Let me share this. In 1998, during an ice storm in Montreal, Quebec, the grid was down for 2+ weeks. Ice had felled electric lines and trees alike. I was living in a 4-storey apartment block. At the start of week 2 of the blackout, police officers came door-to-door through our building to evacuate the tenants to sleep en masse on the floor of a school auditorium. When they knocked on my door and I opened it, the police jumped back, startled. "You have power!?" they cried. I said, "Hi, would you like to come in for dinner?” I had light, heat, and the Cantonese chow mein was cooking. And I was doing it all with 24-hour candles I had bought in bulk at the local dollar store. To cook, I was using an antique mesh-wire foldable frying basket that had been just a decoration on my top shelf. I took it down, put a saucer in the base, arranged three candles in the saucer, sticking them in place with their own melted wax. I then balanced a 2-inch deep enamel pan on the wide, top edge of the basket, and was able to use it to boil water for me and a neighbour, and best of all to cook. It was just like cooking on gas. To keep the cold to a minimum, I had used masking tape to cover the big picture windows with newspaper. This prevented the glass from transmitting too much cold indoors, and from cooling the air I was heating with clumps of candles in ceramic dishes. The police officers understood that I didn’t need to be evacuated, and left me in peace, the only tenant in the entire building who didn’t have to leave. And probably the only one that didn’t catch a cold sleeping with hundreds of others on an auditorium floor. The fresh produce for the cooking came from a small store downstairs in the next building where they had a generator, so I just went down each day to buy fresh and make my tasy meals on my candle-fry-basket.

First I LOVE the kitty dish! Just wanted to add a few suggestions. We went through Sandy in NJ 2012, I cooked up every piece of meat 4 days out when the suggestion of the storm hitting us came over the airwaves. I then refroze all the meaty meals in aluminum pans in the deep freezer. Of course we lost power for 9days and trees were down all around us we were basically trapped in our home! We reheated the meals in sterno racks or on the grill and ate very well over the course of the disaster. Our deep freezer held up very well and kept everything nice and cold. I did check the temp of food before warming it up just in case. I almost threw out my mother’s fondue pot but thought it would be awesome for soup! You have excellent ideas! Thank you for sharing.
I am so happy that you found this useful. I like to think outside of the box and creatively. See you on the next one, and thank you for sharing your story with us, it is very relatable. Cheers!
Yes An, great idea. I do have many options for food idea, but the video would have ended up being an hour. I will focus on sharing more in future videos. Love your ideas. Cheers!
I recommend practicing your chosen method of emergency cooking before you need it -- so you don't run into any surprises. Adding the element of romance is a bonus.
I thought I was clever, the way I used my fondue pot stand with my coffee percolator and frying pan, but you just kicked it up a notch! Thanks for all the ideas!

