    I think its funny when ppl bash the Ecoboost Stang for being a 4 cylinder when it makes the same power as a GT from just 5 years ago. It would destroy a lot of Mustang enthusiast's prior models.

      If the motor pulls timing, it's because it is detecting knock/detonation due to poor fuel quality or excess heat. I'd rather it pull timing to protect my engine then just let it go grenade itself. Either way, these are not major problems to anyone familiar with turbo cars.

The legroom, shoulder room, and even headroom is immense, and thats coming from a guy who is 6'3" 260lbs. My biggest gripe though is I find the hood to be way to high and I find my self not really being able to place the front end where I want it to be because I cant see past the freaking hood. • @EverydayDriver
      @EverydayDriver  9 років тому +153

      +Markus R - As you may have noticed in this review and elsewhere we get these cars from the manufacturer press fleets. Unfortunately that means they are often set up with every possible option and absurd prices. In the case of this car we hope you heard all the times we berated the price of this particular example as not the way to buy this car. This overpriced version was what Ford provided, but it is available in the price range we're discussing. (in fact, so is the FR-S, which was also over-spec'd here - and we mentioned that as well). If the Mustang had beat out all the other cars here, or was picked because of a feature only available at this $38k price then we would have mentioned it, but neither of those things happened either. We hope that helps a bit. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!

    • @TheCorpusDelicti
      @TheCorpusDelicti 9 років тому +15

      +EverydayDriver Maybe I'm too sensitive to bad qualitative methods, but the caveats offered still do not change the incidental effects of the differences in the models on the reviewer. Apples to oranges, as they say, but you do have to use what the manufacturers give you and I still appreciate the reviews.

    • @EverydayDriver
      @EverydayDriver  9 років тому +51

      +Markus R - We see your point and concerns here. But keep in mind that by the end of the comparison the Mustang didn't get away with anything (in fact Todd picked it last). Even though Paul liked it more, both guys were appalled at the price. We don't think Ford did itself any favors by having this car as their press car, but both understand their thinking and appreciate you understanding our situation. Also know that we're very glad to have you with us and engaging in a conversation. Thanks!

      You gotta think an ecoboost even with the performance package will still be under $30,000. I don't think all the technology packages like navigation, or blind spot warning or premier leather instead of just leather, rain sensing wipers, were displayed or affects the driving review. That was only advantageous when comparing interior quality. Price was up because it's a loaded ecoboost premium. Regular ecoboost will have a cheaper interior and still handle the same.

      @@DigitalRecollections haha I still have the car. I did all the bolt ons and a bigger turbo. It put down 380whp on e40 about 4 years ago. Since then it ran strong for awhile, stock internals. I used to drag race a lot and it held up. The transmission is the weak point, I went through 3 of them. The engine finally took a shit last November. So it held up for quite awhile. I swapped in a newer engine and plan on selling it after I get everything back to where it was. I had my fun with this car but it’s time to move on. They’re great cars for the money and the stock 1.6L olds a decent amount of power with supporting mods.

    OK, I just have to add my comments here. The guys are pretty spot on their comments. I bought my 2018 base model Ecoboost 6 months ago. Note, I said base model, for $21,500. That means a six speed manual transmission. It's black and I love it. I have about 5,500 miles on it and 2,500 of that was a trip to Wisconsin. I am in my early 60's and still ride fast Italian (Ducati and Guzzi) bikes. The Mustang is pretty much the prefect car for me. I do most of my driving around town, and they are right, if you aren't paying attention and are sloppy with your shifting and throttle from a start you can stall the car. That doesn't happen any more. And yes you have to work and pay attention a bit more from say a Focus, I had a 2002 Focu, but it's well worth it. It is a great car to go out and play on corners and drive hard, we have nice mountains here in New Mexico. But I spend 95% of my time driving city/highway, the Mustang shines on cruising on the highway. Rolling along at 90-95 mph on cruise control and it's just loafing and yes I did that going through Texas and Kansas. Reasonable gas mileage of about 27-28. Ford has a real winner with the Ecoboost Mustang, remember I bought mine for $21,500, talk about bang for the buck. A base model comes with a really nice set of base line goodies. And it's a lot of fun to use around town too, when you're first at stop lights it's pretty hard to not leave folks behind very quickly..... Top speed is limited to 120 mph....but that could be changed I guess. I am going to leave my car stock, it does everything I want, so why change it. I don't plan on putting it on the track so why bother, do I really want or need to go over 120mph... nah for me that's OK. And I really like the exhaust tone on it, I've heard the V-8's, and they sound awesome, but I am not sure I want to listen to them for hours on end. You really can't say that the Ecoboost Mustang is a wolf in sheep's clothing, it's a Mustang and it looks just like the 8's....but it's a completely different sort of car. That 310 hp really shines, turbo lag just really isn't there. It's nice to know when you punch it it really gets up and goes......not as fast as a V-8....but at 21.5K that's fine with me. Mine has summer tires on it and it's crap on snow, we do get some here in Albuquerque. But there are video's on UA-cam that point out they really need to have snow tires if you plan on driving in snow. I am glad I don't live up north any more:) Tom

