After a decent start to the year, Checo has followed it up with 3 absolute howlers in a row. This pattern seems awfully familiar... let's talk about it.

Checo fans, genuine question. Are you enjoying his Red Bull era, now that we're over 3 years deep? Do you not think he'd be showing a better, happier version of himself, outside of this team? Given how unpleasant 2020 was for me, as an Albon fan - I do somewhat empathize. At least Sergio has managed a few wins, same can't be said for Alex... 😅😢😭
ive been a fan of perez since maybe 2016 and honestly, i think his place in history is set now that he was max's most successful teammate, (i dont rate daniel ricciardo that much)
I’m not a Checo fan but I like the guy but it seems like he’ll forever play the supporting role to Max he doesn’t challenge him and he doesn’t make things for himself when he doesn’t even make it out of Q2 it’s like he’s accepted his fate cause I don’t see any passion from him
I was stunned when he was announced as a red bull driver back in 2020 (finally, after years, he was in a top team). But he being no longer the lead driver is hard to swallow every year since then. But, although he has had some stinkers (Basically all of the second part of 2023 and this 2024 Q1 exit streak), I would never change those magic moments where I was yelling to the tv, while he was leading the monaco gp back in 2022, Azerbaijan 2023 when he hold off Max, 2021 when Hamilton did outbreak himself... But 2023 and now 2024 are damaging his image as a racing driver heavily. I say this as a mexican, and as a checo fan.
I was so happy when Checo won his first race at Sakhir and even happier when he got the Redbull drive. But sadly he's never been confortable with the Redbull as he was with the Racing Point car. I feel he would have done much better with a Mercedes powered car.
been a fan ince 2012, i would have preferred him to go to audi honestly. He would have thrived there
The fact that Sainz is a point ahead of Perez, despite missing a race, and that Sargeant has out qualified Perez more than he has Albon, is insane.
As Logan’s no.1 hater, this is my favourite stat from this year 😂
How many races have Sainz, Sargeant and Albon won ?
@@ua697 Whats the point of winning races if you're behind in the championship table?
@@ua697 Blud don't act like Perez isn't being demolished 😭.
His teammate, even during off weekend isn't knocked out in Q1.
@@ua697 sometimes I forget how low IQ the average human is so it's nice to get a reminder
Hear me out: RB doesn’t care about winning the constructors championship, only the drivers championship. Everyone remembers that Max won the championship in 2021 in a RB, but nobody cares that Merc won the constructors. Winning the drivers championship gives the team more notoriety, and the only upside to winning the constructors is more prize money, which RB can offset with Perez’s sponsorship money. Even if they finish 3rd in the constructors that’s around $24M lost when surely Checo brings in more than that from sponsors and merch sales
Edit: Forgot to mention finishing lower in the constructors also means more wind tunnel testing allocation🙃
And, horners first priority was to keep Max. And the easiest way to do that is to give him the second driver that he wants. Kind of like Lewis and Bottas. See what happened when they put George in that seat? Lewis did not like that, to say the least.
@@robertreinecker9007Exactly, he brings in money and doesn’t take points away from Max so he stays happy. It’s sad to see but on paper it’s not a terrible model😂
Nobody remembers, the constructors - you're right. And certainly, those sponsors will plug a hole left by finishing 2nd instead of 1st as a team.
His crashes cost a lot of money which should be spend on development under the budget cap. Also showing every new floor after those accidents.
@@KneppaH Yeah he needs to stop crashing, but on the other hand any other driver would probably crash a decent amount with how pointy that car is and trying to keep up with Max, so RB may just accept it
Sometimes I miss Checo’s pre-Red Bull days where he would snuck in the occasional points and even podiums. He looked happier back then without all the pressure.
Cheers Tommo, great video! 🎉
I do believe he'd be showcasing a much more competitive version of himself, at most other teams.
I mean he does that now, just at Red Bull lmao
If he was not happy in rb why he want the 2 years contract tho ?
Sometimes i felt like the preassure more from the outside of rb rather than inside. Like ppl create this high expectation for checo. Even when he finish 2nd ppl still talk shit about the gap. So what ever he accomplished ppl still gonna find shit to talk about him. Also with all this jokes about him losing his seat, it just make tuings worst.
Also i think this what happen with gasly and albon too. The media and fans makes all this jokes and high standard for them. Even when these 2nd drivers do a great job, ppl still gonna compared them with max.
@@Duval-In-The-Wall lol 😭😂
@@adriannugraha9381 very true. He's got to be happy there or he'd have looked elsewhere or retired. He clearly misses his family 😟
Albon and Gasly were fired for less.
