He never gets enough credit for changing the game but to give you an idea. The driving distance avg for this event was 266, Daly averaged 299. That is almost 40 yards above the field. Pretty incredible.

@@DanielSong39 1991 PGA was the first time the Tour ever stopped at Crooked Stick. Caddie Jeff "Squeaky" Medlen got the from Daly at 5:00pm the night before the Championship and didn't know the Terrain either. Caddie and Daly both went to Crooked Stick without a Clue, and wound up with the Championship Trophy.
I remember watching John play at the Durban Country Club on the Sunshine Tour about 3-4 years before this PGA Championship. He was striking the ball to never before seen areas of our home course. Everyone was mesmerised by John’s prodigious distance and the impact sound of clubhead and ball. You somehow knew that this could happen!! Yes, I was surprised how fast he played. It's refreshing. There's nothing worse than having to watch a player take forever in his pre-shot routine. Like Phil told Sergio, "Just hit the damn ball."

Someone was debating whether JD should be in the hall of fame a few days ago and I have been thinking about it. My conclusion is that if I were him it wouldn't make much difference one way or another. Sure it would be a great honor, and I don't want to take anything away from that. But he won the open at the birthplace of golf. The old course. Standing in St. Andrew's and hearing your name inserted after "champion golfer of the year" is the absolute top of the mountain in golf to me.
I'm new to golf. And I only recently heard the underdog tale of John Daly, and have never sat and watched an entire tour on the tellie before. But I would TOTALLY watch the an entire several hour long video that was the complete, full footage of this ENTIRE event, so that I can watch it all in its glory (especially hole 17 where he apparently got a double bogey), in order to fully appreciate this amazing, legendary feat.
Got to love John Daly. What you see is what you get. The presentation committee have never seen the likes of this guy. Shame we don't have more like him in any sport.

Daly was "grip it and rip it" and was nuking it WAY beyond everyone for years, but he had an awesome short game too. Even when Tiger turned pro, I remember a Skins game when Daly was still plowing it 40+ yards beyond Tiger just because. Obviously, Tiger is one of the best if not the best ever, but Daly really began a cultural shift in '91 when the blue-collar guys started looking at each other and said "hey, maybe you or me could do this too."
