  • Located on the western edge of Tennessee, approximately 40 miles north of Memphis, Fort Pillow State Historic Park is rich in historic and archaeological significance. Steep bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River made this area a strategic location during the Civil War. The fort was originally built by Confederate troops in 1861 and named after General Gideon J. Pillow of Maury County. It was abandoned in 1862 due to the Union Navy’s advancement along the Mississippi River. The area became a state park in 1971.~~copied from the website

My ancestors fought in all the Colonial Era wars, Indian & Revolution ( from 1620-1812), but both my lines from Mass. & Virginia had headed west prior to the Civil War and had settled in Oregon in the 1850s. So I have no direct line ancestors who fought in the civil war, but my GGG grandparents had siblings who fought for the North, (my Hemenway, Morningstar, Hite, & Holmes lines) and for the South, ( my Walker, Hudnall, Mumford, Chisman, lines). Looks like you had the park all to yourself. Thanks for sharing Malinda 👍 Fly butterfly fly!

Sean, I did have the whole park! Lol I loved not having to fight with the crowds :D With this short trip I just did from St. Louis down to Northern Mississippi along the Great River Road, I have gotten so much more interested in history. To find out about my ancestor history and the roles played in the Civil War should be next on my list. But, isn't it crazy how family siblings fought for different sides. I did read a lot about that as I visited different museums along the way.
