  • Changing the heating element on a Whirlpool Duet GEW9200LW1 from the front. Other youtube videos show replacing this from the rear of the machine. This was just a thought to pull off the front panel and it sure appears to be easier :) Sorry the video is a bit shaky however I'm sure you get the idea. I know I should clean the vent, we do this in the winter because the the vent exits to the roof and I have found this to be the easiest method of cleaning.
    As suggested by ohger1, Before pulling it apart, check your breaker panel. The heating element is across the 240 pair, so if one part of a double breaker is open, the dryer will turn and but won't heat. With a meter set for AC, you should see 120V from the center ground pin to both sides, and 240 across the outside pins. If you're getting this voltage, then proceed with taking the machine apart.

    I did it from the rear last time and it was kind of a hassle, so this video was helpful to save some time... The heating element for this dryer is now $20 at Amazon for a surprisingly high quality one. I bought three different manufacturer made coils, and returned the lower quality ones. The BEST ONE is sold by SNAP SUPPLY! Avoid the ones from other sellers in the $20 range, but the Snap one was good to go. The coils were larger and the wire was thicker. I've replaced it before once and my dryer is now 15 years old. MAKE SURE YOU VACUUM OUT THE LINT! Pretty good idea to replace the drive belt while you have it open, it's a couple bucks and they eventually wear out. Check the rollers to make sure they don't have any play in them.

    Thanks for this! I too had the "cold air" issue and pulled the coil. Sure enough, there's no continuity. New one on the way from Amazon. Saved me tons of money on getting a repairman to come out.

    Just now doing this repair for the 2nd time in the 20 year life of our dryer - Model GEW9200LL1. The element is held in the squarish tube by a screw thru the element rail near the electrical connections for the heating element. All my screws have 1/4" nut driver heads. The tube itself has a tab on the top that holds it in the duct in the back of the dryer. I got mine out my rotating the whole tube enough so I could lean the tube up towards the tab. The tube goes from squarish to round in the back. It is helpful to remove the element before trying to release the tube that it is in. Take good pictures of the wiring before removing any connections.

      @@22howards I'm cleaning the lint out of everything I can while I'm waiting on the parts to get here. I've already removed the old parts in preparation. The old element has no continuity so I know it is the problem. Getting new thermal sensors just for the heck of it. Thanks!

    Great Stuff I was able to fix mine the same way you showed in the video. It was a mess and took quite a bit of vacuuming to get it even close to how clean your dryer was in the video. I also pulled off that fan cover and found 95 cents (3 quarters and 2 dimes plus a bobby pin and a small screw lots of dirt and lint. its a wonder mine was working at all lol
    found a break in the coil but replaced all the parts just because I ordered the kit.
    Thanks for posting it was a huge help.

    It's 2023...our ancient dryer finally died...was heating element....almost gave up trying to pull out element casing...then saw vids of people taking apart entire machine....had a new machine in the cart from Lowes online.....then saw comments HERE that mirrored my issue....so, I pull the living schiff out of the housing and it came free....ordered part ($19 on Amazon).....happy camper!! Thanks.

    SERIOUSLY, THANK YOU! I was all talked into $799 for a new dryer, because I didn't want to pull the damn thing down (mine are stacked) and take it all apart. I wondered if this might be possible to do in place. Now, I'm not only saving a packet, but now I don't even have to pull down the old dryer and lift the new one into position. Besides which, the new model didn't have this access door on the bottom. My model is WED9200SQ0. Cheers!!

    I have a Kenmore Elite on a pedestal but cold not pull the tube holding the heating element without lifting the front of the tube high enough to release that catch in the back. I do not believe I could have pulled hard enough to pull that tube out the way you did and even if I did it would never go back in correctly if I did that. I watched another video here and was able to basically disassemble the entire unit to remove the drum and give me room to remove the heating tube. My unit is 12 years old and after doing this I think it will last another 12 years because everything inside works great and turns smoothly. Annually I thoroughly clean the interior of the dryer and the vent system but when I took this unit apart I was surprised at how much lint there was hidden inside the unit parts, around the roller wheels and the motor. Now the entire unit and heating/vent system is as clean as it was when new. Even if I had been able to remove the tube the way you did I am glad I did it the way I did so I could see and inspect the rest of the system and clean everything. Good video though and thanks for posting it.

