's social bonds weaken and mutual suspicion grows. Scapegoating innocent people is a way to restore a threatened sense of community.
Nowadays people confuse justice for revenge. They dont want people to improve and show positive change (Which is a massive plus, alot of people are too proud to accept the morally wrong stuff they've done 10 years ago). They just want revenge, and the thing is. It doesnt help the person improve, they just go for their money because "Yes! Now that the person is bankrupt and is miserable, we did it. That depends on what is ''wrong''. I find that people that engage in cancel culture constantly throw around the terms ''racist'' ''homophobe'' ''bigot" ''sexist'' in order to cancel someone, but in reality those terms have become so nebulous with regards to their meaning. There are many examples in this comment section of people being cancelled for ridiculous reasons while being labelled one of the above terms. The big problem is that those terms have no stable definition, cancel culturists can consider something extremely mild or even a joke as ''racist'', ''sexist'' etc. Everything is sexist and racist nowadays, for example the tv show Friends would probably be canceled today for some scenes it has that could be considered ''racist'', ''homophobe'' or ''sexist'' today.

THey went down an unhealthy path and they suffer now from social isolation. THe current crop of Antifa and BLM demonstrators view them as old losers and sadly so do mainstream people of their own age.They have led very limited lives, stuck in who they were in their 20s, now in their 70s and they are mostly just sad.

Kevin Hornbuckle Would it make any real difference? He is a PhD in clinical practice. He begins with a disclaimer that he is not giving a diagnosis. While he may not be a subject matter expert he has more than a basic understanding of the information. In my humble opinion he does an excellent job of providing the basics to the layperson.
Scott P My opinion is that it would make a difference. I have seen him make errors that a forensic psychologist would not. Training in counseling psychology is different from that in forensic psychology (for good reasons). Dr. Grande does indeed have some valuable insights into forensic psychology cases. But you cannot infer from that that it is his formal training - as someone did here. As for myself, I have an MA in clinical psychology. My knowledge of forensic psychology is informal.
On a wider point, I can only imagine that people throughout the world who’ve been on COVID-19 lockdown for the last few months have had even MORE time to devote to negative & destructive campaigns of hate on the internet/social media, as their opportunities of actual "real world" physical interactions with other human beings, in person, [whether at school/college, or in a workplace environment] have by necessity been drastically restricted.

I love your analysis. It's not just celebs and businesses anymore though. There have been lots of people who aren't at all famous who have had the cancel crowd come after their jobs for saying the wrong thing in a public forum or for just following someone the cancelers find distasteful. I suppose you could say that they become public figures when they insert themselves into a public discussion without the protection of anonymity but what about the teacher who forgot she followed Infowars for the laughs years ago or the random man who ends up in a deceptively edited viral video at a fast food restaurant? No one is safe from being canceled. Discussions are impossible when a poor choice of words, a dissenting opinion, or an old follow can threaten your livelihood. It seems like cancel culture gets more extreme by the day.
It's also true that many people will not always act in a socially ""acceptable"" manner due to conditions that could range from personality disorders to autism, or simply due to stress factors in a given moment. Many people who participate in the mob will be found chanting slogans like "end the stigma of mental illness", but it's those of us with mental health complications that are perhaps most vulnerable under the decentralised panopticon of social scrutiny.

