For me, Cat goes through stages similar to a feral cat "adopting" owners. Season 1, he just happens to wander around and get food from them and come and go as he pleases without even the glimmer of a thought of the people unless they're doing something amusing. He lets Lister sit sick on the floor possibly dying because it's lunchtime. He only shows up to Lister's quarters for Crispy Mix and disappears for days at a time. Season 2, he's still standoffish, but he's more curious about what the others are doing and more likely to participate (possibly because events like what happened in Queeg show that what they do can affect his ability to get food). In S2, he's still standoffish, but he's still always around. Reminds me of my cats when they're angry at me because I went on vacation. There's no affection when I come home for several days away and they pointedly do NOT pay attention to me as they follow me from room to room not letting me out of their eyesight, always with a look of "I wanted to hang out in the bathroom, it just so happens you needed to go at the same time I felt like examining the bathtub." He doesn't really become a crew member as such until S3, which means it's taken him that long to warm up to them. I mean can you imagine S1 Cat strapping on a bazookoid and going down to the cargo decks with Rimmer and Kryten to hunt the polymorph? "Aww, the monkey got hurt? So sad. Wake me when it's my problem. *pushes Lister out of the medibay's bed, then curls up to nap*" But by S4, he's standing right beside Lister ready to face the 5000 Series mechanoid to protect Kryten. "Hey, these are MY monkeys! You can't hurt them unless *I* say so, get me?"
it felt kind of jarring when he switched to being a much more serious crew member in season 6 (I think 6, the one on the starbug) which was also the season that leaned on running gags a lot. though, given he's still a sapient being, maybe he just developed a sense of consequences and knew he wouldn't survive if he didn't help out
Fun fact, the creation of Cat was due to the writers deciding they needed another character for the show, but wanted to avoid the cliché of it being either a robot or an alien, but still non-human.
We used to call walks the W-word since saying walk sent our dogs into a bouncing frenzy. We had to change it again later when they figured out what it meant. Dogs are not stupid.
Dogs can understand one and two syllable words, hence they can quickly realise the actions associated with one syllable words like "bath" and "walk" what you need to do is use words with three syllables then they wont have a clue.
The first word I learned to spell was “walk” because my parents would always spell it out when asking each other if they wanted to take our dog for one.
One of the things that always amazes me, is the costume designer for most of Red Dwarf's run Howard Burden is such a genius getting more and more ridiculous and awesome costumes for cat on such a tiny budget.
Omg they NEED to do that!!! I doubt it tho because in series 11 episode 6 Can of worms, the Cat species are featured quite a bit, but that was probably the biggest cat episode that happened so he deserves it and it isn't as is anyone wouldn't like it! Lister messing with Cat has another layer, when he says "they're about 18 feet long with teeth as big as your leg", that kind of what a more larger dog would be like for a normal cat.
You know, I never thought about it but the Cat using nicknames for people makes perfect sense since that's what they're doing to him: calling him "cat" instead of whatever his real name is. Treating them the way they treat him.
About the spraying part, originally I thought they might have intended it to be pee, but it just seemed weird to me to imagine the Cat spraying everything he liked with that, especially since he likes his outfits so much and I'm sure he definitely isn't going around smelling like that. I agree with you that it's more likely his aftershave or cologne.
Cat did once hiss in the digital edited version of the first episode. When Lister and Rimmer first encounter him and Cat says "I better make myself look big" they insert a cat's actual hiss when he does his feral pose. Also I think they edited his face a bit by adding darker skin tone patterns to emulate the fur patterns on a cats face.
These Cat retrospectives are so fun. I love how much personality Cat has and your spotlight on the fashion he wears makes me want to compile a compilation of favorites. I might be a fan of the classic series outfits cause I still really think the beautiful red coat with the black lapels and red vest he wears during the "this is mine" part is my favorite. (though that Cat belt is to die for, I think it's the perfect accessory for the Cat) And the one with the shiny white jacket with the black accents and tie, with shiny gold shirt is a close second. That part with the cat priest always kinda breaks my heart, man there are some times when this series could really walk the tightrope with balancing hilarity with morose subject matter (with a heaping helping of philosophy in the case of that particular episode). I actually have a story I've been working on since highschool with a talking cat who's adopted by my main character (who's a human), and ever since I started watching Red Dwarf I notice that I love the idea of making him kind of like the Cat, just if he were a kitten. I the silly way he reacts to things and I like the idea of emulating Cat's lisp from wearing the pointy teeth and his opinionated tastes. It's just a lot of traits that I noticed more about the actual cat animal after watching Red Dwarf pick up on and humanize the cat traits.
I'm glad people seem to be liking the "fashion" segments in these videos. I was a little worried people might find them tedious--doesn't help that my husband kind of tuned out during those parts when I had him pre-watch it with me =P
Cats clothing appears to be based on different flamboyant periods in time eg Versailles, the swing period of the mid 20th century and 50s British 'teddy boys' .
Danny wore his grandad's old Zoot suit it was as simple as that, it is based on the 1950's flash look like Cab Calloway. It was only series 3 they ditched that look and Howard Burden the costume designer got more creative.

