Doctor Who: All the Strange, Strange Creatures (1960s)

  • Here it is! My first attempt at re-creating the sound of 1960s Doctor Who, in the form of All the Strange, Strange Creatures.
There's heavy drums, organs, sine wave generators (or some approximation of them), clav-esque sounds, spooky woodwinds, muted French horns, and pots and pans for some more percussion. I looked into the work of several composers of the period and these were the most consistent themes I found across the examples I looked at.
I'm aware there's a fraction of a second after my obligatory 'funny' clip that I've added to the previous two versions of these videos (you'll know it when you see it) where there is a black screen. That's my fault, I extracted the clip from youtube and forgot to edit that part out.
Also included a nod to the great Karkus from the Mind Robber, as he featured in an ongoing comic in the NZDWFC’s fanzine, TSV.
I've avoided using animations for the music video, they're bound to be copyright flagged and they detract too much from the style of the music video anyway.
    Enjoy!
    Sheet music by dandalf.

Having the iconic shadow of the caveman at the end of An Unearthly Child right at the end is just the best.

Considering YANA is a variant of this song, I could imagine this track being used in The War Games when we see the Time Lords for the first time.

The amount of restraint it took to not use any Daleks (and barely any Cybermen!) is impressive. I'm not sure if this particularly sounds 60s-ish, but I enjoyed it very much. I'm woefully behind on watching Classic Who, but I'll always have a soft spot for the Hartnell era.

Yeah the problem with a track like this is that it just wouldn’t have appeared in 60s Who. So the goal was to use the kinds of instruments/sounds typical of the time.

@@hellsw0rth The biggest issue to me is that it's a lot of staccato notes and the melodies and rhythms are very complex. I think if you simplified them into legato parts, it'd help a lot. For example, with the main melody, instead of "dadada, diddy dadada" it's just a longer "daaa, da naaa, da naaa", etc.

I don't really think it sounds very 60s, but that's also just because the music in the 60s was absolutely insane
(See the weird drum soundtrack in The Dalek Invasion of Earth for my favourite example)
As its own piece though, I think it's an awesome reinterpretation. Always enjoy your work

    • @hellsw0rth
      @hellsw0rth  5 місяців тому +6

Thank you! The drums you mention for Dalek Invasion are why I went for heavy drums in mine. And the clav sound is from The Invasion. You’re right, the music is too atmospheric to translate a track like this directly. When I made notes of the soundtrack to the Daleks, I wrote “whistle” and “wind” which don’t quite fit this. But then they used stock music for half of season 4 so it was all over the place.
In the end, I just went for the sounds of the 60s rather than the style itself.

Well done 👍 it can be quite easy to take an old tune and give it a modern feel, but not so easy to take a modern tune and give it that classic feel, I think you got the sound right for it, but it’s the tune itself that’s too modern in its pacing to sound like it’s from that era, but I appreciate your effort, well done mate ❤❤

Now I imagine a musical arrangement of the soundtrack in Classical Doctor Who. Like it could have been in an epic arc like a trailer or actual scene in the "Three" or "Five Doctors" episodes or "the Dalek Invasion of Earth" episode.
Edit: Great effort in pulling it through,