1. The entity being canceled often has a large audience that appreciate it. There are people who were not offended and lose out if the entity is canceled. 2. The thing being canceled can easily be avoided by those who cancel. You can consume something else if it bothers you and respect those who appreciate the entity. 3. The boundaries are unclear on what is cancel worthy. 4. The boundaries are ever changing (as they are in any society) and so punishment is being delivered retroactively. 5. Retroactive punishment means that we are assuming those who did or said the thing 20 years ago had the same awareness that we have today. 6. The punishment called for doesn't always match the "crime." (Being blacklisted from your industry, dropped by your advertisers, suppliers, agent etc). 7. Evil motive is ascribed to the entity rather than carelessness. They take the worst possible meaning from what was said and ignore what they person says they meant. 8. People are disincentivised to speak out against this part of society. The cancellers will say if you are not in support of "us" you must be in support of "them" [the thing we are accusing the entity of] and you should be canceled yourself!
Thank you for discussing this. I've seen so much obsessive canceling this year it is scary. It worries me that some day the target of canceling will do something awful. It can get so negative, obsessive, agressive, relentless and scary (especially when the target is vulnerable in some way). It seems like those that obsess in canceling are so self righteous and they lack any ability or willingness to empathize.
this doesn't just happen to celebrity and brands, either. at least those entities (usually) have money, a following, etc behind them. imagine being in your 20s and being threatened, ousted by your primary social group, and attacked for something you did that was "morally wrong" in your early 20s. your brain isn't even fully developed at that point. the idea that people can't change and grow is reprehensible. i've seen firsthand the toll these types of attacks can take on a person. losing all your friends and being publicly shamed/accused/condemned by people you don't even know is scarring. it doesn't matter what you say, it won't stop these people. if you apologize, if you stay silent, defend yourself- it doesn't matter, it only makes it worse. it's a toxic combination of black and white thinking and perceived moral superiority that at the end of the day can have serious detrimental consequences on the person being canceled's mental health. having watched this happen recently to someone i care about, i really needed to see something like this. i'm going to school for psychology so i really try to apply logic and critical thinking, but also empathy, to situations. i've been feeling so anxious and second guessing everything lately because of the public bullying i've experienced for defending a loved one. so thank you.

Great analysis, as always. I'd just like to add that it doesn't only target companies and celebrities, but often working class individuals as well. For example last month a man was fired for cracking his knuckles outside his car window which was mistaken for an alleged white supremacy symbol.

It could've been more than the hand-motion, which incidentally IS often used as the equivalent of a secret handshake among neo-Nazis. So glad you made this video! I agree with you so much in this topic. I am in my 40s now and can't stand cancel culture. It doesn't allow people to prove they have changed. It just seems so toxic and close minded. I always try to look at things from multiple points of view now and when I was younger, I easily jumped on the band wagon.

I recall Johnny Depp being 'cancelled' not too long ago for 'abusing' his girlfriend and cancellers trashed him, then when it turned out his girlfriend was in fact abusing him, the damage was done and there is no accountability. I think also ties in with the MeToo movement in some ways also

Nah. Once upon a time it was called Excommunication or Blacklisting, and it only went one way: it was the powerful punching down. Now it could, conceivably, go both ways. Though it's important to remember that no powerful person is likely to have their lives ruined forever because some people on FB or wherever told them, "Hey, you're really a dick and I'm not buying your products anymore."
i agree, but i would rather blame college campus's and SJW's for cancel culture. social media is merely but a platform. Agreed. I think that line between the two needs to be clarified more. I don't agree with cancel culture at all, but also think the pendulum can't totally swing in the other direction. It's important to speak up for what's right & try to make change, but I think the method is what makes it become cancel culture.
I think that the main diferences are: healthy criticism is focused on growth and uses dialogue as main method, cancel culture is focused on punishment and uses persecution as main method. Also, in cancel culture, there's no real preoccupation about checking the facts, it reminds me of that expression: "shoot first, ask questions later".
Yeah. Also there are people who claim they're being "cancelled" just because they were told off by a few people. The term is rapidly evolving to mean, "Every reaction to me that I didn't like."

There's a lot of talk on beliefs, logic and morals when these type of public scandals occur, but hardly ever I hear about envy and opportunism. And they do damage, specially when they target small business, low rank social figures or people struggling with health issues. Judgment is not supposed to be emotional or cruel, but reasonable. And reason takes time, and the ability to look at the questioned object, idea or being through many different angles. Slow-moving justice should not stay out of fashion.
In all honesty I feel like cancel culture is the result of mistakes we made over the last 20-30 years trying to teach generations Y and Z to be more accepting of eachother. The problem was that we never taught them the limit... Now they've just swung back around in the opposite direction.

