    After I saw he show the respirator mask, I kinda got all excited, just imagining her sitting at her desk, making beautiful, intricate dolls, and then she's adding a coat of sealant and someone walks in while she's wearing that respirator mask and then they freak out xD

      Lauren Parker I know, I've seen her room tour. She could do that, but I'm guessing she opens a window or something and that it doesn't take a whole lot of sealant for one coat. Multiple coats, yes, but I'd guess by the time she was done with doing the eyes or something, the smell or vapors might have dissipated enough for her to apply another coat in the same room

    • @NicollesDreamsShop

      +Kyle Sinadjan depends where you live. Sometimes buying online is the only option. There is nothing that replaces a sealant, you will have to use it if you want the materials to work properly.

    The two polychromos pencils are not watercolor. I'm assuming it doesn't make a different with those specific ones, but do you prefer watercolor ( example: albrecht durer by faber castell ) over polychromos/non watercolor?

    Finally I can see why your Faber-Castell "water colour" pencils are round and not hexagonal. I've always thought "They look like Polychromos, why is that??" and now I see, ok, they ARE Polychromos. But Polychromos are oil-based and not water colour pencils? I thought they shouldn't be used for faceups? >

    • @Zenzika
      @Zenzika 8 років тому +1

      Yes, I had the exact same suspicion. Polychromos ARE oilbased. The Albrecht-Dürer are watercolor pencils. I have asked Andreja a few times on instagram but I never got a reply. I am wondering if you can actually use Polychromos as well or if she was just mistaken that they are watercolor.

    • @Alayses
      @Alayses 8 років тому

      Zenzika
      Well, I used Albrecht-Dürer pencils and didn't get a very good result. Since I have a lot of Polychromos, I tried them on my Monster High dolls (since I only made them for myself) and I liked the great results. So far I haven't seen any side effects, but I guess I wouldn't use them on BJDs, since it's a different material? >

    • @Zenzika
      @Zenzika 8 років тому

      I am really not sure. I get nice result on my Monster High dolls with Albrecht Dürer. It helps when you dip just the tip in water... I just would never dare to use the Polychromos on my BJDs... I am scared to death of stains...
      I mean in the end everyone can do whatever they like to their dolls, I just thought about customers, when you actually use Polychromos on face-ups... Maybe someone else knows if they stain on resin or not?!

    • @Alayses
      @Alayses 8 років тому +2

      Zenzika
      I now bought the derwent watercolour pencils and with those it works well.
      Yeah it would be nice to know if it works with Polychromos or if they stain...

  • @SakuraTenshi101

    This is super helpful! However, I do have a couple questions. I don't know if face-ups are going to become a consistent hobby for me (I would love if it could be though!), and I already have a lot of art supplies from college that I'd like to put to use now that I'm graduated.
    Do you know if Grumbacher Matte Workable Fixative or Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Coating will be good alternatives to MSC?
    Also, is it ok just to get a face mask instead of a respirator so long as I spray outside in an open area? Then once I know if this is something I'll be doing often, I can save up for a respirator :')
    Thanks

  • @0LasUchiha0
    @0LasUchiha0 7 років тому

    OMG perfect I have lots and lots of pastels and watercolours because I'm artist, so it's perfect! But I have a couple of questions:
    1. What do you do if you are wrong? (for example, my pulse is not very good and when I ink in my drawings, most of the times I do something wrong :/) Does exist anything to erase the mess?
    2. Do you use any product at the end? I mean, I didn't understand the process. First you seal the doll, wait for it to dry, and then you paint over. And you add some gloss on the lips, but the rest of the face? It stays forever and ever or you don't have to touch it because if not it will be erased?
    That's all, I hope you keep on working (because you are so freaking talented!) and to answer my questions! Thank you so much, lady!

  • @FriggAndFreya
    @FriggAndFreya 8 років тому

    Thanks! That was really helpful. My biggest issue though is the sealants and the glosses. I have an airbrush and it doesn't seem to seal correctly (I have the liquitex sealants you recommended in the other video and watered them down as you showed). I don't know what is going wrong it always comes out sticky and that never goes away. I am not using any pigments or pencils that are oil based either.

    • @NicollesDreamsShop
      @NicollesDreamsShop  8 років тому +1

      +Frigg And Freya it could be that you apply too much of it, it has to be a very light mist, this is why we have to do it multiple times so that we are 100% that we cover the whole head.

    • @FriggAndFreya
      @FriggAndFreya 8 років тому

      Awesome! I'll try again when I get a chance and only lightly apply it. Thanks.

    Thank you so much for the video, it was super informative and I'll make sure to remember it when people ask me about materials in the future.
    I was totally under the impression that Polychromos pencils were oil-based so I'd avoided them in the past, looking now though I have no idea where I got that idea. I look forward to buying 100000 of them in the future XD

    • @Sillie82
      @Sillie82 9 років тому

      +Ohbeesneeze As far as I know Polychromos pencils ARE oil-based. They're def. not watercolor pencils (they're actually water resistant). That being said, they're wondeful pencils with a lot of color pay-off.
      FaberCastell does have watercolor pencils, but they're called Albrecht Durer. :)

    • @Ohbeesneeze
      @Ohbeesneeze 9 років тому

      Ahh that's what I was thinking, I got a couple of pencils from both the Polychromos and Albrecht Durer ranges to test out, it should be fine as long as I never use the Polychromos pencils on resin, I don't want it to stain but that doesn't matter as much with Monster high ^^

      +Agent Knopf I just realized: You show Polychromos which are oil based and based on what I read, one shouldn't use oil based colors on BJDs? I realized this before trying to work on my doll and got the Faber Castell Watercolor pencils instead.

