  • This is the Part 2 video for how to build a walk-in shower. If you missed Part 1 (how to install the Wedi Fundo Ligno shower pan) check it out here
    • How to Build a Walk-In...
    For more home improvement tips visit www.homerepair...
    Today you'll see how to add Wedi building panels to stud framing. These bad boys make the waterproofing process SO MUCH EASIER versus using cement board.
    Wedi can be cut with a utility knife or oscillating multi tool.
    And each panel weighs about half that of a similar cement board unit.
    Here's the deal.
    If you used the Wedi Fundo Ligno shower pan it will have a dado joint in it.
    Cut your Wedi building panels to size. Apply a generous bead of the Wedi joint sealant to the dado.
    Embed the Wedi building panel to the dado and push it down. Joint sealant will seal this transition.
    Add Wedi screws and washers 12 inches from the top of the pan. Then add screws and washers every 12 inches along vertical panels.
    Apply a bead of sealant to the top of the first Wedi panel and embed the second panel on top of it. Pinch screws between the panels and spread out the excess joint sealant using a plastic putty knife.
    We have all the details on how to build a walk-in shower in the video using Wedi building panels.

Since I'm installing a steam room, it looks like Wedi also sent me the 2 part epoxy vapor barrier to apply. I haven't been able to find a good resource for application; have you guys applied the "Vapor Barrier" before? Any tips/advice would be appreciated!

We do however highly recommend talking to your local Wedi rep. Do you have their contact information? Pride and tile guys is a unbelievable thing. Mud pan, Kerdi,Wedi,...all work if done correctly. Not having experience with one method does not make your preferred method the only correct one. It just means your uninformed. To all homeowner's this video is spot on example of a great install. As well there is some spot on examples of kerdi and custom pour pans on youtube.
    If you want a curbless " the reason the floor was dropped" shower using wedi this is your video. This system is just as good with a curb and may be easier for diy'rs. On a side note not all the pans are 1200. They range from 500 to 1300 in my experiance.

    We just finished demo in our bathroom. The floors are concrete so it took time for us to notice the leaks. A large section of the drain pan was cut flush to the floor in the shower. Dry wall was used from four foot up. Then they just tilled over it. With the jet tub, they must of cracked the feed hose to the heat jacket on the pump installing it and it broke off over time. We are the lucky home owners that get to fix it! The builders used the space under the garden tub as a dump for dry wall they didnt want to carry out. What a mess because now it’s wet. Yay!!

    Probably not a super-critical area, but would the thinset interfere with the caulk doing its job of sealing?

      +Jeff Patterson yes. we had a glue on tub surround that wasn't properly caulked as well as water leaking over outside edges of tub which gave us a moderate mold problem. we decided to "mold proof" it the best we can this time around by getting rid of the drywall in that area and hiding wedi to drywall transitions with trim-either vinyl or rubber. we don't want the grout as a source for mold and our old house only has room for a 54 in tub so we r going with another glue on surround. we found "quick grip" liquid nails will adhere it to wedi.

    • @holyfamilyiluvu
      @holyfamilyiluvu 8 років тому +2

      +Jeff Patterson We found a good deal on the wedi bath surround kit here www.contractorsdirect.com/Wedi-US4000001-Tub-Wall-Kit and bought 2 so we could continue the wedi in front of the tub on the sides and behind the trim along the floor etc.

    @obiwan1062 6 років тому +9

    Been a tile setting for 22 years and I've seen things change over the years but one thing I will say about this method is I don't like the way the pan works. Two pieces that click together at the bottom of the shower floor and walls and then caulked. I would recommend using noble seal pan material on top of your preslope and always wrap it up the walls at least 8 inches and fold it in the corners never cut it so it works as a bowl so to speak. That way there's no way it ever leaks.

    • @HomeRepairTutor
      @HomeRepairTutor  6 років тому

      Totally understand your trepidation Obi Wan but this system works. The issue with using Noble Seal is it would void the wedi warranty. If the the pan or backer boards fail then wedi will send out a rep and have them inspect for manufacturer defects. If the installation is done per their specifications then wedi will pay for a new system and tile installation. That should give you reassurance.