Seeing Madison Beer get cancelled for being essentially "too pretty" really showed me cancel culture's true colours. They try to claim that she sets unrealistic and unfair beauty standard because she looks like how she looks? And they used a picture of her getting a mole removed to claim she had surgery and now she gets tons of hate. At least cancel culture never really works
Dr. Grande hits another grand slam on the ball field of conceptual psychology! I think the recent rise of cancel culture here in the U.S. is at least partially connected to our current state of political polarization. For instance, I've always interpreted cancel culture to be a situation wherein a celebrity or public figure says or does something that "offends" a subset of politically obsessed people, and then those people blackball the public figure via any means necessary. This leads to job loss, social isolation and general hatred toward the blackballed individual. Of course, there are many other interpersonal conflicts to which this concept applies, as you brilliantly explained in this video. I've learned so much from your videos! Thanks, again.
Todd, please do the psychology of call out culture (very similar), how it's used to gain brownie points within a group. I went back to college for gender studies and advocacy/counselling for abuse victims and ended up not going into the field after due to the whole call out thing. You'd see how someone would say something innocent and it would be spun into some sort of "ism" so everyone could bond in their united calling out of the poor victim. I think it's important to look at this seeing as how it's become the norm and although much of the "calling out" is justified the pendulum has swung and it's now a way to bully others. My workplace came to remind me of how I walked on eggshells with my Borderline mother as a kid, seeing people having their every word policed so one starts to overthink everything before daring to speak. If you point out that the targeted person was just misunderstood the anger is then aimed at you so people stay silent to avoid being next. I didn't go into a field to help survivors to see so much abuse and meanness among shelter staff while, ironically, we were supposed to help others escape that kind of abuse. I chose to leave rather than be in that toxic environment and have gone back to being a starving artist, too old for that crap, not worth the stress. Thanks so much for your great vids.

I'm currently reading a history book about the Russian Revolution and it's a mirror image of what we're seeing now. I had never heard the term before this and now I see that my own sister is a part of it, and it makes complete sense as she believes she is "a warrior in a great moral battle", spending all-day-long on-line fighting for moral justice--even trying to bring down entire universities--only to actually lose every single time. This comment to me shows that you didn't really pay attention to anything he ever said. He is not taking sides, in some stupid games. He looks at thing with critical thinking. He doesn't say that people shouldn't be reprimanded for their bad actions or that outrage against terrible people is bad, he says that being malicious for the sake of it is bad. He says that reprimand must allow for growth and change. He only talks about the extremists here, not about people who want positive changes. I want to say I appreciate your bravery. I very rarely call anyone brave. But you understand the risks by even talking about cancel culture existing - there are powerful people (journalists in major orgs) who are smearing and cancelling good people who dare say it is happening. Interesting concept for a video. I never thought about it this way but the traits you discussed do seem to line up. I’d like to see more on internet trolls now that you bring it up.
I agree that dialogue is a sensible solution. However, when the insults start the dialogue has ended. When people resort to defamation, humiliation and offensive judgments that’s when their critical thinking is running short of ideas. It’s much more cumbersome to apply logic, intelligent reasoning and even forgiveness while dealing with opposing thoughts. The same way that this group takes to their celebrities in such a fast and passionate fashion they also easily dispose of them quite abruptly and mercilessly. Dr. Grande, it took me months of watching your videos for me to really understand what you are all about. It didn’t happen overnight. Now I fully endorse you and I can give numerous reasons why to anyone. There are some other UA-camrs that I respect deeply but again it took me a long time to form that opinion. Anyways, that’s how I approach this rapidly changing culture. That’s such a good topic for a video, well done Dr. Grande!❤️

I'm so glad you talked about this... There is something almost relieving hearing a level headed mindful take on the matter. There's so much aggression in the world in general that I found this topic to be really bothersome but couldn't see how anyone could have a proper dialogue without the particular subset of crusaders coming forth to condemn anyone that disagreed to be ignorant or toxic themselves. I've been journaling lately about how toxic this culture of selfrighteous behavior is, and how it throws shame at others as if that is the way to foster compassion. And it seems that if you oppose it publicly you're all things that are evil. So I've had very few places to talk about this in, it's been very isolating. I would love for you to go further into this topic, and discuss how to promote accountability and compassion in an actually healthy way. Yep also onlineshaming had it for 6 years interfering in my life to such an extent I didn’t want to live - can’t stop it. These were folk in their 50s & 60s, whole organisations took part too. They have never talked to me as I wanted to resolve this but no, they even take me to court because they have the power - it’s dreadful
It’s interesting to hear your thoughts about how once they feel slighted, the cancel culture propagators discard them. I was watching videos about Paranoid Personality Disorder yesterday and they seem somewhat paranoid. The mistrust, how they feel like, “You’re against me? You’re dead to me” or “You’re deceiving me, you’re lying to me” kind of thing.