Perez is a solid midfield driver, but at Red Bull he makes their car look slower.
They were fired because better options were out there. That is not the case now with Perez
@@Duval-In-The-WallYuki would make less mistakes than him, Ricciardo was the only who can fight Max, Lawson looked promising (test him during the year for next year, just like they wanted it with Daniel when replaced De Vries), Sainz maybe wouldn't work because of their past
So if Perez continous this form I think these and other drivers would be better for the seat (currently not so much to worth the risk)
@@pasztorferenc6741 I like Yuki but no way he makes less mistakes, he's been driving around a B tier car for years and he's not about to hop into an Newey car and make it fly, if anything, he'll get air time from a crash into the barriers, if we keep on the wagon that this car is just too much for anyone other than Max, then Yuki will for sure cause the mechanics some major frustrations
@@pasztorferenc6741
Heavy doubt when it comes to Yuki, he tends to make errors when the pressure is on, and that second Red Bull seat is nothing but pressure
Taking into account the very tough nature of the RB20 (seriously, the VCARB looks easier to drive) I can see why Red Bull passed on him
Horner said that they axedAlbon too soon…. He regrets that decision. But AT THAT TIME THAT DECISION WAS MADE BY MARKO….Marko had 100% control over all 4 seats of RB Company.
Red bull singing another deal for Perez is the same as putting out a statement saying you never want to win another constructors championship
To put it bluntly, that's fine by me as a McLaren fan
Is that because Checo's sponsor backing is worth more to the team than the extra prize money + a 5% hit on their ATR? And if Checo can pull it around, they'll get both the prize money AND the sponsor bag?
@@TommoOnUA-camNot if he is crashing every race
@@TommoOnUA-camif that was the case, I wouldn’t be happy with that. Red bull aren’t a haas or Williams, and whilst I get f1 is expensive, I’m sure they’re pretty comfortable. The whole “put it all on max” philosophy that they seem to go with is showing that it’s not a plausible way forward, shown by them being outscored by both McLaren and Mercedes this weekend and being fortunate Ferrari brought the 2020 car. I personally think Sergio’s time is up.
@@TommoOnUA-cambecause they ain’t a manufacturer ….they are in for marketing…
Maybe worth pointing out that in their full seasons alongside Verstappen, Perez has achieved 55% of Max's points whereas Albon achieved a marginally higher 58%. The only Red Bull driver that has ever been close to Max is Ricciardo, back when Max wasn't an outright number one in the team.
Perez contract probably has more fine print than a Apple phone contract
Android > Apple btw
@@TommoOnUA-cam Good answer 😄
And nobody on RB wants to get stabbed or kidnapped at the Mexico GP. Checo is basically holding the team hostage.
hahahaha….brilliant analogy 😂
@@TommoOnUA-camwell now that just cost you billions in sponsor revenue! haha
As a checo fan, I appreciate that you acknowledge that it’s not just perez being washed is the problem.
I kinda wished he went to williams and became an underdog again
There's no way it's that straight forward. Perez was one of the drivers of the year in 2020, achieved all those podiums that Hulkenberg couldn't in a Force India. Alex & Pierre are clearly no mugs either, but something about that environment just isn't allowing these quality drivers to showcase said quality.
I predicted Perez to Williams a couple years back - him and Albon for 2025 would've been UNREAL for Williams. Shame.
Hopefully sainz becomes the underdog he has been forever and goes to williams
@@TommoOnUA-cam you’re so much more sensible than f1 twitter haha. Those guys make me lose hope in life
why, so he could get hosed by albon, a driver he replaced? bear in mind that the pace of albon in his 2nd season in a rb16 was nearly identical to that of perez in a rb16b when both are compared to max. williams would be career suicide
@@TommoOnUA-cam It's so weird, there isn't a driver on the second red bull car that can be consistent. And yet these same drivers go to other teams and do just fine. Red Bull and Verstappen must be some kind of pressure cooker or the car is made entirely for Max and his driving style be hella weird
Yeah it was shocking that they gave him a contract extension. If as people are saying "Carlos is too close to Max and Red Bull don't want a competition" then just give the seat to Yuki man..
And I don't even think Carlos would be THAT close to Max, Carlos would be consistent but Max would probably beat him pretty easily. Perez's is only there because of his sponsors and merch sales.
@@SamuelSantos_ carlos is clearly not on max's consistency but he has his good days and he'll definitely take wins and points from max but challenge him for championship is another thing
@@kenzabel5394 Yep, Sainz would be a Rosberg to Max, 8/10 Max will win but all it takes is a bit of luck and an almost ruined relationship and Sainz could beat Max.
