My biggest pet peeve is when no matter what watch you wear, non watch enthusiasts will ask if it’s a Rolex, and you have to tell them it’s not, people think if it’s not Rolex, it sucks, even if I were to wear an Omega, people wouldn’t care at all since it’s not a Rolex

Yes! How do you expect someone to work their way up to luxury watchers? Most collectors (myself included) collected sub $1000 or even sub $500 watches for a long time before taking the leap on a true luxury watch. It all starts as a curiosity and develops into a passion and appreciation for fine craftsmanship.

Exactly, unless it's a cheap "fashion watch" that are more for esthetic rather than actually serving a watches purpose. I see no reason to judge. If they love It then let them, whether it's a $20 casio or $300 seiko.

When your watch doesn't stay where you want it to stay on your wrist. Tighten the strap to make it stay in place and it's too tight, loosen the strap for comfort and gravity takes it where it doesn't belong.

My mother knows that I collect watches, so for my birthday she gifted me an Invicta. Her eyes lit up when she saw Invicta supposedly had it priced at "$900". I didn't have the heart to explain to her how they priced their watches truly. However I still wear it from time to time because it at least isnt one of their gaudy pieces. Plus, it was my first skeleton watch after all, and it looked ok on a leather strap.

In the military a lot of people wear the watch face down so the glare from the crystal won't give away their position, you won't beat the face against a tree or whatnot when bracing a weapon and you can see the dial without taking your hand off of your weapon.

    • @user-et8vm9cc3t
      @user-et8vm9cc3t 6 років тому +1

Isn't there a bigger wrist to scratch the crystal by wearing it like this ? I mean, ok, it's fine as long as the soldier is walking or running or whatever, but what when he lies down and has to crawl under enemy fire ?

JonFFavale Yes, but he can run, jump, fight and lie down while wearing his watch normaly. "The glare of the crystal" - there's a solution for it: a fabric cover attached to the strap. You can get these for less than 10 quid. No need to put your watch in an awkward position, scratch it or get spotted by the enemy.

Not every mechanical movement is accurate enough for that to be reliable. Certified chronometer. For anything else, it's just there for you to time 1 minute, and it's close enough for that.
3: XXL guys need an XXL watch. some people go overboard, but some people like one big enough to look proportioned like their other clothing and accessories.

I like them to be non hacking, kind of remembers you of the fact that time has an urge of its own and how you ultimately must bow to it as a slave to the watch. The watch cuffs his wearer in time and doesn’t let him get control over it. Of course you can curse it, or drool over it, time doesn’t care one second of it.

That is why replicas are such a wonderful thing. They undermine snobbery. Produce more. Buy more. Spread them worldwide so that no one will ever buy a "luxury" watch for its snob appeal. Because lets be honest, if you're not buying for that reason, it won't bother you if someone else assumes it wasn't really made by Patek/AP/Rolex.

Helium valve is ment for decrompression period in a bell, for saturation divers. You can dive with a Rolex Sub and just open the crown when you decompress. Helium valve is just a gimmic. The deepsea has a check valve helium valve , thats is a nice thing then you dont have to remember to open any crown. On the Seamaster you can just also open the regular crown for time and date. The main thing is to let the helium out of the watch when you decrompress..

Michael Barry The Grand Seikos mostly aren't quartz watches but spring drives. The F.P. Journe Élégante 48 however surely is a quartz watch that deserves its display case back.

    • @michaelbarry9848
      @michaelbarry9848 7 років тому +3

JerehmiaBoaz You're right right that much of the Grand Seiko range is spring drive, but they actually have three seperate movement types:
      1) Pure mechanical (both regular and hi-beat)
      2) Spring Drive
      3) High Accuracy Quartz
The limited edition HAQ models do feature exhibition case backs, whereas the regular production models do not. Their mechanicals and spring drive models mostly do.

A lot of hate for quartz I see,
Don't fret good sirs and let it be.
Quartz is accurate and it is precise,
It oscillates 32,768 times a second, THAT is nice.
Divide it by 2 until you get one,
That counts as a second; Now isn't that fun?
Don't fret good sirs, Quartz is ingenious I say,
Let me explain further, if I may.
The tiny crystal de la Quartz is akin to the balance wheel, yes indeed,
For it vibrates similarly, back and forth, inside it's chamber..that's agreed.
It has it's it's place in horology gentlemen
Enjoy it, cherish it and count to ten!

People who wear their watches on the underside of their wrist normally were veterans from the second world war. My grandfather being one of them. This was done in order to prevent light from reflecting off of the watch and thus giving away your position to the enemy. Taking the watch off wasn't an option because platoons would often set their watches simultaneously and need to see the time in order to coordinate attacks and tactical movements for operations that were time sensitive. After the war it became a trendy way for veterans to identify one another and it still carries on to this day.

