Learning from 'The Master': Balenciaga Deconstructed
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 тра 2017
- Known as 'The Master' of haute couture, Cristóbal Balenciaga produced some of the most influential designs in the history of modern fashion. We invited students from the London College of Fashion to investigate iconic garments by Balenciaga, deconstructing his processes and revealing secrets of their making and construction using digital pattern-cutting technology.
'Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion' is on display at the V&A from 27 May 2017 until 18 February 2018

This should be an entire series or at least a documentary. Invaluable to those interested in fashion, becoming designers or, even home sewers. Consider it.
Very useful project for the students.
Ah, I wish this was an hour long, not just 4 minutes...it’s such a rare opportunity for ‚normal people‘ to be able to look at and learn about what goes into the making of a haute couture garment.
Please make more of these videos with close up looks and detailed explanations 🙏
Totally in love with this world !
I was fortunate to see these creations last fall exhibited at the V&A. It was a fantastic experience and I spent most of the day there. The red gown and floral embroidered dresses were particularly memorable. Even his pattern drafting tools were on display and it’s a good reminder that these works of art were truly created by hand by masters of their art. Thank you for posting this video with even more insight.
Love this! What an extraordinary opportunity to analyze a great designers construction techniques
This is amazing to watch and interesting because I love Haute Couture. This is such an amazing team of people doing this craft.
I wish this was longer . Balenciaga is my favourite fashion brand and it’s history and story is really unique. Cristobal was hailed by other big designers for his work . And I’m also obsessed with Demna he is a blessing for balenciaga
Me too demnas work at balenci n vet is truly inspiring
Fantastic! Thank you for making a video for us. I would love seeing similar content in the future
PLEASE MORE IN DEPTH!
If this were 2 hours long it wouldn't be long enough..😍😍😍 Is there an extended version of this somewhere? Or more on other designers? This is gold. Thank you!🙏😊
So wonderful to watch. Thank you
Maravilloso, el trabajo de una vida llena de arte. Con los métodos más increíbles para crear piezas fantásticas.
I love this. Thank you for sharing
I could replicate these. love the challenge.
Amazing! Thank you
Any chance the modern pattern pieces will be made available to home sewers via a pattern manufacturer?
What model of pfaff sewing machine is that? 😍
Okay but if there's one thing I've picked up is that you should use paper measures, like those you get at Ikea, because they don't stretch like plastic ones do, they don't accumulate oils from your hands, and you can write directly on them, or even cut into them if you so wanted. The lady at the 1:50 mark was using one, but I was rather surprised to see that most of the other weren't using them.
While in design school, I had professors that would beat traditional technique in me verbally. Those techniques simply would not work for me and what I was trying to design. I understood the "foundation", however in trying to drape something off grain that made the design come to life was a NO-NO in their eyes. I later met another professor who said to me if you have to throw the grain off in order to achieve your design, then so be it. Fudy Duddy professors should know better
This is important. Many designers don't know the rules of tailoring before breaking them. Virgil Abloh is a great example.
Same goes with dressing and most other things to learn.
This sounds like "my art teacher won't let me draw anime!"
WOW! 😍💯🙌
Мечтаю попасть на такие курсы.
In the early 80's, one of my homes was destroyed by fire, a 60's House of Balenciaga gold and cream brocade floor length gown with matching coat was destroyed,,, I wonder if they may have pictures of it, as I do not anymore,, insurance is small comfort losing something like that...
How sad :( it's true, money doesn't replace our stuff
Man that stinks. I'm so sorry 💔 to hear that
it's a quiencianera dress. 🎀
This video is basically a "trailer" for what should really be a full length series? Show?
Oh yeah.. it's a school, meaning tons of money. Ouch 😬
Hmmm, craftsmanship of the designer or the sewists that actually made the garments?
The memes brought me here.
When will there be more diversity within the curatorial programs.
No one man??
Today's Balenciaga is a trashy fashion house that something hobos would wear. Thanks to Demna.
Adrian Alfiza rich hobos
it's two completely different eras. fashion is not anymore just about elegance and timelessness. Yes, there are designers such as Dries Van Noten doing this, but it's not the only thing designers focus on. We're now able to appreciate the beauty in ugliness and I find it amazing.
@@GrumpyStormtrooper very well said. 👏👏👏👏👏☝️🙏🤔
Balenciaga is now a brand that, as it did in the 60s, speaks to its time in the language that it needs and wants to be spoken to. You cannot expect 2020 to be the 50s, but that’s a conversation you’re not ready to have...

Beautiful!! The very pc student selection made me laugh though.
Lilac ism Why is it that when people of color are apart of something it is automatically assumed that it is PC?