4:09 “This group is not well-studied” has two interpretations. Blame me for initially getting the wrong one. I’m perplexed by the lengths to which cancel culture goes. Indeed, certainly the fringe demands ideological perfection, as defined by that fringe. I think they feel they’re leading a much larger group, or they expect people to see the righteousness (not the self-righteousness it really is) or be swayed by their attempts to hide opposing views. Hopefully this fad will fall apart and create room for more constructive discourse. I fear that won’t happen so easily given the dynamics of social media.
Ideas about social justice and equality are hundreds of years old and come from Europe. The idea that all people should follow extreme political correctness is a newer and more narcissistic trend that seems to have come from the United States.

You are exactly right! There are some UA-camrs I had to stop watching for this very reason. They are malicious and hateful, but they pretend to be some kind of moral warriors. I'd like to add that imposing suffering on anyone through canceling, rarely results in a change or conversion of heart, ideas, growth, etc. However, love, conversation, and good actions on our part often inspire and lead to the true conversion of heart, ideals, and actions of others. We need more people to act like Mother Teresa, Dorothy Day, Martin Luther King, and Booker T. Washington to create change. This canceling is just creating more hurt, suffering, and destruction.

My church camp was more traumatic than my school camps. So this twisted hypocritical non-sense has been going on since our recorded his-stories. Cancel culture exists for the same reason witch hunts existed; resentful groups of people need a common enemy to unite against. The mob needs a scapegoat. By accusing a person of some transgression (such as racism or sexism), the woke mob strips the accused individual of all protection. By uniting against an accused individual and persecuting them, the angry mob takes revenge for all the injustices done against them. As they persecute their victim, the mob experiences collective catharsis.
This irrational scapegoating occurs when society's social bonds weaken and mutual suspicion grows. Scapegoating innocent people is a way to restore a threatened sense of community.

Thank you for dragging cancel culture. I think people need to know when they do something wrong , but harrassing people all day every day and never letting them grow is downright bullying and disgusting!
That depends on what is ''wrong''. I find that people that engage in cancel culture constantly throw around the terms ''racist'' ''homophobe'' ''bigot" ''sexist'' in order to cancel someone, but in reality those terms have become so nebulous with regards to their meaning.
There are many examples in this comment section of people being cancelled for ridiculous reasons while being labelled one of the above terms.
The big problem is that those terms have no stable definition, cancel culturists can consider something extremely mild or even a joke as ''racist'', ''sexist'' etc. Everything is sexist and racist nowadays, for example the tv show Friends would probably be canceled today for some scenes it has that could be considered ''racist'', ''homophobe'' or ''sexist'' today.
The people doing this 'cancelling' are narcissists. The goal isn't to solve an actual problem. The goal is to assert themselves as your moral superior.
In almost all cases, nobody is actually getting hurt if the person or thing they're trying to cancel is left alone instead.

Kevin Hornbuckle Would it make any real difference? He is a PhD in clinical practice. He begins with a disclaimer that he is not giving a diagnosis. While he may not be a subject matter expert he has more than a basic understanding of the information. In my humble opinion he does an excellent job of providing the basics to the layperson.
Scott P My opinion is that it would make a difference. I have seen him make errors that a forensic psychologist would not. Training in counseling psychology is different from that in forensic psychology (for good reasons). Dr. Grande does indeed have some valuable insights into forensic psychology cases. But you cannot infer from that that it is his formal training - as someone did here. As for myself, I have an MA in clinical psychology. My knowledge of forensic psychology is informal.

I love your analysis. It's not just celebs and businesses anymore though. There have been lots of people who aren't at all famous who have had the cancel crowd come after their jobs for saying the wrong thing in a public forum or for just following someone the cancelers find distasteful. I suppose you could say that they become public figures when they insert themselves into a public discussion without the protection of anonymity but what about the teacher who forgot she followed Infowars for the laughs years ago or the random man who ends up in a deceptively edited viral video at a fast food restaurant? No one is safe from being canceled. Discussions are impossible when a poor choice of words, a dissenting opinion, or an old follow can threaten your livelihood. It seems like cancel culture gets more extreme by the day.
It's also true that many people will not always act in a socially ""acceptable"" manner due to conditions that could range from personality disorders to autism, or simply due to stress factors in a given moment. Many people who participate in the mob will be found chanting slogans like "end the stigma of mental illness", but it's those of us with mental health complications that are perhaps most vulnerable under the decentralised panopticon of social scrutiny.
So true. I think I just got canceled by my old friend groups on facebook simply for saying that I don’t want to unfriend people who hold differing opinions from myself. I never even said what my opinion was, just that I agreed to disagree.