    Hi Nicolle! I have a msd size bjd that came with its own default faceup and I've decided that I'd like to add on to it a bit, however I'm too nervous that I'll mess something up and ruin the doll so I'd like to try and practice on something more inexpensive first. I was wondering if I could use the same methods to repaint a Barbie doll face as practice, and if it would actually work. Thanks!

      Regular colored pencils are wax based and may harm your dolls. Watercolors are not wax based and can be washed off without staining the head, which is why they are ideal.

    Should you also be wearing the respirator for the gloss varnish?

    • @NicollesDreamsShop
      @NicollesDreamsShop  6 років тому

      if you used a lot of it, then yes because I'd assume it would emit a strong odour which could cause you headaches. However because I literally use less than one drop of it every month, you can't really smell any of it - at least not from the brand that I use. The main reason why you must use a respirator with the spray sealant, is that you could easily inhale the actual sealant airborne particles when spraying and get that nasty stuff stuck in your lungs.

    I would love to start, but I wanted to ask, with brushing on a Matte Sealant, and using pencils or watercolors, does the paint( or pencil, or pastel) move around? I've had a problem like that, not on doll making but in general, and thought I'd ask! Also with good ventilation(And protection of breathing "holes" XD) would a spray matte sealant be better?xx

      +stunningkurry i do it 3 times before I start drawing, many times in between the drawing process and a couple more times at the end. There is a lot of sealing involved to get this kind of colour intensity.

But I had a question about the pencils in your video. You showed Polychromos pencils, which are not watercolor pencils but an oil based colored pencil. (I currently use them with my watercolors for illustration), so... those will work in this method, the oil isn't an issue or anything?

    Hi, I was wondering, if I use a non toxic sealant (liquitex matte medium) Will I still need a respiratory mask?

    • @rawrmyuuchan
      @rawrmyuuchan 9 років тому +4

      +JokarGirl Unless you're using it as a brush-on, you should always use a respirator. Any time you use a spray-on sealant, you have airborne particles of paint that can settle in your lungs and make you ill. If it's a non-toxic sealant, though, you should only need a particulate filtering respirator, rather than a vapor filtering one, since there are no harmful vapors. :)

      +Genta I actually have way less problems with bubbles using the brush on sealant than with the other ones. Also when I use it, it takes the same amount of time to dry as the spray sealants :O Apart from that I absolutely agree with rawrmyuuchan always use a respirator, just because a sealant is not toxic, it doesnt mean it is healthy for your body to inhale it.

    May I ask, for the sealant,Is it possible to use something else instead of the respirator?

    • @NicollesDreamsShop
      @NicollesDreamsShop  7 років тому +1

      I don't believe so, respirators with the correct filters are what will give you the needed protection. The regular dust masks that you can buy in most stores do not work against sealants so make sure you read through the Respiratory thread carefully to purchase the correct item.

    • @happyjacki626
      @happyjacki626 7 років тому +2

      The main reason why a dust mask wouldn't work is because a dust mask is for dust. I do recommend wearing a dust mask when working with pastels, as pastel dust can be harmful in the long run (something I have formed as habit as being an artist in general) but the problem with sealants is that they release toxins in the air that a dust mask absolutely cannot protect you from. Respirators are made to shield you specifically from these, by using filters. I picked up a respirator for only $35 online but Lowe's sells the same one too (I don't remember the exact model number but it was by 3m). I'd highly suggest for your own health to please invest in one. If you read through the thread that was pictured in this video there is a testimonial from somebody who had done faceups for a long time without a respirator who now suffers permanent lung damage. It's no joke.

    • @scythescythe884
      @scythescythe884 7 років тому +1

      you can get good good respirators for as low as 15$ if you go to ace hardware when they have sales, or a 2 for 1 deal its rare but getting one is SOOOOOO WORTH IT!

    I have also had problems finding mr super clear, the sealant I have found in the uk is called americana which is also an acrylic matte sealer/finisher spray, I also can't find schminck pastels so I have purchased the best quality ones the art shop stocked, I have derwent and faber castel pencils to use and have a few mh dolls to begin with, I have tried so many times to remove the factory paint with cotton balls and acetone but it smears the paint, I found that using cotton buds (q-tips) was easier but I have a question about the removal of smeared paint and the black staining that the paint leaves, do I just continue to use acetone and cotton wool to rub this away? it doesn't seem to be coming off, what is the best way to remove factory paint? do I just hold the pad on the eye, do I rub it off or do I gather it up into blobs the scoop it up? is it normal to take a long time removing the paint, in videos people seem to remove the paint really easily and cleanly in a few wipes! This is a brilliant back to basics video, will you be doing a wig making tutorial soon? also which stores do you buy your wigs and clothes from?

      +onetrunerd You can do it, but be aware that the paint will chip very easily.
