My god, the clip of the young girl crying defending her abusers is heartbreaking. Her brain literally cannot comprehend the abuse she suffered and starts to break down when confronted with the fact that what she went through wasn’t normal and was in fact wrong.
I saw that when it aired. It was a (20/20, 60 Minutes, Dateline.. ?) story about how their mother had escaped the cult, and how she was trying to regain custody of her children from their father (who was still a member). It also aired an interview with the father -who was the CREEPIEST guy ! Even my younger brother said "Man ! That guy just oozes EVIL !"
@@TheoRae8289 Aye, fair enough, then. Just thought it made sense considering the context of the video first, then the actual realities at hand afterward.

This, but also a more extreme belief sometimes featured in Christianity is the distain towards modern medicine, doctors, and hospitals. Still horrible and not great either way, those poor children :(
Not to mention that visiting a doctor would reveal the identities of the members and children. Members who are hiding from government authorities. Children who don't even have identities on record.
Tell me about it, really wanted to give her a hug. But as heartbreaking as it was it also gave me hope that these kids inherently knew what was happening to them was wrong and break the cycle of abuse. I'd be far more disturbed and disheartened if they defended it with conviction that it was acceptable.
Oh I know I thought the last one based on a kids show was top fucked up this one says hold my beer u ain't seen shit and omg did it ever just make me feel so bad for the women and kids who just could not get out of the cult
This cult is one of the most evil things I have ever seen. These people deserve to be punished to the full extent of the law for everything they've done.
Oh man. Cults are kind of a hyperfixation of mine, and I immediately thought "that puppet looks a bit like David Berg....uh oh." He was a truly evil man. Rest in peace, Ricky.
The fact that the cult still exists because they "say" they don't do that stuff anymore, and that the legal system accepts that promise is mind-blowing.
I would think it's difficult to prosecute cults because of the brainwashing, isolationism, and all. Just look at what all happened with the People's Temple cult.
Another reason I don't believe in freedom of religion. Some forms of religions are just borderline unjustifiable. I mean for example, would you allow an ancient religion that literally sacrifices children to be practiced?
The thing is, they don't believe what they do is abuse and their victims have been groomed into believing it's not abuse. Since they operate in countries that won't prosecute them, they can get away with it very easily. So yes, they can "disavow child abuse" but remember: what they're doing isn't considered abuse by its members so there's no conflict of words and actions. It's all very sick stuff.
THE FACT THAT RICKY WANTED TO SAVE HIS SISTER TECHI JUST BREAKS MY HEART AND THE FACT THAT SHE SAID THAT HE WAS JUST "disturbed" AND IS STILL WITH THE FAMILY IS JUST SO, IT JUST HURTS MAN
I do recommend watching Ricky's vlog. From what we know of him (not the cult's version), once he was out he really did make a real go of trying to not let what happened to him ruin him as a person and he was actually thriving for someone that had to unlearn a lot of garbage. The dude sounds exactly like the kind of guy you'd just want to hang out with, talk about horror movies, and listen to some great music. He did not deserve his ending, he deserved a much happier and much more peaceful one.
@@nonamej1591Our statue of limitation laws are so idiotic. Especially when it comes to child abuse. I can't blame Ricky at all for his choices or his failed plan, not even the actions he actually took that fateful night. How could anyone be expected to come out of that existence any healthier? In his eyes and through his trauma he saw that people were getting away with the abuses he'd suffered since infancy, and everyday he wasn't doing something more children were being subjected to the same kind of torturous existence. Him admitting that he only felt worse after he broke and killed his abuser was just so human, evidence that he had morality and empathy none of the cultists had as they broke him.

@@RainbowMilk1996Indeed, but the fact this showed robot tits uncensored for children to watch is wild to me! It's almost like our version of Tomorrow's Passion (I think that's what its name was) where a kids show showcased insanity in disguise.

