Is Milwaukee MX FUEL Equipment - Worth The Investment?

    For the last 2-3 months we’ve had the MX FUEL 14” Cut Off Saw and the Core Drill on our commercial project in Boston.
    One crewmember said how much he liked the idea of 100% certainty that the saw will start, no matter what the temperature is at the site. There was no more pulling, choking, wasted time, and colorful language needed to start up the cutoff saw.
    Stan’s field experience tracked in agreement with the factory data. He had four fully charged batteries available, and cut 28 linear feet of street asphalt with three batteries depleted fully and one battery with 50% charge remaining.
    Each of the crew that used the saw was impressed with the electric motor's torque and power, many of them remarking that "This Thing is a has the same cut speed as the leading 2-cycle gas saws.
    Part of the challenge with remotely located asphalt cutting is how to provide a consistent flow of water onto the blade. In Stans case, he had the M18 Switch Tank Water Supply Kit.
    This tank holds 4 gallons of water and contains a battery-operated pump. The quick connector coupling on the end of the 10 feet of hose clipped onto the 14 "cutoff saw with no issues.
    Without the water supply tank the work crew would have resorted to their “let’s bang this out,” approach and splash water from a 5-gallon bucket onto their cutoff saws. After using the water supply the crew was impressed with the entire equipment setup, and joked about their Fred Flintstone methods.
    The first task was to core two holes in the manhole that allowed two additional conduits to go from the transformer secondary feeder cubicle into the distribution manhole. Stan told me he was curious to see how easily the crew set up the Milwaukee equipment in a constrained space.
    Stans electrician used a Milwaukee 4 1/2" wet core bit to make the holes. They were working remotely from building services, so the M18 Switch Tank provided the water service for the coring operation. Like the laborers at the road cutting site, the electricians also loved the tank/pump equipment.
    The ability to adjust the flow rate to the correct amount meant that they would not have to fill the tank so often.
    Once the electricians positioned the equipment, the coring proceeded with no issues. During the operation, the electrician experienced two of the safety features of the core drill.
    First, the clutch disengaged the motor when the core occasionally bound up. The first time that happened, he looked up, smiled, and said, "That's impressive!"
    Coring is often absolutely DREADED because of the kickbacks and bind ups. People have even lost teeth before.
    The AUTOSTOP was another feature that he liked. When the motor goes from a state of being loaded to a sudden unloaded condition, the motor shuts off. That way, coring blindly into a space means that the user knows the core drill will not be cutting cut into something unforeseen behind the wall.
    It took only a couple of minutes to core the first hole. In less than two hours, the electricians made the four cores of the manhole. The electrician then started to lay in the conduits. Late in the afternoon, the work downstream of the manhole was ready for the electrical inspector.
    Having the MX core drill and stand allowed this project to proceed immediately and do productive work the same day that the need arose. This Milwaukee equipment saved Stans project from delay and having to wait two or three days for a specialty coring subcontractor to arrive on site.
    Investment:
    An investment in Milwaukee MX Fuel equipment is a lot of money for any contractor. The MX drill with the stand is just shy of $4000. The MX cutoff saw with two of the batteries and charger will run online around $2,500. Is this kind of investment justified for a commercial contractor. Stans says YES.
    Here is why the MX Equipment is Worth the Investment.
    Stans current job has a liquidated damages clause that would cost his company an amount that equates to $2,095/ work day. With the Milwaukee MX Fuel equipment, he avoided wasting three days on the roadwork to start the test pits.
    He also avoided another three days of delay in starting the electrical conduit work.
    Stan calculates, that having the Milwaukee MX Fuel equipment available to go with minimal startup timing was worth $12,600. That value is just shy of 2 times what the equipment initially cost.
    Many Many More Uses
    Stan is 100% sure that both of these pieces of equipment will be used repeatedly during the next 25 months. So right out of the box he saw that the investment was more than paid off and the rest of the use will be additional justification for having made the investment in this Milwaukee MX Fuel Equipment.
    Both of these use cases were in remote locations that did not have an external power sources or water feeds available. With this equipment system, the work proceeded as soon as we showed up with the equipment.

    Awesome story.
    What I have realized recently is that battery power tools are holding its' value. Even after 1-2 year of sitting around it is possible to sell them with no more than 10-20% loss, as power tool renew cycle is not that quick like cars or phones.
    We only need to select a battery platform wisely.

