I have found ultra running can get more stessful the better you get at it depending on your competitiveness. When I first started, I was happy to finish and hit decent time...now, I'm doing like you for some and expecting to place. This causes way more mental stress and really you dont have control over the competition that shows up, so you just have a plan and stick with it and hope for improvement.
I'm in the process of making some videos on the topic. Pretty much running 50 to 60 miles per week and a good amount of cross training. I'm aiming to have some videos posted in the next few weeks that go over my training philosophy and what sort of cross training I do.