And some judge others by “projecting” intention onto them.
1. The entity being canceled often has a large audience that appreciate it. There are people who were not offended and lose out if the entity is canceled.
2. The thing being canceled can easily be avoided by those who cancel. You can consume something else if it bothers you and respect those who appreciate the entity.
3. The boundaries are unclear on what is cancel worthy.
4. The boundaries are ever changing (as they are in any society) and so punishment is being delivered retroactively.
5. Retroactive punishment means that we are assuming those who did or said the thing 20 years ago had the same awareness that we have today.
6. The punishment called for doesn't always match the "crime." (Being blacklisted from your industry, dropped by your advertisers, suppliers, agent etc).
7. Evil motive is ascribed to the entity rather than carelessness. They take the worst possible meaning from what was said and ignore what they person says they meant.
8. People are disincentivised to speak out against this part of society. The cancellers will say if you are not in support of "us" you must be in support of "them" [the thing we are accusing the entity of] and you should be canceled yourself!

Thank you for discussing this. I've seen so much obsessive canceling this year it is scary. It worries me that some day the target of canceling will do something awful. It can get so negative, obsessive, agressive, relentless and scary (especially when the target is vulnerable in some way). It seems like those that obsess in canceling are so self righteous and they lack any ability or willingness to empathize.

this doesn't just happen to celebrity and brands, either. at least those entities (usually) have money, a following, etc behind them. imagine being in your 20s and being threatened, ousted by your primary social group, and attacked for something you did that was "morally wrong" in your early 20s. your brain isn't even fully developed at that point. the idea that people can't change and grow is reprehensible. i've seen firsthand the toll these types of attacks can take on a person. losing all your friends and being publicly shamed/accused/condemned by people you don't even know is scarring. it doesn't matter what you say, it won't stop these people. if you apologize, if you stay silent, defend yourself- it doesn't matter, it only makes it worse. it's a toxic combination of black and white thinking and perceived moral superiority that at the end of the day can have serious detrimental consequences on the person being canceled's mental health.
having watched this happen recently to someone i care about, i really needed to see something like this. i'm going to school for psychology so i really try to apply logic and critical thinking, but also empathy, to situations. i've been feeling so anxious and second guessing everything lately because of the public bullying i've experienced for defending a loved one. so thank you.

I'd just like to add that it doesn't only target companies and celebrities, but often working class individuals as well. For example last month a man was fired for cracking his knuckles outside his car window which was mistaken for an alleged white supremacy symbol.
People need to fight back, legally if needed , their NEEDS to be a push back on all this truly sick unjust behavior!

It could've been more than the hand-motion, which incidentally IS often used as the equivalent of a secret handshake among neo-Nazis. RWers screaming about how wrong the firing was (a number of them in the comments there were yapping about how "the Jews got him fired," like that makes a lick of sense) should consider demanding the end of At-Will employment via their state reps. Then people like this man would have more recourse in these situations than they do now.

Like who? I've only seen people have their lives destroyed while it's happening. Pewdiepie lost his UA-cam show, sponsors and has his contraversy for ever now. James Charles lost so many subs and his mental health took a dive. Jeffree Star and Shane have lost support in company's and losing subs as we speak. When the croud is coming they lose a lot, but when they move on to the next "victim" (saying this as some are, some are not) they still have to rebuild what's been broken and some never recover

I am in my 40s now and can't stand cancel culture. It doesn't allow people to prove they have changed. It just seems so toxic and close minded. I always try to look at things from multiple points of view now and when I was younger, I easily jumped on the band wagon.

Completely agree Dr. Grande. It is disturbing seeing how easily people can have their lives destroyed just because 15 year old girls on Twitter choose to do so. I recall Johnny Depp being 'cancelled' not too long ago for 'abusing' his girlfriend and cancellers trashed him, then when it turned out his girlfriend was in fact abusing him, the damage was done and there is no accountability. I think also ties in with the MeToo movement in some ways also
if I had a sixty million dollar New York media contract the first clause in it (by my New York lawyers) would be that an "accusation" is just that, especially something a decade or two, or THREE ago. interesting that in most of Europe these movements are not getting much traction, no matter the merits.