    Great review. I've had the Ecoboost for about 7 months now and I absolutely love it. I'm assuming that the price of the tested model factored a lot into that 4th place rating, and I agree completely. Anyone paying 38k for this car is out of their mind. I paid 30k for mine. If 38k were in my range you can bet I'd be looking at the GTs.

    Diehard Mustang fan but I'm going to buy the Fiesta ST or the FRS next year. Much more affordable, cheaper insurance, better gas mileage, more fun that's more easily attainable. To be honest as well, I think owning a Mustang would ruin it for me just because I expect so much from it. I love the turbo punch from the Fiesta and it's practicality, but it still looks like an econobox in many ways. The FRS follows the "looks follows form" philosophy. It looks good, and it is good. The analog sensation of the FRS is what makes me so attracted to it. Plus the Japanese engineering always seems to find ways to surprise me. Throw a turbo kit on the FRS and you will never look back! Anyway you look at it, these are all great cars, in a great time for the automotive world.

      I've had my FRS for a little over 2 years, I have every mod you can do to an NA engine without opening it and it's pretty quick bro! Full bolt ons, aluminum driveshaft, light weight pulleys, light weight flywheel, rear seat delete, light wheels and some good ol E85! Very light and I have quite a bit whp over stock. I kill v6 mustangs, s2ks, focus and fiesta STs pretty easily(check out the vids on my page), modern V8s are pretty hard to beat with a little NA 2.0 so I don't even try to race them. Lol I'm very happy with my car if you're going to modify and even turbo the FRS it will make you so happy every day you drive it! Plus the community is great(there are some douche bags but the majority of the people are awesome).

    The Fiesta ST Was what it took to get me out of the RWD forever mindset. Once you drive one of these cars and take it around some corners fast it is just amazing the amount of performance you can ring out of the Fiesta ST. I have had several cars that where orders of magnitude faster. The fiesta is just as much fun in the corners as any of them and I love how easily and predictably the tail comes around without any fear of overextending ones talent. Its just plain fun and 35mpg on the highway and room for the family too.

I'm like WHAT? Why?!?! I thought it was sacrilege.Needless to say he bought a 2016 premium one.Driving home from the dealership I had a good head start in my 300 Hemi..I look back,there he is! I picked up a 2015 mustang ecoboost premium 6spd w/8k on the odometer 2 months ago. Mint....for a work car. I paid 22k. I never buy brand new because of that crazy 1st year depreciation. The car is extremely nice and not a watered down exterior of the 5.0.
    So I got the look of the 5.0 w/o a couple little hood vents and some simple grill work and chin piece, same interior, cheaper insurance, getting 38 mpg on the highway in wet/snow drive mode, and a boatload of performance upgrades that have made it night and day from the "quick" car it started out, including some Ferrada 20" wheels/tires. So I have a completely unique car as compared to a stock 5.0
    My days of shaving tenths off in the quarter are over and I got a Z06 if I need to go THAT fast. But this car is so nice that I'm going to give up on it being a daily driver. All this rambling, only to say its a great car and highly recommend. I'm an old svo guy, so it was cool to go back to that niche market.

    Compare a $25k Mustang to the others, not the $40k version.
    Ford was developing a DOHC turbo four in the SVO back in the 80's, but killed it because it was becoming faster than the V8 mustang (and that's just un-'murican). Makes you wonder what the Mustang could be today if they had pursued it.

