I don't usually write comments but this was incredibly helpful, I don't know anything about nitro and I was able to completely disassemble the engine. The tutorial was very easy to follow and has aged well
Very informative video. The only thing I want to mention is at 5:13, it's worth noting that there is a small shim/washer that must not get lost that is on the end of the starter shaft. Also at 17:53, there wasn't that washer reinstalled, I don't know the importance of it,but wanted to point it out to others. And at 13:12, there is a oil hole on the bottom of the rod, it is on one side not in the middle, that side needs to face the carburetor to get lubrication.
It helps as a barrier to keep oil or fuel from seeping across the shaft. And making the one way bearing slip. Without It, you run a higher risk of slip
Just bought a TMaxx and having issues. Fantastic video to show how these things are put together. Perfect pace to hold my interest and perfectly thorough at the same time! Thank you!!! Subscribed
i was given a 2.5 tmaxx that had sat for about 8 years with no after run oil, crankshaft/intake valve was totally rusted and locked in the block....used some gun oil and channel locks to work the crank free....could not remove the sleeve so i could not fully disassemble...flushed it with oil and worked the crank around to the point it would freewheel nicely(about 40 minutes) and slapped it back together. Started and ran like a champ!
Hey Jason, this is a great video on rebuilding a nitro. Also another good cleaner for these engines is automotive carb cleaner it breaks down the old oil and nitro really good.
Damn you made that look so easy, I’ve never tried to rebuild/disassemble a nitro engine as I’ve never needed to. But I just bought a Jato with a 2.5 that could possibly use a rebuild and cleaning, and this info on disassembling them will prove invaluable. I only hope it’s in as good shape as that one is. If not, it’s getting upgraded to another, a 3.3 trade up from Traxxas would be just fine.
Thanks for the vid, great help in restoring a 2003 nitro rustler the engine hadn't ran in almost 13 years. Had dremel off a lot of rust and corrosion and replace the bearings but runs like new now 👌👌 keep it up
Only complaints about the TRX 2.5 and 3.3 is the carburetors and bearings. Replace those with the O.S. 11K carb and Avid Race ceramics and the TRX is pretty competitive.
Cool video buddy and i dont even own a nitro but i watched it to the end all the same. Be proud of yourself not many peeps interest me enough to keep me hooked on a subject id normally just skip by
man I watch all the videos you make. you helped me when I needed to rebuild my gearbox on my bandit vxl those videos really helped. this one is awesome to I am going to watch this when I need to take my 3.3 engine apart keep making more videos, your gifted so keep it up thanks again.
Amazing. If it was one dude I know I could get the information I wanted and needed . It was you . Great video and I really do appreciate the help. I picked up a e Revo 3.3 nitro 1/8 scale she's beautiful and I hope this helps me get her started . I'm very egar to gut her out and making some noise.
Just a tip, don't bother taking the flywheel off if you're changing something in the backplate or replacing the piston sleeve and rod. Doing so is risky and a complete waste of time
17:25 can you please give a tip on how to get the o-ring for the carb in the groove inside the engine? I'm pulling my hair out with how tricky this is.
My traxxas 2.5 was seized up. I used liquid wrench and WD40 I finally all disassembled with the exception of the crankshaft. It spinning freely but it will not come out. It feels like it was pressed onto the bearings. I used a wood block and a rubber mallet and tried tapping on it. Would love to get it out to lube the bearings. Any suggestions???
9:00. Be very careful when turning the piston without the sleeve. I’m not blaming anyone, but when I did this the piston came up sideways and smashed about 1mm of the edge of the piston on the inside of the block. If anyone knows where to get a piston ONLY please link it! I need it for a 2.5. I need the piston but not the sleeve.
14:04 is it okay to use lithium white grease if I don’t have wd-40 or after run oil. Could I use PB blasterin instead of wd-40. Which would be the better option compared to lithium white grease or pb blaster. Thanks and thx for putting up such a great detailed video. I’ve had my traxxas t-maxx in the garage for about 4 years collecting dust. When I put it away I knew I had to replace the piston and sleeve. I’ve done this procedure like once 8 years ago so this video was mainly to refresh my memory. I do have we-40 but I’m just curious to know if I could use the above mentioned lubricants. Thanks.
