I love it- the disclaiming of Trithemius regarding what "nonsense" necromancy and magic is alleged to be sounds exactly like the introduction in my copy of A.E. Wait's "Ceremonial Magic". In that heartwarming little volume, (as I'm sure anybody reading this comment already knows,) Mr. Wait ties himself in knots proclaiming his pious and oh-so-Christian reasons for editing and publishing a grimoire of straight-up demonic magic, and he used the same justifications that Trithemius did, i.e. "This work should be studied to illustrate the intellectual and moral futility of such magics... Christians must be vigilant, yadda-yadda-yadda..." It's hilarious! I am not a Goetic thaumaturgist or necromancer myself, but I have known many people of that persuasion, and I have known many Christians as well. I have no doubt whatsoever that I will always prefer the company of the former to that of the latter. All the best, N.

Alot of my earlier reading list was very similar! Anything ancient based on earlier writings and most everything middle eastern. Finding any of it in English was insanely hard to find. Most were in French, German,Latin, and Arabic alongside Egyptian papyrus that may or may not have been deciphered properly and that doesn't even include The Mesopotamian area.
Ahh us normal people urging to figure out the unknown. It sucks cause the true ancient sacred texts that actually tell us something may have been destroyed or is being hidden and preserved. Either way it’s evident that to have a true understanding it’s not through what you know it’s through WHO you know.
Last halloween i took an experiment from a 15th century necromancy book "forbidden rites" (by richard kieckhefer) The one where it conjures the illusion of a castle. So there i was in the fields with the talisman and reading by candle light. 😂 it was cold out, and when i tossed the offering of honey and milk to the 4 directions and said the invocation, i legit started hearing the sounds one might while in a midaeval castle. It was akin to the feeling when you are in an astral temple in a meditative trance. When i left and started walking home, when i would look back to where i had asked the castle to materialize, the longer i gazed there, the clearer the impression of a dark castle emerged. Fun stuff.

I shudder to think where we'd be without those unafraid to throw caution to the wind...perhaps devil may care would've been a far more wry choice. & remember: moderation in all things, even moderation. Regarding the omission of Ars Notoria from the list (referred to from 15.32), Trithemius does devote some critical remarks to 'artis notoriae' at the beginning of book 1 chapter 2 of Antipalus Maleficiorum ('De secundo maleficarum genere, vano & superstitioso, quod implicite illuditur a daemonibus'). The Liber florum celestis of John of Morigny ('Ioannis monacho de morigetato') also gets a mention.

Hello Dr. , are you familiar with this Afro Cuban religion Palo Mayombe? it IS Necromancy and throughout the years I have noticed that some simbols we use are very similar to all those found in medieval necromancy documents. It would be interesting to know where this (maybe) connected in Cuba with Congo slaves , did they brought it from Africa and from Africa went up north to Europe at some point ? Thanks !
The opposite. Creol religions like eg. the most popular one - Vodoo, were highly influenced by freemasons and freemasonry was obviously big part of European occult tradition, the oldest sigils similar to these mentioned by you came from hellenistic era and culture.