    Crazy to put the Mustang with this group- it's a completely different buyer altogether. But, it does provide the angst for comparison. If you are considering any Mustang- you are NOT looking at the ST vehicles- for LOTS of reasons. But, if you are considering any ST- new, or, used- the WRX is also in the mix. The Toyobaru is a more selfish purchase, and, although a good dancer, doesn't offer much 'more' for tuning prospects- without another motor being fitted.
    Since most people get 1 car, it's gonna have to do many things over time. Leaving the WRX & ST's as most viable for different reasons. Personally, I'm so impressed with the Fiesta ST- it wins hands down for all of MY individual reasons: kids, commuter MPG, grocery hauler, dump runs, tunable (large & growing product line) & requires the least initial modification to 'just right'. Right now they can be had for $17 grand with 20k miles- in all colors & options desired- off lease. Not bad depreciation, but, better than $25-26 large brand new.
    Just one man's opinion, I suggest you make your own! Great video.

If I was young and all I could afford was a cheaper car that's not a real sports car but looks kinda sporty, then maybe. But most people don't buy small cheap ugly car just because it has a fast 0 - 60. Mind you, I've had mostly Trans Am's , until Pontiac went away. I constantly get rev'd at in traffic or camaros want to "ricer flyby" me on the freeway.. it draws some attention that I particularly don't want a lot of the time which is why I went with it as my DD. Also that's a premium wrx which starts at 28K.. and you're comparing it to a 38K mustang and talking about interior quality, you might as well have gotten the 2015 STI and compared it to the EcoBoost 'stang at that price..

    Always nice reviews. I bought a FRS (because of a Chris Harris review...) and i'm very happy with it. It's true that the engine is not so great and that it's not a highway car. But it's conformatable enough to be a everyday car (to go to work) and to put a big smile on you on every corner. Roundabouts will be the higlight of your day.

    What a great time to be a car buyer. So many terrific options from nearly every major manufacturer. Add the GTI and Focus ST to the 4 cars tested and it truly comes down to personal preference and features. Trying to argue which is 'best' is like arguing where's the best place to live.

      V8s weren't as efficient as they are today, plus the lack of an independent rear suspension was a turn off. I am glad for the changes Ford made. I think the next step is to get the Ecoboost on a diet.

    Been driving an ecoboost mustang premium for almost 2 months here. Took it on a road trip, drive it to work everyday, and so on.
    Pros:
    1. If you like fast cars (by fast I mean faster than most cars you see on the road, those grandmas driving 4 cylinders or soccer moms driving minivans, or just like a lot of people that drive cars to get them from point A to B), but you're on a gas budget like me, this is the ULTIMATE car. I drove a 310 horsepower car to work and came home today for a total of 55 km's (sorry I'm Canadian) and got 9 litres/100k???
    2. This is one of the fastest cars in the performance class and price range. I cross-shopped the ecoboost with the 2014 maxima and challenger v6 (I've never liked the entry-level camaros, so I didn't bother checking them out or doing research on them), this has the best value for the money. WRX in Canada is like 45 grand after tax. Believe it or not, a loaded Genesis coupe costs almost 40 grand, any person in the right mind would rather drive a Mustang than a Hyundai. And we all know evo's are pretty goddamn expensive.
    3. Dat interior.
    4. Loaded features.
    5. Dat exterior design. Seriously it looks likea 60+ grand car in person.
    Cons:
    1. High RPM torque is pretty mediocre
    2. Occasional turbo lags (not that often though) that sometimes make me feel like I'm driving my old Hyundai Elantra (but once it kicks in, it feels like a rocket)
    3. Exterior quality is not really the best. I grew up around Nissans as my parents loved them, I must say even Nissan has better materials.
    4. Tiny exhaust tips
    5. Last but not least, you don't get that V6+ sound
    Overall, I'm really happy with my car. I'd still beat most V6es in the 20-40grand price range in speed, exterior, and interior.

    I've either owned or driven every car in this episode. I'd definitely take the frs. It fits my driving style better. I am very aggressive in turns and the frs just feeds you all the info you need to know through the steering wheel. Also for a person like me that loves to drift I can say even in stock form it is amazing! Transitions effortlessly, hand brake works perfect, has just enough grip to keep control but not so much that it straightens out if you don't stay full throttle. I wish I still had mine but I'll just build a 240sx or sc300 when I have the extra cash.

