    In France Veja’s are basically the go-to sneakers of the people we call « bobo » (can be translated by bohemian upperclass?). As a 20 year-old sneakerhead (but I stopped buying because of environmental issues, I have enough pairs) 130€ is comparable to what Nike and Adidas is doing for the main line so I don’t really consider them as luxury but rather not cheap.
    As you mention there definitely is a social status associated to Veja but I believe in some circles it is quite negative (lots of people see them as Parisians that don’t know the reality of life outside of city and rule the lives of farmers while not having stepped in dirt once)
    Maybe the way to change that is to embrace other designs to touch via their products rather than the impact of the V, as it isn’t universal as Nike or Adidas

      I live in Paris too, and I confirm Veja is typically worn by the basic generic Parisian bobo that is somewhat close minded and really influencable by the upper class paradigm.
      I usually roast some of my friends that are trying to buy better designed and more creative sneakers by calling them Veja heads lmao. But it's all love and fun tho. People can wear whatever rock their boat, but I feel like Veja is kinda suffering the Alexander McQueen treatment . Like you can have decent products but the core of their client is really considered annoying and arrogant, so that makes a lot of people dislike the product because of that.

      @lucas_lbn483 10 місяців тому +3

      @@paprikafinesser Lol I forgot about those Alexander McQueens dudes indeed!
      Maybe it's some typical French behavior of judging and caring almost more of who is wearing rather than the product in itself (same goes in music/ films/ art) but it definitely limits the impact of the brand on the people who may not be enough sensibilized on sustainability

    i live in brazil, and first pair i got was in 2017 i think (still have it). got it in a small slow fashion shop. their whole marketing here is designed in France, made in brazil. it was very converse-like (the model). But here, because of import taxes and stuff, it ends up being around the same price as adidas, nike and others (which are considered luxury here). I literally just realized this brand was like a thing this week. and in Portuguese we pronounce the j not as an r.

      Levi is pronouncing the name incorrectly. The brand name, as spoken by their own founders, is basically the pronounciation we have in Portuguese: Veja [veʒɐ].

    Thank you for this video.
    I know this brand for a while but don't possess any shoes. I kinda disagree with the fact that those are "luxury shoes". Buying shoes between $150 and $250 is not cheap I agree (especially if you compare to second-hand), but it's a regular price for ethical shoes. And even is I buy most of my stuff second-hand, some people need to buy new and support those brands for them to survive (we see so many good and ethical brands die just because they don't sell enough... that's the law of business).
    I feel like in your video, it's a bad thing that celebrities wear those shoes, and that the brand has success. I think it's the total opposite: promoting an ethical brand that has done a lot of efforts (even before ethical fashion was a trend), is a good thing. And even if "rich people" buy those shoes for the style and the image, it's better than to buy Nike.
    It's good that you make more videos about good and ethical brands, but those video don't always need to have so much "yes, but" if ethic is at the core of the brand 😉

    I got my pair of Vejas in 2020 because they were one of the few environmentally friendlier sneakers available, and honestly I LOVE them. They’re the shoes I wear when I don’t know what else to wear because they go with everything & are very comfortable. The leather makes them very water resistant, almost waterproof, so they’re my pseudo rain shoes as well. They were so worth the price I paid, even if they were initially slightly pricier!

    From what I can tell, they’re basically very similar designs to old school models from the big companies like the Nike Blazer, Nike Air Force One, and the Jordan 1, but at the same price point as a Made in America New Balance 990. I’ll admit to being intrigued; it honestly depends on how the leather is colored. If it’s coated in a thicc layer of plastic like most big shoe brands that use colorful leather, I’m less inclined to get them since that will not last very long, but if they’re simply coated in pigment instead… I am more interested.

They seem to be a genuinely ethical brand (per Good On You giving them an overall "Good" score) with a lot of cool partnerships that appeal to gamers, art fans, etc. Also mostly based out of Brazil (as far as I'm aware) and more/less deserve their own video as an alternative to Veja that's about 1/2 the cost 👀. Levi, let's make one thing very clear, shall we?
    There is absolutely nothing wrong with spoiling ourselves from time to time with a new pair of shoes even when you could theoretically buy a second hand pair from a thrift store.
    Even more so when the brand is environmentally and ethically decent.
    There is no need to be calvinist about it. I you planned on buying twenty, that would be another matter. Let's find a virtuous middle ground, shall we?