    Hi Rob - I work for the largest GC in Canada and we've been testing the MX Fuel line. Feedback so far has been "it's powerful, but the run time is a big limitation". Fuel is endless, batteries are not. Down time counts while waiting on batteries to be charged as well. For one-offs, great - but if you have some serious cutting to do it's just not there yet.

      Packing extra batteries is the solution on this. (I do home remodeling / repairs and general maintenance, not larger companies or projects like yourself). For larger jobs I know I'm gonna be wearing out my M12 fuels with, ill pack 2 or 3 extra batteries and cycle through charging them and using them. They use a lot of power fast, but also charge up fast as well. I sanded an entire 20x10 shed with my M12 Fuel Multitool just cycling through 2 batteries back and forth. Every time one would die, I would go out and have a green light on my battery charger. Shit works like a charm. Keep on keeping on man

    This was an excellent example how spending the money now can saves you time and money in the future. It’s basically an insurance plan.
    This is America so we could afford luxuries, especially if making money, saving time and keeping safe. And we can always work and make that money back, because the country is prosperous.

    So there are several different ways to look at this given your scope of work.
    I worked for a fencing contractor and probably drilled 10000 holes over 15 years in residential/commercial/industrial work.

    • @2chipped
      @2chipped 3 роки тому +1

      Sometimes I pumped water from a pond using a marine bilge pump,sometimes siphoning from a 5 gallon bucket on top of a ladder.
      Several resorts were right on the beach,but water and power were 500 ft away .
      So you had to wheel a generator 1/4 mile to drill 1 or 2 holes,and that was it.
      The mx coredrill would've had an ROI of 1 year from lost time.
      Obviously this is a specialized industry.
      If you build fence and you are still using extension cords,you must be in the middle of a big city or have more time than most.
      Jobsite problem solving (common sense) is found less and less these days.
      There is solution available, you just need to think tactically .

    What’s the noise level like on the cutoff saw? I’m assuming much less then a gas saw? A quieter concrete cutting saw definitely would have it’s place.

  • @jo9732

    I’m not a contractor but I don’t understand why this is better than a remote generator and extension cord to an electric saw. Maybe it’s a safety or noise thing but a remote generator can be placed 100 feet away and provide power no? That said. These tools are badass and I like that Milwaukee is pushing the envelope.

    Am I missing something or you just explained to us that an overprice tool is better than not having any tools? What if your friend bought the much cheaper and more practical tool instead? People aren't saying that MX Fuel is useless, they're saying it's way too expensive for what it is.

    • @toddfratzel3569
      @toddfratzel3569 3 роки тому

      I think the guys that think MX are too expensive are not on projects that can benefit from the investment. There are many, many commercial projects where these tools will pay for themselves in a heart beat. It just depends where you're working. I recently had a commercial fit-up for an eye doctor's office. Very tight schedule do to SBA financing and the doctor's need to relocated and be operational quickly. We discovered an issue with the sewer lines inside the building, couldn't get a concrete cutting sub for about a week, do we wait and delay the project or find another way? This was a 6" slab, that small M18 wouldn't do it, using a gas saw wasn't an option (other medical offices in the building). So MX is the perfect solution for that problem.

    • @MrArcticPOWER
      @MrArcticPOWER 3 роки тому +1

      @@toddfratzel3569 How about an electric saw that doesn't need a new battery every 5 feet and cost a fraction of the price? I'm a contractor and I know how employees can treat our tools, so I aint spending 3 grand on that thing. Think about it this way, for that price, you can get a gas power saw, a couple of electric ones AND a generator.

      Not sure I understand your comment. I'm a general contractor, these tools are a big deal. That cordless cut-off saw will be HUGE for interior slab cutting. For cutting inside a building right now we have two choices, hire a concrete cutting sub (who will use a hydraulic saw) or cut inside with a gas saw at a huge risk to everyone. It's super expensive to hire that sub if you have a small area to cut (short plumbing trench, new footing, electrical conduit trench, etc). My guys have one of these and it will get used A LOT. Jump in a man hole and cut an opening (with a gas saw that is AWFUL). Sure, maybe these don't fit your daily work, but I know lots of GC's that can hugely benefit from a cordless solution for cuts in tough locations where it doesn't make sense to hire a specialty cutter.