I live in South Florida; hurricane preparedness is vital. I will not use propane or charcoal (family member accident) For years I have used the sterno cooking fuel - fast, can be used indoors, reusable. With power out for nearly 2 weeks, hot coffee, decent meals every day while our neighbors ran out of propane & charcoal. We had run out of bread,no convenience of a store. Had a box of bread mix - took pavers from the garden & cookie rack to make an oven. Placed 2 stereo on bottom & just let bread bake Nothing like fresh homemade bread, peanut and jelly with hot soup!
I've only recently begun to stock 12 & 24 hour votive candles for warming and Sterno style fuels for chaffing dish style cooking. Absolutely love seeing you are making them known to so many !! I get my supplies from a local restaurant supply store that has managed to stay in business through lockdowns.
Hi Dana, being that I am a Chef, I generally have these on hand all the time. They are a great thing to have in your Emergency Prepared kit, so I am happy to re-share this information to remind people. The best price I have found for the Fancy Flame alcohol fuel is at The Dollar store...for $1 of course. Cheers!
When I was younger living in CT, we had power outages all the time. My parents use to break out the Colman camp stove to cook. It worked perfectly. It's always good to have one of these on hand for such occasions. Later years, we also had a kerosene heater for the colder months, which did the job. Kerosene is more expensive than it use to be but it is good for emergencies especially if you don't have a generator or a woodstove. It's also good to have a carbon monoxide monitor while running a kerosene heater. It does smell when you first start it up and then the odor goes away.
Thanks Mindy, I enjoyed this video very much, containing very interesting information. In Europe an energy crisis is going and winter has not started yet so it could be of use. I specially love your self-sustainability you are showing. Looking forward to another one. Cheers and love.
I am SOOO glad you have never met anyone who has done themselves in by cooking! Giggle. And yes, catsup vital for grilled cheese and many other yummy meals. I’m thinking this slow flame cooking might be a smooth and romantic date activity there Mindy! You GO girl! 🧑🏼🍳🥪🍲🫖
You do have a point there. I suppose it could possibly be a tad difficult to meet someone who has done themself in. I love your sense of humor almost as much as the knowledge you share.
Oh Darn Sandy, I have heard of this from some of my other subscribers that are in Australia. There may be challenging times ahead, but if you practice self reliance when you are calm and collected, I promise it will feel like camping...in the house...lol...if the grid goes down. Cheers!
Have you got hot water bottles? If power is out and you can boil water you can make a hot water bottle. I put one behind my back as it's sore and found it really does wonders to warm you up. I also fill empty glass screw lid wine bottles with hot water and use these to warm up my bed. . Becareful not to put too hot water in , so the glass doesn't crack. I found these really hold the heat well. I Hope you stay safe and warm .🇦🇺🕊️🩷
You had me at Crisco candles! Thank you SO MUCH for the thought and detail that you put in your videos (this one is amazing too!) - I can tell you REALLY CARE and that makes it even more special. This is the 2nd video of yours, that I have watched (the first one, for me, was the Crisco candle one - which prompted me to go and do it!) and I will now go back and catch up on all of the videos you've made! Thank you again
Really enjoyed your video. Great ideas. My suggestion is that you could use tent pegs to thread into your utensil holder stove to lift up a smaller sterno or fancy heat can. Someone else mentioned a can to put inside to lift up your gel fuel can. So many creative ideas.
Thank you for that tip! I have a similar camping stove meant to use wood fuel and was wondering how to make that work for inside since the rack seemed too far down for my sterno or chafing dish fuels, will have to try the tent stakes or maybe shish kebob sticks😁.
Butane one burner. They are small and used by chefs for demonstrations and work perfectly. Texas winter storm and I cooked on it. Bought more butane canisters for this winter.
Hello, Yes that is a good choice and I do have one of those. This video was created for people that may not prepare for power outages. Having creative ideas that are from some basic household items may help those folks. And thanks for suggesting the butane stove. Cheers!
Such wonderful practical ideas. I love them. I will definitely be stocking up sterno or terra flame canister. I never gave them a thought before believing they only kept food warm. I have a grill out back but if it's cold I'd rather be able to cook inside and out of the wind (might not be much warmer inside during a power outage).
Hello Sandy, word on the street is that this year will be filled with storms, cold and possible power outages. Be prepared and have fun with it. Cheers!
An iron kettle or pan would heat up better IMHO, and hold heat longer at a lower heat. Use them all the time on my electric stove. Great to use for outdoor cooking if over a wood fire.
So happy for you to own these, and for the rest of the world my ideas are equally just as good, as I demonstrated in this video. But, thanks for watching and throwing your 2 cents in. Cheers!
Hi there 9thE. I'm on the same page. 😊👍 I even have the same foods prepped. These methods work, I've used them during outages. I used a smaller pot with lid to boil water. I also used a smaller stainless steel fry pan, and was able to sear a small steak- it got very hot. You could easily do hot dogs or burgers imo. Very easy to heat any canned goods. I set mine up on my stove on a metal baking sheet for extra safety. I also purchased a camping mess kit in case. Looking at a Haines solar oven too. Cheers! ✌
Hello BI, thank you for your note. I agree about the smaller, thinner walled pots and pans, and yes they do work. In an attempt to keep things simple and food safe, I went with fast cooking foods and cooked meat. I would hate for anyone to fail at cooking meat, and then get sick. I am going to look up the Haines Solar oven as well. See you again soon and welcome to the channel. Cheers!
Mindy! I'm here originally bc of Jaylena, (in the crocker days 😖) and found you from Issac's channel! I'm a full time motorhome resident, and will never forget making solar soup in the dashboard when I was off grid! Even coffee and teas.
Hello and welcome to my channel, and thank you for giving me a chance to entertain you. May you find fun and uplifting content here always. See you again soon, Cheers!
I put my oats with liquid (water, almond milk, or whatever) and my add-ins (like raisins, cocoa nibs, berries, or nuts) in a mason jar and let it stand on the counter overnight. By morning, the oats are soft, the fruit is plump, and I can add in warm water or milk if I want to. Really, it doesn’t need to be cooked.
Using the utensil holder: i bought the one you showed on Amazon and I had good luck and bad. The canned fuel kept being extinguished when I placed the pot on top so I switched to a smaller Sterno style gel can and that worked fine. This method would work well for one or two people and for foods that only require a quick heat- up. Also- I found myself being concerned about the pot being knocked off the utensil holder. That didn’t happen however because I sat nearby the whole time. I’m practicing now- winter is coming! Positive point: I now have a sense of satisfaction about being ready for any upcoming winter emergencies. Im not dreading a power outage now. ⛄️ Thank you!
YAY! You understand the point of practicing. I know that these methods are not perfect, BUT, I wanted to empower people to think outside of the box and utilize common household items for emergencies. It is not necessary to have MRE meals and fancy stoves. Remember, you are not trying to cook a Holiday Dinner, you are trying to survive. Be safe, Cheers!
If you ever do want to get a dedicated pot holder they have them for backpacking. Usually they're standalone fire grates or backpacking pot stands. I think Coghlan makes one that's at big box stores