      Where are you looking at prices? 48" x 48" is $682.89 including the drain assembly (and grate). The alternative... galvanized wire mesh, pan liner, deck mud, drain kit, water proofing system for deck mud pan, needed tools, etc... lots of needed skill plus a LOT more time. As a DIYer, which would you choose? I did a 3' x 5' shower with niche and curb for about $1050 and it was installed in a few hours. A traditional method was beyond my skill set and would have taken me at least 2 - 3 days at a savings of what? A few hundred dollars and two days of time. I call it a wash.

    Great demo. The Schluter -Kerdi shower base is thicker than the 3/4" Wedi (1-3/8: for a 72 x 48 shower pan). If my concrete base is 1-1/2" deep around the perimeter can I use a dry pack mortar to build it up 1/8" to 1-3/8" depth for the curbless shower base for a S-K shower base? If not, what should I use?

    I shouldn't have said all that. Bad form. We just employed a Wedi shower system on one of our jobs, and I have to say, it's worth it. While it seems expensive on the front side, and it is; the labor it saves makes up for it. Ready for tile in a couple of hours after plumbing. It's an easy choice.

      +robert michael no problem, we have to show the correct installation on UA-cam. And we’re proponents of the TCNA Handbook. But they don’t really address specific products. So that’s where these videos are meant to help. The speed of wedi shower systems helps the installer move onto the tile and do more jobs. And the system also gets the Homeowner a new shower in a timely fashion. That’s important for people who have only 1 Bathroom. Keep us posted on your projects. We’d be happy to also quote you different systems if you’re ordering wedi online.

    Looks great and easy for a DIYer versus a poured base. The drain attachment looks to me to just be a slip joint with a rubber gasket held in with a screw in collar. Is that all? I get nervous about gasket seals but I'm very confident with PVC or ABS joints that are glued with the proper cement. Maybe the Wedi system like the "slip" joint to allow some flexing between pan and plumbing. What do you think about my concerns? I have lower/crawlspace access so I could easily cement a ABS joint.

    • @HomeRepairTutor
      @HomeRepairTutor  6 років тому +1

      this drain installation shouldn't be an issue. Wedi has a 10 year warranty on the pan and wouldn't provide that if they weren't confident. Since you have a crawl space it'll be easier to do the drain installation.

    • @paulr7801
      @paulr7801 6 років тому

      Home Repair Tutor cool, thanks for the info and you're right about the warranty, they wouldn't offer it if it didn't work.....and the Germans are pretty conservative with well engineered systems. Do you have any videos or details on tiling around the Wedi drain? I ordered the Ligno, curbless system so will find out about the easy installation in a few weeks. Again, thanks for your series of videos.

    When tiling on the Wedi shower pan, can you use any size tile? We would like to use a 4”x4” tile but I don’t want to compromise the pre-existing slopes that are already fabricated into the pan.

  • @jimknoke733
    @jimknoke733 7 років тому

    Is there an "official" way to handle transitions between Wedi panels and greenboard? I'm not tiling my whole bathroom, so I have quite a few of these. Currently my plan is to run chair rail tiles or bullnose a bit over the transition joint and then to not bother taping the joint (since it will be hidden and I think the slight mound of joint compound might make the tile a bit harder to keep flat. Same thing when I tile up the (greenboard) ceiling -- the joint will be hidden.

    This system looks so ez, even a novice can do it, 2 question tho, I take it a membrane wouldn't be required? Also, what's the set up time for the Wedi sealant?

    • @HomeRepairTutor
      @HomeRepairTutor  7 років тому

      +47 Ronin if by membrane you mean liquid waterproofing membrane then you're correct, it's not needed as panels are waterproof. Although all the screws, washers and seams need to be sealed with Wedi sealant. The sealant takes about 2 hours to set and then you can tile.

    Do you think I can? I’m a woman 64 years old I’ve been begging my husband to please update our shower. It is in poor shape and very bad condition and I’ve been begging him to update our shower since we don’t have the money to pay somebody nine or $6000 to come in and just do our shower. Maybe we can do it. There’s a lot of UA-cam videos that are very self-explanatory that makes it easy for people like me to do it and he keeps saying no, he’s not doing anything so do you think that 64-year-old woman who has no idea at all how to do a shower do you think that I could follow your instructions step-by-step and do it?
