That's quite the bug out kit in your "under trunk"! Now I'm thinking we should keep our trailer similarly stocked in case we had to leave in a hurry. Definitely nice to have a full-size spare when you're going offroad.
Yes, I’m doing that tomorrow after major damage to an almost new tire. Just hate those donut tires!! And it’s for gas milage? Heck, my driving never saved gas 😂.
I have no idea what kind of spare is up under my grand caravan (though I did have the garage take it out and check it last time I had my summer tire installed) these under the vehicle storage spaces and very mysterious, so it was good to see how yours is done. I like all the stuff stored on top - using every inch of space there!
Glad you had the garage checked it - you definitely don't want to find out your spare has a flat when you need to use it! Thanks! We think it's great for storing emerg-type stuff that you don't need quick access to. Keeps things neat and out of the way :-)
Nice video and a pretty cool bug out stash too. If I may add to your idea, one should always use exact match rim and tire for a full size replacement cuz a steel rim is a different weight than that of a factory aluminum rim causing conflicting information/input into ECM causing a DTC code and after a while, damage to front wheel drive transmission more so on an AWD system. When you have a flat tire the last thing you would want to worry about would be unnecessary transmission ware/damage. You would just want to change out tire and get back on your way to worry free damage free driving ASAP. End of rant lol
Hi Chris and Emilie...Great tutorial.....where did you find that full sized donut rim as i cannot find it anywhere on the internet...only find the one you replaced. Thanks.
Not sure on the exact weight but it’s definitely heavier. Our vehicle says it can hold the full sized tire weight, but every vehicle and tire is a bit different, which is why we say to check with your dealer or mechanic first.
This was good especially when you go off the paved roads. We actually removed our spare and tried making it lighter so it saves MPG. We tend not to do heavy off roading and have AAA hope we never have to use it but just in case.
Totally - you gotta do what makes sense for where you're driving. We end up in places so far off cell range, the walk to call AAA would be very long :-)
@@ChrisAndEmilie That's my fear is being stuck without service. We aren't too adventurous quite yet to explore lol Hope you guys have a great week and stay blessed 😁
AAA won't always go off paved roads. They will go to some campgrounds, but if you're boondocking, you're probably going to be on your own. One off-=road flat would quickly eat up all your minimal gas savings.
@@ericcsuf Yup - it’s so important to have the stuff you need to be self-sufficient out there. We like to have our emergency and repair gear around to hopefully get us out of sticky situations ourselves.
Donut spares are one of the worst inventions ever. Not only are they dangerously worthless to drive on, but they never get rotated into use, so by the time you do need it, it's often dry-rotted. With a real spare, I prefer to change my tires in matching pairs with the best bad tire or the lonely good tire becoming the new spare. Don't just let it sit forever.
Great idea to keep the real spares in rotation! The donuts are really only worthwhile if you're already in town and can call a tow truck anyways. When you're many miles out of cell range a fully functioning (and regularly checked!) spare is so important.

Haha! You never know when you’re going to get stuck somewhere - or just want to stay a bit longer than planned :-)
My daughter thinks I’m over doing it carrying similar emergency supplies. So glad to see I’m not the only one.
I Traded Up To A "Full Size" Spare For My 2013 Pilot And I'm Really Glad That I Did. Nice Video !
Awesome! It's great knowing you have a full-sized backup when you need it!

Maybe I missed it, but wouldn’t you want the front of the new wheel facing out, so you could check the air pressure from time to time?
I believe there is only one way that you can store the tire. We take it down to check the air pressure.
Nice video. What year is your pilot? I did this with my 2010, but wondering if the next gen (post-2015) will hold a full size also.
We have a 2017.
Hi Chris and Emilie...Great tutorial.....where did you find that full sized donut rim as i cannot find it anywhere on the internet...only find the one you replaced. Thanks.
We just picked up the cheapest rim we could find for our tire size at Canadian Tire, though they should be available at any tire shop.
How much more weight the full sized spare tire has than the original spare tire? Is the spare tire suspension harness strong enough?
Not sure on the exact weight but it’s definitely heavier. Our vehicle says it can hold the full sized tire weight, but every vehicle and tire is a bit different, which is why we say to check with your dealer or mechanic first.
thanks for the video i needed this,, did you have any problem with the extra weight of the new rim and tire?
No problem! We think between the new tires and the full size spare our mileage has gone down, but we haven't seen any other issues.
Very informative,thanks
Thanks for watching!
can you tell me where you got the rim? what size? i'm looking for 2017 pilot 18 inch rim. thanks.
We picked up at Canadian Tire. We just selected the cheapest, simplest one that fit. It was about $70.
I have an OEM hitch on my 2017 Pilot EX-L. Curious if this would still work, I imagine it should.
Interesting - let us know how it goes!
Did the full tire fit with the OEM trailering?
Do you think an original rim with tire will fit in?
We used the original tire. We changed the rim to a cheaper one of the same size so we could keep the original ones on the vehicle.
Nice! Can you provide a link or part number for the spare wheel?
Thanks! We picked it up from Canadian Tire: www.canadiantire.ca/en/wheels/pdp/steel-rim-wheel-black-0096295p.0096379.html
Does anyone know if the Pilot computer can monitor the pressure of the spare tire just like it does with the other 4 tires?
For our model, only the 4 tires are monitored. We check the spare’s pressure manually.
Just replaced my spare for a full size today!!!
Awesome!!
What Honda Pilot model/year have you got?
It’s a 2017 EX
235/65R18 is good for honda pilot?
Not all Honda Pilots have the same size tires. You can check with Honda or the tire installer.

So AAA has to tow your car to a tire shop for a simple flat? What if the shop is closed at night? That does not sound too smart.