Rosberg almost destroying his marriage to beat Lewis is the dedication you need to beat a GOAT and he only won because of Hamilton's reliability issue.
1) Carlos won’t be too close to Max
2) Yuki is not good enough for Red Bull
@@JuicedOnKids
He’s barely even a Rosberg to Leclerc let alone Max. 15-7 is their average quali battle
The only real aid here is that the pack immediately behind Max are so competitive that they pull points off of each other where Checo isn’t doing that. Still doesn’t add to the tally for Red Bull as a constructor, but Lando, Oscar, Russel, Hamilton, Leclerc and Sainz just pilfer from one another…
Perez just looks worse because the grid is so tight. Back with the W11, 3-4 tenths meant you still start in the top 4 or even second
Now? You’re 14th
@@Duval-In-The-Wall14th is 14th
I totally agree that Christian was hoping that Ricciardo would go off on a banger and show that he is consistent and capable of being back in the Red Bull and as a massive Ricciardo fan it sucks that he’s in the position hes in knowing full well he has the talent to be in the 2nd seat for Red Bull currently. You can tell when he qualified P5 in Canada he was shocked and didnt know if he should be happy or not and his tone was very unconfident in himself and it really seems like to me that his confidence is still not there. I hope that this race at Canada is the start for something new for Ricciardo and hopefully if he can keep this up for the rest of the year consistently then there definitely is an argument to be made and Christian will for sure be looking at that and saying “Okay now we have a decision to make”
I just wish to see him trying out that RedBull, even just for a race
I believe Alex can take Williams from a back of the grid team to consistently being a midfield contender. As an American, I love Logan but Alex needs much more support then what Logan is providing currently.
hes just tryna make the constructors intersting
Ever the entertainer.
Sad seeing Checo get the seat over Carlos
Perhaps, but knowing that Carlos favours a more understeery car than Charles - are you confident he'd be able to do a significantly better job than Checo? Especially in that stiff, pointy RB20?
@TommoOnUA-cam It can't get anywhere as bad as Perez has been regardless
I don’t think there’s much evidence Sainz would fare better or well in the Red Bull
@@TommoOnUA-camNo but I’m a Sainz fan
@@TommoOnUA-cam
People who think Sainz can challenge Verstappen are in for a VERY rude awakening
Sainz is lucky Perez exists because otherwise he’d be the main story, he’s been shambolic the last 4 rounds
I'm not completely damning their decision to resign Checo.
But considering that Ferrari, McLaren and potentially Mercedes are catching up rapidly and locking in top tier drivers for both seats for the next few years, resigning someone that basically is nothing more than a capable midfield driver for TWO YEARS is not a smart decision strategically.
I know fumbling Alonso must have hurt, and given the tension between Max and Carlos in their TR days, I understand RBR weren't too keen on putting them back together. But given that some madly talented drivers are without a seat and Yuki Tsunoda seems to be damned to fumble around in the junior team until Honda take their ball and go home, Checo seems far from the best choice for that seat.
I think red bull just want to keep max happy and as long as checo is in red bull max does not have to worry about his team mate
Sponsors and the near delusional support he gets from his fans back home took him farther than I could ever have imagined, fairplay.
Ironically, that also the case with Danny Ricciardo lmao
@@drmaulana2600 Ricciardo at least has a worldwide fanbase, and was a very good driver in his time. Checo just is carrying the support of an entire continent.

@@drmaulana2600Zhou, Sargeant, Ocon, Stroll, Magnussen are all worse than DR and Perez, and they never get the heat that Perez or DR get, it is just because perez and DR are popular they get more criticism.
I support all the drivers but Checo is the only driver I’m a real fan of and the only driver I’ve bought overpriced merch for. I am struggling to watch him this season and I’m beyond shocked Red Bull decided to keep him for another 2 years. I want him to improve but it’s already been 3 years…
If I was Christian Horner, I would tell Checko that he must finish in the top 3 for the balance of the year in order to keep his seat.
In the last three races these are the drivers who scored more points:
1- Max Verstappen 58 points
2- Lando Norris 48 points
3- Oscar Piastri 40 points
4- Charles Leclerc 40 points
5- George Russell 32 points
6- Lewis Hamilton 28 points
7- Carlos Sainz 25 points
8- Fernando Alonso 10 points
9- Lance Stroll 8 points

11- Daniel Ricciardo 4 points
12- Sergio Pérez 4 points
13- Pierre Gasly 3 points
14- Esteban Ocon 2 points
15- Alex Albon 2 points
Sergio Pérez lack of pace and skills is being absolutely ridiculous and pathetic. Three times in a row with terrible qualifying sessions.
