After a decent start to the year, Checo has followed it up with 3 absolute howlers in a row. This pattern seems awfully familiar... let's talk about it.

Checo fans, genuine question. Are you enjoying his Red Bull era, now that we're over 3 years deep? Do you not think he'd be showing a better, happier version of himself, outside of this team? Given how unpleasant 2020 was for me, as an Albon fan - I do somewhat empathize. At least Sergio has managed a few wins, same can't be said for Alex... 😅😢😭

I was stunned when he was announced as a red bull driver back in 2020 (finally, after years, he was in a top team). But he being no longer the lead driver is hard to swallow every year since then. But, although he has had some stinkers (Basically all of the second part of 2023 and this 2024 Q1 exit streak), I would never change those magic moments where I was yelling to the tv, while he was leading the monaco gp back in 2022, Azerbaijan 2023 when he hold off Max, 2021 when Hamilton did outbreak himself... But 2023 and now 2024 are damaging his image as a racing driver heavily. I say this as a mexican, and as a checo fan.

Hear me out: RB doesn’t care about winning the constructors championship, only the drivers championship. Everyone remembers that Max won the championship in 2021 in a RB, but nobody cares that Merc won the constructors. Winning the drivers championship gives the team more notoriety, and the only upside to winning the constructors is more prize money, which RB can offset with Perez’s sponsorship money. Even if they finish 3rd in the constructors that’s around $24M lost when surely Checo brings in more than that from sponsors and merch sales
Edit: Forgot to mention finishing lower in the constructors also means more wind tunnel testing allocation🙃

But considering that Ferrari, McLaren and potentially Mercedes are catching up rapidly and locking in top tier drivers for both seats for the next few years, resigning someone that basically is nothing more than a capable midfield driver for TWO YEARS is not a smart decision strategically.
I know fumbling Alonso must have hurt, and given the tension between Max and Carlos in their TR days, I understand RBR weren't too keen on putting them back together. Albon literally told that max likes the car sharper which no other driver can drive, so that explains why 2nd redbull driver struggles. Starting of the year its a balanced car so checo also does good and as we go down the season the car becomes more sharper like how max wants it hence, checo starts to struggle a lot.

Not necessarily it’s more that the sharper front end Max likes makes Max quicker. The other driver be it Albon, like he explained, or Checo will then feel pressure to be quicker also. Then comes the ability to handle such a set up and Max over classes them.

So my first thought on Checo being signed: Red Bull don't entirely care all that much about the constructors, they have the fastest car yet he is 5th, he is going out in Q1's every now and then. They are basically saying well we are banking on the fact that the 2-3 teams behind us stay close together and keep taking points from each other.
Second thought: They might have been thinking well what else do we do. All the drivers who are definitely better than Perez are already signed to other teams, except for Sainz. So then instead of taking a risk on those who are available and comparable at least (I personally think Albon and Gasly are better for example) why don't we keep the ton of sponsorship money, current harmony and maybe he gets back to his actual form again. In the meanwhile let Lawson grow next year and exercise the +1 option if needed.
Then on other options, we don't know how much was discussed between them and Sainz or who led to the discussion not going forward. Just like how they might have preferred to not have some butting of heads (understandable) Sainz might have been the one who ended it. Maybe he wanted something too long or too expensive.

It then starts to make sense why his leash is so long at Red Bull. The backing of an entire country, and sponsorships galore? What's that compared to performance? Nothing, apparently.
Honestly? They shoulda gotten Danny Ric into the Red Bull LAST YEAR. Not because he necessarily deserves it, but just to get something different in the door. He would honestly perform similar to Checo (maybe marginally better), and then AT LEAST we could get Lawson in an RB and not stall the entirety of their junior program.

  • @KingWeir
    @KingWeir 16 днів тому +1

    There are two main issues.
Firstly (and honestly the main issue, as it also just adds to 2nd problem), is that Red Bull is built to be the best that it can be and Max is such a good driver, he can make it work, which is why he's dominated. Every season, especially the earlier seasons of these rules, Checo has driven well but as they push the car more and more to be quick, only Max is able to drive it.
IF Max also struggled, then they would design a car that was driveable first and quick second but since Max can drive it, its forced onto Perez to try and adapt.
You hear it all the time at other teams, literally Ferrari's main design objective this year, was to make the car more predictable for the drivers, so they could maximise its potential.
Perez just isnt as good as Max, no offensive to Checo, he is actually a very good driver, he's probably one of the best "paid" drivers to ever grace the grid.
And for a mid-table team, he's perfect, obviously brings sponsors but is a good enough driver to lead the team and reliable enough to pretty much always bring home some points, is ability to do crazy long stunts on tyres, able to bring home some surprise finishing places as well.
But all of that is based on him driving a car that is built with him in mind as well and in an environment where there isn't as so much pressure to perform, yes he was alot younger but we also saw this at Mclaren, where at times the pressure got to him, so much so, even had Jenson on the radio, telling him to calm down on one occasion.
So put him in Alpine or Haas or whatever and he'd have great races again I bet, without that pressure to perform week in week out.
So what Red Bull need, is a driver that can either drive anything and those are rare talents. LH in his younger days (out driving the Mclaren in the 09 season comes to mind) or Fernando Alonso who just seems to be to ring the neck out of whatever machine he's given (also his Honda days with Mclaren come to mind).
But of course a talent like that would also threaten Max and Red Bull clearly don't want that headache again, after Vettel, Webber days.
So they are going to have to try and build a car that is also driveable for their No.2 driver, as we've already seen, Gasly, Albon, Perez etc decent drivers, drivers capable of leading other teams, struggle horribly at Red Bull of late.

