I try to live that way.. I was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer almost 3 years ago. As of January this year I'm cancer free. Life is short, and it's the little things that matter.. Thank you for doing this, and Keep On Keepin' On.. Love y'all
I have sung this song to my Son ever since he was a Baby. He will be 46 yrs, next month, and every year I now post this song to him on Facebook on his Birthday!!!
The backstory for this song why it's created is because the singer's grandmother died the same time as one of his guitarists' mother and they made the lyrics by sharing stories and creating a song
Being 62 now and raising 3 boys in the Texas farmlands, I am beyond impressed seeing how this song impacts you, just like it does the rest of us. My own mother (Rest her soul) gave me this same message in 1971 when we were very poor. I listened, and I passed it on to my boys. I find peace in knowing my sons will do the same. It's a message, it's a ballad, It's a moral culture. Those that tear up actually get it.
Pure emotion was my reaction the first time I heard that song so many years back and now, at 66 years old, I still get that same feeling.... and I still feel every time we cover it in our band. There are times I struggle with the vocals as it really hits home so hard when I think of my own two children. His mother was a very wise lady. Just as mine was too.
Yeah it's like I wish music 🎶 was a required subject in high school and that this song was required listening with a discussion period after the song about what each class member gets from 💭 about the lyrics 😊😅😮😢😂❤😂😊❤😊❤😊
I was 20 coming home from a car auction when the news came over the radio. Being raised in Florida, seeing them growing into the best southern rock band. I actually pulled off the road and cried.
it was a sad day in music 2 days before my birthday they are one of favorite bands i was in in the Army at the time and ALL the radio stations were playing TRIBUTE to them everyone was listening to them on their car radios R.I.P. LYNYRD SKYNYRD
Thanks for reacting to this song. This reminds me of some of the talks and advice my Mom would give me. I am 58 years old and my Mom passed away over 6 years ago. Every day I still remember or use something that she taught me.
My mom raised me on these exact words, I've lived a simple life not wanting anything that was out of my reach. She raised me to be happy with what I had but if I wanted something more don't be afraid to work for it. Before my mom died in 13 I went to see her and had the most honest talk with her that we ever had. I thanked her for The many adventures we went on and I thanked her for the quiet times. I think they're for teaching me honor, respect and patience. And then I thanked her for my life.... She died 2 months after that. But I'm glad for that final talk
Holly cow, this classic message or song will forever live. This song is gonna move anybody to tears right away no matter we how heartless anybody may be..
Lynyrd Skynyyrd led the way for the Southern Rock genre of the 1970's. The years where they peaked in popularity and recorded their best songs and albums was from 1973-1977. After the tragic plane crash in 1977, the band did re-form 10 years later but without Ronnie Van Zant, who was their lead singer and wrote their most classic songs, they were never the same. "Simple Man" is one of their best songs. Other great Lynyrd Skynyrd songs for you to react to are "Freebird", "Sweet Home Alabama", "What's Your Name", and "Thar Smell". Out of the songs I mentioned, the next Skynyrd song I think you should react to is Freebird. It is considered their signature song and a rock masterpiece.
That is a rabbit-hole both need to go down. LS coined the term Southern-Rock! Most of there songs that Ronnie sang were not written down , at least not by him, just sayin'. Not only that but Charlie Daniels and him were very good friends. Charlie Daniels wrote about Ronnie. The song was Reflections. Very somber song with a lot of emotions!
These guys are Southern rock! “Freebird”, “Sweet Home Alabama”, “Give Me Three Steps”, and my favorite “Saturday Night Special” are a couple songs of theirs. Fun fact: Ronnie VanZant’s little brother Donnie is the lead singer of another southern rock band, 38 Special. Which is another band I highly recommend you guys react to! 🤟🤟🤟
Ladies Current band named Shinedown done an excellent cover of this classic. Interesting note is that Shinedown played at local bar owned by the widow of Ronnie Van Zandt (who died with some other members in tragic plane crash) in Jacksonville, Florida (hometown of Lynyrd Skynyrd). As both of you going thru rabbit hole of the band, backstory of the band. Back in late 60's to early 70's, members of the band were in local high school in Jacksonville, Florida. Back then, men worn long hair in sort of a protest of the war in Vietnam. They had long hair, and local coach named Leonard Skinner who was a hard ass to those who violate the rules in high school. Skinner hated men with long hair. They were in trouble with him all the time. Then members started a band and playing at local clubs. They wanted to create name for their band. Then as a protest to Coach Skinner, they called themselves as Lynyrd Skynyrd, play on his name. But LS gotten well-known, and they kept the name. Many years later, both band and Coach Skinner mend fences. They invited Coach Skinner onstage with them at a concert. Coach Skinner is mentioned at Rock Hall of Fame in Cleveland.
So I was working at that Drive-in Theater when this happened. Charlie Daniels was playing at MRF (Mississippi River Festival), and he announced the plane crash. He immortalized it in a song. I couldn't get off work to go to that concert which was only 15 miles from my home. You brought back some memories. Thanks. 45 years, now I really feel old. 🤣
Thank you ladies. A beautiful reaction to a beautiful song. Lynyrd Skynyrd is the standard bearer of Southern Rock, with an exceptional amount of spectacular music, so I can recommend a plethora of songs, but one will do for now, and that one is "Free Bird." The studio version (1973) and the live version at the Oakland Coliseum on July 2nd 1977. Thank you kindly.