If he continues like that, he will finish 8th in the championship. He is being really bad
lance stroll scoring more points than sergio in the last 3 races is something i didnt expect
Hamilton will still finish behind him lol
He does not lack skill, take any elite athlete and they go through a tough period, they're not gonna perform. I feel for Checo and I can't decide whether his time is up or not.

People talking as if him making up 48 points on a Red Bull is a certainty
He couldn’t do it last year when he was in a better car and Perez was even worse than now
Albon literally told that max likes the car sharper which no other driver can drive, so that explains why 2nd redbull driver struggles. Starting of the year its a balanced car so checo also does good and as we go down the season the car becomes more sharper like how max wants it hence, checo starts to struggle a lot.
Not necessarily it’s more that the sharper front end Max likes makes Max quicker. The other driver be it Albon, like he explained, or Checo will then feel pressure to be quicker also. Then comes the ability to handle such a set up and Max over classes them.
Red Bull make the car pointier cuz it's inherently faster that way. The downside to that is that it's harder for a driver to extract performance from such a car even though it is faster that way. It says a lot about how amazing Max is.
I still remember the 2020 and 2021 RB16 high rake. The rear suspension was so high it can be mistaken as a high speed shovel. 😂 I'm still surprise how Max manage to drive that car to it's fullest.
@@Robalexe Correct, I think it was newey who said they just make a car to go as fast as possible. RB is known to be the shortest on the grid (short kings rise up) so naturally the car will be more nimble.
@@Robalexeit’s all about the combination of generation of cars and its drivers. Put Verstappen in a rear limited blown diffuser era and he wouldn’t be nearly as good as he is right now. Whilst the likes of Perez would seem to be a top driver, which he was before his McLaren years.
i think checo is just depressed and lacks motivation to even try. i think the life has slowly been sucked out of him from being treated like a second-rate pawn + dealing with the dynamics of the red bull team.
as a checo fan im scared and afraid
I said even before the season started this should've been his last. He shoulda been gone at the end of this season (hell, even the end of last season), Yuki should be in the RB, and there should be a full new VCARB team
I feel like when you say "championship fight" you mean a fight for the remaining wins within the championship and not a fight for the championship itself and that's 2 very different things
The other variable on albon vs perez is that when albon was in he was a rookie and that wasn't the dominant car. Meanwhile now it is a dominant car and checo is a experienced driver he isn't doing that much better
This literally happens every year, soon enough I’ll be inclined to just resort to “nothing ever happens.”
The title is an understatement I feel. Sad to say. The hero of Sergio helping Max in 2021 has dwindled since
It would be bitter sweet to see Lawson jump straight into the flagship seat after years of Yuki vying for it. Yuki is hot headed, but he does deserve a chance imo. But, seeing Lawson go straight in and possibly perform from the downbeat would be stellar too. Either way, Checo has to go.
Yuki lost the right to that seat after he was comfortably beaten by Gasly (another driver who wasn’t good enough for them)
Albon: Rookie
Gasly: 2nd year
Perez: 10 seasons?
Pretty big difference when they got the Red Bull seat. Also a big difference in the dominance of the cars.
Oh stop! Checo responded to his contract extension by soundly thrashing Monaco winner Leclerc. 🤣
It’s a mix of various factors imo. Checo was lauded as a guy with inbuilt traction control and being incredible with tyre management. The RB atmosphere is toxic, Dr.Marko is a root cause of that along with Jos Verstappen. The team is Max’s and no matter what anyone says it must be very tough for Checo mentally to always feel he is number 2, considering he was always given a fighting chance before. The Red Bull is set up for Max and it’s obvious that Checo isn’t getting any favours development wise.
The amount of crack you must be on to have this as an opinion 😂
Justice for Yuki 🇯🇵
Why RedBull wouldn't want to seat him alongside Max next year truly baffles me. It'll allow him a year in the car without worrying about the regulation change the following year and it would be interesting to see Yuki vs Max in the same machinery.
I don't think Yuki will beat Max but I do think he's considerably faster than Sergio. This is a situation of Checo having a huge market in the States and also big backing from a Billionaire
It would be interesting in the sense of just how much Max would beat him
He’s a Gasly level driver who chokes when the pressures on. Not a given he’d even beat Perez tbh
Understand this: there’s only 2 talents on the grid that would actually interest Red Bull, they both drive for competitors McLaren
Red Bull had the chance to develop their own in Lawson, they signed Nyck de Vries instead. You reap what you sow
I feel VCARB was given as much part from RB19 as possible to check the abilities of Daniel. If he hadnt scored anything but put comparable lap times to max(2023)he would have gotten that RB seat
The combination of Newey-Verstappen is the biggest blessing & curse for Red Bull. They create the car with the most downforce & Max will drive the wheels off of it but they simply cannot get both drivers to do so.
