- Statement by Amal Clooney, International human rights lawyer, on Sexual Violence in Conflict during the 8514th Meeting of the Security Council.
Barrister Amal Clooney reminded Council Members that the crimes committed by ISIS against women and girls “are unlike anything we have witnessed in modem times.” She added, “ISIS controlled territory the size of the United Kingdom and ruled over eight million people. More than 40,000 foreign fighters from 110 countries are estimated to have joined ISIS’s ranks in Iraq and Syria. But the question of bringing them to justice has barely raised a whisper.”
Clooney gave the Council four options to dealing with crimes committed by ISIL, including a referral to the International Criminal Court, setting up a court through a treaty by like-minded states who believe in justice, setting up a court through the European Union, or a hybrid court set up between the UN and Iraq such as those done in the cases of Sierra Leone and Cambodia.
Clooney told the Security Council, “Excellencies, ladies and gentlemen: This is your Nuremberg moment. Your chance to stand on the right side of history. You owe it to Nadia, and to the thousands of women and girls who must watch ISIS members shave off their beards and go back to their normal lives, while they, the victims, never can.”
Not all of you being surprised that Amal is good at her job. Stop underestimating women just because they're pretty.

I was a lawyer myself for more than 8 years practicing in criminal and corporate law. She is beyond amazing. The way she delivered this made me speechless. So proud that this world has her.

Not surprising, he probably hears about these testimonies every day. He might even be writing notes or doing something much more productive than her. Just because it is a celebrity like Mrs Clooney, why should he have more respect for her than for any other speaker. Yeah the UN is a big waste of funds and pretty much accomplished nothing, just like the EU. The UN just serves as an ego trip for world leaders, celebrities, and elitists alike to yell about their opinions without taking much action. It is very difficult to pursue legal action when considering the vaste cultural differences and laws of other countries as well.

I really appreciate the strength of Nadia. Her courage to come front for the truth and justice would definitely be helpful to the voiceless people. Amal Clooney did her best to advocate for the human rights. She has really inspired million of youths.

I'm a Lawyer, more than 20 years of practice and I have to Say that Amal is an Amazing Lawyer, I'm so impress, the way she deliverates is impeccable. I loved her in this case.
Amal speaks eloquently. Law requires a person to be an excellent reader. Being educated in the British system with its high standard of English language, speaking calmly from prepared notes,reveals an excellent education and good standards of the profession. But Amal didn't "win" anything for 'her' clients - she just spoke on behalf of the less linguistic client about crimes occurring which should be addressed through courts.
Please tell me which stream of law is most rewarding in monetary terms...what type of lawyers amake most money....please guide me

I love the fact that she is so articulate, and professional. She needs to be protected, for I, and possibly others, need her legal assistance...today.
What has been allowed to transpire has been CLINICALLY insane, and criminal ! Last, I am glad that Nadia, and others are FINALLY receiving the justice they so deserve ! The most important issue here is ; where does the USA stand on the problem of Violence against women here and around the world?
No one here says anything about violence against women...we’re too busy throwing hamburgers at each other and having meltdowns over Trump.

The US is against violence against women. Of course. The US is facing it's own internal crisis at the moment of a fascist movement attempting to take power of the country by thwarting the democratic vote. As selfish as this sounds, the US government needs to focus entirely on it's own nation right now since it is at a point of crisis. The work that Amal and her colleagues are doing is SO important because it collects evidence for FUTURE prosecution. FUTURE because ISIS is not finished yet. Trump gave them a 2nd life when he let Turkey annihilate our Kurdish allies. The Kurds were running the prison camps holding the ISIS prisoners. When the Kurds were murdered, 1000+ ISIS prisoners ran free. This was in 2019 or 2020. So they WILL make a resurgence and the world is focusing on stopping them militarily. Once the threat is truly well and over, THEN the criminal trials for war crimes and crimes against humanity can begin. But again, that is in the future. Amal and her Team are collecting the evidence now for the future trials. The US.... should help as much as it can militarily but overall, it's focus and money should be on it's own nation because it is on the brink. As a Canadian, I need to be selfish. I need them to focus on themselves right now. I'm sorry.

I read a book of nadia murad. What a strong woman she is. I wouldn't survive. Not to mention fight against these monsters.
You survive. You might find it hard to live again though. Merely vegitate. But with speaking up and fighting for justice may also come ability to process and learn to take your story with you in a way it's possible to start living again as a survivor.
Nadia Murad appears calmer, grounded and more composed than Amal Clooney. Imagine enduring the murder of your family and being enslaved and repeatedly raped and managing to retain your sanity. Amazing. She looks neither bitter nor broken. No make-up or glamorous hair and designer clothing. A simple modest white top and a serene expression. Human courage runs parallel with our capacity for evil and calculated barbarity.

In Canada, criminal court proceedings have been greatly expedited by having a centralized computer system where the court, police, lawyers and bailiff can all contribute to & see if all the document ducks are in a row to proceed. It puts pressure on the missing pieces to shore up their part. Cases that are ready to go, go.
That's awesome. The U.S. needs this kind of system very badly.
And to any women out there denied a platform I can only say that this message is indicative of the atrocious crimes these men have committed, but that it is every woman’s right irrespective of status to pursue justice!