Now you're reacting to my favorite band ever ! I grew up listening to these Good Ole Boys and Girls . I remember the morning after the plane crash . One of the worst days in music history . And Long Live Skynyrd Nation !
Ronnie Van Zant (and his co-writer on this song, Gary Rossington) grew up on the poor streets of Jacksonville FL in the 1950's. They knew hard times and lived some hard times as well. Ronnie was inspired to right this song upon the death of his grandmother. Don't get me wrong from my next statement, I'm a father and my own father was present for all of my formative years (and beyond). The presence of father's is critically important to the healthy and normal growth of a child. But it's MOTHERS (and grandmothers, etc.) who form the core and the soul of a FAMILY.
Thank you for reacting to this timeless classic. I was lucky enough to see Lynyrd Skynyrd at Philadelphia's JFK Stadium on June 11, 1977. I was 16. The concert lineup was the J. Giles Band, Dicky Betts and Great Southern, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Peter Frampton. It is a concert I will never forget. I would like to suggest that you check out Shinedown's cover of this song. It's an incredible vocal performance and a tribute to the original.
I was at that concert also it was outside that was the last time I seen them I seen the original band 8 times Damm they were the greatest rr band from the USA
This song should be played to all teenagers both male and female (sorry just the 2 sexes. I'm old-fashioned) before setting off into the world to live.
You apologizing for doing nothing wrong, shows you the power of such narrative. It's also the reason why people self censor. This is a FREE country speak your mind or beliefs
Nice there ladies, that is one of their best and a southern rock classic. Another great band is the Allman Brothers, they also have song great tunes and trail blazed this genre. Try Dreams, Not My Cross to Bear and Whipping Post from the first album, great pioneering work. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
This song makes me think of Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt. The reason is that 'Hurt' is a man's reflection on his life and the choices he made and regretting them when his time is near. The man in Black is another must react to from Johnny Cash.
Ooh you need to listen too the version Shinedown does. The lead singers voice is incredible and I feel they do not get the credit deserved. He does an amazing version of this song. I heard the lead singer of Shinedown saying they do not do it live often as it is a tribute to someone and it is a hard song to get through for them.
Love this song. There is an incredible cover by shinedown, with magnificent vocals. And although I prefer the original, because I think the vocals align better with the message of the song, I also really appreciate the cover for what it is.
This should be their signature song. No offense to Sweet Home Alabama, Free Bird or anything else but this song is amazing. It wasn't even a freaking single.
basically, don't discard a man or a woman purely due to materialistic deficits, the real gold in a relationship is between two souls, not combined bank accounts.
When I was around 7 or 8 this came on the radio when we were on a drive and said this is your song, from me. Now quit asking if we're there yet. Ok maybe not the last part. She died recently and this I know I'm not the only person to think this. But 😭 is about the best way to describe what this song does to a person who's mom has died or a mom thinking about her son.
I saw them in Anaheim at Angels Stadium a couple months? Weeks? Before the accident. I remember hearing about it that night and in the morning I woke up to Freebird and heard Ronnie Van Zant had died.. it was a very sad time I was a big Lynyrd Skynyrd fan.
Thank you so much for this! Skynyrd is my favorite rock band ever. I can relate to most of their songs, and all of their instrumentals are amazing. I’m sure you have had requests for “Freebird “. If not, I’m requesting “Live at Oakland Coliseum “. Absolutely amazing!
You are both a joy to watch and you are dabbling on the fringes of rock. I hope you take a gamble one day at dip your feet into the wonders of rock and the joy it can bring. So much depth and storytelling its is hard to know where to start so i suggest Pink Floyd, Comfortably Numb (Pulse 1994) as it links the guitarist David Gilmour to Kate Bush whom he mentored when she was an unknown. Good luck on your journey x
You might want to check out Shinedowns version of this song. They definitely did it justice. I like the live version best, but the studio version is pretty awesome as well.
For a lot of working class boys dad was either the cool parent or the fun parent and he spent way too much time at work. So which parent did those boys get their values and moral compass from? Especially for first born boys. Momma. I know this from first hand experience. It was my mom who taught me never kick down on anybody worse off than you and a lot more
You can't sing about God now. You can't sing about a woman who is happy being both making a work life and and a home life. We've lost men being a man. It's crazy to me. This song is just son, take care of your family. So odd to me how that went away. Sons take care of your family. This isn't rocket science.
I saw them in Greenville SC the night before the plane crash. 45 years ago and I still get emotional when I hear their songs.

Lynyrd Skynyrd was the epitome of Southern rock. And this song has a special meaning; it almost brings tears to my eyes.

The vocals of this song were from Ronnie Van Zant, who died at age 29, but his words are timeless and so wise. Rest in peace.

Lynyrd Skynyrd with the luxury of multiple leyd gytarrysts.

Yes, must watch the Shinedown version. Just incredibly well done.
Ronnie Van Zant the singer apparently always said to friends that he wouldn’t live to see 30. He died in the plane crash aged 29.

I shouldn't but this one makes me well up every time. Such a great message.