    Just a point of reference, we bought at Duet washer/dryer pair used from someone last year. The element just burned out of ours.
    We really had to wrestle to get the tube to disconnect from the back. I'm hoping it goes back on easier than it came off.

    I have a maytag comparable to yours, but the element it stamped in and riveted! Also didn't just fall out into my hand after removing the 2 screws! I packed it in and bought a new dryer! All the sensors were riveted in. I wish mine was this easy! Not at all As per your request. Model # MED970CSQ0. The 2 dryers look the identical. They come apart completely differently. The whirlpool looks so much easier. That's not the case for the Maytag. That's again for your helpful video. Just not helpful for this dryer. Hi Chip. I succeeded in removing the unit from the front. As I said, it was hung up, but I kept twisting it left and right and upward at the same time (because I had seen a picture of it and there’s a tab on the back of the housing at 90° with the housing to stop it from sliding out). When I finally found a correct angle, it released. After replacing the element, I bent the tab backwards so it was more like a 60 or 50° angle instead of 90° angle so I could just tilt it up a little and slide it in place.

    Same non-heating issue. I have the wed9400swo model installed in 2007. So I got 12 years out of it. I found the part on amazon Wadoy 8544771. My model has the black clip on top of the heating element housing connecting to back of dryer. Kinda difficult to get off as you need to bend housing up but I did not remove the drum and a bunch of other stuff shown in another video. I just made sure that the housing was tight up against the back when reinstalled the bracket. Heats up good now, we’ll see how long this one lasts.

    Before pulling it apart, check your breaker panel.

    • @22howards
      @22howards  7 років тому +1

      ohger1, you are correct however some folks don't have the correct tools nor knowledge to do this. May I suggest you make a video of this to show how its done safely. Thanks for the comment, you make a very valid point and one that I did leave out of the video.

    • @ohger1
      @ohger1 7 років тому

      I'm a viewer not a creator!!! :) I don't know if you can edit your excellent video, but just adding an overlay graphic to check the breaker panel is really all that's needed. Not all that uncommon for half the breaker to trip but it does happen.

    Did not work for me. My element housing was firmly attached to the back so I did the complete tear down. It was not that difficult and allowed me to do a thorough cleaning. Also my housing had to be opened as the element had flanges that had to fit in place.

      Chip Saunders I have a WED8500SRO from around 2007. The clip holding the element housing in the back needed the housing to be raised more vertically than the drum would allow. If it had come out I'm not sure how it would have secured it back.

      I actually figured it out! The heating element housing has a lip that holds the housing in place. When the housing is in place, the lip sticks vertically up. In order to remove the housing from the front without taking the whole dryer apart, take the bracket off the front and turn the housing to the left and lift it up. It took me a good 15 minutes of turning and twisting to get it out. Hope this helps anyone else with the same issue! It was also easier for me to remove the wiring from the housing once the housing was on the floor of the dryer rather than suspended and close to other parts.
      p.s. thanks for the quick reply!

    • @cjmmjc2131
      @cjmmjc2131 7 років тому

      you dont have to take the box off, the element just slides out, but you have to really YANK it.
      I took some vise grips and locked them on the slid then tapped the vise grips with a hammer. the shock of the hammer blows really made it come out. once it gets started then just keep pulling

      This was a basic video, nothing special. I don’t edit so it’s not going to be a fantastic learning tool. Just trying to provide another view point to a common problem .
      As far as learning multi-meter usage, this is not the video for that. I would also argue that if your not comfortable using a multi-meter it may not be a good idea repairing electrical items.
      Please make a response video and let me Critique your work. Thanks for watching.