Because it wasn’t a Christian comic, it was made by a pedophilic sex cult leader. Did you not understand anything from the video? Just because someone says it’s in the name of god doesn’t mean it’s actually following real Christian ideologies. This guy came up with his own ideas and ran with it.
an extremely interesting and inspiring side character in the Children of God story, is a guy named Ted Patrick. He saved many kids from David Berg and started work on "Deprogramming" them of the things they were taught. He would go on to save countless other people from Cults throughout his life. Fascinating guy
Not to be the person who says yeah, but... but... Yeah, but unfortunately, he wasn't always on the right side. For every few people he saved from abusive cults, there were a few people he made questionable 'rescues' of. I remember one story about a cult member he saved from a cult on behalf of another cult, which I thought had to be a joke, but was the Elma Miller case, where he was hired by one obscure Amish group to kidnap a woman from her new obscure Amish group. If he'd just stuck to rescuing people from groups that were breaking laws, groups like The Family, etc., his story would be great, but sometimes he worked to rescue people from "cults" whose only problem was being seen as insufficiently Christian by a person's parents. It is absolutely maddening, because nearly all cult deprogramming resources are currently run by groups most of us would consider cults and the newer cult fashion in the US seems to be cults that base their belief on enemy cults that don't exist, but whose existence is used to justify terrible things. (Like that guy who wanted to shoot up the pizza parlor because of kids in the non-existent basement.) It's icky to even think about because it's great that he saved people from awful people but also he probably brought people to awful people.

It was really fucked up of them to do that interview in the first place. Those children needed help and therapy, not to be interviewed and antagonized by a reporter.
Yeah that was super messed up. I don’t necessarily agree with the concept of “childhood innocence” and don’t think we need to shield children from everything just slightly explicit, but that was WAAAY too far holy crap
@@KyleEvra-15That doesn't make sense, if people stopped having children we would become extinct, and as horrible as these crimes are, the reality is that most children in the world live ordinary lives.
I want to add that the girl is probably so distressed for two reasons: the first being that her ENTIRE WORLD is being questioned. The second is that she's probably been told that people saying the abuse was wrong are saying she did something wrong. She's probably internalized the inherent wrongness and now faces two options: she's done things that the whole world says is evil and horrible, or everything grandpa said was right.
Her entire worldview was "never question" so I'm not surprised she was so distressed. It like being told that the sky is actually orange and it being blue would be very bad. it's just an unquestioned fact of her life.

The concept of "Love" has been so profoundly interwoven with the horrible acts she was made to see as natural. So many abusers to this day use this tactic. And the victims can hardly trust the convept of love ever again. It is truly disheartening.
The scariest part of all these videos is how these are only the ones that are public about it. Imagine how many worse groups there are all around the world and the horrible things going on behind closed doors. It literally makes me sick to my stomach to think about.
this upsets me so much. newborns, babies, toddlers, young children, pre teens, all subjected to horrible sexual abuse. as a woman, it hurts to know that some women lack the instinct to want to remove themselves and their children, boy or girl, from the disgusting situations they're in. the fact that this cult is still active to this day, run by david's widow, is beyond horrific. those poor children were and are being failed.
I feel like it's important to note that TFI is super anti-LGBT, and as such (including in the case of Ricky) the primary abusers of young boys were women, not men. Likewise, the whole Flirty fishing thing meant it was primarily women being used to indoctrinate outsiders, not men dragging their wives/girlfriends into it. They're Patriarchal, but that doesn't mean the women and mothers in it are pure victims. Just feel like it's a bit important to note given it goes against the usual narrative with extremist/fringe religions and cults.
Bit worth noting that the women would regularly abuse the children too, not just the men. In fact, because they were vehemently anti-LGBT the men were forbidden from "abusing" the boys in that way, so as in ricky's case it was women victimizing young boys rather than the stereotypical scenario.

