Lets Talk About Dark Light | Metroidvania With A Few Too Many Ideas

- Dark Light is a pretty average Metroidvania, with a solid art direction but lack of a clear gameplay vision.
I'd say its worth the $14 price tag, as It was a functional complete game, and I did enjoy my time playing it. So theres worse ways to spend $14 thats for sure.
Dark Light itself has a solid foundation in its art style and overall concept, but I feel there were too many half-baked ideas that seem very out of place here. Like they tried a little bit of everything, just to see what would stick.
I'm not annoyed or mad at anything Dark Light did, it just always left me wishing it was done differently.

Dark light has a robust ng+ system that carries over everything and the game changes with each playthrough with more enemies, elites, plus your only locked into one of the skill trees with your first playthrough, you can choose the other skill tree on your second playthrough without losing your other skills, plus the game is very short so the entire game is now built around this ng+ system, these soulsvania style games are really starting to grow on me, with other great games like grime, salt and sacrifice, deaths gambit afterlife, afterimage and watcher chronicles, blending mechanics from both metroidvanias and soulslikes was a terrific idea, they go so well together when done right, ive always been geared more towards the more combat heavy and RPG style metroidvanias anyways which is why i always preferred castlevania over metroid, plus ive never owned my own nintendo system so metroid was just never a part of my life
Just finished the game...i guess? Lol. Game seemed to be going really good. Although my character became very op quite early on in game. I completed all the first faction quests then decided to go with the knights faction. Was on 3rd quest when next thing i know I'm being led to the final boss...seemed very odd to me because it was so abrupt lol. Ended up being the only difficult boss in the game to me. Just seemed odd to end so suddenly. Game style and combat was really enjoyable though.
For the sound effect from PoE, generally games just pull their SFX from gigantic libraries and there's occasional overlap. If you ever play early 2000s PC games like Deus Ex or Morrowind you'll hear a *ton* of stock sounds you've heard a trillion times in other games.
Seeing this REALLY makes me want to recommend Blasphemous to you, Phemeto. It lacks build variety, but it has an excellent map in spite of limited movement and much better rewards for explaining, and combat is simple and clean.

Yeah! Blasphemous is awesome. I'd also recommend Momodora or La-Mulana.

@@m.bennett9656 Momodora was too short. It has a kinda spiritual sequel whose name eludes me at the moment where you play as a sexy nun lady and it’s… ok. Momodora was better. Just shoulda been longer

I kinda wish there were a bit more games like Flashback. Anyone remember Flashback? Anyone got any games kinda like that? Metroidvania style games that are more puzzle solving rpg games…. I have Axiom Verge 2 and I hear it’s really good and different from the first (ie not just Metroid) and it kinda has that puzzle feeling but it didn’t really grab me at all… I dunno, maybe I should give it another go 🤷♂️

Hmmmm Seems very limited, but all interesting at the same time. Considering the many top tier "Metroidvainia" games out there, I'll save my money and go towards GRIME next. Thanks for covering!
Grime is obviously Indy and it feels really Indy in little spots here and there. Nothing crazy that totally shakes up the experience in a negative way, but you can tell they put a LOT of love into it. I recommend it fo sho!

lol Did you work on this game? And did you break your Caps key? Also understand that nobody is obligated to purchase anything. Reviews can be skewed one way or the other by money clout and industry politics, but they're important so people don't end up spending money on something they end up regretting. That's on the game maker to create something worth buying.