Nice video.. I'm barely getting into the rc world I had a few questions before watching this video honestly it answered pretty much A - Z.just was wondering on what or how would it be the best way to figure out the mount position on the engine honestly did not notice it was easier to remove the engine from the top screws than actually removing it from the bottom screws which now I'm having problems with. Witch I'm guessing I did not put them in the right postion since my tmaxx wont go one pressing the throttle. If anyone can give me a some good advice I would appreciate it.
Would be nice if you could explain what “pinch” is because this engine has absolutely no pinch from what I can see and it seems like it will be very hard to start
Mean green works awesome for cleaning dirt and grime off. Soke the block with mean green. Then let it sit for a few minutes then you should be able to blow all the gunk off with ease.
try a real car like assoaitaded or mrc i took my rc 500 years ago and beat the shit out of these toys on a real track a mclaran body canam style car a old modified kb .45 helo eng traxis cars looked like they wernt moving
Hey I installed the shaft and it was good. When I installed the sleeve the shaft/ crank was rough to rotate when piston was approaching top end. Do u know why? Thanks
Has anyone done the Traxxas Power-Up program where you return the engine and they give you another one? Wondering if anyone has been through the process. Otherwise, I’ll need to do this.
Couple things you did not mention there's a bubble on the rod that goes on the crank towards the crank side that should be on the same side as the cutout on the Piston which faces the carburetor of course and you should always check your mesha other than that very nice tutorial
You do it superb! I don't talk English very well but I can understand everything you said. Hate people try to use crapy voices to sound cool, make it really hard to understand. I have a question. I have plan to run again a really old traxxas (comes with opel calibra dtm body) it was the cheap/small traxxas engine wen we buy. Can I install the automatic starter in this old traxxas engines? 🙈 🙈 I plan to upgrade electronics as well cause my old beauty drives on planes controller🤣, so I want giromode to a RWD that when finish is plan to run like a truck, is it to bad? 🙈
darkeclipticheart ahh that sucks man. hey can you answer a question? at the beginning of your vids for the upgrades did you make the tunes or use already existing ones? starting to do RC stuff and was wondering.
I'm having some trouble with my 3.3, when I tightened the back plate it gets really hard to turn over, do you know what the problem is? and if so how can I fix it?
My engine got some rust inside its more like just color cause i cant feel any damage to surface does this mean my engine goes to trash or can be still reassembled and used?
I plan on it. However it's still cold outside and one of the things I was reading up on is that you should break in a motor during fair, to warm weather. So I'm going to have to wait till a nice day.
just got this exact truck from someone who had it for like 13 years. he said he couldn't start it. i got down to the piston and then i realized the engine had ceased. then i got here. Any advice?
Well, i hope you have fixed it! I had the same problem on my Kyosho Giga Crusher. After a ton of WD40, i realized that it wouldn' t uncease. What i did was I got a flathead screwdriver and put it between the crank hole and the con rod (a.k.a Connecting rod) and just pushed it a bit and it unceased! My con rod didn' t bend if you are wondering, but do it in your own risk
Fanis S2000 I did get it by the end of that day. I used brake parts cleaner. I found it the best for removing all the gunk. And to in cease it, I took a pair of channel locks on the fly wheel and turned really hard
On my traxxas 3.3 i noticed that there is a very small hole near where the connecting rod meets the piston. Its only on one side. Do you know which side the hole is supposed to face (intake port or exhaust)???
Do not use W40 as working lubricator. It is used to help to start moving stuff and cleaning. After short time it dries out leaving no lubrication. If you dont have anything better - few drops of any carengine /lawn mower is still better idea than W40.
i used wd40 once to rebuild a 440 bombadear sled eng once be care ful i turned it over on my work bench i almost shit myself when it started up in my hand wd40 is flameable wow 2cil 40 hp running on a work bench not cool it ideled perfect
I don't usually write comments but this was incredibly helpful, I don't know anything about nitro and I was able to completely disassemble the engine. The tutorial was very easy to follow and has aged well
This is the best nitro assembly video on youtube hands down.
Very informative video. Always nice to wake up and see a new video by DEH while getting ready for school
Your videos are so informative, now I can learn new thing about my hobby without searching all over the internet !
Thanks for the video. I just got my 4 tec runing after 8 years of siting still and was able to get a better starter on it.
Very nice Jason. Very informative for people that aren't familiar with nitro engines. Nice work!
Thank you. Your video helped my completely tear down my old Tamiya RC car engine for inspection and cleaning
Hey Jason, this is a great video on rebuilding a nitro. Also another good cleaner for these engines is automotive carb cleaner it breaks down the old oil and nitro really good.

