    alternative for those who want to save some $$. Use the cpu/fan, memory, and nic with a deskmeet x600 and your price would be: 209.99 (deskmeet) + the other components = $882.95..sure, it's not rack mountable, but you could just use a shelf. and you could sell the barebones system far easier than a server chassis in the future.

    Nice build! I just did something similar, but instead of a rack mount case I went with a Node 304. I also went AM4 in order to not spend a fortune on ECC memory. I mimicked the HL8 that 45 Drives is producing. Gigabyte B550I Aorus Pro AX, Ryzen 5 Pro 5650GE, 64 GB of ECC memory, Corsair RM650 PSU, M.2 NVMe to SATA adapter (ASM11166 chip), intel dual port 10gbe SFP+ NIC. It idles at 20 watts with its boot drives, and runs at 42 watts with TrueNAS scale virtualized, running an an additional 6 drives (2 ironwolf spinners and 4 SM863a SSDs), and all of my VMs.

    Love the build, but I went much cheaper. I used the Rackchoice 2U short depth from Amazon. It's $100, has no exhaust, comes with front fans, but I put 2 noctua in the front and a noctua cooler. I love this case and wouldn't change it. Used Asrock Rack motherboard (gotta have that ipmi), Intel 9700 8 core/8 thread (cores are more important than threads per Proxmox), 64GB non-ecc, dual 1TB NVME for VMs using ZFS (for thin provisioned backups via NFS to Truenas) and a single 2.5 for the OS. Deigned a 3D mount for a 90mm thermaltake slim fan in front of the 5.25 bays. Also designed a 3D HDD mount for the 5.25 bays which holds 3 drives. You can still put a bunch of 2.5s in the original mounts. And designed a 3d mount for a 20mm noctua blowing across the SFP+ card as that needed a little cooling. I think all it was about $600.

      Love it! Funny enough, one of those cases is what I was considering and I wish I went with it. This isn't a bad case, just would have liked slightly more airflow. Thanks for watching!

      Would love to see your full parts list along with 3d print files so I could spec and build this myself. I'm in the UK so the prices can often be way more than the US

    Nice build, I just completed a build for my PROXMOX server. I think I went a bit overboard through, but I'm retired, don't golf or have other expensive hobbies. My case is a Sliger CX3702, I can put a crap load of drives into it. The cost was a bit over the top especially when I had it delivered to British Columbia with the tax and duty. I piled in a bunch of SSDs and spinning rust, the mobo is a ASRock Rack B650D4U-2L2T/BCM. This was my first experience with the ASRock Rack and remote access via IPMI, once I had my head wrapped around it, I'm sold! I used an AMD Ryzen7 7700x but not totally sold on it, runs hot requiring a fair amount of cooling, will be replacing it with Epyc 4004 4464P once the price is more resonable and there's stock. Lastly, I went with 128 GB ECC memory, again I could have done fine with 64 GB, but got a deal and future proof was on my mind. Anways, enjoy your videos, always find something new to try out! Cheers

    If placement in rack allows some space above the server and processor airflow asks for some attention - old good drilling holes in case above processor to make exhaust always come handy. The aesthetical look depends on your drilling skills and instruments, of course. As alternative - its possible to make one bigger hole and 3d print ventilation lid as well. Good luck with new home server.

    Thanks! Great video! One criteria that I have for a home server is that it support out-of-band management , like HPE's iLO. That way, I can manage the server remotely, and have no need to connect it to a keyboard, mouse, and monitor. That's what I really like about my old HPE servers. But I've been looking for a server similarly speced as your server. My question is: does it support remote management, so I can power it on and off, etc. independent of or install an OS like Proxmox remotely.,

    Hi Frank, excellent video. Is there any specific why you have chosen 2 SDD 870 drives for the operating system? I understand that separation between operating system and the VMs. Would be great to understand rationale behind, since I‘d like to order a similar setup. Is my assumption correct that you are using a raid setup?

      Thank you! You are correct - I like to configure the OS with RAID 1.

    I built a server very similar a couple years ago. My internal components are older but my case looks very similar. The case was very cheap (inexpensive) and it did not have the vent for the PSU so I cut that corner out with a angle grinder. The case top lays right on top of the PSU so it seals just fine. I don't know what brand the case is but it is built like a tank, very heavy, and it was about $50.00 on ebay brand new. I put this computer in my audio rack and it is hooked straight into my sound system. The music files are on my truenas server so I only put a small ssd in there for Debian. I use J River Media Center software to play music, but it also has a dlna server so I can use the same playlists anywhere on my network.

    I used this case in a build with a AMD 5 7600, unfortunately after 1year and a half I had to sell it as I wasn’t happy with temps on the cpu. With my proxmox instance with 6 VMs and 4-5 lxc containers it was running at constant 75-80 degrees. Tried cable management and removed the metal stuff behind the front fans didn’t help much. Only increasing the fan speed but at that point it was too loud.

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  17 днів тому

      Yeah that's what I am a little worried about. All of the reviews tend to highlight how premium it is, and it is, but that second 80mm fan being blocked and only have two to start really kills the airflow in this case.

  • @tomreingold4024

    Really nice. I think you made great compromises, making it as perfect as you can. You might decide cooling is insufficient, but I'll guess you won't. And if it proves to be insufficient, the cost to replace the case will be low.

      Out of the box or through OC? If it's not OC'd, that's awesome!

    I wonder if a 3U case with vertical cpu cooler like Noctua NH-U9 (if it would fit?) would make any better on cpu temps...

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  19 днів тому +1

      The CPU temps haven't been that bad so I don't think I need anything bigger...I just kind of wish I went with a different case because there are a few 2U Micro-ATX cases out there with 4 x 80mm fans in the front instead of two.

    I went a much cheaper option by going the Small Form Factor HP Prodesk i5 10th gen for $100 on Marketplace. Storage is via Synology NAS NFS Share to Proxmox.

    Can you fit a GPU in there? I like your build but it would be missing a small Intel Arc or something for Plex transcoding. Otherwise cool build!

      @WunderTechTutorials  19 днів тому

      With a riser card, yes, and possibly a few low-profile GPUs. I am going to probably attempt to get it working with the AMD iGPU...which might prove to be a mistake, LOL! Thanks for watching!

    What was your previous setup?
    Have you changed any bios settings to save up more on power for your workload?
    Like disabling turbo boost and pbo, smt? Or using curve optimizer?

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  19 днів тому

      I've had a mix of a Ryzen 5900X (that ended up dying...COVID parts were not good) and a 12600K which I repurposed when the Ryzen died. Both were good overall, but the 9700X is proving to be super power efficient for the workload. I disabled a few of the standard OC'ing features, and will potentially play with PBO a little more, but in the beginning, PBO hurt performance a little too much so I have to refine it more than I did initially if I want to use it. Honestly though, I think I am fine with it as it is...but time will tell.

    • @philippemiller4740
      @philippemiller4740 18 днів тому

      @@WunderTechTutorials look at curve offset, gets better temps, clocks and heat. It allows PBO to boost higher for longer.

    The Silverstone CS382 would give you the opportunity for a optical drive to rip dvds.

    • @BoraHorzaGobuchul
      @BoraHorzaGobuchul 19 днів тому +1

      In this day and age there's little need to rip DVDs/BDs. Unless you're really into this flavor of BDSM, doing a proper rip is kinda hard. One can easily select from multiple rips made by people who do that a lot, choosing the size and quality you need, for most movies on the high seas. And if you already own the actual disk, it's not even piracy, since you paid for it. Just use a VPN if you're in one of those mickey-mouse loving jurisdictions