Watches whose makers insist on writing an essay on the dial. Example: the _Rolex Daytona_ which is a lovely watch except that Rolex insist on plastering "Oyster Perpetual Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified Cosmograph" all over the dial. Lovely piece spoiled by all that text. Clean up the design by relegating all that twaddle to the back of the watch. All the front needs to say is "Rolex", "Daytona" and "Swiss Made"; that's it.
Many a watch could be improved this way.

Thank you for the video. This one comes a little late but as a lefty, I say it anyway: One of the best things about being an adult is that no-one dares to complain about me wearing the watch in the right (i. e. wrong/against the common standard) hand. When I was a little kid I, I heard it many times. I don't think people say to Mr Paul McCartney (with the same hand priority as me):"You should hold the bass the other way round". So, when you see something made or kept in the wrong way, it is probably for a reason. Let us all keep our minds open. Keep on taping!

I said that is a beautiful watch, what is it? he immediately took it off and handed it to me, asking what is it? it was light and the surfaces were like perfect silk. I saw the smurf and the rolex and said 'no wonder I love it'. He said it's a Daytona. I was wearing my Orient Bambino and didn't even point that out after all. To answer your question about the gas release valve on the Rolex, I was lucky to find someone that can answer this. I work as a nurse here in Central Florida and one of my patients used to be a diver for Walt Disney for 8 years. I noticed he was wearing a Rolex watch with the gas release valve. He said when he was at Disney he would go as low as 150 feet below with no need to release the valve. HIs friend who is also a diver has a Rolex fixes ships and welds oil rigs below the ocean at weeks time in Alaska. He too never had to use the release valve and he has been using his Rolex for almost 10 years and the watch is still functioning like the first he bought it. I am happy this question can be put to rest. My Disney Diver made $350/hr to put fix the aquarium. The guy that welds in Alaska makes $1000 a day for his work.

The disparaging comment about $4000 quartz watches is confusing to me: people will often look down on quartz under the premise that they are cheap and disposable. Then, a manufacturer goes to the effort of making one that matches the technical and aesthetic polish of a high quality mechanical watch...and that doesn't cut it, either! It seems as though quartz simply cannot win.

    • @faizalf119

They're reliable until the circuit gives out. Then they effectively can't be fixed. Or it would cost more to fix than replace. In that sense, they *are* disposable.
Why would any quartz watch cost 4k? The movement *is* the watch. Everything else is window dressing. I don't see why any quartz watch would cost more than a couple of hundred.

Michael Barry quartz movements are more accurate and they last longer as well.. by the time the battery gives out for most quartz pieces, it's time for a service on an automatic watch anyway.. but I think 4k for any watch unless you've got that kind of cash to swing around is ludicrous. All a watch does is tell time.

Recently I saw this on two guys at work and it bothered me profoundly (and they have kept on wearing them over a long period of days, so its not a matter of " it died sometime through the day').
If you can't afford to service a watch, sell it, or keep it in store until you can. A watch, in its essence, is a time-telling tool. What is the point of wearing one that doesn't fulfill its intended purpose?

It ran and supposedly kept time and everything, but no face, no hands, no means of telling the time or anything. Instead it had a glossy black 'dome' where the sapphire crystal would be.

I wore a broken Seiko for months because it was a gift from my mother to my father and it was his first watch. I ended up getting robbed, all my music equipment, my car and my father's watch.
Not only did it just feel normal to wear it after having it for so long, it had sentimental value to me. I still have a bad feeling about not fighting back that night because eventually I would have loved to have it repaired.
I have no idea what type it was, it was a gold (faux I'm sure) case/bracelet purchased in the early to mid nineties with a day/date window at 3 o clock and block hour markings. I guess if I researched I might find another one similar.
EDIT: After less than a half hour of looking I've found the Seiko SMY042 to be the watch I'm looking for. Maybe I'll try and pick one up soon.

the dial down one...... ahh thats a military and driver/pilot one. The purpose of having the dial inwards is two fold.
the first is because the crystal of a watch is usually reflective and in a military context, can give one's position away easily with a bright glare. It also allows for easier reading when using a rifle without having to take one's hand off a weapon. in some cases, it also protects the crystal when taking a tumble onto a hard floor/against a wall
the second being that having the dial inwards allows for easier reading when using a steering wheel/yoke of a car/plane respectively.

To clarify, I think the issue with mesh bracelets is that they can't be shortened and usually the moving retainer that holds what is left over (like a belt loop) doesn't keep it in place for long and will usually slide towards the clasp leaving the oversize section flopping about and catching on things - apart from in the rare cases when these are magnetic. Also the clasp itself can often mark them. If this weren't the case I'd go for a mesh bracelet 9 times out of 10. As for the whole watch snobbery thing; every watch enthusiast is going to have it to some extent as it comes with having an opinion at all. The question is whether you are overtly rude with that snobbery or you can keep it to yourself - it's called tact.

