I love the real world issues with parents. It was so believable. And now I know why!

Laundry parent wanted to speak to the Dean about it. I'm not kidding. I died inside.

Well, time for a reread of The Ivies! Also, totally agree that $16 is outrageous for a lip gloss! Nobody I know would spend that amount of money on a single makeup product, even if they had it!

The sad thing is cosmetics are so expensive in some places I didn't think it was expensive. I'm not rich but a drugstore brand anything in the pharmacy here is like $20 minimum

From a poor background here, and yes, 100% a $16 dollar lipstick would cause immense hesitation. PS: I love that you share your dev edits. It's so helpful for someone writing their first novel. :)

    SPOILER WARNING:
I love this book a lot! Just finished reading it the other day and I have to say it is very interesting!! I’m using this book for a project I’m doing in school! This is the first time I have actually finished a chapter book and I love the wording you used and how it kept me reading! It really makes me wanna read more! I love the ending and it was so unexpected in my opinion, but the clues flew over my head completely😭 I thought it could’ve been Ethan because of the ledger, but I thought Avery could’ve been too obvious, but keep doing what you’re doing! PSSS: this book should definitely be a series or a movie, I would love itttttt

I have to agree with you, I think $16 for lip gloss would've been a lot for me as a teen and even as an adult. I love how you got the names of places from people you know and places you've been. That's a great trick.

OK, I screamed when you said that particular lipgloss costs $16.
    "SIXTEEN DOLLARS????"
As a poor-poor person, yeah, that is a lot. It's giving me "What could a banana cost? Ten dollars?" vibes.

ok THANK YOU. I felt gaslit by the note haha. Like... I'm not *that* out of touch ha. Like, now that I have UA-cam income... I buy luxury makeup. But even three years ago? Four? It was a painful purchase. And if I'd been using my mom's credit card? There might have been a murder. (Meanwhile, me buying Pat McGrath and crying)

Loved this! This probably isn't an Easter Egg, but more of a nod that I appreciated, but I really loved the Labyrinth (1986) mention in the book! It is my favourite movie of all time and I literally squealed when I read this reference in your book 🤩

This book was such a fun read. I live in western Massachusetts, right by Northampton, and it was fun seeing this area from a new perspective. I did have a chuckle that you had them go to Starbucks in Northampton- very LA of you. I have set foot in that Starbucks maybe twice and both times were to meet up with people from out of town who said “let’s meet at the Starbucks” and I didn’t have time to tell them “nobody from here goes to Starbucks let’s go literally anywhere else.” So in a way, it fits well that that would be where they went.
Truly though, I had so much fun reading this- having gone to a boarding school as a day student faculty kid, I got a really weird view into a world that I fully did not feel like I belonged in and it seems like Olivia was in a similar boat. I would not be surprised if you looked at my high school’s website in your research process.

I used to teach at UMD. Maryland is one of the most beautiful places I've ever lived. Great memories all around.

Which is really more expensive: $16 lip gloss that you'll use until it runs out, or $6 lip gloss that you wear three times before getting something else that might not sit in a drawer until your next move?
( This goes double for anything sold as an EdC, EdT, or Parfum. Price, cachet, and quality mean nothing if you can't wear the stuff! )

My favorite easter egg (I guess it's an easter egg, or a 'if you know you know' kind of thing) that took me a little bit until after the book that it clicked (spoilers)
Was Avery dressing up as Lexa for the Halloween party, and then coming out as a Lesbian. I was just sitting there like 'Oh, of course she dressed up as Lexa.' lmao!

$16.00 IS expensive!! These little easter eggs are fun though! I know some of them because I think you've mentioned them in some other videos or live shows.

I got a video request --- Can you explain how to write (punctuate) a conversation where there is - well, picture it this way - two or more people are in the same room talking to each other with someone on speakerphone as part of the conversation. Do you write that dialogue is italics, quotes, both? I think many writers would be interested in how that is written correctly. An idea

Are you worried that Covid will date the book or do you feel like that Covid is going to be mentioned as frequently as 9/11? Like common culture?

    • @AlexaDonne
      @AlexaDonne  2 роки тому +2

I actually think as we move away from COVID the book will become more ok with how it depicts it. I was off by a year, more or less, to how things are depicted at school (except for masks), and so the suspension of disbelief works better. Just ignore that it's set in December 2020 and you're fine!
