Hey Captain Zac, We really enjoy your videos and your adventures. I have fished all my life in Washington State and the WDFW requires us to use a dehooker device to release small fish over the water for the best chance for their survival. It can be as simple as using a gaff hook pulling the hook out of the fishes mouth and releasing the fish over the water instead of handling the small fish or landing them in the boat. I mostly use a siwash hook on my lure set ups and we are required to pinch the barbs down. I just thought I would share this with you. Take care and tight lines!
Hi Scott thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this salmon derby footage! I appreciate the tips on ways to reduce the stress on small kings during the release process. We need as many of these little kings to grow up to full size as possible, especially given how challenging the runs have been in the past few years! Thanks again and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
Hi Bill & Mikes Angling Adventures thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this salmon derby action! Thanks for the positive comment - I was thrilled to land on the leaderboard after three long days of trolling! Tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
Hello Captain Zac,, good to be home and watch your video and relax, trapped in heavy flooded in a small town for a couple of weeks and help people to clean and recover belongings from flood .The worst flood in New Zealand history. Thanks for the nice fishing trip, best regards to all,, Tony.
Hey Tony thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this derby action! Wow - I'm so sorry to hear about the terrible flooding! I hope your friends and loved ones are OK. It sounds like a devastating situation. Good luck with the recovery efforts my friend! Tight lines again soon! Captain Zac
Thanks Captain Zac,, We and our families are OK, many people have lost all they had, but we don't give up helping one an other, there are a lot of volunteers and millions of donations and we will got there eventually. Many thanks buddy.
@@waikarimoana I'm glad to hear that there are plenty of volunteers and donations heading your way. Sometimes the worst disasters bring out the best of humanity. Be safe my friend!
Where I live Your full species catch would be called a Grand Slam. Wow, Fun to watch ! Love it. So Happy for you guys !!! And seeing Mary with you made the day
Hey DirtBikeWarrior many thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this derby action! Ah yes - a Grand Slam! I appreciate the positive comment - it was great to have Mary aboard for the final day! Thanks again and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

Hey Daniel it's great to hear that you found my channel! Thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this derby action! Haha that would have been epic if a big king hit during that dance - if it had, next year half of Juneau would be dancing around their boats! haha Thanks again and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
Hi Russ thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed this derby footage! Yes you are correct - this was Auke Bay. Hopefully these little feeder kings will grow up for another year or two and then return here to Juneau! Thanks again and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
Hi Peeling Line thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this salmon derby footage! Haha you are exactly right - of course a "mixed bag" of fish show up on the day you only want to catch a salmon! Thanks again and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

Hey Chris thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this derby footage! Wow that's awesome CONGRATS on #8 - I bet that big king put up quite a fight! Looking forward to June 1st and the start of king fishing this year! Thanks again and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
16th is solid bro ! Nice work . I fish landlocked Chinook in lake Ontario out of Oswego harbor Oswego New York . Such a powerhouse of a fish my biggest is 36.25
Hi Travis thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this derby footage! Wow - congrats on that 36.25lb king! That's an awesome fish - I bet that battle was unforgettable! Thanks again and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
@CaptainZac Thank you for responding means alot to me . I love your content from what I can find there isn't alot of trollers on UA-cam to follow that are worth watching 😉
I guess if you want to catch a huge King you should enter a rockfish tournament. HA! What are the regulations for Kings during the tournament? Could you have kept a smaller one to eat? As usual always a fun video, Captain Zac.
Hi Steve thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this derby action! Haha yes indeed all you have to do is wade through 50 rockfish to get a quality king bite! The tournament regulations mirror the broader Fish & Game regs - feeder kings (most kings other than those caught in special regulation areas) have to be 28" to keep. Any king 28" or larger can be either kept for personal use or turned in as a tournament fish. By this point in the summer (mid-August), I've got tons of salmon in the freezer so I'm happy to donate any legal fish I catch during the derby to a good cause. Thanks again and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
I love how you keep it real On your GoPro what chip do you use? I have a scan desk one terabyte. I’ve had nothing but problems with it losing lots of videos.
Thanks @Bradleyoutdoorsman! I typically use 400gb SanDisk cards in my GoPros except for when I use an underwater setup - then I use a much smaller card since there is a chance of snagging off the camera and losing everything (I change the cards frequently as I catch fish to avoid losing a bunch of footage if my whole setup gets snagged off). Sorry to hear that you've been losing footage on the 1T card - how frustrating!!! Thanks again and tight lines! Captain Zac
Unfortunately, this net ended up breaking mid-season last year and I replaced it with two different Beckman nets - one large tournament net and another smaller rubber net for quick/easy net jobs (the ones I used in the 2023 Salmon Derby video). Tight lines! Captain Zac
Hi Rod thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this salmon derby footage! I realize that the survival of these salmon (especially the small king salmon) is very important and we will continue to try to minimize the impact we have on these fish. Tight lines - Captain Zac
Awesome derby action. You guys were into a lot of feeders and caught a ton of rockfish. Sweet radio plug for the channel. Do you ever try the silver horde or tomic plugs up there? I have caught most of my larger fish on them and was curious if you ever run them. Tight lines bro!
Hey Piscatorian thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this derby footage! Yes indeed it was rockfish city to start each day. I've not run these plugs in the local waters here but have been reading that they often avoid hooking smaller fish (thus yield fewer bites but larger kings). I may test a few out this year - I'm always looking for additional options when putting together the derby strategy! Thanks for the tip and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
Hi Zachary thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed this derby footage! I appreciate you clarifying the identity of this fish - I was totally dialed into the king salmon fishing and must have overlooked this haha Thanks again and tight lines! Captain Zac

@@CaptainZac I find the lingcod hit the salmon rigs pretty well too. But obviously not until the ling season is closed.
Fish at 2:16 looks like an Atka Mackerel (Pleurogrammus monopterygius) - in the greenling family along with kelp greenling and lingcod. Neat catch!
