Thank you Grant for sharing info....I have lost track for settings since I stop shooting pic's. Now that I have started back I love using "manual", to me there is a BIG difference, and you teaching me some good info I am out and about again, learning all over and practicing, taking notes.... I have (3) cameras, Lumix Panasonic DMC-F228, Olympus E-620 and Fujifilm Finepix S200 EXR... Luv photography outdoors and natural portraits. Looking forward to learn more of your techniques. thank you so much again appreciate your time and effort and knowledge.

Very interested in your videos. I haven't shot my gx9 manually, I'm menu deficient, so will get out the gx9 and go through your video again and give it a try. I'm shooting a full spectrum conversion with and without an externally mounted visible bandpass filter. I had pretty much lost interest in the camera until I saw head shots I had taken with the bandpass filter. Better than my Canon! And what's not to love about shimmering hot pink videos taken around the neighborhood :)

Never used the CinelikeV before but will try to use it to see its effects. Good tip.

I disagree on a two of these settings: ISO 100 on a Panasonic M43 will give you very little in term of smoothness over ISO 200 as it is not native for the sensor. You are just killing your dynamic range for literally no gain: the only reason to get up there is when you are taking pictures of documents you need to enlarge, with in studio illumination, where the DR of the camera is meaningless (3-4 dB at most).
Second thing, shooting at Noise Reduction +5 is what phone sized sensors do to make "night pictures". You will destroy most details in your image as soon as light is not ideal. Some time a little grain preserves details much more then a full on "smoothing".
I never tweak any setting in camera above +2 because the effect is too destructive for the image.

I learned from your comment and will likely shoot at 200 for my slow setting. However don't overlook that by shooting at ISO 100 you're gaining a slower shutter speed capability. Great for shooting stills at slow shutter speeds for movement, like a stream or waterfall!

Just realise you are from Oz. Great place for some landscape photography especially in the outback. I love going around in spring to shoot the wildflowers especialy in WA. The GX9 is great for all those walkabout photography.

I miss my gx9 should have kept it. I think I got angry after the g9 and g95 received the last firmware but the gx9 didn't. Might get another one. The Panasonic menus are amazing. I also liked the monochome settings especially the grain effect.

I wonder if you might consider doing a video on how you use autofocus on Lumix in general or GX9 in particular. I suppose it depends a lot on the subject, but do you prefer 49-area, custom area, pinpoint, etc., and do you use the touchscreen when focusing?

  • @stevegilroylifeincostarica1100

Hey great video. Question...you implied that the CineV gets you the best jpeg file?? Or only j-peg file? Why wouldn't the Vivid ot other settings accomplish the same things? Thank you

    • @grantrobertdavies
      @grantrobertdavies  Рік тому

Hi Steve - Well, I guess they could :) it’s all just about experimenting and playing around with the profiles to see what works for you - for me I like CineV and the results it give - However I’m continually trying other settings.

Hello from New York City! Please help me understand. Your shooting at low ISO. What is the purpose of in-camera Noise Reduction (NR)? When shooting at ISO100, why is Noise reduction set to +5? Thank you for your informative video.

The thing is how to get those set photo style settings straight to Lightroom. It’s not that simple, as by default all your jpgs along with the RAWs are being assigned an adobe standard color profile. The only workaround I have found so far is to look under other profiles/ in camera profiles, and then choosing which one you want for that particular photo, which it does not have to necessarily be the one you shot at… I understand that this workflow give you extra control even over your jpg, but, ultimately I would like to have nice and almost good to go JPGs with the color profile already applied. I dont want to manually apply that color profile on the computer on my jpgs; that what the Raw file is for, not the jpegs…I wish I can get my jpgs be with the look I already set in camera, without the need of manually applying it in Light Room. Is there anyway of achieving this on the import? Please advise if you know how. Thank you very much! Go GX9

I just discovered that if I put my G2 on MF instead of AFS or AFC the enlargement to focus appears automatically instead of having to push the button. It has no focus peaking. Can you access focus peaking with the GX9 automatically if you put the focus selector on MF?

  • @beppeveltri

Why NR at +5? In the various M43 forums, users recommend NR at -5 because the noise reduction is too loud and invasive and erases the fine details.

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to assign the dials functions. I assume a lens without aperture overrides assignments but why aperture setting on both dials? I want ISO on rear dial. I have to press iso on D-pad then rotate rear dial.
    Is this not possible?

@@grantrobertdavies Ive owned many systems- first time Lumix. I love the little beast. I’m getting used to just tapping the iso button and left/right d-pad. There is for some reason a big limitation on dial assigning. They say nothing in the manual about aperture vs non-aperture lenses and how it affects controls.
