When a man plans carefully and then executes to the full… What a haul! Some films that I definitely would have picked up as well. Tunes of Glory is so great. I’ve a real weakness for the WCP sets as well. I have 1 and 2 and waiting for a decent price for 3. Happy watching!
Now that's a haul 😂 Incredible choices pal! I've got quite a few of these still on my wishlist: Okja, Le Cercle Rouge, Mr. Klein, Virginia Suicides, etc. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on each of your choices, much appreciated. Cheers, Elliot!
Wow! Epic haul there, Elliot. I went with 4 purchases: 12 Angry Men, Seven Samurai, Dazed & Confused and The Before Trilogy. Awaiting shipping to NZ. I would've loved to have bought more but shipping costs were crazy and I've only been collecting movies for about a year, and I am breaking in to the boutique market gradually. Cant wait to add more. Thanks for another great video.
I was fortunate enough to be in the US last month as well! Ended up picking up 15 titles. 5 of which were at the Fifth Ave store in NYC. I got: -Seven Samurai -Ikiru -High and Low -Brazil -Paris, Texas -Inside Llewyn Davis -House -Andrei Rublev -Persona -M -Close-Up -Memories of Murder -Short Cuts -The Grand Budapest -Blue Velvet I wanted to pick up “8 and a half” as well and it was only available at the Fifth Ave store in New York, but sadly it went out of stock the day before I could get there.
Lol. It sounds like you specifically went to New York for the Barnes and Noble sale. Sounds like something I would do. Hope you had a great time on your vacation and thanks for the great selection of movies.
That's a seriously massive haul! Great that you got the Varda and World Cinema sets. Great releases! I still have not delved into my first Criterion 4k though many of the reviews I've seen a pretty positive. Would love to get Citizen Kane, Red Shoes (already have the Blu ray so would be an upgrade), Shaft and Double Indemnity on 4k. I'm sure the latter would be a massive upgrade over the quite good but now quite old Eureka Masters of Cinema release. Plus the cover art on the Criterion looks fantastic.
I used to work at Barnes and Noble and if I wouldn't seen you in there shopping I totally would have fan girled out and said hi. Your New York footage was incredible! I loved the shots looking up at the buildings as you were going down the sidewalk. Also I made my first criterion haul video ever this year! Here it is ua-cam.com/video/sZhrCNwlb2E/v-deo.html
Incredible picks! I can’t wait for the next sale to pick up Tunes of Glory, Shaft on 4K, the Six Moral Tales box set and updating my Red Shoes copy to 4K.
How did you get 40 titles through US customs? Or did they nab you, I hope not! Great to see the Barnes and Noble Store, New York, what a city! "RED SHOES" CLASSIC - A lot of viewing there tea and biscuits feet up! Enjoy - I just got "In Cold Blood" in the UK Sale loaded with extras, looking forward to seeing it great film!
Wonderful picks, Elliot! Gives me a lot to consider for the next sale. Did you happen to travel before the releases of Raging Bull and Devil in a Blue Dress?
Don’t feel too bad. I picked up 50 titles at last month’s sale haha. Definitely got carried away! Also excellent picks. Your video gave me some good suggestions of movies I should pick up at the next sale.
@@tonywilthshire308 hahaha ya. I have very poor impulse control. It wasn’t all I once. Every time I went into barnes and noble to pick up one title on my wish list, I would end up finding others that looked great and then I would leave the store with 5 hahaha
@@ElliotCoen Good stuff. If I had to choose between having to dump my clothes out of my luggage or fitting Criterion movies into my luggage, well a trip to the clothing will be in order before too long!
Hi Elliot, I think that you might enjoy The Innocents (2021). It’s a very classy modern take on Village of The Damned (I refer to the original version of that movie), with some of the best child acting I’ve ever seen. 👍
I want to get the incredible shrinking man. I loved that movie It’s on my wish list for the next sale at the end of the year. I’m curious about the last waltz on 4K
I love _Miller's Crossing..._ one of the best Coen films! _The Red Shoes_ alone is almost worth buying a 4k player. You'll really like _The Ice Storm._ I was gonna buy the World Cinema Project boxsets for _Pixote_ alone... one of the most unforgettable films ever!
I assume you're back in Britain, Elliot, did you have any trouble bringing all that back through customs? I do envy the Americans with their much wider selection of Blu/4K releases, although we get the odd unexpected surprise over here (e.g. Dawn of the Dead!).
Ah ‘Le Cercle Rouge’ one of my all time favourites- I have the Studio Canal Blu-ray + 4K UHD editions but not the Criterion release. (Also stream it Apple Movies 4K release)
@@jonav7957 I didn't really explain my point fully, but I was referring to it being an annual sale so it wouldn't be unrealistic to go and buy atleast 12 on that basis 😄
Anyone seen the new 4K restoration of "Get Carter"? I would really like to know if it is worth buying. Or just an opinion on the movie would be appreciated.
I'm shocked the haul isn't just every copy of Barry Lyndon they had haha I'm a big Hitchcock fan but Foreign Correspondent just did nothing for me outside of 2 really great scenes (the shot of the camera during the assassination and the plane crash). Its crazy too that it came out the same year as Rebecca which is one of his greatest masterpieces To keep a theme going, I'm a big fan of the Coen Brothers but Miller's Crossing also didn't really do anything for me. On paper I should've really liked this film since its the Coen Brothers doing a 30s gangster film but I just found so little to enjoy about it. It doesn't really feel as creative as their other works to me The Human Condition is a real soul crusher of a film but its pretty great. I have the old big digipak DVD version they used to sell where its broken up over 3 discs I also picked up Chan Is Missing but haven't watched it yet. Daisuke Beppu's review of it sold me on it Love Double Indemnity but I think Ace In The Hole just barely edges it out as my favorite from Wilder
I seem to remember several months back you saying that you would be getting rid of a large chunk of your collection so that you could focus on quality over quantity. But with the large hauls you've had recently, is it fair to say that idea is out the window?
No not at all. I have purged roughly 600 films from my collection to date and I continue to do so every so often. Now, if I buy a film in a haul like this and I don’t like it, I sell it on straight away. Thanks for watching!

