Greetings James! Many thanks for whetting my proverbial appetite on a film that I had not heard of prior to your review. Bogdanovich was certainly one of the most talented and insightful directors in the American cinema and I'm pleased his debut is now available. I'm very struck by the merger of screen horror with real life horror. Those of us who aren't American are continually amazed by the level of violence that pervades that society so any art that attempts to delve into it is of interest. It's quite often the case that those who on the surface appear "normal" are most likely to snap and start killing others. My own most recent viewing experience was the 1992 classic, Bram Stoker's Dracula, directed by Francis Ford Coppola and featuring Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, and Anthony Hopkins. The is a marvellous adaptation of the famous novel and is both absorbing and operatic. Oldman is Vlad The Impaler/Dracula. The film won deserved Academy Awards for Make-up, Costume Design and Sound Effects and probably should have won for Set and Art Design. This film is more spectacle than narrative but what a spectacle it is! My most recent video acquisition is 1978-1982's television series WKRP in Cincinnati, featuring Gary Sandy, Gordon Jump, and Loni Anderson. Thank you again for the great insights on Targets and have a marvellous remainder of the weekend!
Greetings, Chris, and I’m happy to hear you enjoyed this review of one of my favorite Criterion releases of the year so far - Targets. So so good, and I enjoyed discovering this film. I’ve never seen Bram Stoker’s Dracula but might check that one out in the future. WKRP is a nice bit of comic relief to add to the mix 😄. Enjoy that pickup and hope you enjoy the rest of your Sunday and week coming up!
Nice review of an excellent release, sir. Growing up in the San Fernando Valley, I actually went to the Reseda Drive-In several times, which makes what happens in the film even creepier.
Great review! I can’t wait to pick this up. Targets has been a longtime favorite for me along with most of Bogdanovich’s work. Would love a blu ray of his film They All Laughed at some point.
Glad you enjoyed this review, Graham! This film and presentation on this blu-ray surprised me. Another great discovery for me. I need to see more of Bogdanovich’s work.
Excellent review, James! I've been so excited for this movie ever since it was announced a few months ago. Doubly excited now. Definitely thinking of picking it up this month (of course, there's so many I'd like to).
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed this review. What a fascinating film and edition from Criterion. Definitely one to consider checking out in an upcoming sale.
Its been probably 30 years since I've seen Targets and I really need to catch up with it again. The shooting rampage packs a serious punch and I think I'll still find it pretty powerful stuff. Boris Karloff's many on-screen horrors seem very tame in comparison.
Thanks for the review James. Sounds like a must buy just from the film standpoint. Legend actor and great director sounds like money well spent! Take care.

I've always thought Tim Kelly looked like he belonged on My Three Sons.
Just an amazing film. My number one Wish List item for the collection.
I really enjoyed Targets as well and can see this title growing on me even more over the years.
Haha, I thought he was definitely channeling his inner Richie Cunningham.

Hello, Drew! This was a first time watch for me and quite a discovery. Nice new edition by Criterion.
For a second I thought you were saying they were selling Criterions at Target now and I was about to go crazy hahq
That’s funny 😆. I can see where that might throw one off a bit.
Awesome review!!! Watched this vid at Barnes & Noble cafe after purchasing “Targets” lol
Oh cool. Hope you enjoy it! Glad you enjoyed the review.

I really enjoyed it. Definitely worth checking out.