It's cool seeing people from across the pond analyse British comedy like this. In the UK we get exposed to a lot of American TV that makes cultural references that go over our heads, as well as their use of language in general feeling a little off. We'll still enjoy the content either way. Glad you're able to do the same; there's a weird idea in the UK that Yanks don't get British humour. Also learned not so long ago that elsewhere in the world we're stereotyped as outright lacking a sense of humour. People immigrating to the UK with that stereotype in their minds are usually pleasantly surprised to see how dark and cynical our humour actually is, so perhaps we aren't brave enough to export it, or haven't the skills to adequately translate it.

Reiver, his name is - chiefly because his favourite food is whatever we are having. But Danny''s 'Cat' is seriously cute and well-turned-out on top of all that. He just can't be beaten; and I love Terry Farrell from being Jadzia. She worked hard to make this a difficult choice for me. There's something about his sheltered innocence that she just couldn't reproduce.
Not gonna argue the Cab Calloway influence, but I'd throw in Morris Day for timeliness. Though I'd suspect that Day was too influence by Calloway. I love what you do and I'm looking forward to further tales of Cat and his human sidekick.

Cat's reactions to the priest are a bit strange, but one thing I saw as his somber moment was when he started talking about his feet again. He grabs hold of Lister, starts talking about his investigating feet, and forcibly removed him from the room. It felt like a pretext to leaving the dead to rest in peace, parent talking to a small child about going to get ice cream while you lead them out of a hospital room. Probably reading too deeply, but that's what it felt like.
im surprised you managed to find so much to talk about with the cat spanning so many videos but im really enjoying the extra love for the character ^_^ i still think my favourite Cat moment is his justification for his existence before the Inquisitor! xD
If cat is sewing his own outfits I can understand why he would repeat outfits or have favourite patterns he reuses. I definitely do when I'm sewing my own. But as the cat increases his wardrobe he gets less repeats. Which is realistic as I'm finding similar with my wardrobe. I'm impressed with how he has mastered tailoring and sewing tricky materials. I wonder if he's got an overlocker hidden somewhere.
Interesting when you noted the similarities to the Pink Panther theme when Cat appears. I thought it mostly sounded like a jazzy version of the Red Dwarf theme...

5:55 Don't know if you've seen the Remastered Editions of Seasons 1-3, where they basically did the same as what George Lucas did with the Star Wars Special Editions. Anyways, the scenes where Cat makes himself look big in "The End" and "Parallel Universe", they added hissing sounds. Also in the Remastered version of "Waiting for God", they edited out the line at 8:40.

Which was your favourite book of the series? For me it was Better Than Life, just because they expanded on one concept and expanded it so much further.
I don't really have one. My experience with the books is that I listened to IWCD completely, then I started on Better Than Life and got bored with it, and after that I just never got around to going back to them.
They are the best two books for sure. I might be a bit biased as BTL did a whole It's A Wonderful Life bit, which is my favourite film. The last two books aren't that good though.
I like 'Backwards' the most just because i found it the most interesting and funny but i almost cried at the end of 'Last Human' after what happened to Rimmer and how he ended up sacrificing himself to save the others, it really showed a different side to Rimmer however I'm not a big fan of the first half of the book... i do love 'Better than Life' because of the same reason you said although i do love how 'Infinity welcomes careful drivers' as i love all the information about the Cat and his race and how he gets bored if you ask to many questions, SO CUTE !!!! Cat's my favourite too btw

Wow when you said you were doing a Cat video separate from RD I expected one instalment, then I see 5??? You really love this character don't you? And so do I but Ive never seen so much devotion to this member of the cast, its actually nice youre giving Danny this much credit as he did tend to get overshadowed by Craig and Chris in the show. I personally like Cat best in the first two seasons and a lot of fans were the same, from season 3 he stops acting like a cat so much presumably cos he's now living with humans.