  • @SacredCowStockyards
    @SacredCowStockyards 9 років тому +5

    In terms of stock performance, accessibility, and just plain fun, I think the Fiesta ST cinches it, just because of that early turbo punch.
    I think the BRZ/FR-S is the better car though, because it's just so modular. You can drift it like a hooligan anywhere without breaking the speed limit, you can learn to drive in it, and if you're a good enough driver to handle more power, the chassis is already perfect for it. It's long, low, and aerodynamic, so it can put down every bit as much power as any RWD supercar. It's light. It's got a solid Subaru engine under the bonnet, so it can handle plenty of forced induction (dyno stress testing concluded that the power limit of the stock cylinders is exactly 412.5 hp). It's got all the ingredients of a supercar killer.
    I used to think that the BRZ was unnecessary in a world where you could buy a used S2000, but I was wrong. The capabilities of this chassis far outweigh those of any other chassis ever made that's not hundreds of thousands of dollars more expensive. I cannot think of a single car that's as large on its wheels as this one, AND weighs less, AND has a smaller drag area, AND is built to modern standards of safety and solidity. It doesn't exist. And if it does, it's an exotic, foreign hypercar.

    I can't believe that you tested a Mustang against that level of competition without specifying a performance package for the Mustang. The upgrades to the tires and suspension are too significant to ignore. Please redo this video using the a properly equipped car.
    Also, the price you quoted for the Mustang ($38,000) is inaccurate by a large margin. I bought my Ecoboost on 3/31/15 for $33,064 (sticker price was $35,765). Mine has the performance pack ($1,995) and the 201A package ($1,765 - includes upgraded audio, memory seats & blind spot assistance). Your test car does not have either of those options. Mine has everything that Ford offers for the car except adaptive cruise control.
    I drove the other cars in your test plus the STI and Camaro SS & chose the Mustang.

      Oranje Renaissance Oh yea for sure, I never said they wasn't rugged or reliable cars. They are rally bred unstoppable machines. There is a reason they have had the exact same engine in the STI's for around 20 years. I guess me saying that the transmission was glass was a bit of an over statement. But I have heard that the 6-speed it much tougher than the 5-speeds. That if you plan on adding much more torque or drive it hard by dumping the clutch that the 5-speeds won't last. But of course if you plan on driving it casually then it will last you.

Six months later i have to say im happy with my decision.. Im pushing 400tq and 368hp to the wheels after tune, downpipe full exhaust and intake :) beats my old subaru ,..and any stock 15 Gt that cost 7k more :)

      Justin Donahue Paul is really the epitome of the "everyday driver." I find it refreshing actually. So many automotive journalists, Todd included, focus on what it's like to drive cars the way they were meant to be driven, which is not always the way they ARE driven. The FRS and WRX are dynamically brilliant, but they don't feel special unless you're whipping them around a twisty road. But in terms of an everyday driver, the Mustang is the nicer car to be in. 90% of the time, you're going to the store, or you're cruising on the highway, and for that, the Mustang is the best car here.

      Even in a straight line, it depends on who's driving. The WRX is a difficult car to launch perfectly because the AWD is not very forgiving if you miss your clutch dump. But once you master the AWD turbo launch, it will blow the Ecoboost away off the line. It's not even close.

      I don't know about a track. Many mustangs are built for the track, the Boss 302, gt350 track package, shelby gt500 track package. Not quite sure the wrx is better. Not to mention, basic mustangs can also be adapted to the track as well.

      Oranje Renaissance Just like the WRX, you can add many different packages to the Mustang, while you could put a track package on the Eco Boost, the question would be why? The 302, is definitely more expensive at $42,0000, no argument there.

    I went out to buy a GT 5.0 base with the PPbut at this point in my life I still require back seats and AWD where I live is a huge plus. The ST never came into the picture for me. I bought a 15 WRX and after owning it 2.5 mths I have to say it is a BLAST and it is the only car I have had that has made me crack open my wallet and start modding it. To end up with 300-320 hp is easy and that translates into about 260 at the wheels. With that power the WRX is just a riot and I actually love it. To date I have found the awd awesome in the dry on twisty roadss here in BC. 4 yrs down the road I expect i will be in a 5.0, but who knows at this point I am loving the REX

    EverydayDriver Couldn't agree more w/Todd on ranking the FR-S 1st overall! As someone who DD's the FR-S I can attest to everything you mentioned and every time I hop into the driver's seat I am instantly reminded on why I love it soooo much. The whole "Well, it's boring in anything but a winding or twisty road" argument is a bit played out as this thing can reach triple digits without a problem, probably not nearly as fast as the Ecoboost 'Stang or WRX, but we gotta remember that the FR-S is naturally aspirated. Call me crazy, but I'd take NA over boost 9/10 times. Yet another amazing review...kudos guys!