It really doesn't take minutes or hours of discussion. If they keep Checo, they lose no money by losing the constructor's championship, but gain wind tunnel time. RB20 is not always the fastest car on the grid, in fact it's rarely, but I would be willing to bet my life that it's the pointiest and least forgiving. Albon's interview about when he was Max's teammate mention that specifically and here we are mid-season again where upgrades make the car even pointier and more to Max's insane twitch reflexes and every year it gets harder for Checo to stay near the podium. Edit, your idea about tossing Lawson in the RB20 is great. Until you get another young talent who can grow into the car, the 2nd seat will always be near-impossible. But you get into the catch-22 of RB rarely letting anyone have a chance.

This is tragically starting to feel a lot like the end of Danny Ric's time at McLaren. Decent guy, great sponsorships, has had some amazing races and wins in the past, but the sun seems to be setting on his successes at least in the lens of that Red Bull. Checo has had time to acclimate and it just doesn't fly in F1 if you're always just blaming the car, or you're saying "we'll figure it out," or "if only I hadn't done that move," when there is another driver able to extract something from the same car that you can't seem to do consistently enough. We are fond of saying these days that with the cost cap, there are no more paid drivers, but realistically with the sponsorship money for both Riccardo and Checo, it's a huge portion of why they are kept and have been kept in the sport. We're short changing rookies massively. Devries should not be the reason teams are shunning the potential of new drivers even at the big teams. We can't ever know how good these guys are if they aren't' actually allowed into the sport!

It took Merc losing a WDC to realize that Russel was someone they should have taken over Bottas. It will take a loss for RB to realize they need to make a change.
By then, it'll be too late.

  • @heystevehere

This is just anecdotal observation but: The RB18 and 19 were a sufficient balance of pace and lack of control - right on the edge of being too loose, but rapid into and out of the corners because of the late braking/sharp turn-in that Max requires. Sergio was probably the only driver so far to be able to handle (for the most part) that oversteer-y nature in the car. It looks like the RB20 isn't balanced in the same way. Still quick, but they've pushed the limit too far this time and even Max is struggling on certain tracks (especially those that have unforgiving kerbs that can upset the balance of the car).
Horner will be thinking that of all the second drivers they've had, Sergio has been the only one to keep a lid on that car for any sufficient number of races in the season, and putting another driver in that seat is a massive unknown.
Do I think Lawson would do a better job? Yes, but then I'm biased as a Kiwi motor racing fan.

like tommo said, the car is made to maxs needs. not discrediting him cause obviously hes an incredible driver but it does make it harder when the team doesnt take your needs into account. also the thing about "not knowing different" no one goes straight into a red bull so its hard for them to make the move.

I don’t think it’s that, it’s just that they try to make it as fast as possible, fast is often unstable, and Max is the only one that has the ability to extract that raw pace

11/27 were teammates, 27/55 were teammates. Their average pace is about the same level. So I don’t think switch 11 with 55 will make a difference.

Liam is still bit too green to trust him with the 2nd RBR seat, but his time will come. You eluded to the fact that no-one has been able to do well in the 2nd seat since Ricciardo, then the solution is staring you in the face, RICCIARDO. He is now getting back to what he was before moving to Renault, in a car that he is comfortable in and has been developing for the RB team, and Yuki has been getting the benefit of Dan's development. Dan would be a safe option to back up Max, and they get on well, and Max also knows he will not do a "Checo" on him like Checo did in Monaco a few years ago. If Dan goes well before the summer break and Checo keeps spiralling, then don't be surprised if Horner switches Dan and Checo, in desperation.

Tommo, I would like you to maybe look at the gaps in quali and average race pace gap. I think using average position doesn't really put the context that the field gap is much much lower since the 2022 regulation. I think I remember you can be 0.7s-1s off pole and only be p5, heck sometimes mercs are more than 1s ahead in the 2019 races. In AD 2019 Albon was 0.9s off pole in P6, only 0.5s off Max in P3 then Lando in P7 was 1.6s off pole, a 0.7s gap is crazy.

IMHO - I think the difference between drivers like Lewis and Max vs Bottas and Perez is the champs somehow extract performance on every track with variable set ups. With Bottas and Perez, it's up and down when it comes to consistency so they can start strong but there's inevitably a drop off.