I really needed this . We just got a new stove earlier this year, and suddenly after using it just this Sunday, it doesn't work. What I mean is, the outlet it's hooked to, is out . We can't afford to have an electrician fix it either, so we're stuck with a new stove that doesn't work . I just know with the way things tend to go for us, the electrician is probably going to claim the entire house needs rewiring . We can't afford a rewiring, so we're doing without it . We still have a grill and a slowcooker, so I guess we'll be using those .
Look at my Gas One video back in December. They are $15 - $30 depending on where you live. There is an Amazon Link to mine that you can order. They take Butane Cans that can run pricey, but buy them in bulk, they are cheaper. I 100% cook on mine. Cheers!
Hi Anne, thanks for viewing this. It is nice to know that there are other meals that can be used in an Emergency that are affordable and tasty. If you did not see my last Live with Isaac cooking, I did not like the MRE and the Moutain House meals. They both tasted like garbage. Have fun and stay safe. Cheers!
Would it be helpful to add canned, frozen, and fresh vegetables and fruit to diversify the food and nutrition? Could you also add the use of an alcohol stove (Red Camp, Trangia, for example) in place of the canned fuel with any one of these methods?
Hi Daphne, are you a Home Economics teacher? The title of this video is about stoves that you can create yourself for an emergency. What you choose to cook on them or your dietary needs is up to you. The whole point of this video is to educate and inspire you before you have an emergency, so I hope I met this point. Cheers!
Such GREAT ideas!! Everything looked great! Thanks for these AWESOME tips!! I do have one that I'd like to share, Powdered Skim Milk, I use it every morning for my cereal, no worrying about refrigeration! It's also great for soups, and Mac and Cheese! Lol ... I was thinking 'ketchup' with the grilled cheese and then you said it, Great Canadian minds think alike!
Yes, I have a supply of powdered milk as well. If the grid goes down during the warmer months, the refrigerated milk won't last long. Also, I keep powdered milk on hand for the grandkids and neighbors with little ones.
We learned in Girl Scouts how to make buddy burners. You would use a 3 # metal coffee can. On the lower side of the can using a church key you will go around the side of the can putting triangle shaped holes on the side where the bottom of the can is, put them on that lower side punch leave a space, punch leave a space going all the way around the can. At the top side of the open can place a row around the side of the can. With needle nose pliers wrap the triangle shaped metal around the can edge! Now using a tuna can or chicken can you will cut cardboard in long sheets the height just about a 1/2 inch lower than the side of the can. Coil the cardboard in a spiral shape Loosely and place it in your can. Add your crisco or candle wax. Using crisco it would be a good idea to get one of those lids made especially for canned cat food to close it up after the can has cooled down. Now you can use the candle like a bunson burner turn the can on it’s open edge over the bunson burner. You will want to use a large flowerpot saucer over a trivet to place your candle & 3# can over it. You can use it for a light weight fry pan or a sauce pot.
Hi Cheri, what you are describing sounds like a Rocket Stove. My professor Dean Stihl was down in Kenya at one point building these for families. Isn't alternative technology fun? Cheers!
Thank you for noticing. I like quirky hacks that actually work. Please take the time to look through your house to see what you can use. If you do not have anything then consider buying some items new or from second hand stores. Cheers!
Hi Crystal, that is so funny that my Dollar Store meals made you hungry. I can give a very positive report on these meals, and they are much tastier than the MRE meals that I tried in my Livestream. Also, they are way cheaper. Cheers!
Thank you for sharing! I really liked the first burner and thought the grill actually came with it. They missed that ingenious design! I make coffee can rocket stoves and have created videos showing how to use a roll of toilet paper and 3 tuna cans and make 3 sterno type burners with various fuels. I have yet to try to make one with Crisco and I think that will be one of my next videos!