    I owned a pair and really wanted to make them work. But the outer sole was so thin that my heels were in agony after walking for more than 15 minutes. I finally parted with them when the fabric between the outer sole and the inside of the shoe ripped and the smell of the rubber just lingered once you took the shoes off. Bought this pair in 2020; maybe they have improved by now.

    I just bought my second pair , I have the running shoes and the normal ones. I actually wanted to buy them second hand in a very popular second hand app in Germany, Vinted, but I was scammed there. Everyone wants to buy them so scammers use the app to post fake pictures and “sell” the shoes and never send them. Really sad. 😢 but the shoes are very good quality indeed. Thanks for the video very informative, like always. 😊 when I saw the title I was praying that the result of your research wasn’t that the brand was not as sustainable as it says.

    I had my first pair of Veja (Esplar) in 2018 for 80€ and until now they are good. They are not really very comfortable, imho. But they are my go-to-shoes for short errands for almost 6 years.
    I got my second pair (V-12) two years ago as a gift, and I love them so much (super comfortable) I almost wear them everyday until a little stitching went loose on the shoe folds. I got them repaired for free in a Veja Store last November and now they’re good as new!😃 Veja offers Clean and Repair Service for a fee and sometimes for free during Black Friday.
    I wear them because I feel comfortable in them. I don’t have so many sneakers (only 3 pairs) so I buy what I think will hopefully last.

    In high school, I purchased a pair of gym shoes from Payless. All plastic and virtually indestructible, still had them years after I married and wore them around the cattle and horses I fed and rode every day. They never wore out! Finally, after having my daughter, they got a bit uncomfortable cause my shoe size changed. Should have had them bronzed, you know, plastic fantastic.

      @aesthetiquemoon 10 місяців тому +5

      i'm saying this because i understand your comment to be praise of an "all plastic" shoe that is "virtually indestructable". them being long-lasting isn't the only or even most important quality about them. it is what happens after they stop lasting that is worth looking at: are they recyclable? can the plastic actually be meaningfully renewed within our give recyclingsystems? is the material sustainably sourced, not just in an environmental sense but also a sociological sense.
      i'm happy you made so many good memories in those shoes, but as informed consumers there is better options than an all plastic shoe.

      @@aesthetiquemoon Oh no, no, I was actually making fun of them, and how they just wouldn't die! I shudder to think of all the those Payless sneakers lasting forever in a dump somewhere. Because those shoes lasted so long it just goes to prove that we have to be aware of just what we're doing when we're buying this type of footwear. I live in Louisiana and we are really feeling the effects of climate change here and it's scary. So far our summer was 90 degree days in June! And now it's been 100 degree days in July and August. It's been unrelenting, and also we've experienced droughts for the first time in the last 5 years, which is unheard of this close to Lake Maurepas where we live. I miss the days when we had afternoon showers every day in summer to cool things down, and we never had such hot summers. We've sure made a mess of this and I hope it's not too late to try and change it. As usual, another great video! ❤

      @SherryAnnOfTheWest 10 місяців тому

      @@aesthetiquemoon you can donate running shoes of any brand to Nike and they will grind 'em up and make running tracks out of them. The "Grind Program." I don't know if they take "plastic" shoes.
      For $129, TerraCycle will send you a box measuring 11 x 11 x 20 inches (larger boxes are also available).
      You can fill the box with used shoes of any kind-running shoes included, of course-and then you use the prepaid label to send the box back.
      After they receive your box, they strip the shoes to separate the materials by type (rubber, foam, plastics, fabrics, etc.), and then repurpose them or recycle them accordingly.

    Sneakers don’t have to be a non reparable product meant to throw away. The swiss brand Künzli makes sneakers (beside of orthopedic shoes for people with injuries, etc.) that actually can be repaired and are repaired by the makers. My husband got a pair of sneakers from them more than 15 years ago. They have been repaired a few times now and still look good. They are not on the cheap side, although they are not produced in Switzerland anymore. Still they are made in Europe with sustainable materials and can last for many many years if cared for and repaired.