The genre of watches that gives the most accuate time is quartz.Anything else is for the love of mechanical things or snobbery not accuracy. We like what we like .Knock off the snobbery against quartz.

delgado Agree with you, i could have went for a mechanical watch but instead got a Citizen Eco drive diver because of the accuracy.

Yes, personally I much prefer mechanical movements (as I'm sure most of us here do), but quartz movements are objectively better. They _should be_ more accurate, and they should never require a service, just change the battery every ~5 years or so.
      Seiko's spring drive tho...

Agree about the text. Sometimes you find watches that would be beautifully stylish if they hadn't written a novel on the front of them. Less is more. Maker's name or logo (not both) and maybe the model. Anything else that doesn't directly serve the functionality of the watch and it's complications should be omitted.

I am an older watch enthusiast, and I no longer snorkel or dive. Therefore if I want my Divers to wear Leather, they wear Leather (usually winter months).
I happen to like a Cyclops on my Cristal. My older eyes need help. If a watch has a date window showing the numerical Day of the Month, then I add the Cyclops. It's my watch and I'll do what I like with my watches.
1000 feet = 304.8 meters, so close enough for Diving, IMO.
For me, if I can stick my pinky finger under the Bracelet, then it fits correctly for me. Leather Straps are different, since I can easily adjust the tightness of the Strap by adjusting the notch on my Strap.

My pet peeve is when I go to a jewelery store and the staff doesn't understand what an automatic watch is. More than once I've had sales people show off the exhibition case back but tell me the battery is dead. Then when i ask to handle it they are astonished when it starts working. Also people who brag about the money they spent on their watch, and then when I ask if it's an automatic or quartz movement they have no idea what I'm talking about. I'm mean damn, do 15 minutes of online research people. Just chaps my ass raw

The reason you would wear a watch facing inboard is purely utilitarian in a military context. When you're shooting a rifle you can see the watch face without taking your hand off the stock. The watch band gives your wrist area some protection when shooting from a barricade standing position and the flat of the back of your arm is more stable when it's not rolling around on a big bump of a watch. Additionally, that puts the tritium glow toward you instead of displaying it to an advesary at night. Desk jockeys wear them on the outboard position because it's easier for them to read when the palm is down as in writing or typing. Like most things it is mostly about practicality, not affectations.

Wearing watch on inside of the wrist is a remnant of military tradition. It reduces chances of reflection (toward enemy) and prevents damage in combat conditions. Of course, nowadays that's a bit redundant, because of non-reflecting coatings and technology which makes some pretty tough watches. But it's still a legit way to wear a watch when handling weapons in combat.
And in my opinion, it's a good way to wear a watch which you like, but it doesn't look good on your wrist. For example, I like to casually wear my little Casio F-91W and when I do some physical work, but on my large wrist it looks rather ridiculous, so I wear it inside of the wrist. In many cases, that also prevents scratches on its surface.
Therefore, many military guys wear watches on the inside wrist, as a matter of habit, but it's always about Casios and some digital pieces. I never saw someone wears some good looking watch or a diver watch like that. Also, I've noticed some women like to wear tiny bracelet watches like that, which imho is ok in cases when the bracelet looks better than a dial.

    @TomF1970 6 років тому +6

At 24:10 you talk about wearing your watch dial down (on the inside of the wrist) and don't know why. Well, most (real) military Soldiers wear their face to the inside to both protect the face from damage during maneuvers, conceal the glass from reflecting light, day or night and best of all, a slight turn of the wrist in a firing position and you can see the time without taking your hand off the weapon. Now, if the person in question is wearing a fancy dress watch like that... no comment. Most of the time you'll see guys with low end, easily discardable items that if trashed, they won't loose much sleep over it. Just my two cents after 29+ years in the service.

TomF1970 Great point about watch visibility while holding a rifle. I wonder if this could apply to hunters as well. I just remember it being a sort of fad in elementary school.

  • @JohnClarkW

TGV, wearing a watch with the face on the inside of the wrist is military thing. It keeps light from reflecting off the face, and keeps it from getting smashed, or making impact noise. I used to do this in uniform for years, and I wasn't comfortable wearing them in the traditional manner until I stopped wearing watches for several years.
It sure seems like most of the pet peeves are really just aesthetic preferences. QC issues are my real peeves like the hands not lining up correctly on the indices, misaligned bezels, and inaccurate watches. I can appreciate watches that I would never personally wear. I personally don't like cyclops eyes, and think a number of the Swiss brands are way overpriced, but I can still appreciate that Rolex makes a great watch.