1992, shortly after I got married, my hubby was a Marine. We were stationed in NC and had an ice storm hit. Right across the street was the city. They had power back within 36 hours. The base? Nearly a week! I'm from Northern Michigan. I collect candles. I nailed towels over our bedroom window to keep warmth in. I placed candles all over the room and lit them. My hubby made fun of me for my "candle obsession" but he came home from work and walked into that warm room with a hot pizza the second night we were without power and never made fun of me again. During the day, I moved the towels so the sunlight would put heat in the house. When the sun started dropping, I would cover the window and light candles. I never thought about putting my cooling rack over my pot with candles for cooking. Now? Yep. I keep terra cotta pots for putting a candle underneath for the residual heat and I keep candles for putting in my dutch over with my cooking rack over. I am in Florida now so not much fear of ice storms, but being able to cook some rice or pasta during the power outage from a hurricane is a nice option! I still collect candles too. Just in case. 🙂
I have a camp stove and propane, I need to get sterno, I have camped before ,so that experience has taught me things. I have battery operated fans, stocked up on batteries too. I expect brown outs this summer. Set the A/C at 80 degrees, in the house. My fireplace does wood and gas. I have had solar panels on the roof for 10 years. Also gave no cook ready to eat meals in the pantry. Battery powered camp lantern. Candles, the shades are all drawn in the house and curtains are closed to keep the sun out.
Hi Kelsi, it does not hurt to be prepared, and please try out food with your preferred stove so that you will know what to do when it is a stressful situation. Good luck, Cheers!

wonderful ideas to help a lot of people, thanks from Canadian dairy farmer's daughter.

This is the best video about cooking ideas for emergency...can't wait to get started...thank you
I’m so glad you’re ready for a power outage, Cheers!
I recommend practicing your chosen method of emergency cooking before you need it -- so you don't run into any surprises. Adding the element of romance is a bonus.
Hi James, YES please practice preparedness and safe sex during the element of romance. Cheers!
I used a ferro rod to light my alcohol stove and spilled the alcohol everywhere. Learned a lot from that 😬
@@no_peace Ouch! Harsh as that was, better now than in an emergency, and I'm sure that is your point. Thanks for the timely lesson.
I thought I was clever, the way I used my fondue pot stand with my coffee percolator and frying pan, but you just kicked it up a notch! Thanks for all the ideas!
Hi Rachel, it is fun to see all of the different things you already own and can use in an emergency. Cheers!