Streetwise is absolutely unforgettable! Great job picking that one up!
Yes looking forward to watching this weekend!
The poster was emblematic of the film's scarred beauty
Festen is in my top 3 films of all time, just incredible even on multiple repeat viewings.

So satisfying to see this kind of mission pulled off

Well done for the second finest Criterion binge since Barry Jenkins went into cinephile meltdown down in the Criterion closet.

An outstanding haul Elliot, super jealous but I alway pay attention to your recommendations which is always super helpful 💿
Cheers mate! Thanks for watching
Excellent review. Big fan of the flight of Phoenix. Thanks for the recommendation a while back on the innocents.
Shaft, The Learning Tree, One Night in Miami: those were my purchases during the most recent sale. Which I only knew about for exactly six days.
Wow! That was some haul Elliot! Great stuff 👍🏻
I got 15 Criterion titles myself. Went overboard a bit. For some reason I am most excited to get War and Peace.
Very nice Jason! Cheers
The US gets all the best titles that are locked. I want I Married A Witch starring Veronica Lake.

I am also interested on how he packed them all up to bring back to the UK.
I packed them in my carry on luggage for the plane, no issues at all!

The green River killer murdered 1 of the girl's in the movie street wise. Such a great document of 1980s Seattle.
Do you have a video of your equipment you watch these on ?

Does this sale not happen at B&N in the UK? Or do you like getting copies without all of the rating marks etc?
We only have a fraction of the Criterion selection in the UK, so many of these are just not available here. Thanks for watching!
@@ElliotCoen Always enjoy your videos! Hope you enjoyed your time in the States.
Nice pickups! Did you already pick up the 'Menace to society' disc or is it still waiting on some store shelf for you?

Hey, yes already got that one on my shelves :)
Did you have to buy an extra luggage to carry the movies back to UK?

Aren’t the US Criterion blu-ray’s region locked? Or do you have a region-free player?
Yes they are region locked and I have a region-free player. That player has been one of the best things I ever bought.
Do you have Kameradschaft? It's amazing. French/German film from 30's. Great disaster film.
Damn, nice buys. always wondering what kind of work you guys do to afford this. I only can dream of this...
If you work full time in any job, buying a £20 blu ray each month is hardly breaking the bank??

It was cheaper, and no bbfc logo is a plus! Also, the UK one doesn’t come with the included barf bag apparently