Surely it's way more of a blessing than curse, Max and Newey are on their way to their 4th title together after all.
I’m pretty sure some other drivers can do too, just not Perez
@@jameshowie9977maybe Lando could, that’s why RBR was so interestedly signing him… I think they think that Lando would suit the RBR cars too
A blessing - for as long as Max remains at that team. Waché and Co will be fine without Adrian imo.
So my first thought on Checo being signed: Red Bull don't entirely care all that much about the constructors, they have the fastest car yet he is 5th, he is going out in Q1's every now and then. They are basically saying well we are banking on the fact that the 2-3 teams behind us stay close together and keep taking points from each other.
Second thought: They might have been thinking well what else do we do. All the drivers who are definitely better than Perez are already signed to other teams, except for Sainz. So then instead of taking a risk on those who are available and comparable at least (I personally think Albon and Gasly are better for example) why don't we keep the ton of sponsorship money, current harmony and maybe he gets back to his actual form again. In the meanwhile let Lawson grow next year and exercise the +1 option if needed.
Then on other options, we don't know how much was discussed between them and Sainz or who led to the discussion not going forward. Just like how they might have preferred to not have some butting of heads (understandable) Sainz might have been the one who ended it. Maybe he wanted something too long or too expensive.
I went to Mexico a few months ago. Saw nothing but massive Checo billboards everywhere I went. That country worships that man like a GOD, and rightfully so. It then starts to make sense why his leash is so long at Red Bull. The backing of an entire country, and sponsorships galore? What's that compared to performance? Nothing, apparently.
Honestly? They shoulda gotten Danny Ric into the Red Bull LAST YEAR. Not because he necessarily deserves it, but just to get something different in the door. He would honestly perform similar to Checo (maybe marginally better), and then AT LEAST we could get Lawson in an RB and not stall the entirety of their junior program.
I wont be surprised if Checo will be driving the V-CaRB next year. He's signed to Red Bull GmbH and not Red Bull Racing Ltd.
This is such a dumb topic, bc we said the same with gasly and albon. When is it going to be addressed the team is not giving the support Checo needs to actually get close? This is literally about the same feeling that Schumacher and Barichello had within Ferrari. It’s getting to be a tiring topic and I hate this for Checo bc he goes anywhere else, he’s back to getting the most out of the car. It’s a team problem, not a driver problem bc it’s been like this for 6 years now
I strongly suspect that Red Bull having been making very mediocre cars that manage to suit Verstappen for a long time. I think that’s what we’ve been seeing since Ricciardo: whoever was in the other seat was actually driving it to 100%. Verstappen was just so impressive that he was driving way beyond what the cars was capable of.
You simply cannot drive beyond the capabilites of the car. You can get more out of a car than other drivers. That's what Max is doing
Weird thought, but considering the reasoning of his contract Checo is now technically a paydriver
I really wanted to see Checo in IndyCar next year, as I think he can legitimately win a decent amount of races there. Just imagine if he was teammates with Pato O'Ward at Arrow Mclaren SP! Hopefully he'll pursue an American racing career in 2027.
I fully agree with your opinions Tommo.
Especially your comments on Checo on your 2024 Canadian Grand Prix Chinwag livestream yesterday!
the sad thing is that there will be very few driver changes higher up the field next year because no teams will risk moves during the regulation changes. so the fact that theyre keeping perez in the car over yuki really sucks.... we can only hope yuki can get out of the red bull family next year
While I too could also be out in the first round of qualifying, and crash in the race, I'd also crash while qualifying. So Sergio has that over me.
You would with that attitude Matt, CHIN UP.
I think the saving grace may be that three teams have the potential to cannibalize each other in trying to beat Redbull for points in the constructors championship.
There are two main issues.
Firstly (and honestly the main issue, as it also just adds to 2nd problem), is that Red Bull is built to be the best that it can be and Max is such a good driver, he can make it work, which is why he's dominated. Every season, especially the earlier seasons of these rules, Checo has driven well but as they push the car more and more to be quick, only Max is able to drive it.
IF Max also struggled, then they would design a car that was driveable first and quick second but since Max can drive it, its forced onto Perez to try and adapt.
