Dear Laurie very very sorry to hear about your injury 😢! I wish you a fast recovery and be able to kitesurf as soon as possible! But don’t harry first you need to be strong! After 12 years in kitesurfing 2 years ago, I got my meniscus tears during kitesesion. After surgery, doctors said it would be 12 months recovery (for more then month I couldn’t walk at all) , but I would be able to kitesurf much earlier even if I couldn't do ski downhill. The special sportst braces really help to return to water. And also you are doing it very important job to tell about this to less exercisers like we. The solution is total strapless foilboard or surfboard, or I use half strep like sky hook it really prevents fro injuries like this. Once again, stay brave and positive, be more patient, and wait for more videos, maybe about theory or gear. Always, what you speak about is absolutely professional and beautiful.
Hi Andrew, thank you for the well wishes :) sorry to hear about your meniscus tears - those can be brutal!! I suspect I have a partial tear from years ago, and kiting with a knee brace makes a huge difference. The half strap hook is a great solution too - I think that's what I'll use for foiling or no straps at all. Thanks again and all the best!
Hello from Siberia! Our entire group of kiting friends wishes you a speedy recovery health. I am your colleague in misfortune. Had an ankle fracture on his right leg in 2021. I still remember that ankle fracture. Don't give up and believe everything will be fine. 💐
Ugh, Laurie... that really sucks. The way you built it up, I was waiting to see some gnarly wipeout with your ankle facing the wrong way... but it really is amazing how one little jump with an errant wave can result in such great injury. Hope to see you sometime this summer back on the water!
I was in similar situation when I wiped out and my body went 1 way but my ankle was stuck in the foot strap and was pulled by the board in the opposite way and as I felt the pull as much as I could, I started to turn my body towards the direction the board was pulling ... Luckily my ankle was strong enough to take it, I would say I was lucky. Same thing: harmless fall. What I do in the offseason is build perception/strength in my ankles by doing balancing exercises and lifts on wobble board. It helps you to balance on the board when riding without foot straps (surf board in my case) and in situations like this one, your trained the tendons, muscles, ligaments might provide enough resistance to the force before you can disengage from the impact. Wish you all the best and speedy recovery, you are almost there ... Keep doing physio and don't rush back into kiteboarding.
Hi Laurie, How unfortunate that you broke your ankle while kiting, I already missed your videos. As for your fear of straps, think of it as being thrown off a horse, get back on as soon as possible and keep going. Yet almost nothing as beautiful as big air with your twintip, but ... foiling is actually fun too 😉 Wishing you a speedy recovery and hopefully see you soon. Grtz Jan
Wish you a speedy recovery, I am sure you will be kiting soon! take it from me - 42+ fractures (about when I was your age), 59 and kiting - hopefully for a long time to come ;-)
Thank you for posting this. I would like to see all injuries explained and posted on a public forum so we can watch out for these situations. I would not have guessed that a person could break an ankle with such a common occurrence. We have all missed your highly positive videos and I am confident most of us think you are very good to look at!
Thanks :) it’s been a surprise to see how common kiteboarding injuries are just based on the comments here alone. I agree it would be helpful to have a public forum on the topic
I can empathize. I had only just learned how to kite the previous year, and I was out for my first session of the year. I had been using a seat harness, and was trying a waist harness for the first time. To make things worse, it proved to be windier than I'd expected. I decided to return to my car to get a smaller kite. On the way in, my board hit bottom in shallow water. It came off one foot, and the board twisted my other ankle. This resulted in a fracture similar to yours, but affecting just one bone. The good news is, I managed to recover after surgery, and returned to kiting the next season.
Hope you a fast recovery. Let your body recover in its own pace, don't put pressure on it and when that day come we will have your fantastic's kite videos back.
Wish you a fast recovery! I have gone though the exact same fracture for the exact same reason, and same surgery 4yrs ago, took me 8month to recover due to some complications, living alone, still 6 screws and a plate in my ankle, doing straps again and so much more. you will be back to your very same normal again! 🌟🌟🌟
Ah I'm sorry to hear you went through the same thing! But thank you for sharing your experience - it helps a lot to hear you're still kiting and back to normal :)
Ouch ouch ouch ouch I cannot phrase how hard this video was for me to watch. I'm just very sensitive to injuries in general. I hope you the best recovery possible
You got this Laurie! This is just an opportunity to reflect on how precious our time on the water is and dream up more great content. Keep your chin up. I know I’ll see you back on the water soon!
