Love watching these how to's a simple job like this well done can save lives! I'm guilty of not getting in there with a toothbrush but it's nice to see we both use the same brake/clutch cleaner lol.
David if a rear brake piston pops it's dust cover is it still safe to use till it's next caliper strip down? Also as the old dust seal is intact can it be re used? And can it be refitted without splitting the caliper and removing the piston? Thank you Rob
It should be possible, but yes it might be fiddly and you might need to experiment with piston fully in and partly out and maybe turn the piston. The latter needs the tool. Otherwise just split the calliper- messy but effective. Some people put the dust seal in after the piston but I reckon it’s a bit harder.
@@MotoMirius I did it but couldn't do it with the piston in. Luckily it was the side where the banjo goes so I could easily push the piston out and polish it. The dust seal on mine sits in its own little alcove just like the liquid seal so I doubt you could squeeze it passed the piston and under the lip into the alcove and get it seated right.i was just gonna split the caliper. The hardest part was bleeding the back brake it was unusually difficult for some reason, it took 2 attempts and I'm still not happy with it. I wouldn't of been able to do half the jobs I do on my bike if not for these videos so a very big thank you again 😁
@@randomrides I'm really glad that you figured out the solution. Soon you won't need these videos any more which for me has to be the biggest success of all!
Hi. I've been watching your vids which are a great help and was wondering if you could kindly give some advice. I have cocked up a brake clean on my 1250 bandit. I was using brake lever to push the pistons out a bit but overdid it and one popped out. Fluid leakage but the reservoir is still above minimum . I was able to push the piston back in but could I have damaged the calipers in any way and what would you recommend please. Many thanks ant
Hi Ant. You aren’t likely to have damaged anything and so long as the piston was clean and went back in square no harm should have been done as the pistons are designed to come out like that. Watch the fluid level and you should be fine. Remember to put something like a pad in there next time to stop the pads coming out. 👍
Moto Mirius . hi. panic over and many thanks for your reply. this is my first attempt at servicing the brakes. it's been a bit stressful and I've made a few mistakes but hopefully nothing serious. I'll know next time. keep up the good work. cheers ant
Ah now there is a saga. I bought the XT for commuting but then moved a whole lot closer so it was all close quarter filtering. While the XT had a great turning circle, I had to slip the clutch because of the lumpy power delivery at walking speed. So I changed it for a DRZ. Then I was told I was moving to another office which would have meant a 20k commute every year so I changed the DRZ for a 650 Bandit which is where I am now as a commuter bike.
The 650 Bandit is my commuter bike Garry. The 1200 Bandit is the rat/ survival bike. Most of the build you see there was done by a mate of mine who is rather good at modifying bikes. There is quite a bit more to come on that as I've ideas I want to make happen but I'm constantly challenged by keeping on top of too many bikes!
Hi David I have got it now how long have you had the 650 bandit?at he moment I have 12 bikes, I love the ts and Dt bikes and have my GSXR750 sling shot.I need the build a new work shop this year either wood or block. the xt600 videos are great for me for my xt600I would love to have a xt500
I'm trying to slim down to three bikes. When I have more, they don't get ridden and clutter up the shed. Twelve would be a full time job to ride and keep on the road. Glad the videos are useful.
Always satisfying fitting new pads 👍🏻
Indeed. Just need to bed them in before the MOT.

KISS is what it's all about isn't it? Just keeping on top of stuff keeps it easy. Cheers.

Hi Rob, If the dust cover is intact then should be no issue as it does happen. Just clean and put it back. Skäl. David
@@MotoMirius can it be done without splitting the caliper and piston because it's too tight gap to try to shove it back into ?
Thanks

So you only got the bandit ?
How long did it take you to build you rat bike ?

Hey Dave nice bit of maintenance very important at this time of grime and salt 👍❤
Cheers Springy, yeah it was starting to make me twitch that I hadn't been into the calipers for a while.