You hear it all the time at other teams, literally Ferrari's main design objective this year, was to make the car more predictable for the drivers, so they could maximise its potential.
Perez just isnt as good as Max, no offensive to Checo, he is actually a very good driver, he's probably one of the best "paid" drivers to ever grace the grid.
And for a mid-table team, he's perfect, obviously brings sponsors but is a good enough driver to lead the team and reliable enough to pretty much always bring home some points, is ability to do crazy long stunts on tyres, able to bring home some surprise finishing places as well.
But all of that is based on him driving a car that is built with him in mind as well and in an environment where there isn't as so much pressure to perform, yes he was alot younger but we also saw this at Mclaren, where at times the pressure got to him, so much so, even had Jenson on the radio, telling him to calm down on one occasion.
So put him in Alpine or Haas or whatever and he'd have great races again I bet, without that pressure to perform week in week out.
So what Red Bull need, is a driver that can either drive anything and those are rare talents. LH in his younger days (out driving the Mclaren in the 09 season comes to mind) or Fernando Alonso who just seems to be to ring the neck out of whatever machine he's given (also his Honda days with Mclaren come to mind).
But of course a talent like that would also threaten Max and Red Bull clearly don't want that headache again, after Vettel, Webber days.
So they are going to have to try and build a car that is also driveable for their No.2 driver, as we've already seen, Gasly, Albon, Perez etc decent drivers, drivers capable of leading other teams, struggle horribly at Red Bull of late.
If Charles prefers a pointy front end wouldn’t that speak to the fact Carlos can perform in that type of car?
Three guarantees in life: death, taxes, Squarespace ad on Tommo's video
As a redbull fan I hated they extended checo I don’t hate him I just hate his performances considering when you see what max can do with that car then you see checo dam near at the other end of the pack I really wish they would’ve got sainz but I guess they wanted to keep max happy because would sainz fall in line as a number 2 driver plus i heard their dads have beef or something and I would love to see what Lawson can do in that car
Im so glad Tommo was nice and fair to Checo in this video, I've seen people ignore his past accomplishments and say he is a terrible driver
I agree with you on Liam, he's young enough to be able to be a future star that is learning under Max. Max has been and will continue to carry Red Bull and red bull needs to think about the future after Max
Mexico merch sales are up 305% and losing the constructor's means better start to the new regs in 2026 (and a more competitive 2025 for RBR). That's it. It really doesn't take minutes or hours of discussion. If they keep Checo, they lose no money by losing the constructor's championship, but gain wind tunnel time. The only thing that might become a deal breaker is crash damage cause of the cost cap. So if he mostly keeps it out of the wall for the rest of the season, Red Bull will be net positive even if they lose the WCC.
Absolutely. Put Lawson next to Max. He's already shown he has the head for wheel to wheel racing. Maybe they're waiting for Checo to break but I just hope they don't lose Lawson to someone like Williams or Audi. Lawson is tired of watching from the pits, and rightfully so
Like
Red bull and Ricciardo,
Red Bull and Gasly,
Red Bull and Albon
Starting too see a pattern here...
Seems like people seem to forget about all that … is not normal for a team to have such a big gap between drivers
I think its telling that all verstappens teammates looked dreadful against him, but have/had very succesful careers before and after they were his teammates
Driving next to Max gives extra pressure AND the car is a difficult beast but FAST
except Ricciardo
They should have put lawson in that seat. The younger guys seem to pick up on cars faster. And the one race he had he out drove yuki on his 1st race on short notice
With Ricciardo, Tsunoda and Lawson waiting in the wings it just doesn’t make sense to keep Checo. Any of the above could move into the RB seat and do at least the performance Checo is showing right now in my opinion
I feel like the moment the checo fall offs really started getting bad was when that video came out of him at a party in monaco dancing with someone that wasn't his wife.
Usually I don't care for any of the tabloid stuff but the potential change in home life from this could undoubtedly have a very noticeable effect on his performance.
I would love to see Liam alongside max. He's such a character and an amazing talent
And he's ready too most importantly.
He's ready for a seat, but I'm not sure about the 2nd RBR seat. He should have a season in a lesser team first
I don't think RedBull would do that after Albon and Gasly.
And if you look at what happened in the quali in the last race of super formula, you understand that Liam is not a "2nd driver type" of guy.
Yeah Liam seems to have a good pace, but not good enough imo, in F2 he only took 1 pole in 2 years, in his second season his teammate Sargeant (on his rookie season) had 2 poles and Liam had 0 in 14 races.
3rd, 116pts behind Drugovich in the championship in his second season. good but not great.