Personally I think the way Cat acts like a jerk matters more so from an Experience stand point for some people, as some people may have cats that can act like jerks usually but that might be very rare, what is very common is them is they probably had a bad day so yeah I can see why it cat would act like an asshole but I like I said it matters more in a Experience stand point
I think it's appropriate to make special length videos for a special character ^-^ BTW the hair is the only thing that bugs me about cat. I mean it overall fits the character but I still can't consider it as something that's supposed to be »stylish«
Although I find your analysis interesting, British comedy isn't about consistency, continuity, overthinking, or over standing. Most of the continuity errors, nobody notices. We are just laughing at the jokes. The other thing is that most British comedy doesn't adapt well to foreign made versions, e.g. in the USA, etc. For all Red Dwarf fans, I'd advise getting the two/three disc versions of the series (seasons in the USA) for all the extras.

There are tons of fan theories that attempt to explain inconsistencies in the show, like Kochanski looking different between seasons, for example. 6 nipples doesn't have to mean 6 full-on breasts, IMO. As with the male version of Cat, I assume that the other 4 were just nipples that you can't see through her clothes.

If cat is sewing his own outfits I can understand why he would repeat outfits or have favourite patterns he reuses. I definitely do when I'm sewing my own. But as the cat increases his wardrobe he gets less repeats. Which is realistic as I'm finding similar with my wardrobe. I'm impressed with how he has mastered tailoring and sewing tricky materials. I wonder if he's got an overlocker hidden somewhere.

Anyways, the scenes where Cat makes himself look big in "The End" and "Parallel Universe", they added hissing sounds. Also in the Remastered version of "Waiting for God", they edited out the line at 8:40.

Which was your favourite book of the series? For me it was Better Than Life, just because they expanded on one concept and expanded it so much further.
I don't really have one. My experience with the books is that I listened to IWCD completely, then I started on Better Than Life and got bored with it, and after that I just never got around to going back to them.
They are the best two books for sure. I might be a bit biased as BTL did a whole It's A Wonderful Life bit, which is my favourite film. The last two books aren't that good though.
I like 'Backwards' the most just because i found it the most interesting and funny but i almost cried at the end of 'Last Human' after what happened to Rimmer and how he ended up sacrificing himself to save the others, it really showed a different side to Rimmer however I'm not a big fan of the first half of the book... i do love 'Better than Life' because of the same reason you said although i do love how 'Infinity welcomes careful drivers' as i love all the information about the Cat and his race and how he gets bored if you ask to many questions, SO CUTE !!!! Cat's my favourite too btw

Wow when you said you were doing a Cat video separate from RD I expected one instalment, then I see 5??? You really love this character don't you? And so do I but Ive never seen so much devotion to this member of the cast, its actually nice youre giving Danny this much credit as he did tend to get overshadowed by Craig and Chris in the show. I personally like Cat best in the first two seasons and a lot of fans were the same, from season 3 he stops acting like a cat so much presumably cos he's now living with humans.
Eating too much and puking is something my cat does. Going back and eating that later is also something she will do.

Personally I think the way Cat acts like a jerk matters more so from an Experience stand point for some people, as some people may have cats that can act like jerks usually but that might be very rare, what is very common is them is they probably had a bad day so yeah I can see why it cat would act like an asshole but I like I said it matters more in a Experience stand point

Although I find your analysis interesting, British comedy isn't about consistency, continuity, overthinking, or over standing.
Most of the continuity errors, nobody notices.
We are just laughing at the jokes.
The other thing is that most British comedy doesn't adapt well to foreign made versions, e.g. in the USA, etc.
For all Red Dwarf fans, I'd advise getting the two/three disc versions of the series (seasons in the USA) for all the extras.

Um, a lot of fans I've heard from would say otherwise. There are tons of fan theories that attempt to explain inconsistencies in the show, like Kochanski looking different between seasons, for example. Red Dwarf may be a British comedy, but it's also a sfi-fi show, which is a genre that lends itself to fan speculation about how things work.
If he has 6 nipples, I don't think USA Cat Mk2 is anatomically correct.
6 nipples doesn't have to mean 6 full-on breasts, IMO. As with the male version of Cat, I assume that the other 4 were just nipples that you can't see through her clothes.