wow, this is such an accurate depiction of what life was like growing up in this cult. You did some amazing research, more detailed than any other podcast or video I've heard/seen so far. The amount of time the lessons of the show is explicitly "obey" is disturbing in itself. It sounds like something the villain's in a saturday morning cartoon would come up with to control children.
It feels like a parody of Christian TV made to paint it as cult-like. Like Moral Oral or something. But instead it's just literally propaganda from a pseudo-Christian s** cult.
Hard to imagine a man who encouraged his followers to imagine themselves with Christ while self-pleasuring and having intercourse going anywhere BUT hell.
I literally cried after watching the video. It reminded me a lot of the situations of the family households where my friends and even my wife grew up in. I've never experienced anything like in the video but I've seen a lot of similar twisted beliefs enforced on my friends and is still prevalent in my community even to this day, like misogyny, beliefs that women only have certain roles which is very degrading. The line in the video "obey because it's the only way" really hit me because a friend of mine felt like she was just being used by her own parents to do things for them with the goal of attaining finances in ethically quastionable ways and was always told "you should just obey because you are just a daughter and we are the parents" ... How is this stuff so prevalent? I’m so grateful that I was able to make it through my entire childhood without knowing that this sort of thing was even a possibility.

A key component is the country this was based in. As a Filipino I can confirm that the Philippines is one of the few countries besides the US that's very VERY lenient towards cults and people are super gullible. To this day we continue to have cult leaders spring out of nowhere, gather thousands of followers before getting finally caught. They get away with so much before its over, its insane.
A while back, I was at a hot springs with my toddler, baby, and my mom. I was helping my son shower and get dressed so we could go home. An older woman walked into the locker rooms and, seeing my son wrapped in a towel, slapped him on his bare bum. Saying I gave that woman the tongue lashing of her lifetime would be an understatement. I screamed at her when she refused to apologize or acknowledge her wrongdoing, I called her a pedophile, and called the cops on her. I was so angry and flabbergasted that a complete stranger would have the audacity to assault my son in front of me. I can’t imagine being a parent in this situation and not only letting it happen, but actively participating in it too. Makes my stomach churn.
What's more messed up is how a lot of parents were told these things NEEDED to happen in order to show their dedication to the cult 'or else' they'd be kicked out of the cult and have the kids taken away. So a lot of members were made to feel that all this stuff needed to even exists in ordeer to be a good member. The manipulation is horrifying.

Nick, that was some masterful re-editing of their footage for your telling of the story. Ricky showing off his collection of weapons while "Davidito" talked about how God chooses his followers toys was deeply impactful.
I used to go to churches that would use that line in their songs, it honestly really has me rethinking the origins of that phrase. I don't think any of the churches I went to were associated with this cult, but it is a diabolical line to teach to any child, and now I question whether the cult picked it up elsewhere, or if it spawned from the cult and bled through other Christian media like a disturbing game of telephone.
The video keeps getting more and more horrific. Since I have never heard of the cult, I was getting kind of hyped when Ricky planned to take revenge on all of his abusers. The ending text in the last minute of the video are a kind of awful I can’t describe
I have a friend whose grandmother was in this cult. She got out of Flirty Fishing duties by breaking her nose in a fall and thus being deemed too “ugly” to go hook up with men for Christ. 7:20 Fun fact, the phrase "spare the rod, spoil the child" is not in the Bible. That infamous phrase was said by Samuel Butler; the closest the Bible gets is "He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him." (Prov 13:24) And before anyone says "that's the same thing", keep in mind how many analogies the Bible has involving sheep and shepherds. A shepherd never strikes a sheep with a rod, they use the rods to gently herd the sheep. Watch The Ten Commandments with that in mind, and notice how Yvonne De Carlo's character guides the sheep to the well with a soft "drr, drr" sound while gently pushing them. Modern fundamentalists seem to confuse "discipline" with "punishment".
To be fair, there are other Proverbs that use “rod” with beating. Proverbs 26:3 says, “A whip for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, and a rod for the back of fools.” However, I do have a feeling that the “rod of discipline” WAS supposed to reference a shepherd’s rod. In fact, whenever a Christian parent uses “the rod of discipline” to mean actual beating, you can throw Proverbs 22:8 right in their faces: “He who sows injustice will reap disaster, and the rod of his fury will be destroyed.”