While Yuki had 4 poles, was 3rd in the championship, 15 points behind from the top in his rookie season. (both drove for Carlin)
@@user-cx7wp4io3q These are great points, yet people are acting hysterical because he did pretty well in his 5-race fill-in stint for Ricciardo. RBR got burnt hiring De Vries after a great fill-in race for Williams, and he failed to deliver (and he was an actual F2 champion!). So can see why RB aren't getting carried away with Lawson.
Checo is finished. I was absolutely shocked when i saw him get the extension
Outside of 2021, Checo seems to falter after great starts to a season. In 2022 he was contending vs Max and he fell off after that. 2023 he once again finds himself in a fight vs Max… and then after he dips badly in form. 2024 he puts in good results and now is dipping badly in form.
I was feelin' the GT3 music at the start there :)
In a racing sense maybe. But and this is crucial, red bull first and foremost will always be a business therefore in a corporate sense having checo is perfect for them no matter how bad he is.
Carlos: IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ME, NOT HIM!!!
the car is built more and more around max tbh, despite them saying they are equal cars, setup and development wise is a diff story.
That background music at the beginning sounded familiar. Was that from Gran Turismo 4 by any chance?
Yep
My only surprise is they did not sign Mazepin to run alongside Max.... Max does not want any competition, RB does not want to give him or Jos any competition either. Perez the luckiest man in world sport a 2 year contract for being average in the top team.Perez makes wingman like Coulthard, Berger and Johannson look like superstars
One question. if redbull has contract with both perez and sunoda(for racing bulls), cant they just swap them next year or mid season some time, if they chose to? If so, whats the all fuss about checo contract.
Tbh, I love Perez. I like his vibes as a driver. There’s something about him that makes me completely disregard his performance until someone points it out
The problem with Perez isn’t just pace. The whole idea of getting him in was to have a steady set of hands that would be slower than Verstappen but consistent (I.e. Raikkonen at Ferrari). Right now he has no pace and is also making bad errors in his mid 30’s. He seems to get flustered more easily than a rookie would, and I certainly think somebody with the temperament of Liam Lawson would do better than him.
I like Checo. I was so happy when he got the seat over Albon-even though I like Alex too. But Alex wasn't performing, so a change was warranted. 3 years on and, now, Checo isn't performing, so a change is warranted. The only thing that keeping him on for a 1+1 does for me is make me less of a fan of Red Bull. I liked the win-at-all-cost kind of mentality they used to have. This is just… flaccid.
Checo brings money, and Max likes knowing the guy in the second car isn't going to challenge him
RB20 is not always the fastest car on the grid, in fact it's rarely, but I would be willing to bet my life that it's the pointiest and least forgiving. Albon's interview about when he was Max's teammate mention that specifically and here we are mid-season again where upgrades make the car even pointier and more to Max's insane twitch reflexes and every year it gets harder for Checo to stay near the podium. Edit, your idea about tossing Lawson in the RB20 is great. Until you get another young talent who can grow into the car, the 2nd seat will always be near-impossible. But you get into the catch-22 of RB rarely letting anyone have a chance.
Is this not more of a comment about what RBR think of their current young driver crop. If they were convinced by Yuki or Daniel to take that spot, they would do it. They never used to hesitate swapping around that second driver if they underperformed. Kyvat, Albon, etc. So what internally has changed?
This is tragically starting to feel a lot like the end of Danny Ric's time at McLaren. Decent guy, great sponsorships, has had some amazing races and wins in the past, but the sun seems to be setting on his successes at least in the lens of that Red Bull. Checo has had time to acclimate and it just doesn't fly in F1 if you're always just blaming the car, or you're saying "we'll figure it out," or "if only I hadn't done that move," when there is another driver able to extract something from the same car that you can't seem to do consistently enough. We are fond of saying these days that with the cost cap, there are no more paid drivers, but realistically with the sponsorship money for both Riccardo and Checo, it's a huge portion of why they are kept and have been kept in the sport. We're short changing rookies massively. Devries should not be the reason teams are shunning the potential of new drivers even at the big teams. We can't ever know how good these guys are if they aren't' actually allowed into the sport!
What happens if he continues to bin the car every now and then. There's a cost cap, and even Max won't like that his teammate is effectively costing the team development money in such a fierce competition this season
I think Max will agree to the opinion of giving Liam straight to RBR 2nd seat. He once said that naturally RBR always gives a chance to young drivers and Checo case is just an exception. So I think he'll be okay if Liam or Yuki steps into that seat. Besides isn't it the best way to learn from the best?