Great video! You showed the orientation of the piston inside the sleeve! No one ever shows this!
Awesome video Jason! Thanks for taking the time to film it.
Wow. An RC guy who wasn't annoyed.
Only complaints about the TRX 2.5 and 3.3 is the carburetors and bearings. Replace those with the O.S. 11K carb and Avid Race ceramics and the TRX is pretty competitive.
Great video, helped me to get through my Vintage Kyosho GT engine strip
Cool video buddy and i dont even own a nitro but i watched it to the end all the same. Be proud of yourself not many peeps interest me enough to keep me hooked on a subject id normally just skip by
Thank you. That's great to hear!

Thank you for this video. It helped me take my nitro rustler engine out! :)
WD-40 is a must for these have! Nice video
Very well done. Thanks for the step by step, might have to do this soon.
Awesome video. Love the way you explain everything in detail.
Joey true
Corne 011 damn bro a little late on the reply lol

Excellent work! Thanks for posting!!!
Thanks a lot your video help me out in getting mine running again your video two thumbs up thanks again
Thank you thank you! Engine would not richen and found out half of the piston was gone!
Same kind of thing happened to me when I burnt a piston from being to lean
Just a tip, don't bother taking the flywheel off if you're changing something in the backplate or replacing the piston sleeve and rod. Doing so is risky and a complete waste of time
Very good video! Thanks for posting.
Awesome video! I’m about to rebuild mine and this video was a huge help!
Thanks for making this video.
Great Video! Helped me a lot with my old Hpi Rush! :D
Thankyou so much!! This helped LOTS!!!
Excellent video and clear voice
17:25 can you please give a tip on how to get the o-ring for the carb in the groove inside the engine? I'm pulling my hair out with how tricky this is.
When you take apart a motor and put it back together does it need to go through the break in process again????
Only if you put in new parts, like a piston, rod, etc.
Nice work- excellent vid!!
What kind of oil should I use for the bearings? I got to completely disassemble my Kyosho GXR-18 because of a crankcase crack. Hope I can save it :(
Thanks brotha, great video...I was looking into a t-maxx too much money
Why did you not replace that broken cooling head?
Great video! Will it run without the carb ‘boot’?
My traxxas 2.5 was seized up. I used liquid wrench and WD40 I finally all disassembled with the exception of the crankshaft. It spinning freely but it will not come out. It feels like it was pressed onto the bearings. I used a wood block and a rubber mallet and tried tapping on it. Would love to get it out to lube the bearings. Any suggestions???
thank you Jason for making this video ! this will be very helpful in my near future lol
This can be morphed over to the 3.3 as well?
Thanks for the vid was very helpful just completed my first engine tear down and rebuild and she goes good thanks for the help
Nice work. Thanks Bud.

looks like you damage a tooth on the fly wheel with those channel locks..at 6:15
he should have used a piston locker and a flywheel puller
One of the best videos on how to disassemble a TRX engine. Is the process the same for TRX 3.3?
Sotiris Karagiorgis yes
Nice video.. I'm barely getting into the rc world I had a few questions before watching this video honestly it answered pretty much A - Z.just was wondering on what or how would it be the best way to figure out the mount position on the engine honestly did not notice it was easier to remove the engine from the top screws than actually removing it from the bottom screws which now I'm having problems with. That’s a Nice clean Traxxas TMaxx 😎
What is the piece on the back of the starter mount inside the motor?
Would be nice if you could explain what “pinch” is because this engine has absolutely no pinch from what I can see and it seems like it will be very hard to start
awesome vid!! Very helpful
I am wondering around the clutch shoes, does it have a spring around the clutch shoe, I didn’t see it in your model?
What size is the O-ring that goes in the groove where the carburetor seats?
Mean green works awesome for cleaning dirt and grime off. Soke the block with mean green. Then let it sit for a few minutes then you should be able to blow all the gunk off with ease.
Simple green....blue bottle, and it says "motorsports" on it. Absolutely awesome. (and it's biodegradable)
too bad he didnt rebuild it all that work + time for nothing
try a real car like assoaitaded or mrc i took my rc 500 years ago and beat the shit out of these toys on a real track a mclaran body canam style car a old modified kb .45 helo eng traxis cars looked like they wernt moving
futaba mag jr radio and look out i won week after week a good union job helps too
Hi! I have a question. Can you use a 3.3 engine crankshaft on a 2.5? Both are traxxas.
