I'm glad you made a point to show the planting depth on the Paphs. I think so many people pot them too high when they repot and this is why the plants waste away.

Yes, it does appear I've potted them quite low, but they've all worked out well except for poor little sukhakulii!

@@OrchieDee yeah, that plant was in a sad way already though. Have you seen Ed's videos with the live moss on his Paphs? I'm wondering if I shouldn't order some to see if I get the same result.

Being a grower of Paphs for 20 years in Queensland Australia.. Here.
    Well done video and presentation.
    Some pointers though.
Way too overpotting going on there.
Avoid Spag in the mix the roots need to breathe and it stays to wet.
I like the air holes in your pots bit I hot u don't keep them in the decorative pots all the time?
Yes plant starter Auxinone is brilliant as a foliar and watering root stimulant... Any orchid especially paphs I recommend u soak in a mix of the root stimulant over night before repotting ie 1 quarter root stimulant rest water.
Flush your mix regularly and make sure to feed. Keep humidity up... They hate air-con by the way and do much better outside... Ie air current. Natural.
And your dead right on the depth of planting...
You will be an expert in no time... Well done 👌

I love your channel it’s great having someone in Australia doing videos as our conditions are so different.
I have spend years growing Paphs and I purchased them mainly at shows from Nicky’s slippers he is a grower in SA. All his orchids I have purchased have extensive root systems so I was off to a great start. I did buy a few off eBay and the root systems only had two maybe four roots at best.
I wondered how Nicky did it , on his website he says the biggest mistake people make is potting them in too large containers and putting them in too bright light.
I got my ebay orchids and put them in tiny pots even if their leaves were disproportionately big for the root systems. They have all taken off and now I have gone larger pots as they are growing out everywhere. The roots systems are extensive . I figure take the advise of people who are successful and Nicky is the master in Australia like the Ed of the UK except he doesn’t have a UA-cam channel!
I recommend ordering off him and you will be amazed at his large roots systems. I think size does matter when it comes to roots for flowering and now I have multiple paphs flowering twice a year.
So if you keep loosing your plants maybe try my suggestion.
Keep the great videos coming, I am a big fan ❤️

Rachel Killcare thanks Rachel yes I’ve noticed Nicky’s slippers online and it’s true I have some paphs with very decent root systems :). Most of my mottled paphs are just little bubs though and I don’t want to misrepresent myself - for the most part I’ve only been growing paphs for a couple years, and am still learning myself. I get a lot of my plants from Atian in north qld. Nice plants, his are often in bigger pots. My struggle here with small pots is the time in which they dry out, my lifestyle and environment just do not permit me to water these guys more than twice a week - usually it’s less, every 5-7 days, which is a real problem in summer. So I have to figure out ways that work for me. And slightly bigger pots allow me to keep them in my qld summers. It’s a balance, of course if I could have perfect conditions for all my plants I would, but I have too many, and don’t have automated systems in a greenhouse. Though I will take your advice and maybe later this year look at a little haul from him! For now, I actually haven’t bought any new orchids since around August :)

Yes the ebay seller slipperorchidoz, I have brought about six seedlings from him and one flowering sized plant , all there root systems were just ok no new growing tips on any of the roots, it has taken me over a year to get the “flowering sized” primulinum to now be in bud.
The most I water is twice a week for the little pots I put fine 3-6 mm orchiata bark, perlite and charcoal with a layer of sphagnum moss on the top only, I water them in their own pots as the moss slightly starts to dry , which for most are once a week . But your right Queensland is hotter then NSW so it may not work for you, mind you our summers are also distinctly stinking hot!
I think paphs are bit of princess orchids, high maintenance compared to phrags or phals which are more forgiving. Paphs need the watering pretty much exactly moist, not too wet definitely not too dry or they sulk and die, I learnt this on two of those seedlings from slipperorchidoz. The other four have survived to adulthood!
Nicky has done the international orchid show annually in Queensland he was there in 2019, so you may get to see his orchids this year at your show.! Or maybe even he would do an interview for your channel, that would be amazing! I would love to see that😍 He comes to my annual show at Mingara and brings over a hundred flowering paphs as well as phrags. He does great crosses, I am looking forward to the seedling I purchased last year delinatii x lola bird, blooming.
Thanks for your reply and all your great information , have a great day❤️

An excellent well timed video Deanna, as I have recently purchased my first two mottled leaf Paphs. The info you have given answers all my questions, so I feel much happier about the repotting when it needs to be done. Thank you 🌞

This was a very good video on repotting paphs. I have problems growing paphs. Afraid to repot the few I have as the only one I repotted died. I think I will try to follow your instructions and repot the remaining paphs. Thank you for sharing your knowledge on this subject.

sej haha I like you say I make it look easy. The reason there’s so many is in always put it off for so long!! It’s an ‘easy’ but time consuming process I think. Don’t be fooled by UA-cam! You’ll notice the summary scene is the next morning - that’s because I finished at like 9pm that night having to stop and clean the kitchen in between to make dinner 😂

@@OrchieDee 14 repots is a lot! I know you can stop and start the camera but it's still a lot of work to actually do it. No Deanna, not so easy for me yet. I'm still nervous when I unpot a plant and when I plant it back up - I'm afraid I'll do something wrong. You've got a cool touch! 😊

My local orchid club has mentioned several times a product called Plant Starter made by Multicrop. Cost about $15.
Ive bought some but not used it yet. Other club members have said they have had really good results, excellent root growth.

Good quality medium makes such a difference in the success of root growth. I've learned my lesson with questionable sphagnum stunting root growth.

Im a newbie with orchids and just ordered sphagnum moss on AliExpress before reading this... I cancelled. I will be buying again the high quality long fiber one I used to use for my carnivorous plants, is expensive in comparison but I won't take the risk. Thanks for the advice.

I just repotted some new phals I just got and gave them some cal/mag w/ epsom salt. Can I soak them in seaweed as well? And do you tds and ph the seaweed as well?
    Thank you ☺️🌱

    • @OrchieDee
      @OrchieDee  4 роки тому

Mya Taylor yes, just do the seaweed next watering :). You don’t necessarily need to soak, be cautious if it’s winter where you are to keep them nice and warm after repotting. I don’t measure tds anymore but it’s around 30 for my seaweed solutions. You don’t need to measure pH, as far as I’m aware seaweed isn’t pH dependent for absorption (though the very small amount of potassium in it is). :)

What are the reasons to repot ? How often repot can be done ? Should we change to same media system or can shift from onevto other
    2. Can i grow phaos in rice skin ?
3.,Which kind of media they like most?
You may skip any or all Q

    • @OrchieDee
      @OrchieDee  4 роки тому +1

Hamim CHOWDHURY since you have a lovely pic of a papa s your thumbnail I’m assuming you already know a thing or two about them ;)
As I mentioned, I do think I’ll be repotting at least actually, unless I think they are declining earlier. Check out my ‘choosing which orchids to repot’ videos for my selection process. Dramatic changes in media are always a little risky, especially if they are doing well in your current medium. Sorry I Dont know what rice skin is but I do seeing experiments in yt if you want to document it!!
