I'm an American who _very_ badly wants to try out a Kremlin console. It's fascinating to me and I support anyone (but Souljaboy) who wants to enter the industry with a game changer.
Realistically it's gonna be some chinese knockoff with russian branding on it like it was for most russian brands for last 15 years or so. But knowing russian ways, it will be like this: 5 billions of rubles will be spent on development, of which 20000 rubles (around $100 nowadays) will be spent on buying chinese console and 200 rubles on buing colored tape to put on top of that console to make it RUSSIAN.
And then they will present it to president along with some cheap game demo cobbled together within 2 weeks and will get 5 billions more for mass production of which only around 2 million will be realized and everything else will be ugh... spent on other expenses like project lead's new car.

Let's face it, we are no longer in the 90s when each company had designers and engineers who made the circuitry of their consoles, now all the consoles are cheap mini PCs from Ali Express, with AMD chips and some cheap ddr3 ram (Nintendo) just change the case and the price, any government or small company can order a batch of consoles to be made

The series X and PS5 have been around nearly 4 years now. There certainly exists better hardware nowadays. And Russia has a lot of excellent software engineers. It's possible that they could come out with something. Whether they will or not is a different thing.
There's no need for custom hardware anymore aside from case/controls design. Look at insane amount of gaming UMPCs coming every other month. Even Switch did only two things differently. Detachable joycons with motion controls and ability to switch from docked mode to portable on the fly. Otherwise it's just a rather boring tablet. And speaking of PS5 and XBox. They are losing the war with PCs and mobile phones. And from what I heard what they are planning to make is ARM-based lightweight portable device. And the other is pretty much another Linux-based x86 machine. Why reinvent the wheel when steam deck clones and Android portable consoles just work so well. You take a Linux distro, design some interface for gamepad or take AOSP and add some gaming features and you're golden. Especially if controllers will be decent. The biggest issue nowadays is lack of good games, most big budget AAA games are so bad and indie scene is going too much into copy paste stuff. Out of *hundreds* of games there will be maybe 2-3 really good and 10 passable.
Russia itself is not much of a console gaming culture, just like the rest of Eastern Europe. PC gaming has always been more popular there; only Sony managed to get a 'decent' foothold, but nothing near the Western European levels, let alone the US/Japan. You can see that easily by checking what kinds of games were popular there (Heroes of Might and Magic, Gothic, Jagged Alliance and its various clones, various RTS games such as Civilization, FPS games etc.)

It used to take 6 months, 8 months, a year, 2 years.
Now, some games take 4 to 10 years to make.

The west's strong video game market gave birth to Nvidia, fuelled research and development into chip fabrication, communication, and its infrastructure. This makes perfect sense given the current dependency on the west to supply cutting edge variations of these things. There is also a cultural and security element that's currently dominated by the west and their allies.

This brings back memories of Elektronika games (Soviet clones of Game&Watch) and Didaktik (Czechoslovak clone of ZX Spectrum). In reality, this is going to be some re-branded Chinese knock-off console with unlicensed ROMs.

As a gamer this is interesting. Although the odds of them going from nothing to a PS5 / Xbox series X console by next year is about the same odds as me making my own Battlefield game by next year.

I guess you're talking about 16nm 8 core 2GHz ARM CPUs or 16 core Elbrus CPUs, right? And speaking of the latter. Their ancestor CPUs had performance levels of P-75 in... 1990 lol. In fact one of EL-90 developers later worked on Pentium MMX later lol. And yeah, RISC-V too. Not to mention that China and most of Asia sell everything. And anything for home use will likely use some Chinese SoC just because it's very cheap. China is honestly more likely to come up with something interesting, but China/Russia are more so PC gaming cultures, rather than console gaming cultures (like the US/Japan). Also, mobile phones are a huge factor nowadays. That's probably where the real innovation will happen, but of course - we'll see about that.

They managed it during the cold war with various consumer electronics (especially in the hi-fi world). Remember that China are on side as well. It's possible. They also have access to the linux source code as a building block.
Go go Russia, as someone who works with Ukrainians that have fled Ukraine to not fight NATO's war and have no hard feelings toward the legitimate defensive actions that Russia has undertaken I really hope this will work out for them.

I don't see how they would fail at it. If they really want it they could just reverse-engineer everything if they throw enough resources at it and engineer their own versions. Copyrights and patents etc why would they give a damn for those if they are cut off with sanctions.
they are respecting patents. The problem is that they still don't have the means to have exclusive technology, we know that the state is inferior to the private sector in research and development. So if they can get their own APU and engine without help from China it will be a noteworthy feat. There are many ways to fail, many state consoles were made around the world and they all failed, even ps5 in gray market can prejudice them.

good news then - most AAA video games are not made in the US. Most AAA shooters are made in Northern Europe - from Battlefield to The Division. AssCreed is all France and Canada, just like all the other Ubisoft games. US has Call of Duty and whatever dated crap Bethesda does nowadays though, lol.
I just play old games ngl cause my PS5 is literally filled with remakes, remasters, PS4 games, exclusives I didn’t play during 8th gen cycle. I feel like the only reason I bought this was for a few games and some haven’t even released
All these jokes, but you can easily build a PS5, Xbox X level machine using off-the-shelf PC based hardware, that is readily available and easy to program for.
There are decent Russian made games out there already. What could these teams come up with given enough state support, and not held back by the alphabet people of the west?