Wishing you speedy recovery.. What I learned in my many broken bones trip is that you cant rush the healing process and you just have to put focus into other things, at what at first seems like a lot it gets easyer as soon as you accept it.. Also it is alot better to heave a clean bone break that a complicated sprain... beause when you fully heal you are good while the sprain keeps nagging you years after..
Hope you get well soon. Sending lots of love. Hope you can stay as positive as possible. We will patiently wait for the amazing content you guys are known for. 💪
Ouch!So Sorry to hear that. Speedy recovery! Keep positive👍 I know exactly how you feel I did the same I’m 7 months off the water dislocated my knee tore my PCL and MCL don’t think I will go back too strapped riding any time soon. I’m Looking forward to getting back on the water in May. Love your videos hope to see you back on the water soon 🤙
Ouch, I'm so sorry to hear about your injury too! But sounds like you'll be back on the water very soon :) Thank you for the well wishes and all the best through the rest of your recovery!
get well soon and hopefully you can keep going kitesurfing🤙 btw I am using very soft foot straps from Levitaz on my foilboard. Looking forward to see new content😃 always interesting and I like your positive mood 🫶
All the best in the recovery, great that you got it operated so quickly!! I had a very similar instant with a twintip in Jan '22 and fractured my ankle. It was a long 8/9 months recovery with a lot of physio but I was back on the water for Autumn winds. The first couple kite sessions I was very careful but my now ankle is better than ever. I really recommend taking it slow and focusing a lot on Physio. Especially dynamic practices like jumping and landing on one foot. Get well :)
Sorry to hear about your accident. Thanks for posting and letting us know what happened. I really like your videos and hope you stick with it after your recovery.
I wish you a quick recovery! Had a rupture of cruciate ligament on my left knee due to getting caught in straps during a failed backroll by the end of 2020.. the feeling of being back in the water after surgery and physiotherapy was the best.. keep that in mind and stay positive! I hope to see videos of you guys soon! Best wishes from Germany, Juan
Really wish you a full and fast recovery. It might take longer than you’d like, but you will be riding again. It will be one painful day at a time, some better and some days will be worse, just keep doing what doctors and PT say.
Thank you so much :) It's hard to be patient, but I also don't want to rush back on the water only to experience a set-back. Will continue to listen to the doctor & PT.
Hey so sorry to hear that! This is almost an exact replica of what happened to me - went on holiday, rode a different board and setup, crashed and one foot came out and other was almost ripped off my leg, moon-boot for rest of holiday and surgery when i got home. Good luck wtih the rehab, I got back on the water a few months later and now ride race gear again in straps and have zero problems! good luck :)
I broke my humerus in three in a kitesurfing accident in the summer of 2021 and needed a plate to reduce the fracture. Post op pain was hell. It took me a full 12 months to recover the range of motion (the shoulder is a difficult joint to recover as it has the highest range of motions of our joints) and to be frank, though I went back to kitesurfing I never really trusted it anymore. Now I just need perfect conditions with no gusts to venture out. Wishing you a good recovery!
Thanks :) I’m sorry to hear about your break - that sounds rough! Yes, post op pain is horrible - I had no idea/was not prepared. I can only begin to imagine what it will be like kiting again. Part of me is excited, but I’m also nervous.