Nah. Once upon a time it was called Excommunication or Blacklisting, and it only went one way: it was the powerful punching down. Now it could, conceivably, go both ways. Though it's important to remember that no powerful person is likely to have their lives ruined forever because some people on FB or wherever told them, "Hey, you're really a dick and I'm not buying your products anymore."
i agree, but i would rather blame college campus's and SJW's for cancel culture. social media is merely but a platform. Agreed. I think that line between the two needs to be clarified more. I don't agree with cancel culture at all, but also think the pendulum can't totally swing in the other direction. It's important to speak up for what's right & try to make change, but I think the method is what makes it become cancel culture.
I think that the main diferences are: healthy criticism is focused on growth and uses dialogue as main method, cancel culture is focused on punishment and uses persecution as main method. Also, in cancel culture, there's no real preoccupation about checking the facts, it reminds me of that expression: "shoot first, ask questions later".

I've been saying this for a while and I'm glad to hear someone saying it too. There's a lot of talk on beliefs, logic and morals when these type of public scandals occur, but hardly ever I hear about envy and opportunism.
And they do damage, specially when they target small business, low rank social figures or people struggling with health issues. Judgment is not supposed to be emotional or cruel, but reasonable. And reason takes time, and the ability to look at the questioned object, idea or being through many different angles. Slow-moving justice should not stay out of fashion.
In all honesty I feel like cancel culture is the result of mistakes we made over the last 20-30 years trying to teach generations Y and Z to be more accepting of eachother. The problem was that we never taught them the limit... Now they've just swung back around in the opposite direction.

Seeing Madison Beer get cancelled for being essentially "too pretty" really showed me cancel culture's true colours. They try to claim that she sets unrealistic and unfair beauty standard because she looks like how she looks? And they used a picture of her getting a mole removed to claim she had surgery and now she gets tons of hate. At least cancel culture never really works

I think the recent rise of cancel culture here in the U.S. is at least partially connected to our current state of political polarization. For instance, I've always interpreted cancel culture to be a situation wherein a celebrity or public figure says or does something that "offends" a subset of politically obsessed people, and then those people blackball the public figure via any means necessary. This leads to job loss, social isolation and general hatred toward the blackballed individual.
Of course, there are many other interpersonal conflicts to which this concept applies, as you brilliantly explained in this video.

Todd, please do the psychology of call out culture (very similar), how it's used to gain brownie points within a group. I went back to college for gender studies and advocacy/counselling for abuse victims and ended up not going into the field after due to the whole call out thing. You'd see how someone would say something innocent and it would be spun into some sort of "ism" so everyone could bond in their united calling out of the poor victim. I think it's important to look at this seeing as how it's become the norm and although much of the "calling out" is justified the pendulum has swung and it's now a way to bully others. My workplace came to remind me of how I walked on eggshells with my Borderline mother as a kid, seeing people having their every word policed so one starts to overthink everything before daring to speak. If you point out that the targeted person was just misunderstood the anger is then aimed at you so people stay silent to avoid being next. I didn't go into a field to help survivors to see so much abuse and meanness among shelter staff while, ironically, we were supposed to help others escape that kind of abuse. I chose to leave rather than be in that toxic environment and have gone back to being a starving artist, too old for that crap, not worth the stress. Thanks so much for your great vids.
I really appreciate you defining what it is and who engages. Some people say it’s okay but they are talking about the “normal” parameters you set, when really its about the abnormal, extremes that define cancel culture.

I'm currently reading a history book about the Russian Revolution and it's a mirror image of what we're seeing now. You mistaken in thinking our economy is like a pie, with limited resources. It's not like that. If a person becomes a Billionaire, they don't affect your chances for making money. Because they're wealthy, I benefit. Think of our economy as a garden. Get in there and GET YOURS! Your not a victim.

thank you! i love that you made the distinction between cancel culture and boycotting. they seem to be synonymous to the average person and it really bothers me. boycotting is a healthy, peaceful, sometimes effective way to hold companies and people accountable. cancel culture is killing peoples' careers because they said something mildly offensive to some people 10 years ago while drunk, before whatever they said was even considered offensive

It is not enough to be an entertainer anymore, one must be an activist as well. There is nothing wrong with outrage in appropriate situations, but this movement is becoming militant.

