To all of the people saying that this performance consisted of too many runs, riffs and ad-libs: You do realize that she was singing the song EXACTLY as Stevie sang it, right? Stevie is actually the originator of the runs and melisma that's common in R&B music.
Another thing, this performance was, from a technical standpoint, almost flawless. A perfectly executed lower register, perfect intonation and a clear, fluid and musically creative use of the whistle register. This performance was also 100% completely live. So haters can go elsewhere. 'Tis all.

She did for a lot of it, but the problem is when she tried to stray from what Stevie did she got lost in the harmony. Stevie's chord changes can be hard. Whenever she hit those minor ii-v's she lost the landing. The first time it landed on major, the second on a half diminished. This was quite restrained for MC, and loved that she stayed low, but some people can hear that there are certain places where she's running and it doesn't fit quite right. It's not that she running too much, it's that she sometimes ran to the wrong places- not at all often, but it happened, and it could happen to any musician. Stevie's harmony can kick anybody's butt. She did great, though!

For those who are criticizing her rendition of the song I have thoughts to share:
She's a vocalist, she uses her voice as an instrument so it's very well expected of her to do acrobatics and use it as so.
It's very reductive of people to expect her to sound flat and not do melismas, runs and etc when the original version, sung by Stevie himself, has as many inflections as hers. Thus, you're just applying your preconception of how a singer should sound into the "analysis".
If I can't convince you, I'll leave it at Stevie's face and enjoyment on it to do so.
    Get better, don't get bitter!

The one thing Mariah doesn't get credit for (among a host of other credits) is her compositions. She completely re did this song to fit her vocals and killed it. Stevie was intrigued and was wondering "where is this going."