Oh Laurie, I am sooo Sorry. Heartbreaking to watch. I met you and your crew last summer at The Wash (Sandy Bay Day Use Area) near Hatteras Village) asking you how it felt to be a Celeb LOL. Sorry anyway, I feel your pain. My kiting injury resulted in a small Osteochondral lesion on my Talus. I cringe whenever I see or hear of an ankle injury. We need our landing gear for sure. You WIll get better, I just have to deal with mine and hope it doesn't get worse..."it is what it is", ..Be Patient with your recovery....You have the rest of your life to KITE but only this period to HEAL properly, Get Well Soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey John, haha yes - it was great meeting you in Hatteras :) Appreciate the kind words, and sorry to hear about your injury too. I’m doing my best to be patient with recovery… I was kind of lucky that this happened in the middle of winter so I don’t feel like I’m missing out on any nice riding conditions, so that helps lol
I broke my ankle on 3 places 2 weeks ago. Almost exactly the same way you crashed. Luckily I didn't need surgery, but the doctors aren't very positive about my foot and being able to kite again. Seeing you walk after 9 weeks gives me a lot of hopes!!! Thank you for sharing your story and I hope you'll be able to kite very soon, stay strong!
I’m so sorry to hear that 😞 It’s a tough injury both physically and mentally, but you’ve got to keep positive and have hope it will get better. Wishing you all the best for your recovery!
I'm very sorry to hear this, and I wish you to recover as soon as possible! I always keep the straps very wide hoping it's enough... of course the best thing is always to go strapless! 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻🤞🏻👋🏻
So sorry to hear about your injury. I am sure you will find your way back to the water. 🙂🤙 We are all sending positive vibes, heal quickly. 🦿 Come back stronger💪
Wow, that's tough. Sobering to see a small thing causing that much impact. I broke my fibula wing skateboarding 1 1/2 years ago. Wanted to work on my tacking technique for wing foiling. A plate and 7 screws later realized not a good choice. I was back on the water within 2 1/2 months. I wing foil strapless partly for this reason. I had the hardware out this April. Much better flexibility now. Just learned to getup on twintip a couple weeks ago after winter kiting for a couple years. Based on your story I will move to surfboard and foil as soon as I can. Still need to improve kite control but will not be jumping especially at 66, LOL. Hope you continue on recovery. ;o)
Sorry to hear about your fibula fracture, but glad that you got back on the water and improved your flexibility with the hardware removal. And congrats on getting up on the twintip too :) Recovery has been going well for me. I’ve been kiting since April, and planning to have the hardware removed sometime next year.
a very common injury to twin tips kiteboarders. When they fall into the water, one foot got stuck on the foot strap and the other got loose on the board. I knew another kiteboarder twisted his ankle exactly like that. He did not get bone fractures but got ankle swelling and had to rest for weeks.
Dang it! Literally a couple days ago I had several crashed like yours and was just fine. It's good to be reminded how quickly your vitality can be taken away.
Wishing the best for you! Footstraps, especially with foilboard is a major concern for me. Hope you will post more videos again, they have been a source of inspiration, education and joy! Greetings from Norway.
Amazing that such an insignificant crash can do this much damage. Hope you are 100% soon, and looking forward to seeing more from you guys. You have such a great group of friends to kite with..
Yup - just bad positioning/luck I guess! Thanks for the well wishes. I'm feeling much better each week, and planning to kite again soon. Regardless of that we'll be making and posting more videos soon :)
Sorry about your injury. I am recovering from a surgery to repair a torn ligament on my wrist. It is pretty frustrating to be on the bench for months because of some freak accident, but I feel lucky that I'm expected to fully recover without any chronic injuries that'll bother me for the rest of my life. I hope that's the case for you too. As for footstraps, some of them tend to be a lot stickier than others. I had a couple similar experiences with Naish Apex straps, where it would not come out and bend my ankle pretty sketchily during falls. I have ditched those and am now using Duotone Entity, which are made of a nice and smooth material that is not sticky at all.
Sorry to hear about your injury as well! Definitely relate to the frustration of being on the sidelines. That’s good you can expect a full recovery - it’s just a matter of time :) I am hopeful that I will get back to 100% or pretty close to it 🤞 Good to know about the bindings - if I go back to straps someday it will be something to consider
Sorry to hear about your injury Laurie. Yes, it's shocking how easy it is to do major damage like that ... and a bit unnerving. I'm 3 weeks in from bi-lateral hip replacement surgery, so I "feel your pain" - agonizing for a few days. Able to walk unassisted now, so although hip surgery sounds more major than a few small bones in the ankle, the hips are less fiddly and the surgery mechanics very well established. Hope you're back on the water soon ... but not too soon!
