      It's like she fell through a time portal! It's too bad they was too young to play with Louie, Bing, Teagarten etc. However they capture their spirit and brings it home today, so it's like your listening to Ella and Louie simultaneously! It truly is amazing!

  • @StevenTorrey

    It is a song that comes from a German musical, "Three Penny Opera," words and music by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill. Bobby Darin made the song famous as "Mack the Knife" in 1959. Louis Armstrong first performed his version in 1955.

    • @bobh1208
      @bobh1208 5 місяців тому +4

      Credit where credit's due: Louis Armstrong's definitely the one who made this song FAMOUS as "Mack the Knife" (and, after he namedropped her in his own rendition of the American translation in 1955 - right after "Jenny Diver" - he also supposedly recorded a version with the ORIGINAL "Pirate" "Jenny" actress, Lotte Lenya). And, considering that the Threepenny Opera had over 10,000 performances between 1928 and 1933, in 18 different languages, her then husband can hardly be said to have not have already made the TUNE famous. However, this performance, despite harking back to the original German, seems obviously inspired more by Louis Armstrong and his instrumentalist-self-Satchmo's recorded performance (as, likewise, was Darin's... right down to Armstrong's "Lotte Lenya" improvisation, that was not in the American adaption of the Threepenny Opera... which had been, of course, just a German adaptation of the Beggar's Opera... which itself had already made the MacHeath character famous since 1728 [and, actually happens to have been the first British play performed in the Colonies]). Anyway, there is, for instance, a video on UA-cam of Armstrong performing this in Australia back when, and I have seen a Polish teen perform Armstrong's version on UA-cam in a This-century pop contest... so, just because Armstrong's brassy version carried Bobby Darin's "version" on its shoulders to number one on the Billboard chart, hardly makes that one as WORLD famous as Armstrong's was. Both good, however... but, I'd give Armstrong's the clear nod, despite liking the fifties version of "Stagger Lee and Billy Lyons" even better than the Furry Lewis instrumentally superior 1928 rendition! (Which, incidentally, is when the Threepenny Opera debuted... although the only "video" from then is from the 1931 movie, also featuring Lotte, also on UA-cam... though she had a higher, thinner voice then, and her FIFTIES rendition of "Moon of Alabama", likewise from the Threepenny Opera [which I think was its only song not originally in German] is the more 'wackily memorable' version.)

      @@bobh1208 That's really interesting. I hear Bobby Darin's version all the time on the oldies stations, and I wasn't aware that it was based on Armstrong's version.

    • @cantshootthis
      @cantshootthis 3 місяці тому +1

      @@JohnJones-qy5koif you want to hear the original lyrics of the German song sung in English, listen to Lyle Lovett’s song “Moritat”. He only changes one or two things to get a better rhyme going. The original was just a macabre list of Mackie’s dirty deeds, each one worse than the last. Zero references to him being the rich ladies man depicted by Armstrong and Darin. There’s also the clip from the German 3 penny opera film with English subtitles on UA-cam.

    • @cantshootthis
      @cantshootthis 3 місяці тому

      @@bobh1208Lyle Lovett did a great translation of the original in the song “Moritat” that ran during the closing credits of “Quiz Show”. Mackie was an insufferable SOB in the German song, not a suave Mac daddy hitman at all.

      It's a song about corruption in the Weimar republic... mackie Messer (knife in Ger) has knife and he goes around knifing people like poor old Schmuel Meyer for his Gelt. THere's a mention of a dead body (....Blauen Sontag Lieght ein Todes mann am Strand) on the Strand - the plot is specifically set in England to try to escape the censor in Germany of about 1935. If you type Lyrics , Mack the Knife into Mr Google you will no doubt find a translation

    I first heard this song somewhere around 1960, probably on the radio. I loved it then though I didn't understand the lyrics. It's kind of hard to interpret without the lyrics . . very soulful. Just recently I read the lyrics . . I was shocked. It makes the song even more beautiful, the contrast between the subject and the music.

      @@lisaconnearney5707 a whole boat load of people... Bobby Darin (highest charting,) Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Louie Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Brian Setzer, Dr. John, and even Michael Bublé.
      Bobby Darin didn't write the song though. It was written in the 20's in Germany.

    Outstanding version. Very talented line up. All breaks killed, and the lead singer is crazy talented. Really surprised she didn’t mention Bobby Darin along with Louis Armstrong and Frank Sinatra at the end. I’ve always thought BD’s version was the most popular and considered the standard.

      Well, as this is a cover of the German original by Lotte Lenya, the translations aren't the focus. Also the original Lenya version is very dark and the English translations and versions are really peppy, which doesn't suit the source. Especially Darin's version.

    • @anderspedersen7488

      @@VCT3333 I didn’t know about Bobby Darin’s version until reading the comments of this video. I went and had a look at Darins right after listening to Lenyas. I didn’t make it halfway through his version, I felt his cheerfulness completely missed the theme of the song. Lenyas version is outright scary, and that is meant as a compliment.

      You know Mack the Knife is from a German opera from the 1920s. Kurt Weill composed it. The original is quite dark. The English version softens it.