Since he was close to Max in the srandings, got confident about his wc chances, followed by Max obliterating him the rest of the way.....since then Perez is not the same. Id love to see Yuki in the 2nd seat atm.
Gotta love the Gran Turismo 5 soundtrack in the background.
0.5 gap in dry and 1+ gap in wet is just too normal between Max and his teammates. And see how 10/23 perform right now?
I can't wait to see how Netflix are going to dramatize this calamity.
It took Merc losing a WDC to realize that Russel was someone they should have taken over Bottas. It will take a loss for RB to realize they need to make a change.
By then, it'll be too late.
This is just anecdotal observation but: The RB18 and 19 were a sufficient balance of pace and lack of control - right on the edge of being too loose, but rapid into and out of the corners because of the late braking/sharp turn-in that Max requires. Sergio was probably the only driver so far to be able to handle (for the most part) that oversteer-y nature in the car. It looks like the RB20 isn't balanced in the same way. Still quick, but they've pushed the limit too far this time and even Max is struggling on certain tracks (especially those that have unforgiving kerbs that can upset the balance of the car).
Horner will be thinking that of all the second drivers they've had, Sergio has been the only one to keep a lid on that car for any sufficient number of races in the season, and putting another driver in that seat is a massive unknown.
Do I think Lawson would do a better job? Yes, but then I'm biased as a Kiwi motor racing fan.
checo is a perenial midfield driver in the mold of Jarno Trulli and Fisichella; they over deliver in average cars but are out of their depth in a top team
Nobody has been able to challenge Max in the same car. That's saddening!
Riccardo was the only one who went toe to toe and won, you never know how good you had it till it's gone...
This is because Max is top top tier in terms of talent and his driving style is the most difficult thing to deal with
@@JuicedOnKids Even ricciardo was more often than not getting beaten by verstappen, but at least he managed to keep close to him
like tommo said, the car is made to maxs needs. not discrediting him cause obviously hes an incredible driver but it does make it harder when the team doesnt take your needs into account. also the thing about "not knowing different" no one goes straight into a red bull so its hard for them to make the move.
@@Ash_jade25
I don’t think it’s that, it’s just that they try to make it as fast as possible, fast is often unstable, and Max is the only one that has the ability to extract that raw pace
11/27 were teammates, 27/55 were teammates. Their average pace is about the same level. So I don’t think switch 11 with 55 will make a difference.
Checo might finish behind George and Lewis now if merc pace keeps up
Lewis 😂
lets calm down they had one decent race
@@Ash_jade25 Bruh checo can't even make it out of q1 even if they don't get pole they'll still beat him
Sending Liam to die is the most Tommy opening I ever seen lol
Lawson or Daniel?
Liam is still bit too green to trust him with the 2nd RBR seat, but his time will come. You eluded to the fact that no-one has been able to do well in the 2nd seat since Ricciardo, then the solution is staring you in the face, RICCIARDO. He is now getting back to what he was before moving to Renault, in a car that he is comfortable in and has been developing for the RB team, and Yuki has been getting the benefit of Dan's development. Dan would be a safe option to back up Max, and they get on well, and Max also knows he will not do a "Checo" on him like Checo did in Monaco a few years ago. If Dan goes well before the summer break and Checo keeps spiralling, then don't be surprised if Horner switches Dan and Checo, in desperation.
Tommo, I would like you to maybe look at the gaps in quali and average race pace gap. I think using average position doesn't really put the context that the field gap is much much lower since the 2022 regulation. I think I remember you can be 0.7s-1s off pole and only be p5, heck sometimes mercs are more than 1s ahead in the 2019 races. In AD 2019 Albon was 0.9s off pole in P6, only 0.5s off Max in P3 then Lando in P7 was 1.6s off pole, a 0.7s gap is crazy.
Love this Tommy, we all think the same about Liam - it’s frustrating!
I like the Lawson Theory… could be the perfect growth chance. They need to stick with him once he’s in the Red Bull though
RB doesn't need 2 Champion drivers, Checo might not like that but he's a better 2nd than anyone on the field. He understands and follows team plan..that's all RB needs from him. He would be happier elsewhere but happy don't pay bills😂.
Purely on performance Sainz should have that RB seat
Checos last season was a disaster class😂😂
The only reason he took second is because nobody else could challenge rb. This year will be very different
IMHO - I think the difference between drivers like Lewis and Max vs Bottas and Perez is the champs somehow extract performance on every track with variable set ups. With Bottas and Perez, it's up and down when it comes to consistency so they can start strong but there's inevitably a drop off.