That man died believing in the justifications of his desires, and that he was blessed and blessing others. Wild. I'm sure he had a conscience somewhere down there a quiet voice telling him to stop and look at what he was doing, but a speeding train cannot capture the whispering wind around it.
The show is already messed up by the sexism, refusal for proper medical care, and not to question authority. My heart broke when I heard on the of girls cried.
True that. Cults like these are running rampant to this day. God gave you a doctor for a reason he gave ppl freedom and sexuality for a reason. He’s not a magician, he’s just there to watch over us. It’s rare that there ever is divine intervention.

The group operated very similar to one cult existed in Malaysia, al-Arqam. al-Arqam is exactly The Family but for Muslims. In the case of al-Arqam, they marry and got their children married between members to instill the idea of their long awaited 'savior' which ironically their founder, Ashaari Muhammad, that will help the Mahdi. They have their very own compound that only permitted for their members and was strictly (and heavily) guarded to ensure the community abstain from external influences (entertainment, western ideas, etc). Unlike The Family, al-Arqam actually have a proper system to generate their own income. They have groceries, hospital, and even their own factories to produce their own products. al-Arqam have their own entertainment but to be honest the messages in their Islamic songs (we called it 'nasheed') are actually quite good and somehow made its way into the general population to listen. Their creation of 'nasheed' indirectly became the foundation of Malaysia's nasheed landscape industry nowadays and some of nasheed bands created during their reign still make a large portion of today's nasheed industry with the likes Rabbani, Raihan, and Hijjaz. Eventually, extremism have no place in any religion, the Islamic department of the Malaysian government sniffed unusual activities of the group. Their weird practices of over-glorifying their founder and isolating their followers from external Islamic teaching. This really worries a lot of people because it would leads to a forming of an Islamic armed group when the members have no rights to understand the freedom of vast Islamic knowledge and accepting differences of other Islamic sects. Not just that, al-Arqam violated a lot of basic human rights like access to goverment schools, freedom of speech, and children are forcefully taken from their parents. There is no such thing as indifference in this group, they all will have unidirectional mind and ideas to avoid any opposition within the group. Unfortunately, their teaching never went off and the remaining members carry on under different names, one being 'Rufaqa' and the newly announced deviant, 'GISBH'.

Hi, Nate.
Every cult member uses this tactic just to get close to us, but we have to be stronger. We have to know what the signs are.

Okay you noticed that too? "We won't beat the kids anymore. We're good with everybody?" No! You all suck donkey balls lol like wtf.
Are they still in the philippines? How is it they're not had an angry mob going after them?

It is absolutely maddening, because nearly all cult deprogramming resources are currently run by groups most of us would consider cults and the newer cult fashion in the US seems to be cults that base their belief on enemy cults that don't exist, but whose existence is used to justify terrible things. kind of insane that this wasn’t bigger news like on the scale of jonestown. the fact that the horrors of this cult seemed to have been lost to time while other cults are still talked about with fervor seems unfathomable.
Well considering a lot of the cult's activities are kept in secrecy, there's not much to cover other than the witnesses' testimonies
@@armorpro573 i guess i'm not solely talking about news as in the media, but i've never heard this cult discussed among the bigger true crime creators, it's absent from any major speculative true crime documentaries or in any internet "true story" discussions. the fact that a child sex cult that apparently had worldwide impact failed to remain in the public zeitgeist for longer than the first year or two of mass media news coverage is unthinkable to me. maybe this video will regenerate the discussions about it.
In all fairness almost 1000 people were killed in Jonestown.
@@MiguelThinks not to mention the fact your nation's own military was involved in the cult's "boot camps".
That's wild. I hope the police did something!
Yikes, that sucks! I just hope that lady who assaulted your son the way she did got arrested. People who have the audacity to do that to children, whether they are children they know or not, is just disgusting, inexcusable, and unforgivable. I am so sorry you had to deal with that.

7:20 Fun fact, the phrase "spare the rod, spoil the child" is not in the Bible. That infamous phrase was said by Samuel Butler; the closest the Bible gets is "He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him." (Prov 13:24)
And before anyone says "that's the same thing", keep in mind how many analogies the Bible has involving sheep and shepherds.
Yes, standard twisting of scripture. Sad and demonic
Exactly.
Discipline and punishment are two completely different things.