Thanks for the well wishes and I hope your recovery continues to go smoothly and without any complications :) we are in Hatteras now and I’ve managed a few short sessions comfortably. Definitely easing myself in carefully, but it feels good to be back on the water
@@OurKiteLife I was able to kite foil for the last couple of years even though my hips were in terrible shape - no cartilage, just bone on bone. This was possible with foiling because - as you know - it's all about balance rather than strength. I will be cautious getting back on the water, however, as I really don't want to risk dislocating my new titanium joints!
Thank you, I hope so too. Sorry to hear about your ankles. One is hard enough - I can only imagine both injured. I've had the same thought about snowboarding bindings but will wait until next winter to make a decision
Sorry to hear about your accident. On a side note I was working out at my local gym and seen a video of you on TV. It was a beautiful location where ever it was. You have come a long way.
I'm really sorry. Speedy recovery to you! I had a similar fracture of 3 bones and now I ride the same way as before. The doctor said not to jump until the pins are pulled out.
As I was watching you bail from one of your foil jumps (so awesome!) I was thinking that you were doing a picture-perfect bailout, so even though I knew what was coming from the video title it still seemed unfair. You obviously know how to wipe out safely, and yet... bad luck happens. Good luck with your recovery
Yikes! One of my last kiteboard crashes banged my foot in an unknown fashion. However, it wasn't as bad as the week before when I was walking out of a garage and stepped into a small hole; whacking my foot on the edge of it. Walking on land is dangerous! Stick to the water! Glad to hear you're recovering and will be able to get on a motorcycle soon 🤪
Wishing you all the best with your recovery. Hope to see you on the water sooner than later. Stay positive!
Thanks Mike :) hope to see you on the water this summer!
Was on the fence about foot straps for wing surfing now seeing the potential risks with doing so...thks for info
Dear Laurie very very sorry to hear about your injury 😢! I wish you a fast recovery and be able to kitesurf as soon as possible! But don’t harry first you need to be strong!

Good luck with your continued recovery! Sorry to hear about your accident. Thanks for all the great Ontario themed kite videos.
Thanks :)
Hi Laurie,
How unfortunate that you broke your ankle while kiting, I already missed your videos. As for your fear of straps, think of it as being thrown off a horse, get back on as soon as possible and keep going. Yet almost nothing as beautiful as big air with your twintip, but ... foiling is actually fun too 😉
Wishing you a speedy recovery and hopefully see you soon. Grtz Jan
Thank you! It's hard to imagine right now risking the same injury/pain by going back to straps ...but I also know to never say never ;)
Glad to see you recovered and made the OBX trip!
Wish you a speedy recovery, I am sure you will be kiting soon! take it from me - 42+ fractures (about when I was your age), 59 and kiting - hopefully for a long time to come ;-)
Thanks Ray :)
Thank you for posting this. I would like to see all injuries explained and posted on a public forum so we can watch out for these situations. I would not have guessed that a person could break an ankle with such a common occurrence.

So sorry to hear, I thought it was quite some time from your last post, best of luck in the continued recovery, may you be kiting soon.
Thank you
Super unfortunate... thanks for the update and wishing you a good recovery
Much appreciated!
I can empathize. I had only just learned how to kite the previous year, and I was out for my first session of the year. I had been using a seat harness, and was trying a waist harness for the first time. To make things worse, it proved to be windier than I'd expected. 😢! Sorry to hear that and looking forward seeing you this summer 🥰
Thanks Erik! Looking forward to seeing you this summer too :)
Get well soon! As a person who also broke their first bone at the age of 34 during launch at the beach last year, I can fully relate.
Thank you, and sorry to hear about your broken bone too! Hopefully your recovery went well.
All the best, take care of yourself. I hope you’ll be back on your feet doing what you love soon.
Thank you 😊
Oh no, I'm so sorry. I'm rooting for your speedy recovery

Thank you! Sorry to hear about your injury. The idea of the first session back is definitely a motivating one :) cheers
Hope you have speedy recovery. Love watching your videos and they always inspire me to push myself to improve my kite skills.
Thanks so much 🙂

Thank you :) and yes, he definitely earned some major bonus points!
speedy recovery & hope you will post videos of you kiting in couple months!!! stay strong!