Hey I installed the shaft and it was good. When I installed the sleeve the shaft/ crank was rough to rotate when piston was approaching top end. Do u know why? Thanks
I was rebuilding a Traxxas 3.3 motor but one of the crank case? Screws were stripped and that ended pretty quick the motor was about 8-10 years old
Не знал как достать пару, спасибо!
Sir I’m pretty sure that "bar" in the piston is a wrist pin but ion know I’m only 17😭😂
Has anyone done the Traxxas Power-Up program where you return the engine and they give you another one? Wondering if anyone has been through the process. Otherwise, I’ll need to do this.
This was great!
Great vid. Love it!
Hey man what job do u have to afford all those donations?
Couple things you did not mention there's a bubble on the rod that goes on the crank towards the crank side that should be on the same side as the cutout on the Piston which faces the carburetor of course and you should always check your mesha other than that very nice tutorial
One of my buddies gave me this without the engine and extras. Still has transmission.
Is it WORTH the TIME AND EFFORT & MONEY to rebuild.???????
Yes, dm me @the_traxxas_project on insta or maxx_rc on Facebook I'll help you
very informative nice video
i noticed that when i turn the crankshaft the piston kinda sticks a little at one certain spot but goes smoothly the rest is this normal
if it sticks in a spot scrap it somthings bent or out of round
You do it superb! I don't talk English very well but I can understand everything you said. Hate people try to use crapy voices to sound cool, make it really hard to understand. I have a question. Hello, bearings to how be replaced?
Thanx...
Great video!
Cool vid
does it matter if the heat Lopez cracked
is your right hand okay? it looks funky on camera.
Hands dried out from all the cold weather.
darkeclipticheart
ahh that sucks man.
hey can you answer a question?
at the beginning of your vids for the upgrades did you make the tunes or use already existing ones?
starting to do RC stuff and was wondering.
He made them
Great job
I'm having some trouble with my 3.3, when I tightened the back plate it gets really hard to turn over, do you know what the problem is? and if so how can I fix it?
you fucked somthing up start over take your time
The sleeve on mine doesn’t seem to come out
My engine got some rust inside its more like just color cause i cant feel any damage to surface does this mean my engine goes to trash or can be still reassembled and used?
Ev0ltion you can use some RC motor cleaner and it should be good.
If the engine works why would you throw it away? Running it for a while could help clear it out.
try steel wool rust off first dont force it
Anyone else gasp when he dropped the crankshaft?
Wait, I swear I saw this same channel name on eBay for a user, I am only guessing that it’s got to be you! Cool.
What did you use to clean it?
Any washers on the crankshaft? I just found out that I have a small plastic washer when I took the crankshaft off. Thank you
Very helpful
Best video! Thanks a lot!
Nice 👍👍👍
try a tooth brush and brake clean or silverwere tray in dishwasher better yet ultra sonic cleaner
Wait isn't WD 40 a solvent?
When u put that new motor in u should make a video how to break in a nitro motor
I plan on it. However it's still cold outside and one of the things I was reading up on is that you should break in a motor during fair, to warm weather. So I'm going to have to wait till a nice day.
Ok Jason that would be a very help full video
Because it can be very complicated to break one in
When I have removed the nut to remove the carb, the carb is still stuck on, how do I get it off? help please and thank you.
+A.M.M.O had that issue, spray wd40 around the carb
+Jester ok thanks
A.M.M.O no problem
+A.M.M.O Exactly what Jester said. Thanks Jester!
darkeclipticheart any time man, im still watching over your channel no matter what!

Louis Bernard Brake cleaner... Hmm i had never thought of that for sure...
What' s your truck?
It's an old T-maxx 2.5 I think it is
Louis Bernard Nice!
wow thanks i didnt realize nitro engines were 1 cylinder im an electric guy but im thinking about nitro
Eoin Shea they can be troublesome but great fun you should do it if you haven't
My sleeve is seized, any recommendations?
I used a heat gun to get mine loosened up after sitting for nearly 15 years. Took a lot of heat but it slid right out when I got it warm enough.
Where i can buy this electric starter?
make it yurself
On my traxxas 3.3 i noticed that there is a very small hole near where the connecting rod meets the piston. Its only on one side. Do you know which side the hole is supposed to face (intake port or exhaust)???
