  • The "Stand" skill is necessary for cleaning, examination, putting on special equipment, and it helps to instill discipline. Condition stimuli - the “Stand" command and hand signal - raising the left hand in front of the body to shoulder level with the palm up. Unconditioned stimuli - pushing upward on the dog's midsection with the left hand, pulling up with the leash, petting, and food reward. The skill is introduced after developing the dog's conditioned responses to the "Sit" and "Down" commands. The dog should be able to stay in the position for at least one minute. The main training method is contrastive.
Methodology and training technique. With the dog in the sitting position, the trainer stands to its right and gives the "Stand" command. After 0.5 second he pulls the leash lightly forward while simultaneously lifting the dog up, using pressure with his left hand on its stomach. As soon as the dog stands, the trainer rewards it with petting and a treat. If the dog attempts to sit, the trainer moves his hand back under the dog's stomach and supports it in the standing position repeating the command "Stand" and "Good Dog". In the first exercises the dog is allowed to release and relax after 5-10 seconds. Later, the length of time that the dog must stay in the "stand" position increases. The exercise is repeated 35-40 times. This regime continues for 4-5 days. The initial conditioned reflex is considered developed if the dog stands at the "Stand" command and remains in this position for 15-20 seconds. Subsequent improvement of the initial conditioned reflex until it becomes a learned behavior is accomplished with the introduction of complexity and by following the rules presented in the techniques for teaching a dog to sit and lie down. Developing a conditioned response to eh "Stand" hand signal has its nuances. Raising the left hand to shoulder level is similar in its mechanics to the initial exercises. Therefore, raising the left hand becomes and unconditioned signal. The exercise using the hand signal is conducted as follows. When the dog is lying down at a distance of one step from the trainer, the trainer takes a step forward with his right leg and uses his left hand to raise and position the dog. While applying light pressure to the dog's stomach and raising him with his left hand, the trainer gives the "Stand" command. As soon as the dog stands up, he/she rewards it by petting and giving a treat. Simultaneously applying pressure with his left hand, the trainer gently pulls the leash forward. Later, the action by his left hand can be performed without taking a step forward. A light pulling of the leash towards the trainer serves as reinforcement. The "Stand" command skill is considered developed if the dog stands up crisply at the trainer's command or hand signal at a distance of 25-30 meters under complex conditions, correctly extends its body and stays in the standing position for at least 5 minutes.
Potential trainer errors and their consequences: 1. Excessively strong pressure by the left hand on the dog's stomach or a blow to the stomach, which could elicit a cowardly response and an attempt to sit or lie down when the dog sees the trainer's hand. 2. Excessively strong jerk of the leash, which forces the dog not only to stand up, but also to leave its position. As a result, it will take longer to teach the "Wait" 3. Frequently calling the dog to come from a standing position, which creates in the dog the habit of moving off on its own without a command.