Thank you :)

Thanks! That’s the plan :)
I'm very sorry to hear this, and I wish you to recover as soon as possible! I always keep the straps very wide hoping it's enough... of course the best thing is always to go strapless!
💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻🤞🏻👋🏻
Thank you :)
How sad...wishing you a speedy recovery!
Thank you :)
Thanks for sharing your experience with this injury. Good to hear you are recovering well.
So sorry to hear about your injury.

Come back stronger💪
Thank you so much 😊
Sorry to hear, but you'll be back to your 100% in no time! Good luck with the rehab!
Thank you!
Yeah ankle injuries are unfortunately common for kiters for that reason. Hopefully the other kiteboarder you know is healed and doing better now
Dang it! Literally a couple days ago I had several crashed like yours and was just fine. It's good to be reminded how quickly your vitality can be taken away.
Ya it’s crazy how one moment can impact your life and mobility for months!
Wishing the best for you! Footstraps, especially with foilboard is a major concern for me. Hope you will post more videos again, they have been a source of inspiration, education and joy! Greetings from Norway.
Thank you :) we're planning on posting more regularly!
That sucks. Thank you for the update - was wondering why you had gone dark. Sending you some love.
Thank you :)
Wishing you a good recovery ❤
Очень жаль!😢, Поправляйся! Здоровья и терпения! Всё будет ОК!❤
Thank you so much :)
That’s good you can expect a full recovery - it’s just a matter of time :) I am hopeful that I will get back to 100% or pretty close to it 🤞
Good to know about the bindings - if I go back to straps someday it will be something to consider
Wishing you a speedy recovery and more kitesurfing videos in the future!
Thanks :)
Sending you healing energy.
Wow! very important video although sad. thank you so so much for the info! get well soon!!
Thanks so much 🙂
Sorry to hear about your injury Laurie.
Noooooo. I feel your pain. I am having hernia surgery in a few weeks. Can't understand how much it has slowed me down. Stay positive
Thanks :) I hope your surgery and recovery go smoothly! All the best
Желаем скорейшего выздоровления! Приезжайте к нам в Казань на зимний кэмп, попробуете совсем другой кайтинг) Shit happens ((
Thank you :) would love to visit in the future!
Hope you fully recover. I had two smashed ankles, don't feel comfortable riding straps anymore either. Even snowboarding without bindings nowadays.
Thank you, I hope so too. Sorry to hear about your ankles. One is hard enough - I can only imagine both injured. I've had the same thought about snowboarding bindings but will wait until next winter to make a decision
Fast recovery and lots of love ❤
Thank you 😊
Wishing you a speedy recovery!
Thank you!
Sorry to hear about your accident. On a side note I was working out at my local gym and seen a video of you on TV. It was a beautiful location where ever it was. You have come a long way.
Thank you :)
I'm really sorry. Speedy recovery to you! I had a similar fracture of 3 bones and now I ride the same way as before. The doctor said not to jump until the pins are pulled out.
Thank you. It’s reassuring to hear that you are back to kiting like you were before the injury :)
Hope you’re on the mend, always enjoyed your content from tropical Canada
Doing much better now, thanks :)
Ya, definitely just some bad luck - oh well! Thank you for the well wishes :)
Yep - it’s crazy how easily we can seriously injure ourselves on or off the water 😋 recovery is going well with lots of kiting this summer!
ouch... good recovery !
That's exacty the reason I went strapless more than 10y ago after being caught a few times in the straps. Never looked back.
Ya I can’t picture going back to straps now - I don’t want to risk ever going through this again!
I wish you to recover soon, stay strong!! 💪
Thank you 😊
Best of luck and hope you're back on the water soon.
Thanks :)
Whishing all the best and full and good recovery from Germany.
Thank you very much!
Oh no!!!!!! Such an unfortunate crash! Get better soon!
Thanks :)
Best wishes for a full & functional recovery ❤️🩹
Heel fast. Sucks to be off the water injured but you'll be back soon. Please keep posting :)
Thanks :) we plan to keep posting
So sorry to hear about the fracture. Get well soon.
Thank you :)