I live in South Florida; hurricane preparedness is vital.
I will not use propane or charcoal (family member accident)
For years I have used the sterno
cooking fuel - fast, can be used indoors, reusable.
With power out for nearly 2 weeks, hot coffee, decent meals every day while our neighbors ran out of propane & charcoal.
We had run out of bread,no convenience of a store.
Had a box of bread mix -
took pavers from the garden & cookie rack to make an oven.
Placed 2 stereo on bottom & just let bread bake Nothing like fresh homemade bread, peanut and jelly with hot soup!
Love this, thanks for sharing. Cheers!
Do u buy sterno fuel at hardware stores? Thanks for sharing this vital info…both of you! 🙏🏼
Dollar Stores carry it, Cheers!
@@NinthElement Thank you 😊
Awww that’s where canning come in to play, nice homemade meals in emergency 💯💪🙏
Put a lid on your grilled cheese. Keeps the heat for the cheese to melt more completely.
Cheers!
Is fancy flame the same as sterno fuel? 😬
Yes!
I love that blue cat plate, so cute
Thank you Susan, it was a gift from my friend. Cheers!
I like the music.. Oh! your information is very helpful. Thanks!
Glad that you found it helpful.
Great tips and childhood stories. Thank you, Cheers!

I use tea candles ..placed the tea candle under a metal candle holder..placed a small pot on top of the metal candle holder and warmed up my food..
We in Ireland have also been warned of power outages this winter..thank you Mindy for your tips..stay safe and warm ❤☘

You are so welcome! I hope that you are enjoying my other videos too. More to come, Cheers!
If you put a lid on the pan it would take less time and actually brown faster
Really enjoyed your video. Great ideas. My suggestion is that you could use tent pegs to thread into your utensil holder stove to lift up a smaller sterno or fancy heat can. Someone else mentioned a can to put inside to lift up your gel fuel can. So many creative ideas.
Rosie, thank you for this tip. I went out to the Tubes and investigated this. Cool hack idea. Thank you, Cheers!
Cheers!
Yeah sounds good.
Cheers!
Thank you so much...Jesus is Lord
Namaste' Cheers!
Cheers!
Thank you. Though we all need some more sustainable meals.
Another reason why I have a charcoal and gas grill

Oats don’t really need to be cooked. Overnight oats are great. If you want them warm, add warmed milk to the bowl.
True, but this is a video that shows how to cook during a power outage.
Personally, I do not like the taste of soaking oatmeal overnight, do you?
I use my thermos for cooking oatmeal. Oatmeal and hot water in the thermos takes about 40 minutes or so...time it takes to walk my dog.
@@sharonbeckmon9837 to me, the taste is the same. The texture is slightly different, but I add in a lot of stuff, too.
@@hartmanartsource I'm a Malt-o-meal kinda guy but hot oat meal and butter is darn good too..
I looked, "coghlan pot stand" gets a bunch of promising results on amazon
Thank you, I will look into this and possibly try it. Cheers!

Have you heard about using a wonderbag for cooking without power, you need to check it out on you tube on how to make one . 😀
Hi Dora, this is an awesome question. I went to an Off-Grid Internship in 1998. One of the ways we cooked food was with a Hay Box. They are pretty simple to make and they do work. The Wonderbag is a cute modern version of the old school one. Thank you for asking me this question, I am going to check out the Wonderbag. Cheers!

Cheers!
@@krisqueen5939 Thanks, I'll try that .
And now this word from our sponcers.

Ellie those are great tips. Please continue to share your wise nuggets of wisdom. Cheers!
It makes everything that needs "cooked with milk" taste sooooooo much better ❣️
I keep powdered whole milk in my kitchen since I hardly ever need a lot of milk. The brand is Nido and is in the Latin section of the supermarket.

You are so welcome. I enjoy breaking things down to simple. Being prepared is not that hard, and most of us have basic stuff to get us through for a few days. Stay sweet and safe. Cheers!
This is such a great story and comment. Thank you for sharing what "IS" possible. Cheers!
