Still living your content Mark and very happy to see some new 1886 content. It's my favorite of all of them. My modest little collection of lever rifles mostly comprises of newer reproductions but this makes me want to start looking at some of the vintage iron. Thanks for the video!
Man I love those 86s ! That 40-82 with set triggers is nothing but amazing. You mentioned that King sight not being noted on the letter , I really feel that some things just didn't get written down. Maybe it was coffee break time , and they forgot , lol. I have a 1889 86 in 40-82 octagon 20 inch bbl std sights crescent butt that by the letter was a std rifle , but it also shows were it went from production to the warehouse, then it went back to production for a couple days , then back to the warehouse to be shipped. Everyone I've shown it to thinks it looks right to be a short rifle but there's no way to really know I guess . Regardless, its a great rifle and shoots accurately to about 75 yards. She's taken hogs and deer ... not bad for a 134 year old. Thanks for the videos and information. Always looking to the next !
It's fairly common that sights weren't mentioned in the factory records. In this case, it's unusual enough that I tend to think it would have been noted. It's also not a sight I've seen on other Winchesters of the era. It's a great sight, though.
Mark you have finally made the GREATEST VIDEO EVER! 86’s are my favorites and takedowns to boot. Oh my! Then you actually shoot them and in an area that shows some of GOD’s most beautiful handiwork My hat 🧢 s off to you. How would you ever top this one.
Glad to help get your week started out right. I should have showed that sight. It's an interesting one. I'll try to work it into another episode before that rifle goes to its new home.
@@thecinnabar8442 thanks, I would really appreciate that. An old gunsmith friend used to have a '92 that had a two-position flip-over foresight, but I've never seen a three-position foresight.
I love watching you shoot those old guns. Makes me wish I had one. I had a Winchester 22lr gallery gun one time but was dumb enough to sell it. Now I have a Brazilian made copy.
What do you think about doing a video on a model 71. Talking about the improvements done to it, like new proof steel receiver, angled locking lugs, bolt ejector, removal of the hook, etc. Showing the differences side by side, talking about the .348 wcf and it grain offerings and comparing to its predecessor .33 wcf. 348 being a necked down 50-110 at higher pressure, and .33 being a necked down 45-70 at higher pressures designed for smokeless. Then whatever you want to talk about, I just enjoy listening to people talk about history. Though, you could wait until you go to Cody to talk about it.
Those are real beauties, as you probably know the 1886 is my favorite lever action design, that 40-82 is a real special gun with a double set trigger and nickel steel barrel
Great video sent some lead down range in my 1894 pistol grip this weekend love popping soda cans at 300 yards with open sights the guy next to me was really impressed it was so accurate compared to his ar with scope he like the fact that it was open sights
Oh man look at that! Those are beautiful 86 take downs there! You've got one chambered in the sweet 40-82, Ive got 86 envy! Im hoping to be able to pick up a decent 86 in 40-82 this year.
@@thecinnabar8442 Thank you! Ive come up with a little more than 30 cases of 40-82 so far. The rifle acquisition will have to be delayed until well on into this new year. Im excited about the search and the eventual discovery though!
You’re right those 86’s are heavy. Decades ago Chet Fulmer had one for sale and it took me a couple of months to pay it off. In the meantime I found a guy that formed 38-56 rounds and ordered a couple of boxes from him. Well that 86 was sold by the weekend and luckily Chet had another one in the same caliber so I ordered it as well. That one sold in less than a week. Then about 2 months later the ammo showed up and I’ve never owned another 38-56
Your absolutely right, the 33wcf is a very underrated cartridge, it is actually my fav 86. I had a 95% Lightweight T/D in 33 I probably should have kept😏, I now hunt with a 33 in a rifle configuration, full mag, crescent butt, I really like that combination.
I think when your going to shoot obsolete calibers and set triggers of different configurations, you should give us close-up shots so we can see what your talking about. Show the cartridges next to a 30-30 or something we can relate to. Thanks for an interesting video.
It's even more expensive to produce. :) I've finally had to bite the bullet and monetize the channel just to offset some of the cost of the ammo. Sorry about the commercials that show up now.
@@thecinnabar8442 Watching commercials is a small price to pay for some of the best video available dealing with old Winchesters. Keep up the good work.

Great videos Mark, fellow Oregonian here, Sherman County. Didn't sell that one rifle? Would it be too much to ask the selling price? Keep those videos coming.
No kidding when you say the 1886s are a heavy gun, but they sure are fun! For me it’s a toss up on whether the model 1873 or 86 is my favourite. Guess I will keep shooting both until I figure it out. 😃

Good question. The set trigger is adjustable. Typically, it would be adjusted to a light pull so the shooter could choose between a standard or light pull.
I'm not a fan of relining barrels in more powerful cartridges than the pistol calibers. If it were my rifle, I'd try to find a good used replacement barrel or replace it with a new barrel that's had the finish aged.
Is the 33 caliber more pleasant to shoot I’ve got a Browning 86 and it kicks like a mule so I have got a cast mold for it and wants to load it down to black powder speed to see if it more pleasant to shoot
Wonderful video. Wonderful old rifles. Wonderful setting. How was the Vegas show? Just watched a video from Snapper. He showed some amazing old Colt pistols from the show. Did you acquire anything to add to the collection? Thanks for another good one.
Has to be pretty difficult finding .40 caliber brass for the 1886. Really wish there was an option between the modern .38-55 and .45-70, but the closest thing that I know of would be the .444 Marlin. Resizing .45-70 to .40-65 is an option I guess. Perhaps a .45-90 can be resized for cases longer than .40-65.
Yes, finding brass for many of the older calibers is a challenge since Jamison Cartridge Co. folded. I certainly hope company will step up to fill that void soon.
Ergonomically, it makes more sense to set the trigger with your right hand, but a highly skilled old-time Winchester smith once told me that the Winchester close coupled set triggers should be set from the left. Because of the geometry of the parts, they're more likely to be damaged with pressure from the right side. I should have mentioned that, but it slipped my mind. Good catch.
What were those calibers other than the 45-70 and does one have to be a reloader to ( hunt with/just pleasure shoot) these rifles, iam new to this channel and being curious.
The 33 is the most accurate of any of my winchesters, I don’t think it’s available unless you hand load , the 45_70 can be bought in this area at the wal-mart store