This comment to me shows that you didn't really pay attention to anything he ever said. He is not taking sides, in some stupid games. He looks at thing with critical thinking. He doesn't say that people shouldn't be reprimanded for their bad actions or that outrage against terrible people is bad, he says that being malicious for the sake of it is bad. He says that reprimand must allow for growth and change. He only talks about the extremists here, not about people who want positive changes. Can you please do a video explaining the profiles of the personalities involved in the Evergreen University incident with Bret Weinstein? I feel this is a very important incident that needs public analysis.

But you understand the risks by even talking about cancel culture existing - there are powerful people (journalists in major orgs) who are smearing and cancelling good people who dare say it is happening. Interesting concept for a video. I never thought about it this way but the traits you discussed do seem to line up. I’d like to see more on internet trolls now that you bring it up.
I agree that dialogue is a sensible solution. However, when the insults start the dialogue has ended. When people resort to defamation, humiliation and offensive judgments that’s when their critical thinking is running short of ideas. It’s much more cumbersome to apply logic, intelligent reasoning and even forgiveness while dealing with opposing thoughts. The same way that this group takes to their celebrities in such a fast and passionate fashion they also easily dispose of them quite abruptly and mercilessly.
Dr. Grande, it took me months of watching your videos for me to really understand what you are all about. It didn’t happen overnight. Now I fully endorse you and I can give numerous reasons why to anyone. There are some other UA-camrs that I respect deeply but again it took me a long time to form that opinion. Anyways, that’s how I approach this rapidly changing culture.

I've been journaling lately about how toxic this culture of selfrighteous behavior is, and how it throws shame at others as if that is the way to foster compassion. And it seems that if you oppose it publicly you're all things that are evil. So I've had very few places to talk about this in, it's been very isolating. I would love for you to go further into this topic, and discuss how to promote accountability and compassion in an actually healthy way. Excellent video, Dr. Grande. And thanks for pointing out the fact that when a company, person,etc. truly does something abhorrent or distasteful they can just blame the current trend of "cancel culture " as to any criticism leveled at them, hence the criticism not being taken seriously.

4:09 “This group is not well-studied” has two interpretations. Blame me for initially getting the wrong one.
I’m perplexed by the lengths to which cancel culture goes. Indeed, certainly the fringe demands ideological perfection, as defined by that fringe. I think they feel they’re leading a much larger group, or they expect people to see the righteousness (not the self-righteousness it really is) or be swayed by their attempts to hide opposing views. Hopefully this fad will fall apart and create room for more constructive discourse. I fear that won’t happen so easily given the dynamics of social media.
I recommend Michael Rectenwald's book on the topic.
Ideas about social justice and equality are hundreds of years old and come from Europe. The idea that all people should follow extreme political correctness is a newer and more narcissistic trend that seems to have come from the United States.

I think is interisting that the name "cancel culture" was coined as some people were begining to suffer the same as other people during decades/centuries. Maybe this could be the chance to end with this for EVERYONE.

You are exactly right! There are some UA-camrs I had to stop watching for this very reason. They are malicious and hateful, but they pretend to be some kind of moral warriors. It’s sickening that they are so hateful AND they are simply looking for an opportunity to make a dollar by spreading their hate. Dad Challenge Podcast, Slo4n, and that terrible Without a Crystal Ball Woman come to mind immediately!

I'd like to add that imposing suffering on anyone through canceling, rarely results in a change or conversion of heart, ideas, growth, etc. However, love, conversation, and good actions on our part often inspire and lead to the true conversion of heart, ideals, and actions of others. We need more people to act like Mother Teresa, Dorothy Day, Martin Luther King, and Booker T. Washington to create change. This canceling is just creating more hurt, suffering, and destruction.
I was not disapointed. You deliver balanced, on point analisys everytime. It's incredible to the point, i'm secretely starting to root for your failure. I thought, Grande is a good guy, he's gonna fall for that one. Nope. Maybe do one extremely biased episode for april fools day or just don't hold back for once, so we know you're an actual human (also, to satisfy my dark urges).

You make an interesting point. It's hard for many of us to understand something good when we have it. It's little flaws and idiosyncrasies that make people human and easier to accept love and appreciate.
@@tashastarling870 oh, yeah, you summed it up pretty nice. I watch Dr Grande for so long, that it's uncanny that there isn't a single slip up. My subconcious is going haywire about it, like i mentioned jokingly above, and it's hillarious that i have to remind myself just how heavily premeditated content i'm actually watching. My lizardbrain just refuses to believe that Dr Grande is not a person I really know and have any kind of relationship with(except that one time he loved my comment;).
